First, I would like to send our condolences to the family of John Liemohn. John passed away on May 2, 2006, and the American Water Spaniel Club lost a valuable asset to the club. The Post Na-tionals Big Review will have a tribute to John.

We are happy to announce we have two more AKC Master Hunters among our midst. Congratula-tions to Dave McCracken and Nappy and to Sue Liemohn and Justin!

Also, congratulations to Dave Possin for titling two AKC JH dogs - Vou Kauhea and Joki Koira!

We have 21 dogs to date that have run the AKC hunt tests and have passed a leg (or more). This is just another great way to showcase the abilities of our American Water Spaniels. We have also had 16 dogs to date that have run the RCT and have passed a leg (or more). It looks like we are well on the way to having several AKC titles on our dogs.

August is just around the corner and before you know it our National Specialty will be in full swing. Please make your reservations now, so you can participate in the celebrations.

The artwork for the t-shirts this year is a puppy with a tail feather from a pheasant. The theme is New Beginnings - More to Come. (The pup has only started to achieve, thus the tail feather is all he caught, with the rest of the bird/titles to come with maturity). Order your t-shirts now as only a few will be available at Nationals.

Everyone should have their National booklet by now. There are meals to order, shirts, raffle and auction item donations, hunt tests, roustabouts, etc. Make sure you watch the deadline dates so you don’t miss out on anything. If you did not receive one please contact the Board.

By the time you get the Mini Review, elections should be in full swing. Please be sure to vote as every vote is important.

The AWS Review reserves the right to reasonably edit any ma-terial received. Letters to the Editor will be published that do not criticize any member of the club, his or her dogs or kennel,or on the judging of any dog, but are of general interest to the members. Vice President’s ReportJune 2006

By Jeannie WrightThis will be my last report to you as your Vice President. It has been a privilege to serve as an officer with your current Board of Directors. They are a cohesive and hard working group with a sincere interest in providing strong and thoughtful leadership. Since I joined the board as a direc-tor a few years ago, the work of the Board has changed substantially – both in quantity and in manner of conducting business. Periodic meetings are no longer sufficient for keeping the busi-ness of the Club in motion; therefore, much of our work this year had been conducted by email in between the official meetings. What was once an interesting activity seems to have grown into a second job requiring daily discussion, critical thinking, and decision-making. I hope you will take time to carefully consider your choices, vote, and then support your new officers and direc-tors with patience, willingness to help, and good ideas.

2006 Brown Bag Raffle and AuctionDonation/pledge tickets are in your national premium. Please use these to indicate member or corporate donation. Each year our mailing list must be purged to eliminate unnecessary mailing costs. New corporate donors are added to the list and receive a request letter the next year. If you’ve never attended an AWSC National, the brown bag raffle is a fun activity. We can use all sorts of smaller dog and people items. Larger items go to the Saturday night auction. Again – we always have quite a variety from electronic training collars to hand made items. We need every-one to help with donations and – of course – to participate in both activities. Teresa and I try to make each year’s fund raiser bigger and better than the year before. If you have questions about donations or need a corporate donor letter, email me at [email protected] .

Crossword FunDavid and I have been busy plotting how best to tweak your brain cells. We’ve made up a funcrossword puzzle focusing on hunting terminology, and we are planning prizes for junior (up to 12 years), intermediate (up to 18 years), and senior (over 18 years) winners. Bring your thinking caps and a competitive spirit. Get ready for a challenge!

Disaster and Emergency PlanningPlease see the separate article on this topic.

See you in August. Jeannie

A Message from our Board on Wyoming Supported Entry

It was brought to our attention that there was an unannounced supported entry this year in May. Unfortunately there was a gap in communication between the Board and the new Supported Entry Chairperson. Our new chair took over after the previous chairperson had decided on the Wyoming supported entry, and did not realize that the Board had not been notified of the event.

We sincerely apologize for this error and are taking steps to ensure that this does not occur in the future. Thank you for understanding.

Rescue would also like to recognize a $100 donation from Linda Ford and her kennel for assistance in placing a dog.

CHANGE OF STATISTICIAN

The Board would like to thank Lola Thorsness for her work as Statistician during this last year and a half. Thank you, Lola.

Due to personal circumstances Lola felt she could no longer continue to be Statistician. That position has now been filled by Lucy (Jayne) Kamau. Effective immediately, please send all information to Jayne regarding the following:

All Non- AKC Titles new / old All Certifications: AKC & Non-AKC Canadian CGC International Delta Pet Partners Mexican Therapy Dog etc. etc.

She also compiles and calculates all AKC stats on: Agility Conformation Obedience Rally

It is always helpful to the statistician if you give her a head’s up that you attended a show and had a qualifying score so when she looks through the Awards Booklet she can be sure and not miss it. Just drop her an email at [email protected] giving her the date and show at which you have qualifying scores.

Water Derby(These rules are different from in the past – read carefully)

1. Teams will consist of two dogs.

2. Entry fee will be $5 per team per run.

3. Dogs may run more than once but must be teamed with a different dog each time.

4. Time starts when the first dog is released by the handler. Time stops when the second dog’s front feet cross the line as determined by the judge.

5. All retrieves must be completed to the line.

6. White 2” bumpers will be thrown a distance of 20-30 yards for each retrieve – the distance for the day to be determined by the testing conditions. All throws will be as consistent as humanly possible. There will be two decoys placed several yards apart with the imaginary line between the two indicating the fall area.

7. Each throw will be preceded by a duck call. The judge will signal when the first dog has officially returned. Any time after that signal, the handler of the second dog may signal for the duck call and toss keeping in mind that the clock is running.

8. The starting time will be one hour after the start of the Roustabout. Entries will close two and one half hours from the start of the Water Derby. The event is over when the last dog is run.

9. Judge’s decisions are final.

05.14.06 AWSC Board of Directors Meeting Minutes

I. Call to order and attending: Linda Ford called the meeting to order at 8:08p.m. EST. Present were President Linda Ford, Vice-President Jeannie Wright, Secre-tary Martha Sbarbori, Treasurer Teresa Marley, Directors Shirley Wilkens, David McCracken, Art Heun, and AKC delegate Beth Lagimoniere.

II. Minutes: The minutes of the 03.19.06 board meeting were approved on 04.10.2006 and published on the club website.

III. Secretary’s Report: The record of votes taken since the 03.19.2006 meeting will follow the minutes.New memberships:Robb approved 4.15.2006Hamel approved 05.02.2006Hattrem (Evan) approved 05.02.2006The membership will be notified by letter of the 2006 nominees, as selected by the Nominating committee, tomorrow. The 2006 Membership List will go out in the same envelope.

IV. Treasurer’s Report:Teresa Marley reported the highlights of the Treasurer’s Report as distributed via e-mail attachment to the board members. Check-ing account balance is $12,718.58. $1942.12 from the checking account in the Colorado bank has been transferred, closing out the account. V. Committee Reports:There were no committee reports for this meeting. A format for committee reporting is being developed and will be approved by the board for distribution to committee chairs.

VI. Unfinished Business:

A. 2007 National Specialty: There is not yet an event chair or show chair for 2007. Teresa Marley suggested that there be a perma-nent show chair and that there be a “site coordinator” for the specific location where the specialty is held. She explained that it is very important to have someone who can deal with the AKC and the re-quired paperwork. Linda Ford suggested that there be procedural guidelines to assist the show chair and committee.

