Writing task Day 1 –modelled /class dictated

Remind the students about the routines for SSR and expect all students to be silently reading during this time. Monitor book/text choices and advise where needed. Remember to model good reading behaviour.Use a variety of games or activities to quickly rehearse the vocabulary, which will be used throughout the lesson, which the students may not be familiar with. Listening and speaking (introduction)Explain that this week the focus is on letters about outdoor recreational activities. Brainstorm together some of the outdoor activities the students like to be involved in. Record these on a large sheet of paper for future reference. Dear Year 4,Are you well? I want to tell you about some activities I do at the weekend. I like to be outside. One of my favourite activities is fishing. I go fishing with my father, uncle and brothers. Sometimes we fish in the river, and sometimes we go out to sea in my uncle’s boat. My uncle’s boat is bigger than my father’s boat. Last weekend we caught a two meter long shark! I was excited. My younger brother was afraid! When we pulled it into the boat, it thrashed its tail back and forth. We all had to hold it still while my father took the hook out of its mouth. It was fun. What do you like to do at the weekend? I would like to hear from you soon. From, HanifComprehension Questions:

1. What is one of Hanif’s favourite things to do?

Page 2: Year 4 Unit 2 Week 5 2014 SOW

2. Who does Hanif go fishing with?3. Why do they go fishing at sea in Hanif’s uncle’s boat?4. How long was the shark?5. Who had to hold the shark?6. What was in the shark’s mouth?

Listening and speaking (response)Revisit some of the activities the students suggested in the first listening and speaking task. Categorise these as different types of activities e.g. water activities, hiking, sports etc. Record these on a chart for future reference. Practise using correct sentence structures either as a partner activity or game, e.g. roll the ball, charades, role play etc. “I like to go hiking at the weekend.” “He/she likes to ….” Encourage use of more complex sentences.Modelled/Class dictated writing :Display the shared text and draw the students’ attention to how the letter is structured e.g.

Greeting Dear.....Introduction Are you well? I want to tell you....Body I like to....Conclusion What do you like to do....Ending From,Signature Hanif

Model writing a letter back to Hanif by selecting activity you like to do at the weekend from the first listening and speaking activity e.g.Dear Hanif,Thank you for your letter. Yes, I am well. In the weekend I Iike to…I hope to see you soon. From,Teacher ….

Writing task Day 2 –group

I hope you are well. I am writing to tell you what I like to do in the school holidays. I like to be outside. One of my favourite things is snorkelling. Do you know what snorkelling is? I went snorkelling with my family when went to Kota Kinabalu. We went by boat to Manukan Island. We spent the day snorkelling in the coral. There were many fish, with lots of beautiful colours. I saw a huge octopus. It was grey and pink. It was in a hole in the coral. I think it was hiding from me! I also saw a stingray. I stayed away from it because I didn’t want it to sting me!What do you like to do in your school holidays? I hope to hear from you soon. From,SyazwiComprehension questions:

1. Why did Syazwi write this letter?2. Who does Syazwi go snorkelling with?3. Where does he go snorkelling?4. What did Syazwi see the last time he went snorkelling?5. What colour was the octopus?6. Why did Syazwi stay away from the stingray?

Listening and Speaking (response)Ask the students to get into groups or put them in groups (3-4 students). Each group chooses a water activity card from a selection provided by the teacher to act out for the rest of the class. This can be either with or without speaking. When a student guesses the activity, he/she must ask the question, “Are you ……?” The group must also answer in a full sentence, “Yes we are …… /No we are not …..” Repeat this a few times to practice the use of first person, present tense.Group WritingDisplay the shared text and remind the students how the letter is structured (see day 1). In groups students select an outdoor activity from the first listening and speaking activity and write a letter back to Syazwi. Remind the groups to answer Syazwi’s questions in the first part of their letter before telling him about their activity.

compound or complex sentence, e.g. “I like to go hiking because I love seeing all the different plants in the jungle.” “I don’t like it when it rains because the track gets slippery.”Dear Year 4,I hope you are well. I want to tell you about the activities I do at the weekend. One of my favourite things is riding on a big banana. That sounds funny doesn’t it? Do you know what I mean?Last weekend my family went to Serasa. There was a scuba diving centre there. They had water sports. We saw people riding on a big banana pulled around behind a speedboat. It looked like so much fun. I asked my mother if I could have a turn. She said I had to wear a life jacket, and my big brother had to go with me. I was so excited. We put on life jackets and climbed onto the banana. There was a handle. I held on tightly because I didn’t want to fall off. My brother sat behind me. The speedboat was so fast. Water splashed over me. The wind was cool on my face. The ride ended quickly. I wanted another turn but my mother said I must wait for next time. What do you like to do at the weekend? I look forward to hearing from you. From,Nabilah

Comprehension Questions:1. Who wrote this letter?2. What does Nabilah like to do?3. Where does Nabilah go to ride the big banana?4. What pulls the banana?5. Why did Nabilah have to wear a lifejacket?6. How did the wind feel on her face?7. When can Nabilah have another turn?

Listening and Speaking (response)Provide the students with a selection of action verbs related to outdoor activities. Play a game or have the students choose a card and use the action in a sentence using first person, present tense. Teachers may need to model this first to ensure students understand the purpose of the activity.Independent Writing Display the shared text and remind students how the letter is structured (see day 1). Students independently write a letter back to Nabilah about another outdoor activity that they enjoy. Display the listening and speaking brainstorm to remind the students of the different activities. Encourage students to answer Nabilah’s questions in the first part of the letter.

In pairs practice telling each other about the activity they have chosen. Key structures are displayed to prompt the students if necessary (see Resource 1). Continue to focus on complex and compound sentences.Dear Year 4,I hope you are well. I want to tell you about the things I like to do in the school holidays. I like to be outside. One of my favourite things is river cruising. My father has a boat. Have you been river cruising? In the last school holidays, I went to Temburong with my father. The tide was low. My father had to look for logs in the water. As we left Kampong Ayer I saw a huge crocodile next to the river. Its mouth was open. I could see all of its sharp teeth! I was afraid but my father said it was just resting. As we went along the river, I saw white birds fishing. I saw a group of monkeys on the mud. My father said they might be looking for crabs. I laughed! Just before Temburong, there was a monitor lizard sitting up in one of the trees. I thought it might not be real. I love seeing the animals when I go river cruising with my father. What do you like to do in your school holidays? I look forward to hearing from you soon. From, LilaComprehension Questions:

1. When does Lila go river cruising?2. Who does she go with?3. Where did she go last school holidays?4. Why did her father have to be careful?5. What did Lila notice about the crocodile? (various answers possible)6. Where was the monitor lizard?7. What does Lila love about river cruising?

Listening and Speaking (response)Play a game to practice responding to Lila’s letter. Sit in a circle. Teacher begins with ‘Dear Lila’. The student sitting to the teacher’s left says ‘Thanks for your letter’ (or similar). Continue student by student saying a sentence to construct the response. Other students listen to ensure the sentences makes sense and to follow the thread of the response so that their contribution is appropriate. Teachers may need to support or prompt less able students. Students may also do this in smaller groups. Others must still be listening to make sure it makes sense.Independent Writing Display the shared text and remind students how the letter is structured (see day 1). Students independently write a letter back to Lila about another outdoor activity that they enjoy. Display the listening and speaking
