…Year 11 Prom We can just let the smiles on the photos do the talking for this
one! Well done to Year 11 for making it to the end of the year
and a gruelling examination season. The year group were all
smiles and looking AMAZING at their prom last week as they
celebrated together on a glorious summer evening at Aintree.
We look forward to seeing you all again in August to celebrate
your results. Have a great summer, relax and have fun!
…Literary Inspiration On 2 July the students involved with the Multi Genre Literature project were treated to a lecture on ‘The
Strange Case of Dr.Jekyll and Mr Hyde’. Alumnus Dr Emma Deeks, a graduate of Chester University and
Edge Hill University, returned to Formby High School to present on ‘The Duality of Man’ and symbolism in
Victorian literature. Dr Deeks has achieved a PhD in English Literature and is currently researching the
theory of ‘Feminine Anonymity’ in autobiographical texts. Students spent an hour in the morning gathering
notes independently and demonstrated outstanding maturity, focusing on a challenging subject. In the
afternoon the students participated in a seminar discussion session, working in
groups to collate their evidence on key sections of the first chapter. In groups
the students then presented to the rest of the group and Dr Deeks and Mr
Mackenzie. Their confidence in presenting and ability to clearly articulate ideas
was thoroughly inspiring. We hope our young learners will go on to pursue their
interests in literature beyond school and will also, one day, return to share their
success with the future FHS community. This event followed shortly after the
school’s participation in ‘National Writing Day’ on
Wednesday 26 June, an annual celebration of writing designed to inspire
people across the UK to get writing. The message was simple: everyone has a
story to tell and sharing it can be a source of pleasure and power. Every
English lesson across Years 7 to 12 participated in the event by writing pieces
and short stories, and samples of the excellent work can be found in English
rooms across the school!
Issue No.108 – 5 July 2019
… “It's not how much we give
but how much love we put into giving.” The above quote by Mother Theresa captures perfectly how Team FHS comes
together for a great cause. We celebrate frequently through this newsletter
the fantastic work by our students, staff and parents to support a vast array
of charitable causes. Just recently, one of our Year 10 students, Rachel,
coordinated a fundraising cake sale to support The Big Tiny Steps Appeal
and CDH UK. The Big Tiny Steps Appeal supports Liverpool Women’s
Neonatal Unit to continue to provide world class care to sick babies and
their families, and CDH UK helps support
families affected by Congenital
Diaphragmatic Hernia and funds research to improve treatment. These
charities are very special to Rachel and her family who have been involved
with them through their own family experiences and wanted to help give
back. The incredible support of the school community helped them raise
£213 through their cake sale! Thank you, as always, to everyone for their
support. As the newsletter is being written today, the school is also coming
together to support the Kalule School in Uganda
– there is a cake sale taking place and also a marketplace selling unique, hand-
made Ugandan crafts which will see 100% of the funds raised being sent back
to support the charity. We will update you with a total in the next newsletter
when all the money has been counted by the elves! Last Thursday was the first
meeting for the students who have volunteered to be part of the FHS Charity
Committee. The Charity Committee will invite nominations from their peers for
the charities they would like to support and will meet half termly to put plans
together. The school is very proud of the charity work that takes place and the
citizenship and generosity of students, staff and parents.
…A Little RESPECT FHS has rebranded its PSHEE (Physical Social Health and Economic
Education) curriculum to RESPECT so that it more appropriately captures
all the vital elements of this aspect of the curriculum and all the hard
work that takes place on these areas every day here at FHS. To
celebrate this, we have developed a fantastic new video for parents,
present and future, to communicate the changes and why this is so important
to the school. We will launch the video on our website next week – watch out
on ParentMail for the link! RESPECT covers areas such as keeping healthy,
staying safe and managing money as well as focusing on specific areas such as
Drugs Education and Sex and Relationships Education. Lessons develop skills
such as co-operative working and speaking and listening. Students also learn
about topics like how the country is governed at a local and national level,
aspects of the law which relate to them and about the ways in which people
can engage in democratic processes and take action to promote their views
and help others. Lessons foster an understanding of the UK as a diverse society
and the importance of mutual respect and tolerance. Students are actively
encouraged to think of others and contribute to the wider community and
whole school project.
…A Taste of Theatre On 4 July students from Year 9 Drama enjoyed a workshop at Edge Hill University by Tmesis Theatre. The
company taught a practical fun and energetic workshop which explored working as an ensemble. Our
students engaged in devising physical sequences and creating characters. It was an excellent afternoon and
everyone learnt new skills to benefit their future performances!