B. Website improvements are tabled. The topic will be resumed at a later date.

C. RCT booklets: Clarification of how RCT booklets will be distributed and who will be responsible was discussed. The board concurred that the Hunting Events Committee Chair should be responsible for maintaining the main supply of booklets to cover foresee-able requirements for distribution to RCT sponsoring clubs and judges. The membership chair will maintain a quantity for distribution to new members, and the Hunt Test Equipment chair who maintains the trailer will have a supply. The board will ask the Hunting Events Committee chair to track the booklet requests and depletion for a year for usage history and economical re-ordering. Setting a price for purchasing the booklets was discussed at length. To hold down printing costs, David McCracken suggested informing test-giving clubs that the RCT rules are on the AWSC website. He suggested a syn-opsis of the rules for all test levels be provided for reference at the tests. Finally, David McCracken moved and Shirley Wilkens seconded that the RCT booklets be provided to requestors at no charge. Passed unanimously.

D. Status of AWSC donation to Katrina Companion Animal Relief and a donation to the AKC CHF AWS donor advised fund:Teresa Marley reported that she had held back on taking action until a better picture of potential near term expenses emerged. She will proceed with both donations as soon as the wording to accompany the gift to honor the volunteer is fi-nalized. Discussion of the final wording followed in order to optimize the limited available space.

Page 10 The “Mini” REVIEW July 2006 Issue 3

Minutes, con’t.

E. Yahoo announcement-only group for club announcements: Invitations to the 80 members who furnished e-mail addresses on their membership or renewal forms were issued on 05.13.06. There have already been 14 signups. An announcement will be in the Review, informing anyone who did not furnish an e-mail address, that the Secretary can issue him or her an invitation to join, pending verification of current mem-bership, if they send her a personal e-mail request.

F. Procedure for judges’ nomination: Discussion of the draft procedure for judges’ selection is tabled until next meeting, pending determination of locations for the future national specialties.

G. Procedure for annual meeting preparation, annual committee report format, and ongoing committee report format was discussed with suggestions made for changes. Jean will make the requested changes and redistribute for review and approv-als.

H. E-mail address: The use of AWSC as part of a member’s email address was discussed. Linda Ford contacted the mem-ber and received a reply indicating that the address in questions, among others he has created, is used to filter incoming email correspondence. Martha Sbarbori looked up AWSC on an internet search engine and found many websites using the initials AWSC, and that our club website is not even listed close to the top of the hits. A response to the member will be drafted for board approval before being sent.

I. Public education budget: Teresa Marley has researched expenditures for this category and in years past, only about $30-40 has been spent, with the exception of Pet Expos, which involve paying rent for booth space anywhere from $90 to $350. Beth Lagimoniere said that this year’s “Meet the Breed” volunteers paid for expenses out of their own pocket. Linda concurred and suggested that there should be a budget for this type of activ-ity. Discussion was tabled to the next meeting.

J. AWS window decal: David McCracken has initiated contact with a vendor who has a window decal. There is no minimum or maximum quantity required for ordering. The board concurred that the image represented an AWS. Decal size was agreed on at 4” diameter for the image and the final size would be slightly larger to ac-commodate the lettering.

K. AKC Gazette column guidelines: Changes to the AKC Gazette column guidelines have been proposed and agreed on.

M. Member’s request for details about the RCT approval vote: Martha and Linda will coordinate on a response.

VI. New business:

A. Proposed AWSC Rescue Surrender Program:Holly Trimberger has proposed an owner surrender program for AWSC Rescue. The board has re-viewed the proposal and is in favor of a trial period to test the concept. The conditions of the surrender agreement and information to be provided on the placement forms were discussed. The board would like some minor refinements, space for additional information, and clarification. The board will make revisions and send the form back to Holly for review with the suggested changes in June.

B. “Pets Educating People:”Board members were contacted by this organization and were unanimously in agreement that the

Page 11 The “Mini” REVIEW July 2006 Issue 3

Minutes, con’t.

AWSC would not be involved in this endeavor.

C. AKC Spaniel Hunt Test Subcommittee:This topic was added to the agenda as a last-minute item. It is tabled for e-mail discussion to allow for more time for board review.

D. Next Meeting: To be determined.

VIII. Motion to adjourn: Teresa Marley moved that the meeting be adjourned. Shirley Wilkens seconded.Passed unanimously. Meeting adjourned at 10:34 EST.

Board votes and actions taken since 03.19.06 meeting to 05.14.06 meeting

03.22.06: Board approved the hunt test to be held June 17-18 in Devil’s Lake, ND. Board conditionally ap-proved RCT application by the Missouri Headwaters Gun Dog Club, May 27-28, in Three Forks, MT, pending receipt of judges’ information by April 10.

03.27.06: The board approved the rules for the photo contest at the National Specialty. It was decided by a 4-3 decision that the contest was for members only and non-members could not submit photos. Linda Ford, Martha Sbarbori, and Teresa Marley were in favoring of allowing non-members to submit photos. Jeannie Wright, David McCracken, Art Heun, and Shirley Wilkens felt that only members should be allowed to par-ticipate. 03.27.06: Board approved the procedure for the Auction and Brown Bag Raffle which is held during the an-nual specialty and hunt test weekend.

04.02.06: Linda Ford moved to allocate $100 income from the Purina Pro Partnership Program to the General Education Fund. Art Heun seconded. Passed unanimously.

Avian Flu UpdateJune 2006

By Jeannie Wright

Since emerging in 2003, avian flu has swept across Asia, Europe, and Africa. The virus causing avian flu is carried in the intestines of wild birds worldwide and is easily and rap-idly spread from bird to bird threatening both migratory birds (particularly ducks and geese) and commercial flocks. Three subtypes of the virus spread from birds to humans and typi-cal of viruses these subtypes are continuously adapting and mutating to enhance their ability to infect humans and other animals. Currently there is no vaccine and no cure. As of June 9th 225 human cases have been identified with 128 cases resulting in death. Authorities in the United States are planning for an assumed spread to this country – most likely moving down from Alaska. Worldwide experts are watching this disease carefully and in this country all states are devel-oping plans for reporting and rapid response for containment. Symptoms of avian flu in humans include: fever, cough, sore throat, muscle aches, eye infections, pneumonia, and severe respiratory distress. Risk to humans remains low; however, reported human cases are on the increase. Cases have been reported in Canada and are expected to cross into this coun-try within this year. How can you protect yourself? The CDC (Center for Disease Control in Atlanta) continues to recognize and recommend hand washing as the single most effective way to limit the spread of infection and disease. Use of alcohol based (60% or more alcohol) hand gel remains the preferred method. Any contact with bird saliva or excrement should be followed with hand washing particularly before risking hand contact with mouth, nose or eyes. For additional information check the CDC or WHO (World Health Information) websites or check with your state or county for local plans.

