Last Friday, 172 students and guests along with 28 Gleeson College staff gathered together at Sfera’s Convention Centre at Modbury for the highly-anticipated Year 12 ‘Winter Wonderland’ Formal in honour of the first day of the winter season!

The evening provided an opportunity to momentarily divert attention away from any upcoming assessments and stresses associated with Year 12. It allowed us to celebrate our achievements and the friendships and relationships forged, for many of us, over the last five years and also highlighted how grateful we are to be part of such an amazing community here at Gleeson College and how the memories we make now will last forever!

We were extremely fortunate to have Event Photo and Mrs Antonietta Sergi, a pre-service teacher, as our official photographers to ensure many great moments were captured throughout the night. THE SACRED HEART + SCHOOL WIDE PEDAGOGY

The Sacred Heart and School Wide Pedagogy - What is the link?Today is the feast of the Sacred Heart celebrated on Friday 19 days after Pentecost.

Your heart pumps about 100,000 times a day to keep your lifeblood flowing through you. For this reason it has become a symbol for our very selves. We say, “I put my heart into it” and “I want that with all my heart.” The heart also is a symbol for love, perhaps because it seems to beat faster when we are in love. The biblical image of the heart means the depth of our selves where we decide for or against God. God, who always speaks to us using our own experiences, has chosen our symbol of the heart to represent Jesus. The heart of Jesus was a human heart like ours. It stopped beating the day Jesus was crucified. According to the Gospel of John, after Jesus had died a soldier made sure of his death by piercing his side with a lance. Blood and water ran out (19:34). Jesus’ pierced heart became a sign of the completeness of his love for us, a love that compelled him to die for us and that prompted him to remain with us in the bread and wine of the Eucharist. The physical heart of Jesus is the symbol of the total love of Jesus, divine and human. (https://www.loyolapress.com/our-catholic-faith/scripture-and-tradition/devotions/the-sacred-heart)How does the Sacred Heart connect to Gleeson College and more particularly to our School Wide Pedagogy? Over the past 18 months we have been working on developing a school wide pedagogy at Gleeson College which will underpin our teaching and learning into the future. The following is an extract from the document which will be launched later this year.

“The Gleeson College motto, With One Heart, is the translation of Archbishop

Gleeson’s motto ‘Cor Unum’. In our patron’s first letter to the College,

he said “I leave you with this hope of mine: that Gleeson College will always

be of ’One heart’ in every aspect of its life and mission.” Our community is therefore founded on the commitment of Archbishop James Gleeson to the

charism of the heart and our desire to learn, grow and share ‘with one heart’. At Gleeson College, all members of our

community aim to fulfil the College’s Vision through our ten core values

known as the Gleeson 10 and our staff commit to working together through the Gleeson Staff 5. We believe that

excellent pastoral care allows students to thrive and is an important precursor

to learning well. Therefore, we are committed to the heart of pastoral care: Peace and Harmony, Dignity

and Respect, Compassion, Truth and Justice.

At Gleeson College, we are dedicated to excellence in learning and teaching

and so we commit to the HEART of learning and teaching. That is, where learning and teaching are

Holistic, promote Engagement, seek Authenticity, build Resilience and

foster Teamwork.

We live in a world where life-long learning is paramount to developing capable, skilled and thriving people who are able to use their talents and abilities to their fullest potential. It is our role to know our students well,

tailor our teaching to their needs and build their resilience in an ever-changing

world. We acknowledge and promote collaboration and whole-hearted

engagement in authentic learning. We look forward with hope and joy to the contribution our graduating students

will make to the world.”

As you can see, the ethos of the heart is strong at Gleeson College and you will be hearing more about the school wide pedagogy as the year progresses.

Semester AssemblyOn Wednesday this week, our College Community was treated to a wonderful ensemble of music and performing arts, presentations, recollections of events and news of future events at our end of semester assembly. It is truly amazing to consider how many opportunities our students are offered at Gleeson College over and above classroom learning. Even more amazing are the brilliant

talents that our students possess. Of course, it would be remiss of me not to mention the incredible work of our staff in supporting our students in all the co-curricular and extracurricular activities they undertake.