…Year 7 Cultural Capital 40 Year 7 students represented the school as fantastic ambassadors,
exploring central London over three days last week. First up was the
Natural History Museum, where students enjoyed the diverse and active
world exhibitions as well as getting photographs of the famous
Hintze Hall with the Blue Whale skeleton. They defied gravity at
the ‘Wicked’ production at the Apollo Victoria theatre in London’s
West End and also visited the very entertaining London
Dungeons. The students thoroughly enjoyed the residential and
our London tour guide Liz commented that the students had been
a delight to take around the city centre, despite the persistent
rain. Well done, Year 7!
…La Dolce Vita! Ready for La Dolce Vita? The University of Liverpool provided yet another
buenissimo taster languages session – this time in Italian with visiting Italian
assistants to help out. Federica Sturani, visiting lecturer, talked with students
in Years 8 to 10 about Italian culture, when to drink cappuccino, and how to
meet and greet in Italian. Students in Year 12 also had their own tutorial
including the ways that languages can combine with subjects at
university. Federica said, "It was a pleasure to deliver the Italian taster
sessions to students who demonstrated enthusiasm for, and engagement
with, languages. I was impressed by the excellent behaviour of all students, and their level of participation
to the activities. I hope they will all continue to enjoy learning languages, and consider adding Italian to
their list!!"
…Formby’s Got Talent Yet another stunning Year 7 Formby’s Got Talent Competition took place at the end of
June, involving a variety of acts and performances competing for this year’s title. Well
done to all the performers who made the judges’ (Mrs Blanchard, Mr Cook and Mrs
Thomas) task to choose a winner a hard one. The winner was Hannah (dancer) with
runners up Heather (harpist) and Jack (comedian).
…Code-breaking at Bletchley Park On Thursday 23 June 2019, 23 Computer Scientists travelled to Bletchley
Park, 'the Home of the Code-breakers', to see how computers were first used
to create and crack the codes used during the war. Students learned about
the history behind the famous British Intelligence compound and learned
about all of the important people who worked behind the scenes. Following
in the footsteps of Alan Turing, the class were given the chance to use an
original Enigma machine to encode and decode messages and learn
more about how important computers were in speeding up the process
of reading the enemy messages. Students and teachers all had a great
time and everyone involved was impressed by how mature and
enthusiastic the members of our school were throughout the entire trip.
We are already looking forward to going again next year!
…Y12 Finding their Future Friday 12 July will see our Sixth Form team host the ‘Finding Your Future’ day here at FHS for Year 12
students. The day, designed to support students with their post 18 pathways, will involve a number of
informative workshops covering topics such as UCAS, personal statements, student finance, interviews and
writing CVs.
…Echo Special Recognition Award At the 2019 Liverpool Echo Schools Awards, Formby High School received a
Special Recognition Award in Memory of Miriam McQueen, our colleague and
friend who sadly passed away earlier this year. The award recognised the
tremendous contributions Miriam made to the development of FHS and was
presented to members of her family and the school community.
Mundo Perform with The Lion King
On 21 June, Mundo Afrika travelled back down to London to perform at the TES
Schools Awards, alongside Rafiki from ‘The Lion King’. This
event was the result of our partnership with Disney UK
which blossomed following our TES Creative School of the
Year award which they sponsored. Disney and TES
extended a special invitation to us to open this event with
the cast. What an amazing opportunity for our Mundo
Afrika Choir who delivered a fantastic rendition of the
‘Circle of Life’ with Rafiki to a packed audience at The Grosvenor House Hotel in
London.
…Growth project Students in Years 7 and 8 who are taking part in the Growth Project (through the Windmills
Foundation), completed a First Aid and CPR course this week. They
learnt how to put someone into the recovery position and provide
potentially life saving CPR. The students exhibited true Formby High
qualities in their motivated and supportive approach to learning new
skills and were presented with certifictes to recognise their completion
of the course.
…Summer Showcase There are few better ways to celebrate another busy and
successful year at FHS than with our finale Creative Arts event,
the Summer Showcase ‘Liverpool Inspires’. In a departure from
our customary end of year event, this year brings a special
collaborative evening featuring a wide range of music, drama
and dance performances which celebrate, recognise and honour
the unique cultural diversity and heritage of our fantastic city
region. The showcase promises to be a fabulous evening
featuring over 100 students from across all year groups at FHS
and we encourage you to come along. It takes place at 7pm on
Thursday 11 July at The Atkinson Theatre in Southport. Tickets
for the event are priced at £8.50 for adults and £7.50 for concessions and can be purchased via The
Atkinson Booking Office by clicking here.