V. President Jane Christiansen called on George Zenk to be the parliamentarian.VI. Reports (summarized – to request a report in its entirety, contact the AWSC Secretary):a. President - Jane Christiansen reporting. Jane graciously thanked her Board for their work over the

past year and the 2004 National Committee members for their work on this year’s event. She an-nounced the sites and hosts for upcoming nationals as follows: 2006 Alexandria, MN, Christiansens; 2007 Marshfield, WI, Pam Kozak; 2008 Aurora, CO, Parkers; 2009 is open and 2010 will be our 25 th an-niversary national and is also open. Jane also announced that there would be another Pet Expo in Min-neapolis in February. She thanked Lara for organizing the photo contest - new this year and appreci-ated by all. Following Jane’s report, Frank Schwantner thanked Jane for all her hard work as President for the past two years.

b. Vice President - Nothing new to report.c. Secretary - Jan thanked the board and the membership for their patience and support while she served

as Secretary. She announced that a tape recorder had been purchased for use at annual meetings. Jan further reported that several bulk mailings and two vote opportunities occurred over the past year. She also commented on the tough issues facing the dog community and the necessity for passion, dedi-cation, and concern for our breed.

d. Treasurer - The full financial report will be published in the next Review. She summarized her report as follows: Total assets as of 7/31/05 were $16,166.44. This does include $5,328.50 for rescue and $865.71 for heart study. Expenses as of 7/05 were $11,771.50. Total income was $11,275.11. Net ordi-nary income was $496.39 and our net income was $461.12.

e. Committee reports1. Breeder Referral - Shirley Wilkens reporting - one additional breeder added to the breeder di-

rectory, 11 information packets mailed. Expenses $39.29.2. Bylaws committee – Chairperson Mike Zarlenga not present. Written report read by the Secre-

tary Jan Heck. Committee members are Jon Hattrem, Paul Morrison, and Jeannie Wright. The goal for the committee is to examine the existing corporate governance documents of the AWSC, Inc. to determine if additional flexibility can be provided for the members and the Board in the governance and operation of the club and eliminate as much ambiguity as possi-ble replacing it with plain English so that all members (within reason) will be able to read and understand the Club’s governing documents. There will be three phases. Phase 1 is limited to 6 issues (types of memberships, time period of the nationals and annual meeting, time pe-riod for dues, review of the term of the AKC delegate, conformity of provisions of the current Constitution and current Bylaws with provisions of the model AKC documents and conformity of terms to provide for universal defined terms through the Constitution and the Bylaws).

Annual Meeting minutes, con’t.

1. ). Phase II is to modify the existing corporate governance documents to eliminate as much ambiguity as possible. Phase III is to review and modify, if advisable, the existing corporate governance documents to provide additional flexibility for the members and the Board in the governance and operation of the club.

2. Gazette Column - Avis Prior reporting. She reported submitting two columns to the Gazette with 1 more in printing. She then respectfully resigned from her position.

3. General Education - Beth Lagimoniere – Public Education had more opportunities to display our breed to the public this year with participation from a variety of members. AKC’s Respon-sible Dog Ownership Day was held at this year’s nationals. AKC Eukanuba Championship to be held in Tampa, FLA in Jan 2006; volunteers invited to Meet the Breeds. Beth requested pictures and articles for Public Ed scrapbook.

4. Delegate Report - Beth Lagimoniere - Represented the AWSC at the AKC Delegates meet-ings in September 2004, March 2005, and June 2005. Gordon Heldebrandt has resigned as AKC Director of Performance Events; William Speck appointed as interim Director. AKC Chief Operating Officer John Lyons announced June 28, 2005 that John Rabidou has been ap-pointed as new Director.

5. Health & Genetics – President Jane Christiansen reporting. Jane reported that a new commit-tee was being formed. She expects the committee to be working by this fall, and she plans to attend the Canine Health Foundation Parent Club Conference in October of 2005. The board has discussed using health surveys to determine the health and genetic issues of most inter-est and concern to the membership.

6. Hunting Events – President Jane Christiansen reporting. Jane reported that this committeewill be created. She will contact the prospective committee members in the near future and will post the information in the next Review.

7. Implementation Committee – Linda Ford reporting. Chairperson Linda Ford listed the other members on the committee: Jane Christiansen, Jack Davies, Art Heun, Beth Lagimoniere, Sharilee Malik, Dave McCracken, Paul Morrison, Butch Norckauer, Paul Olsen, Deb and Frank Parker, Lara Suesens, and Jeannie Wright. The committee’s outreach work will begin with the AKC approval of the RCT. Committee members will contact AKC clubs in their desig-nated areas to familiarize them with AWS and the retriever requirements. The general map has been completed and committee members are assigned to areas.

8. Judges Education – Linda Hattrem reporting. Linda reported that the committee reviewed the AKC ramping policy for inclusion of AWS and decided not to make a change for our breed. Judges may request a ramp for any breed based on their own personal needs. The commit-tee reviewed the AWS entry in the AKC The Complete Dog Book and decided to not change the AWS entry at this time. Additionally the committee supplied a short descriptive paragraph for a publisher of an all breed dog book. Judge mentoring activities are on-going. Jean Wright is working on an educational power point presentation to use for breed seminars. Linda requested pictures be sent to Jean for this project.

9. Library and OFA – Linda Ford listed the other Library committee members as Mary Barth, Dr. Bedard, Roger Borland, and Patty St. Onge. The committee’s goal is to develop and maintain materials providing historical and descriptive information about our breed. This is an on-going activity with materials continuously being added to the library. Members were reminded to alert the committee when they see articles of interest. The library is in need of AWS pictures at 300 dpi - pictures of dogs in natural poses and activities that could be used in books and magazine articles.

10. Membership - Patty St. Onge reporting. Patty reported that as of 8/11/05 the club has 222 members (199 full members and 23 associate members. Last year the attrition rate increased from approximately 10% to 40%. One factor may be the increased dues. The board did not extend the membership deadline (March 30th) and denied the request to send renewal notices to the 48 delinquent members. Patty expressed her concerns that all members are treated fairly and that communication from the board regarding dues and membership be improved. A question arose about the dues grace period and extensions. The President referred the membership to the club Constitution and By-laws, Section 4b.

11. Mentoring - Jane Christiansen reporting. Jane explained that most mentoring activities over the year had been handled by Linda Ford. New members are contacted, welcomed, and given an opportunity to ask questions about club membership.

Page 15 The “Mini” REVIEW July 2006 Issue 3

Annual meeting minutes, con’t12. Nationals - Jane Christiansen restated that the 2006 Nationals will be in Alexandria MN and

Hoffman, MN for the hunt tests. The date will be basically the same week as this year’s na-tional. There was a discussion about the AKC calendar used for scheduling AKC events. The date for our Nationals will start on August 9, 2006.

13. Policies and Procedures - Tina Borg reporting. Tina reported that the goal of the committee is to set forth the club’s policies as they exist from the inception of the club. To date all existing minutes have been reviewed and the rules from minutes have been organized on an Excel spreadsheet. Eventually this information will be entered into a Word document and sent to the membership. An example item is the function of the club’s standing committees.

14. Rescue - Holly Trimberger reporting. Holly thanked Elizabeth Pannill for starting the Rescue program and her many years of work as Rescue Committee chair. She reported that the club is selling tote bags and pillows with a picture of Elizabeth’s AWS, Bosco that benefits Rescue. Holly thanked her committee members and all the other people who help the committee by donating monetary gifts as well as monitoring PetFinder, identifying, transporting, and foster-ing dogs. This year the committee participated in fundraisers and helped develop a website page for owners needing to re-home their AWS. Holly also thanked the membership for their support and reminded them that Rescue monies can quickly disappear with one dog in need of extensive medical or surgical care.