We celebrated much and have much to look forward to next semester.

Mr J Corbo,Deputy Principal

The thoughts, prayers and supportof our Gleeson College community are with Trent Wallace (Year 12) and his family on the recent passing of

his maternal Grandfather.

May he rest in peace and God comfort his family and friends

at this sad time.

With Sympathy

Rest In Peace

YEAR 10 FOOD & HOSPITALITY > Eye Opening Visit to Le Cordon BleuLast Friday, our Year 10 Food &

Hospitality General Class visited Le Cordon Bleu at Regency Park. Students ventured on a tour around the culinary college and had the opportunity to see

the facilities and courses on offer.

All Chefs were friendly and invited us into their classes; students were very impressed with the detailed

chocolate sculptures and the Chef’s demonstration area. Other industry spaces included the cheese-making

room, butchery, patisserie, food science and technology, wine

appreciation and beer brewery.

While touring we even bumped into Gleeson Old Scholar Jessica Greet

who has recently completed her Patisserie certificate and is about to

head off on her six-month placement in the industry (see top photo).

After our tour, we dined in the student restaurant TIROS. Here the Commercial Cookery students put what they have learnt into practice.

The theme and menu of the day was British food. We all tried a new food and were impressed with the

presentation and service.

Student Comments >“The food presentation was good as there was a variety of colours on each of the dishes and they

were placed in an elegant fashion. We also enjoyed the chocolate

room because it was cool to see a different art form using food!”

- Ruby, Dylan, Ashton & Liana

“Having the Chef explain to us the different techniques used to make the chocolate sculptures was great, especially how they got the colours on there and that it was edible! We enjoyed the service and the waiting staff were very nice and catered to

our needs.”

- Sophia & Annabelle

“Everyone was really nice and welcoming. They asked us about our interests and answered all of our questions. All of the different

facilities were interesting to see and it was cool to learn about all the different opportunities on offer. It was nice to experience foods from

the British-inspired menu.”

YEAR 10 OUTDOOR ED > Mambray Creek Bushwalking CampAlthough the mornings and nights

were a bit on the chilly side, the Year 10 Outdoor Education Class were sent good weather for their three-day bush walking camp through Mambray Creek

in the Flinders Ranges recently.

Completely self-sufficient, students had to plan and cook their own meals and carry all of their supplies for the

expedition, whilst carefully navigating the gorges and trails of Mambray.

Arriving at lunchtime on Day 1, students scoped out the campsite area and completed a short day hike before

setting up camp for the night. After a cold night filled with the ‘soothing sounds’ of wildlife, Day 2 required

an early start (much to the students’ dismay) to tackle an 18km hike taking in Battery Ridge before night fall. The last day of our expedition took in the

beauty of Alligator Gorge and student spirits were buoyed at the thought of returning to civilisation and a nice, hot shower! Well done to all students for taking up the challenge, particularly

the Day 2 hike, and a big thank you to Mr Simon Barratt for accompanying us on our journey. I hope this camp has provided students with some lifelong memories and confidence in bushcraft

so that they might enjoy their own adventures in the future!

Our Open Boys KO Football Team ventured to Charles Campbell College to compete in the second round of the

Statewide Competition last week.

The boys got off to a fast start, kicking six goals to two in the opening quarter.

Caleb North (12 DSAKN) nailed two goals in the opening period and looked

dangerous up forward. The game tightened up in the second quarter and

became an arm wrestle. Both teams managed to score two majors, allowing Gleeson to maintain a strong lead at the major break. Charles Campbell came out strong in the third and put the pressure on by kicking multiple goals. Gleeson

was able to steady by quickly responding in-turn to maintain a comfortable lead.

The fourth quarter was much of the same. Another hot start by Charles Campbell, resulting in them hitting the scoreboard and clawing back into contention. Our defensive six faced significant pressure

with the opposition winning the majority of the ball out of the centre. Elliott

Brogden (12 HSRAN) and Daniel Trepka (12 DSHUT) led the defence well to prevent further scores. Year 9 player Bailey Gal (9 FMHER) inspired with

some fantastic efforts in defence, which seemed to instil the belief in the group.

