Exam and Controlled Assessment dates: Art Examination - 27th and 28th April

Exam paper breakdown: The Externally Set Assignment is worth 40% of the GCSE. Preparatory period: Minimum 20 hours Sustained focus: 10 hours - Examination The process of producing work for assessment begins once you receive the paper (w/b 25th January 2016). You should develop your response to the theme in a personal, creative way. The preparatory period consists of a of minimum 20 curriculum hours. You should be producing supporting studies, developing, refining and recording your ideas towards the final outcomes. The period of sustained focus consists of no more than ten hours working under supervised examination conditions, in an appropriate studio setting, producing your final outcomes in response to the theme.

Currently, Tuesday twilight is held for those people that still need to retake controlled assessments or have any outstanding assessments. We would expect this all to be in order by the end of February. In English Language it is essential controlled assessments are at your target grade to give you the best chance of achieving this grade overall. Exam Date: Unit 2: The Writers’ Voice - Tuesday 7th June.

Exam paper breakdown: English Language Unit 2: The Writers’ Voice. This is your only exam but is worth 60% of your overall grade. It is 1 hour 45 minutes long. Part A: Of Mice and Men. This section is approximately an hour long and has two parts. You will analyse the

language in a printed extract, then analyse the language in an extract of your choice relating to the given question.

Part B: Writing. This section is an hour long. This will consist of a choice of two questions. You choose one. You

will write a non-fiction piece of writing. It might be a leaflet, a letter or a speech, on any given topic.

In order to prepare for this exam, you should learn 8-10 key extracts from Of Mice and Men well. The extracts should cover all the characters and all the themes. You should make notes about how Steinbeck presents characters and themes in these extracts, and be able to look at how the extract uses language to do this. For the writing question, make sure you know the conventions of a speech, article, leaflet and letter. Revise AFOREST PRAM, punctuation and planning. All questions must be answered. Part B: Of Mice and Men. This will consist of a choice of two questions. One is on character and one is on

themes. You will choose a question and write about why this character or theme is significant across the novel. You will need to include relevant context in your answer.

English Literature Unit 2: Understanding Poetry is 25% of your overall Lit grade. It is also 1 hour 45 minutes long Part A: Responding to an unseen poem. Part B: Comparing two poems you have studied from the Clashes and Collisions section. One poem will be

named, whilst you get to choose the other.

Revision sessions: Revision sessions will be held on April 8th for both papers, and Tuesday nights will then focus on Literature and Language revision. Before Easter, you are welcome to come to English any Tuesday. Staff will work with you to help you revise the key areas you feel you need to work on.

Key topics: First and foremost you MUST make sure you know both texts. This means you must read and re-read them. You then need to make sure you revise the characters of each novel, the themes of each novel and language techniques/PEEE skills. For Animal Farm, learn key extracts. For Of Mice and Men, do essay plans for both characters and themes, as well as key quotations. Make sure you also revise the social and historical context behind Of Mice and Men, such as the American Dream. This will put you in the best place possible for the exam.

Exam paper breakdown: Each exam paper will be out of 60 marks. The questions will include some short answer questions and at least one longer answer question worth six marks. Questions will test recall and knowledge of scientific information, application to different situations as well as skills and investigation.

Exam and Controlled Assessment dates: Completing two GCSEs - Core Science and Additional Science - each made up of 75% exams and 25% controlled assessment Two controlled assessments (ISAs) - completed in November and January. Exam paper breakdown: Each exam paper will be out of 60 marks. The questions will include some short answer questions and at least one longer answer question worth six marks.