15. Review – George Zenk reporting. George Zenk thanked Susan Rylance, Charles Starner, and Jane Noll West for all their hard work over the past year in helping to get the issues of the Review put together and disseminated. He also thanked the board for their support and direc-tion, and thanked all the individual members who contributed articles, information, and labels in a timely manner. George additionally thanked the members who took time to point out er-rors in an effort to continuously improve our publication. He reported that he is in the process of developing a written philosophy and objectives that will serve as a guide to the ultimate content of the Review. George encouraged member feedback for improving the Review, as we all want the Review to be important and of value to the membership.

16. Statistician (AKC events and all non-AKC titles) - Lola Thorsness’ report was read by Secre-tary Jan Heck. Lola compiles and calculates all AKC stats for Agility, Conformation, Obedi-ence and Rally. She compiles and calculates all non-AKC titles both new and old, such as Canadian and International Mexican titles. She also compiles all certification, both AKC and Non-AKC, such as CGC, and Therapy Dog certifications. This involves searching a number of sources including a large AKC publication. Lola requested that members send her notice of their competition events to ensure accuracy in recording.

17. Statistician (AWSC Hunt Tests and AKC Hunt Test Titles) - Patty St. Onge reporting. Patty offered assistance with AWSC Hunt Test paperwork for those that have received approval for the test and reviewed her role in sending out premium lists, making up catalogs, sports sheets, labels, and certification sheets. She reviewed the costs of national vs. local tests and also how she compiles statistics and provides them when requested. Her goal will continue to be to maintain records of all AWS qualifying and earning titles in hunt related tests, including AWSC, NAHRA, and AKC.

18. Supported Entries - Deb Parker reporting. Debra reported on 2 supported entries, Memorial Day in Laramie, Wyoming, and 4th of July weekend in Redmond, Oregon. Deb encouraged members to contact her about planning supported entries.

19. Website - Sue Liemohn reporting. Sue named the other members of the Website Committee as Ronda Rossi and Jeannie Wright. Sue reported that the website is a low cost method of communicating with the public and club membership. People looking for breeders can com-municate with the Breeder Referral person from the website. The Members Only section of the website became operational in November of 2004. An Owner Referral page was devel-oped by Rescue and can be used by owners desiring to re-home a dog. Updates were done a s n e e d e d a n d w h e n i n f o r m a t i o n w a s r e c e i v e d . T h e U R L h t t p : / / w w w .americanwaterspanielclub.org was obtained and is the website’s new address. Sue ex-pressed her concern with possibly disenfranchising those members without internet access and suggested that important updates posted to the website should be mailed to those without access to the Internet to ensure that all members are treated equally. She has had regular updates done to the site, some on short notice. Sue requested that information be completed before sending to her for website revision. She also requested volunteers for gathering infor-mation and/or writing pages on AWS as the Wisconsin state Dog, a FAQ section, hunting

Annual meeting minutes, con’t.20. stories, historical documents, health care information and AWS involved in other activities of

interest, including action photos. Currently pictures of dogs with the ROM and Vaughn Brockman Award are being collected for inclusion on the website. In the discussion, Linda Ford asked Sue if there could be a report on the number of hits on the website. Sue can get detailed reports from the web designer.

II. Discussion of Committee Reports:a. Jon Hattrem asked for a report on the RCT. President Jane reported that RCT was at a standstill awai t-

ing AKC approval, which should go under consideration in October 2005. Deb Parker, as RCT Commit-tee Chairperson, reported that the pamphlet had been completed in June 2005, approved by the board, and sent to AKC. Pam Boyer quoted from the RCT draft that no club or individual can run these certifi-cation tests and obtain a passing score toward their Junior, Senior, or Master title until AKC has ap-proved them and she inquired about the status of running the RCT at nationals. Beth Lagimoniere, AKC delegate, spoke to this issue. As requested by the board, she had posed this question to AKC. She was directed by Bill Speck that during this Nationals, if the event was hosted by the parent club, and the RCT was approved as read, that through our record keeper we could submit that as a pass at a later date. Sue Liemohn asked if any of the Spaniel Clubs could run the RCT this fall. Beth reiterated that would not happen. Sue asked if the RCT were handled in a more timely fashion would it have allowed Spaniel clubs to host the RCT. Beth explained that there were circumstances beyond the AWSC board’s control such as Gordon Hildebrandt’s resignation. The documents have been sent to Bill Speck, reviewed, and the issue will be presented for the AKC October meeting agenda. John Rabidou will meet with Beth in September and she will receive an update.

b. Jack Davies asked who wrote the RCT rules. Deb Parker listed the other committee members as Linda Ford, Paul Morrison, Brian O’Dell, and Shirley Wilkens,

c. Mary Kangas said she thought the club got some misinformation by Gordon Hildebrandt (AKC Director of Performance Events). Beth stated that she believed Gordon gave information as he believed accu-rate at the time. Mary Kangas made the motion: “Be it resolved that the issues of AKC classification with RCT be revisited in its entirety by a revote on the issue of classification of AKC Spaniel. Parlimen-tarian George Zenk deemed the motion inappropriate because the meeting was addressing committee reports.

d. Jon Hattrem quoted the 2004 Annual Meeting minutes: “the elected Board and the VGEC will determine what the additional certification will be” and asked why this wasn’t followed. George Zenk stated that the statement had been previously corrected within official correction of the minutes.

e. Jon Hattrem asked if the elements of certification at the highest level were submitted. President Jane Christiansen answered that yes, the elements of certification were submitted. Beth Lagimoniere, AKC delegate, discussed the process that resulted in AKC approval of AWS classification with water retriev-ing certification. There was also discussion of parent club working certificates such as the English Springer Spaniel Club that is developing a test called “beyond master” that has quite a degree of diffi-culty of testing elements but is a parent club test and not something that was contingent on receiving an AKC spaniel title.

f. Sue Liemohn asked why she, as a member of VGEC, did not have information on the change of dis-tances and asked how they were changed without VGEC approval? Deb Parker stated that the dis-tances agreed upon were within VGEC guidelines. The board paid very close attention to the fact that the VGEC said it could not exceed what everyone approved. The AWSC board shortened the water dis-tances after talking to numerous people and made what they thought was the best decision.

g. David Possin asked if the original document was presented to the Hunt Test committee and requested to see the cover sheet. No cover sheet exists. Gordon Heldebrant received the entire VGEC packet at the 2004 AWSC Nationals. Sue Liemohn stated that she believed that we compromised and moved our dogs towards mediocrity by not demanding more of our dogs. Sue proposed that to encourage more people we should have cheaper entry fees. Discussion ensued regarding working on our own AWSC tests and encouraging members to run them.

h. Jon Hattrem stated that nowhere does the Board state that they officially presented the proposal to the AKC. Beth Lagimoniere reiterated that the “best case scenario” was presented to Gordon Heldebrandt. There was no formal reply written because the information was relayed through telephone conversa-tions. President Jane Christiansen stated that the Board voted to submit the classification that was sub-mitted. The actual document was given to Gordon Hildenbrandt in its original form as voted on by the AWSC members. Sue Liemohn said there was no tally of the Board votes for classification and ele-ments, since it was published as unanimous. All agreed it was not written in the minutes. Sue wanted to know why there was no written record? Secretary Jan Heck said the Board did a roll call vote by

Page 17 The “Mini” REVIEW July 2006 Issue 3

Annual meeting minutes, con’t telephone and it was her error that it was not typed into the minutes.

