Comparative and Superlative Adjectives

Comparative adjectives are used to compare one noun to another noun. We add ‘er to the

end of most words. e.g. His car is bigger than mine.

Superlative adjectives are describing words that have the highest or least quality. They compare

three or more things. We add ‘est’ to the end of most words. e.g. My car is the biggest.

Complete the table by filling in the blanks:

Determiners ‘a’ and ‘an’

Use ‘a’ when the next word starts with a consonant, or before words starting in u and eu when

they sound like you. Use ‘an’ when the next word starts with a vowel (a,e,i,o,u) or with a mute h.

Fill in the blanks with ‘a’ or ‘an’:

Objective: To use and punctuate direct speech.

Direct speech is writing down or reporting the actual words that are being said. For

example; “I'm looking forward to playing football on Saturday,” Ali said.

Enter speech marks into the correct place in each sentence.

1. Don’t do that, shouted the man.

2. Aisha explained, I am going to the mall later.

3. What time are you going to school? asked Mohammed. In about 10 minutes,

replied Abdulla.

4. Leave it over there, said dad. OK, answered his son. Not on top of the table,

under the table, explained dad.

Put the speech marks in the correct places once again. This time, however, you will

also need to add all the other punctuation that is needed as well.

Watch out for commas, question marks or exclamation marks.

Below is a paragraph that needs direct speech. Read the paragraph carefully then

add the speech marks in the correct places.

remember seeing the time in Festival City Mall a few minutes ago.

Festival City! said the man. That’s just what I’m looking for. Can you point

Objective To use fronted adverbials

Fronted adverbials describe an action (verb), they tell you when, how and where.

Underline the fronted adverbial in each sentence

1. Before the sun came up she ate her breakfast.

2. At school the children were busy recycling.

3. Under the bed Noora found her favorite teddy.

4. Anxiously the girls walk up to the front door.

Place the comma in the correct place after the fronted adverbial.

When you change the order of a sentence by using a fronted adverbial, you

place a comma after it.

e.g. There is a very pretty rose in my grandmother’s garden.

In my grandmother’s garden, there is a very pretty rose.

Objective: To use the correct singular and plural nouns (-s, -es, -ies,-ves).

For most nouns you simply add s. For example, ball – balls, cat – cats

For most nouns that end in ch, sh, s, ss, x, z add -es.

fox – foxes, dish – dishes, dress – dresses

For most nouns that end in a consonant, delete the y and add ies.

For most nouns that end in f or fe, delete the fe and add -ves

Objective: Using conjunctions, adverbs and prepositions to express time and cause

Conjunctions are words that join two or more words, phrases or clauses. Conjunctions

are often used to join sentences together.

The most common conjunctions include; and, or, but.

For example: I enjoy swimming, and / but / so I hate getting changed afterwards.

Conjunctions: time and cause

When, after, before, until, since, while, once, as and as soon as are conjunctions

which can be used to connect an action or an event to a point in time.