The talented duo of Jak Kairl-Prosser (12 DSVAU) and Will Cansdell (12 HSPLL)

stood tall and kicked big goals late in the last quarter to seal the game. Josef Rack (12 MSSEL) was declared best on ground

at final siren for his outstanding four-quarter effort.

All players displayed a terrific attitude and deserved the result after a hard

fought contest. We now look forward to Round 3 of the competition.

YEAR 7 WORLD FOOTBALLERS SHARE A KICK WITH JORDAN ELSEY!Gleeson Old Scholar Jordan Elsey returned to his high school pitch to work with our Year 7 World Football

Program Class on Wednesday afternoon.

The Adelaide United FC star defender assisted Specialist Program Head Coach Dion Kirk run the students

through a skills session, offering advice and answering any questions our

young footballers had.

Thank you for visiting us Jordan, sharing your knowledge and expertise and for being such a great role model for our GC footballers! We even saw the ‘Emu’ after Jordan managed to find the back of the net - he said it

had been a while!!

Over the past few weeks, the Year 10 Specialist Netball Class used their collective minds to design, organise

and facilitate a Primary Schools Netball Carnival for three of our local primary schools and our own Year 7 Specialist

Netball Class.

The Year 10 students took charge of all aspects of the carnival from the

initial invites being sent out, carnival schedules and rosters, first aid and equipment supplies to coaching,

scoring, umpiring and even organising catering for the day! The three

local primary schools contesting this inaugural contest, along with our

Gleeson Year 7 Netball Team, were Our Lady of Hope School (OLOH),

Golden Grove Primary School (GGPS) and St Francis Xavier’s Catholic School

(SFX). After three minor rounds of competition and a Semi Final, the

Grand Final saw SFX take on GGPS, which was a true nail biter... SFX narrowly winning by one goal to

take the 2018 title!

By all accounts, the invited teams had a wonderful time, enjoyed the varied

opposition and the snacks prepared by Ms Curtis’ Year 10 Child Studies Class! I cannot express how proud I am of all

these students for their enthusiastic and mature approach to this event,

their ability to work collaboratively and cohesively on this task, and the final

‘game day’ performance.

I would like to say a big thank you to my fantastic Year 10 Specialist Netball

Class for all your efforts, Ms Curtis and her amazing Child Studies Class

for organising our healthy snacks, and to all of our primary school staff and students for participating in this

exciting initiative.

YEAR 8&9 KO SOCCER BOYS PROGRESS THROUGH THE FIRST ROUNDThe opening round of the Year 8/9 Boys Knockout Soccer competition

saw us travel to play Parafield Gardens High School and Craigmore High

School. Both games were tight affairs with Gleeson victorious 3-2 in the first game against Parafield Gardens HS, and then backing up this result with

another 3-2 win over Craigmore HS in the second game.

The opening game started well enough with Gleeson taking a 2-0

lead and gaining the ascendancy in the match. Harper Locke (9 DMDAS) was able to follow up a loose ball in the box to open the scoring and this

was followed by a rocket of a free kick from David Mapstone (9 HMSCH).

Unfortunately, defensive lapses cost us and saw us concede twice to leave the game at 2-2 with only minutes to play. In the dying minutes, Mapstone was able to break though the defence to

finish on his left foot past the keeper to ensure the win.

The second game against Craigmore HS was a tough battle throughout.

After conceding early on in the game, Mapstone was once again able to

pull the team level, another perfectly struck free kick found its way past the keeper off the under-side of the cross

bar. Craigmore again regained the lead early into the second half and with Gleeson desperately in need of a reply, it was Mapstone to the

rescue unleashing from 30 yards to beat the keeper in the top corner. The momentum had begun to swing our way and with five minutes remaining, Riley Aistrope (9 MMCUA) was able to get past the last defender before

slotting the ball calmly past the oncoming keeper to win it for Gleeson.

The boys played well in patches, but know that there is room for

improvement before our next game. The team will no doubt be better for the run and getting some game time

playing together and are looking forward to taking on their next

opponent after progressing through to the second round of the competition.