II. Old Businessa. Mary Kangas - Made a motion that it be resolved that the issue of AKC spaniel classification be revisited in its entirety by a re-vote on the issue of classification as AKC Spaniel. George Zenk, parliamen- tarian, states it is inappropriate to make a motion on an issue that is currently under consideration by a committee process. Motion tabled.b. Gail Kasper - Asked that we address Sue’s previous question as to whether the entire Board voted on

the issue of classification and elements that was published. Each Board member was asked if they had cast their votes on this. All Board members said yes, they had voted on the issue. Butch Norckauer suggested the minutes needed to be amended to show a written record of the vote. Mary Kangas asked to have a tape recorder used at every meeting.

c. Kevin Smith - Wanted to understand why RRO did not allow Mary Kangas’ motion to re-vote on classifi-cation. George stated a motion that interferes with prior actions of the board that are already in process are considered conflicting and consequently deemed out of order. Kevin Smith reminded the members and board that the first article of the proposal is that the vote was on classification with a certification. And at the end of that certification vote it had a little stipulation that it would not be valid until the terms of that vote were completed. Beth Lagimoniere, AKC Delegate, stated the AKC has approved classifica-tion as a Spaniel with retriever certification and the elements of that test as submitted by the AWSC.

d. Mary Kangas stated that she did want to review the entire process. That would include the RCT that has not been approved by AKC. The AKC approved that the AWSC could have a Retriever Certification Test. AKC has not approved the rules and regulations of the RCT. Kevin stated that obviously the board knows his position on the vote for classification that the terms were not fulfilled when the board entered into an agreement for classification with the AKC. At that point, as a board of directors, you risked members in here actually suing the club for inappropriate behavior. His point is that the board ac-tions and what the board did risked splitting this club apart and is that appropriate when that particular action was never fulfilled. But now when there is another proposal that is put forth, you say that it wasn’t done but at the same time that that you have a vote that is printed in black and white that in order for it to be a valid vote it had to be completed. Kevin Smith quoted last year’s minutes “Kevin Smith reminded the members and board that the first article of the proposal is that the vote was on classification with a certification.” And at the end of that certification vote it had a little stipulation that it would not be valid un-til the terms of that vote were completed. You do not have a valid certification vote because the AKC hasn’t voted on it. President Jane reiterated that AKC hasn’t approved the Rules and Regulations of the RCT. Beth, AKC Delegate, stated the AKC has approved classification as a Spaniel with retriever certifi-cation test and the elements of that test as submitted by the AWSC. It is complete. George Zenk, par-liamentarian, stated that another Robert rules of Order that applies is that you cannot rescind a motion with a simple majority vote that has been approved by a two-thirds majority previously. President Jane Christiansen called an end to the discussion to move forward with the agenda.

III. New Businessa. Linda Hattrem – Inquired about all Board members reviewing and approving the Board Review. Presi-

dent Jane Christiansen answered “yes”. Linda disapproved of the Board Review, stating she felt it was inappropriate as she felt it was saying that if that if members didn’t put a title on their dog, their opinion did not count. She requested the minutes reflect her opinion.

b. Kevin Smith submitted the following motion. “On approval of the RCT rules by the AKC, I hereby pro-pose that in addition the HRC, NAHRA and AWSC working certificates that meet or exceed the ele-ments of distance along with number of retrieves and flushes be recognized as qualified passed by the AWSC. Passes of the above mentioned organizations and tests would be considered meeting the re-quirements of the RCT.” Jon Hattrem seconded. Discussion: Kevin Smith said it takes a simple majority to pass. Mark Wilkens questioned AKC Dele-gate Beth Lagimoniere if AKC would have to approve Kevin’s motion. Beth said she would have to check with AKC, however, the stipulation the AKC adds is that it must be an AKC judge. Sue Liemohn stated that she thought the use of AKC judges was a recommendation and the justification that the board came up with for that as a requirement was that AKC required that and we are an AKC club and we should use AKC judges. Sue did not see that as a dictate from AKC. Kevin withdrew the old motion in order to restate in three different motions. Jon Hattrem who seconded the first motion, approved the withdrawal of the motion.

c. Kevin Smith submitted a new motion. Upon approval of the RCT rules by the AKC, he proposed that, in addition, AWSC working certificates that meet or exceed the elements of distance along with the number of retrieves and flushes be recognized as qualifying passes by the AWSC. Passes of the above

Page 18 The “Mini” REVIEW July 2006 Issue 3

Annual meeting minutes, con’t. mentioned organization and tests would be considered meeting the requirements of the RCT. John Hat-

trem seconded.Discussion: Butch Norckauer believed Kevin’s new motion would allow only AWSC hunt tests to be used as a pass for the RCT. Rationale probably would be that the AKC judges would be in place for those events. The question was called by President Jane Christiansen. Jane asked if everyone under-stands that AKC judges would have to be used. Motion carried.

d. Kevin Smith submitted another motion. Upon approval of the RCT rules by the AKC, he hereby pro-posed that, in addition, HRC tests that meet or exceed the elements of distance along with the number of retrieves and flushes be recognized as qualifying passes by the AWSC. Passes of the above men-tioned organizations and tests would be considered meeting the requirements of the RCT. Jon Hattrem seconded.Discussion: Kevin stated that obviously we have an issue with the AKC requirement that there are AKC judges present and this motion will require that AWSC approach the AKC with that option and if the AKC says no then the motion doesn’t pass. Jack Davies stated that AWSC is an AKC parent club. The mo-tion is asking the AKC to accept UKC or NAHRA certificates. He stated that AKC will not do that, giving the example that it would be like asking a Ford dealership to fix a Chevrolet under Chevrolet warranty. John Liemohn spoke in favor of the motion. Kevin inquired about the AWSC removing the stipulation of using AKC judges. President Jane Christiansen reiterated that we are the AKC Parent Club and we are asking for AKC titles. David Possin stated that the board is presupposing the AKC will not accept HRC or UKC tests for the RCT. He would like to see that in writing. Tina Borg questioned the logic behind approaching AKC about HRC or UKC tests. Patty St. Onge, who has worked closely with the AKC on this year’s National, stated that when you do an AKC show event, you are not allowed to put any other title of record other than an AKC title of record. You cannot include club titles, NAHRA, or HRC. Jack Davies commented that it is true that there are dual judges (AKC and other organizations), but at an HRC event the judge is acting on behalf of HRC when he gives a passing score. He agreed with Kevin’s motion that we will ask AKC if they would accept the results of HRC, etc. and if they don’t, so be it. Jack called the question. Counted a tie vote. Motion defeated. Motion repeated by Kevin Smith. Upon ap-proval of the RCT rules by the AKC, Kevin Smith hereby proposed that in addition HRC tests that meet or exceed the elements of distance along with the number of retrieves and flushes be recognized as qualifying passes by the HRC. Passes of the above mentioned organization and tests would be consid-ered meeting the requirements of the RCT if exemption of AKC judges are approved by the AKC. Dave Possin seconded. Motion defeated. (20 yea and 23 no)

