Achieving the WACE

• Complete a minimum of 20 course units or equivalents

• One pair from list A ( English / Arts/ languages /social sciences)

• One pair from list B ( Mathematics/ Science /technology)

• Study 2 year 11 units of English & 1 pair of year 12 English units

• Achieve a C average or better across 14 course units of which 6 must be at year 12 level

Achieving the WACE

• Complete at least 4 ATAR courses oror• Complete a certificate II or higher

• Demonstrate literacy & numeracy standards through passing OLNA or prequalification in year 9 NAPLAN ( achieving band 8 or above)

UNIVERSITY REQUIREMENTS 2017

To be considered for university admission as a school leaver an applicant must achieve:

• WACE• competence in English • a high enough ATAR for the selected course• any prerequisites or special requirements of a

particular course i.e. folio, performance or interview

What is an ATAR and who gets one?

An ATAR is a tertiary entrance ranking which is used to rank students between 99.5 and zero

It is used to determine who gets university placements

Only students who have 4 or more ATAR courses in Year 12 will get an ATAR

DETERMINING THE ATAR

Is as follows:

• TEA is the total of the best 4 scaled scores (score out of 400)

• TEA converted to ATAR.• The TEA is made up of 50% the school mark and 50%

the WACE exams

• Use to write down homework, assignment due dates, test dates and things to remember

• Check them• Use them to make ‘to do lists’ once at home• Proper use will help you set priorities for

homework and study• Make sure you don’t just look at tomorrow

look forward and plan how to cope with busy times

Study Timetables• You should be doing about 12-15 hours per week if you

are working towards an ATAR ( more in the lead up to exams)

• Students not working towards an ATAR should be doing about an hour a day at least 6 days a week

• Draw up a timetable and try and stick to it• Students may need to draw up a new one each week• For ATAR students timetable should include a time each

week which is revision of old work not current work• Be aware of peak times and use them when working out

the timetable• The plan should be realistic and sustainable• The idea is if you work hard in the quiet weeks you will

cope better with the busy weeks

• Spread times over the week don’t leave it all until weekends

• Plan breaks ( they actually help your effectiveness)• Do harder subjects first when you are fresher• Use all the time allocated, Don’t stop once tomorrows

on study ( especially if you are an ATAR student

• Organise files• Daily Review of each subject that Day• Start assignments that may not be due for

several weeks• Study ! ( The idea is that you start preparing

for tests as soon as the topic starts)• If you are an ATAR student revise old work

( its coming back in the next exam)

What to do in the study bit?

• Set a goal for the available time. This enables you to have a sense of achievement and focuses their study

• Do something active don’t just flick through your file or text book and read

• At the end of the study time you should revisit your goal

• Test your learning• Evaluate the study. Did the method work? If not try a

different study technique next time you have similar work to learn

• Brainstorming without looking• Organising information into tables• Making a mind map• Making vocab cards and testing yourself with them

Top Tips For Students• Make a commitment to your studies and have a year 11 attitude• Make sure you are proud of every piece of work you hand in• Use your diary• Make up a study plan and try to stick to it• Don’t disregard the value of small amounts of time ( they add up)• Ask for help from teachers• Don’t work too many hours at your part-time job• Evaluate your study methods and if they are not working be

prepared to try new techniques• Get plenty of sleep, eat well and stay healthy• Start studying for your exams NOW!• If you want an apprenticeship or traineeship make sure you do you

get the best grades you can and think about doing Workplace Learning