e. Sue Liemohn moved that the AWSC Board immediately address the proposal to allow the AWSC hunt test to count as the retriever certification test written by Sue and John Liemohn and appoint a committee of five highly experienced hunt test handlers - members of AWSC, Spaniel and Retriever. This is to ad-dress the issue of reconciling our AWSC hunt tests with the RCT. Paul Morrison seconded.Discussion: Linda Ford explained that the RCT has to be approved first to be sure that what was changed in the AWSC hunt tests would work in the future. Sue suggested that we start immediately as it appears that AKC is likely to approve the RCT. Sue reminded the board that part of this motion would include experienced hunt test handlers: AWSC, Spaniel, and Retriever. George Zen asked Sue to de-fine “experienced” and also who would determine the make-up of the committee. Sue replied that there was no question that the board always determines the make-up of the committee. Sue stated that highly experienced could be interpreted many ways since we currently do not have any members who have run the AKC spaniel test. George stated that no matter who the board chooses to be on this committee, someone would be unhappy with the selection. Paul Morrison asked if experience might include Spaniel judges because they do have spaniel test experience. Sue was willing to accept an amendment to the motion to define the experience and composition of the members of the committee. Sue asked the membership to move forward and use the document prepared by Sue and John Liemohn as a guide. Sue stated that the club would be able to keep their AWSC hunt tests with some adjustments made. Linda asked for a clarification from Sue on whether she was asking to adopt the current proposal or was she asking for a committee to look at that and maybe change the proposal? Sue repeated that she is making a proposal that the board immediately address the reconciliation of the RCT and the AWSC test. Linda Ford restated that the board would look at the current AWSC hunt test, the RCT, and the docu-ment prepared by the Liemohns. Sue felt that if the membership wants the AWSC hunt test to continue then there has to be a way to change the AWSC hunt test to meet or exceed the RCT requirements.Kevin Smith made a friendly amendment to define “experience” in Sue Liemohn’s motion. Kevin moved that experience would mean that someone has titled a dog at one of the two highest levels of whatever venue they have been tested in. If it were AWSC tests, it would be WDX or superior. If the tests were HRC, the titles would be seasoned and finished. If the tests were NAHRA, it would be intermediate and

Page 19 The “Mini” REVIEW July 2006 Issue 3

Annual meeting minutes, con’t.and senior. Paul Morrison, who seconded Sue’s motion, did not accept the amendment as read. PaulMorrison would recommend that Kevin include Spaniel judges in the amendment. Kevin repeated the amendment with the inclusion of spaniel judges. Kevin moved that experience would mean that some-one has titled a dog at any of the two highest levels of any of the test HRC, UKC, NAHRA or Spaniel and to include qualified judges at those levels. The question had been called. Amendment passed. Sue Liemohn repeated her motion. She moved that the AWSC Board immediately (within the next two board meetings) address the proposal to allow the AWSC hunt test to count as the Retriever Certifica-tion Test using the guidelines written by Sue and John Liemohn and appoint a committee of five highly experienced hunt test handling members of AWSC, Spaniel and Retriever. Experienced would mean that someone has titled a dog at any of the two highest levels of any of the tests (AKC, HRC, UKC, NAHRA) and to include qualified judges at those levels. Motion with the amendment carried.

f. Dave McCracken submitted a motion in writing. “In order to participate in, and thus receive a title in an AWSC hunt test, the owner of the dog running must be a member of AWSC.” Frank Schwantner sec-onded. David then amended his motion to say: “In order to receive a title at AWSC hunt tests the owner of the AWS must be a member”. Discussion: Members expressed concern that this motion may discourage people from running the tests. The intent of the motion was to encourage people to join the club. The motion was amended to read: “In order to receive a title at AWSC hunt test, the owner of the AWS must be a member or make application for membership within 60 days.Discussion: Kevin Smith was not sure if this motion did not violate the club’s not-for-profit aspect of how we include or not include people in our activities. David reminded the members that the titles were a club awarded title. Butch Norckauer stated that he respectfully agreed with the content of the motion but would vote against it because first, is it really a problem within the club (David stated that it has been in the recent past) and secondly, this is one of the motions that could be lost in the bowels of the organiza-tion. Patty St. Onge reminded everyone that it is the dog that earns the titles. David questioned what would prevent all of us saving the membership fee and run the tests? Mark Wilkens concurred with Patty that the titles are about the dogs. Teresa Marley called the question. Motion failed. (18 yea; 22 no)

g. Patty St. Onge made a motion that the minutes of the annual meeting for the previous year be published in the July Review prior to the next annual meeting or send out a copy of the minutes prior to the annual meeting. Mark Wilkens seconded. Motion carried.

h. Mark Wilkens asked a question of Sue Liemohn regarding whether the web master could make the web-site more user friendly. He suggested a web map. Sue stated she would definitely talk with the web master.

i. Secretary Jan Heck explained that it was difficult to contact all members who have email due to spam protection and other blocking. There was a suggestion to post a note in the Review to remind members to check the settings on their email and to notify the club when they change e-mail addresses.

j. President Jane Christiansen read the results of the election ballots:Secretary: Sue Liemohn – 72 Martha Sbarbori – 81Director: David McCracken – 77 Jeannie Wright – 76President: Jane Christiansen ran unopposed.

k. Mary Kangas moved that the meeting be adjourned at 11:45 p.m. George Christiansen seconded. All in favor. Meeting adjourned.

Respectfully submitted,

Janice K. Heck

The Board is looking for three inspectors of election who will be at the meeting to count the ballots. These inspectors cannot be on the current Board nor candidates on the ballot. Please contact the Board if you are

interested in helping with counting the ballots.

RESCUE FOLK ARE SHAMELESSby Gail M. Kasper for AWS Rescue

There are many qualities that Rescue folk seem to possess. A Rescue person seems to be able to hear or read between the lines. When a shelter worker tells us a dog has un-channeled energy, we just know that this dog is going to need a lot of obedience training. Likewise if an owner surrender tells us their un-neutered 4 yr old male likes to ‘have his way,” we know in-stinctively that we are getting a dog with domi-nance issues. Rescue folk must also have a 6th

sense about matching a dog to a foster family or a forever home. Matching canine & human personalities for a perfect fit is a real talent.

But one quality Rescue folks all seem to possess and utilize is shamelessness. But this is a good thing. Let me explain. To do things in the name of ‘RESCUE’ is our unspoken call to arms. A friend who is involved in Golden Re-triever rescue here in Chicago (As Good As Gold) mentioned that her group went to town festivals and did a booth with the old duck pond game and a wheel of fortune game to raise money. I questioned her in great detail about prizes, costs, and profits. Within weeks, and a promise to A.G.A.G. not to do the duck pond game in the Chicago area, Holly & I had developed our own pond game. An idea shame-lessly stolen/borrowed & customized to fit our breed. You should hear us call out to the crowds. “HELP AN AWS RETRIEVE A DUCK!” “EVERY DUCK A WINNER!” “A PRIZE EVERY TIME!”

At one of our rescue fairs, I saw a Bas-sett Hound strutting around the fair wearing a saddle jacket with a clear vinyl pocket on each side. In the pockets were dollar bills and the words, ‘RESCUE DONATIONS’ stitched on the jacket. I watched as children and adults scrambled to put dollar bills in the Bassett’s jacket pocket. A casual mention to a friend at Greyhound Chicago Rescue & now at every meet & greet at the local PetsMart or Petco, at least one greyhound has a plastic pocket jacket with folks lining up to put money in those pockets. (*NOTE- watch for our own rescue AWS with a pocket jacket this year at Nation-als.)

Have you noticed at the Nationals when I’m behind the t-shirt and goodie tables how I push-er - mention various rescue items for sale? I smile & say sweetly, “it’s for res-cue.” Just shameless!

But even I was amazed at how far

Rescue Folk, con’t.

But even I was amazed at how far dedicated rescue folks will go. This definitive shameless incident happened at Holly & Jack’s wedding just this past May. One tradition at most wed-dings is the tapping of table glasses with silver-ware to get the newly married couple to kiss. A cute custom when you’re the guest tapping your glass, a bother when you’re the newly married couple trying to eat. But I digress.

After a few tappings & kisses, the Maid of Honor went up to the DJ’s table & grabbed the microphone. In a loud but very sweet voice, Theresa stated that AWS Rescue was very near & dear to the wedding couple’s heart. And to raise $$ for the AWS Rescue fund it would cost $1.00 to see the bride & groom kiss! The whole room laughed and clapped. Sure enough, folks went up to the head table and gave the Maid of Honor dollar bills just to watch Holly & Jack kiss. It even got to the point where tables of guests were pooling their money to watch the couple do long and juicy kisses. (*Note-Our table got to watch a great kiss for our pooled $25.00)

The most recent display of shameless-ness in the name of Rescue occurred just this past weekend. A group of us were at a friend’s home looking at some lovely baked glass neck-laces she had made. They were to be sold at the upcoming Greyhound Chicago annual gather-ing. As we were placing our orders for neck-laces to sell at our own rescue functions, Nancy from A.G.A.G. asked at what price was Grey-hound rescue were selling them. Pat answered, “$15.00.” Nancy smiles and said, “Then we’ll sell them for $20.00. Because everyone knows Golden Retriever Rescue folk are truly shame-less!”

So, when you see the breed rescue folk out there shamelessly hustling for donations, keep in mind that we really can’t help our-selves. Remember, ‘It’s for Rescue.’

Keeping kids and dogs safe! Submitted by Teresa Marley

Doggone Safe offers the following tips for parents and dog owners to help kids safe:

The 3 MOST Important Things to Teach Your Kids

1. Dogs Don’t Like Hugs and Kisses – Teach your kids not to hug or kiss a dog on the face. Hugging the family dog or face-to-face contact are common causes of bites to the face. In-stead, teach kids to scratch the dog on the chest or the side of the neck.

2. Be a Tree if a Strange Dog Approaches – Teach kids to stand still, like a tree. Trees are boring and the dog will eventu-ally go away. This works for strange dogs and anytime the family dog gets too frisky or becomes aggressive.

3. Never Tease a Dog – and never disturb a dog that ‘s sleeping, eating or protecting something.

The 2 MOST Important Things Dog Parents Can Do

1. Supervise - Don’t assume you dog is good with kids. If a tod-dler must interact with you dog, you should have your hands on the dog too. Even if your dog is great with kids and has never b i t t en – W H Y T A K E A CHANCE?

2. Train the dog - Take your dog to obedience classes where positive-reinforcement is used. Never pin, shake, choke, hold the dog down or roll the dog over to teach it a lesson. Dogs treated this way are likely to turn their aggression on weaker family members. Involve older children in training the family dog while supervising. Don’t allow children to punish the dog. Condition the dog to en-joy the presence and actions of children using positive experi-ences.

The 3 MOST Important Things Dog Owners can do

1. Spay or Neuter Your Dog –Neutered pets are calmer, healthier and less likely to be aggressive. Neutering prevents unwanted dogs that may end up in shelters or in less than ideal conditions where they may grow up to be poorly socialized or aggressive.

2. Condition Your Dog for the World – Give your puppy lots of new positive experiences. Train using positive methods i.e. Clicker Training.

3. Supervise Your Dog - Super-vise your dog at a l l t imes around children. Do not allow children to hug and kiss the dog. If visiting children are bothering dog, put the dog away or send the chi ldren home.

My dog’s name is Xwhyzee CD. What does that mean? submitted by Jan Heck

Have you ever wondered about the significance of the letters that appear before and after the name of some of the dogs on your puppy’s pedigree? These letters represent the titles that a particular dog and handler have accomplished by passing tests during per-formance events. There are many venues for performance: American Kennel Club, United Kennel Club, and International Kennel Club are just a few of the organizations that support dog sports. Each venue offers a variety of activities like agility, hunt tests, hunt trials, obedience, rally, and tracking. There are also Search and Rescue Organizations and Schutzhund Organizations that host spe-cific events for service type work.

This article will focus on the American Kennel Club Obedience competitions. The titles that are earned at AKC Obedience Trials are usually listed at the end of the dog’s name. The highest titles in obedience (OTCH and NOC) are permenantly placed in front of the dog’s name.

Obedience tests were started by Helen Whitehouse Walker. Mrs. Walker wanted to demonstrate the intelligence of her poodles. She developed a simple test and demonstrated the working poodles in Mt. Kisco, New York in 1933. The American Kennel Club devel-oped their first tests and held the first actual obedience trial in 1936 with approximately 200 entries in 18 trials.

Today, AKC offers three distinct levels of competition: Novice, Open and Utility. Each level requires the handler and dog team prove they have mastered a specific skill set before advancing to the next level. The handler and dog are scored on their performance individually and also in group exercises. The handler and dog must pass all the exercises in the test and earn a score over 170 points out of a possible 200 under three different judges at three tests. Each time the dog and handler team pass a test, the dog earns a leg. Three legs and the dog earns the title. Each of the three classes are divided into an A class and a B class. The A classes are for be-ginner or novice handlers who are seeking their first title with a dog. The B class is for experienced handlers who have already titled one dog but wish to continue to title other dogs they own. Handler and dog teams can earn first, second, third and fourth place rib-bons by earning the most points.

The first level is called Novice Class. A dog that passes the required number of tests (3) will be awarded the title Companion Dog and the letters CD will permanently be placed after the dog’s name. Novice Class exercises demonstrate that the handler is able to heel the dog on a loose leash and also off leash with a minimum number of commands or cues, call the dog to come directly to the handler, and leave the dog in a stand for a simple physical exam or pet by a stranger. Novice dogs are also tested as a group (10 – 12 dogs in the group) for a one-minute sit stay and a three-minute down stay with the handlers standing 20 feet away from the line of dogs.

The second level of obedience is called Open Class. Once again, the dog must pass three tests (or earn 3 legs) with a score between 170 and 200 to earn the title Companion Dog Excellent or CDX. The handler dog team must be able to complete a heeling pattern off leash, finish retrieving exercises and jumping exercises (both a high jump and broad jump). The group sit stay will be 3-minutes and the down stay will be 5-minutes and the handler will leave the ring and stay out of sight.

The third level of obedience is called Utility Dog. A dog and handler that completes the requisite 3 legs with a score between 170 and 200 will earn the title Utility Dog and have a UD placed at the end of the dog’s name. The dog and handler will need to be able to communicate with the use of silent hand signals, complete a go out or send away, complete directed jumping exercises, stand steady for a more thorough exam and finish a scent discrimination exercise.

Obedience work does not end with the completion of a utility title. The handler may choose to continue showing in both Open B andUtility B. If the dog/handler team earns 10 passing scores in both Open B and Utility B at the same show, the dog will earn the title of Utility Dog Excellent or UDE.

The PhD of obedience competitions is called an OTCH or Obedience Trial CHampion. The dog/handler team must compete and earn 100 points by winning first, second, third or fourth place ribbons. The team must also have earned three first place ribbons in Utility B and/or Open B.

Top OTCH dogs in each breed are welcome to compete in the AKC National Obedience invitational each year. Only dogs winning the AKC National Obedience Championship are permitted to have the prestigious NOC letters precede its name in AKC records. The AKC National Obedience Championship has been held for the last eight years. There are only 7 dogs with the NOC letters pre-ceding its name (one dog won the title two years).

Every NOC dog started its obedience career by earning a Companion Dog title. Dream big, set goals and enjoy the obedience train-ing journey.

Agility Point Rating System By Lola Thorsness

*** This point system is done in separate categories for all five-height divisions. ***

Rating Points By Classes

1) Standard Runs

-Novice A&B (NA)-Open (OA) No A or B categories, both are combined into one.-Excellent A&B (AX)

2) Jumps with Weaves (JWW)

-Novice A&B (NAJ)-Open (OAJ) No A&B categories, both are combined into one.-Excellent A&B (AXJ)

Preferred Class Rating Point System

Started in 2002. Classifies all dogs to be able to jump 4 inches lower than regular inch categories for their height and add an extra 5 seconds to the Standard Course Time, (SCT).This is scored exactly like The Rating Points By Classes System.

1) Standard Runs

-Novice (NA) No A&B categories, both are combined into one.-Open (OA) No A&B categories, both are combined into one.-Excellent A&B (AX)

2) Jumps with Weaves (JWW)

-Novice (NAJ) No A&B categories, both are combined into one.-Open (OAJ) No A&B categories, both are combined onto one.-Excellent A&B (AXJ)

How Points are Calculated

Agility points are calculated by taking the total number of dogs in a class and subtracting points from the following table.

0 Points Deducted For 1st place1 Point Deducted For 2nd place2 Points Deducted For 3rd place3 Points Deducted For 4th placeAnd so on down the line until all qualifying dogs have been scored / ranked in each class.

Example:First place winners in each class, receive one point for each dog in competition in the division. Second place receives one point less than first, third receives two points less than first, fourth receives three points less than first, and so on.-10 Dogs In Class-1st Place Receives 10 Points2nd Place Receives 9 Points3rd Place Receives 8 Points4th Place Receives 7 Points 5th Place Receives 6 Points6th Place Receives 5 Points

The standings list the top ten dogs in each breed that accumulated the most points during a calendar year.

*Excellent B "dogs" MUST receive a score of 100, a flawless run, or will be Disqualified, (DQ'd.)*

MACH Rating Point System (Master Agility Champion)

1) Standard Runs-Excellent B (AX) ONLY

2) Jumps with Weaves (JWW)-Excellent B (AXJ) ONLY

MACH points are earned by the number of seconds under Standard Course Time. (SCT) If the dog places 1st, the MACH points are doubled for that run. 2nd place, the dog earns 1.5 times the points for that run. 3rd & so on, the dog earns 1 point for each FULL second under SCT.

Example: SCT is 40 Sec.-1st dog ran it in 30 sec., they receive 20 MACH points.(10 sec. Under SCT. 10 points 10 X 2 = 20 MACH points)

-2nd dog ran it in 32 sec. they receive 12 MACH points(8 sec. under SCT. 8 points 8 X 1.5 = 12 MACH points)

-3rd dog ran it in 40 sec., they receive 0 MACH points(0 sec. under SCT. 0 MACH points)

If time is 32.59, the time would be considered as 33 sec. (7 sec. Under SCT or 7 MACH points.) If time is 32.01 sec. round up to 33 sec. If MACH points end up being a 1/2 point (.5) round down. (10.5 MACH points round down to 10 MACH points.)

American Water Spaniel Obedience Point SystemScoring Changes Effective in Year 2000

By Lola Thorsness

The AWS Obedience Standings are calculated by adding all qualifying scores from January 1st through De-cember 31st, for each division, i.e., Novice, Open, and Utility. Overall standings are calculated by adding to-gether the total scores accumulated from each division. For Example, an AWS earns a perfect 200 score in 3 shows, that dog has earned 600 AWS Obedience Points.

Page 37 The “Mini” REVIEW July 2006 Issue 3

Obedience Point System, con’t.

**** Note: ALL standings are for dogs competing in AKC Licensed Show and Trials ONLY. ****

First and Foremost Rating System

This system ranks only dogs that have earned points in Novice, Open, or Utility competition during the previ-ous year. Points towards a First and Foremost Ranking are awarded based on the dog's score according to the following table of qualifying scores.

Score First & Foremost Points 200 8199 - 199.5 7195 - 198.5 6190 - 194.5 5185 - 189.5 4180 - 184.5 3175 - 179.5 2170 - 174.5 1

For Open A / B & Utility A / B, the top 10 in each group and the top 4 in each breed are listed and given hon-orable mention in Front & Finish. Owners of these dog are notified and asked to submit photos for the annual pictorial section in Front & Finish.

Obedience Trial Championship Point Rating System

This system ranks only Utility Dogs that have earned points towards their obedience trial championship in the previous years. To be included the dog must have one at least one championship point. The top four dogs in each breed are listed in Front & Finish.

Delaney System

The Delaney System ranks dogs that place first through fourth in every obedience class. One point is earned for each dog defeated in the class competition. In a class of twenty competing dogs the first place winner would receive 19 points as it defeated this number. The second placing dog would receive 18, third place 17 points, and fourth place 16. Points in each class are awarded based on the number of dogs competing in that class.

All Records are tabulate by staff of volunteer statisticians. Readers who keep their own dogs or breed records can help these people by sending their information to the statistician. Everyone strives for accuracy but with in many thousands of scores published in the AKC Show Records Supplement errors can occur.

The First and Foremost System was devised and administered by the late Nancy Shuman of St. Louis. The sys-tem's purpose was to honor dog's that were consistent as well as high scoring in Open A / B and Utility A / B Competition. And now in 2000, added to Fist and Foremost System -- Novice A / B. Kent Delaney devise the system bearing his name. Its purpose is to honor those dogs that worked with the quality needed to place in each of the obedience classes.

tinely obtain on all of your breeding stock? OFA hip certification, CERF eye certification? How do you temperament/aptitude test your puppies?

At what age do your puppies go to their new homes? Why did you choose to breed these two particular dogs

to each other? What physical characteristics and personality traits do

you expect from this breeding? Price? What guarantee do you give with a puppy?
