Year 11 Exam Support 20
15
The aim of this booklet is to provide both parents and students alike with a reference point for additional support for the fast approaching summer examination season.
Each course is outlined with a brief overview, course requirements and coursework deadlines, additional support session arrangements, the all important summer exam date, and staff contact details for further information. There are also study skills and exam strategies after the course information if required.
I would also strongly advise students to apply for sixth form and college courses as soon as possible to prevent disappointment; help and support is available to all students regardless of pathway through the Careers department here at Medina.
I do hope that you find this publication useful and wish your child the very best of luck for the upcoming exams.

Exam Strategies
When it comes to studying think of the 5 ‘S’s:
Study Space Study Schedule Revision Strategies Stress management Work Strategically
Study
Skills and
Exam Strategies
Study Space It is important to find a space where you can work comfortably, with minimal distractions. This might be in your bedroom, a local café or the school library. For some people background noise helps them concentrate, whilst other people need silence – think about what works best for you.
Think about the equipment you will need to study/revise & have it close to hand e.g.:
• Dictionary• Pens, pencils & paper • School notes, text books & work books
Try & work in a place where your posture will be supported & the lighting is good so that you do not get back, neck or headaches. Study ScheduleTime management is an important skill both at school & in the workplace. A study schedule will help you produce your best work, & avoid stress & panic.
Try & do your homework at roughly the same time each day. Look at your homework diary & think about how long the homework (or revision) for each subject should take. Add up all this time, & think about when you can fit this time into your week (or term). It is important to schedule some rest & relaxation as well e.g. if you go to any clubs, organise your homework timetable around these other commitments.
Break your study time up into approximately 30-minute slots with a 5-minute break – this helps the brain keep alert & remember things.
Try & stick to 5-minute breaks though! E.g. get a drink, do some stretches, listen to your favourite song. (Don’t turn on the TV – you might get hooked!)
Revision Strategies
Revision needs to be an active process to be effective – simply reading over your notes does not keep you engaged & so is not only boring, but doesn’t work very well. Our memory stores information in a variety of ways – visually, physically & auditorily (i.e. sounds). Using all of these senses to revise makes it easier to recall information, because you have more ways to trigger that memory.
Here are some revision strategies designed to be active, engaging, & that use a variety of senses:
Colour codingUse different colours for different subjects or topics.
Mind Mapping Uses colours, pictures, & spatial organisation of ideas to build a map of any subject you need to revise.
Audio recordings Record yourself reading your notes, interspersed with a few of your favourite songs. Then you can listen to them at anytime & revise wherever you go. Remember to actively listen to your notes e.g. think about how the information connects with other ideas & possible exam questions.
Quiz cards Use index cards or cut up some paper to about A6 size. Put a question on one side & answer(s) on the opposite side. Then get someone to quiz you, or quiz yourself. If you revise as a group everyone can do cards for one topic – then bring them all together & have a revision quiz night!
Jigsaw cardsPut your question/date/ name on one half of the card, the answer/information you need to learn on the other & then cut a jagged line down the centre. Do this cut differently for each card. Then mix up all the cards & try to match them back together again. You learn whilst making the cards as well as when matching them.

Stress Management
Stress is not always a bad thing; a little bit of stress can motivate us to do our work, & even make us more efficient. However, if we feel very stressed, for a long time this can cause problems & make us feel unwell.
Ways to avoid stress becoming a problem are:
• Stick to your study schedule – including your rest & relaxation breaks
• Eat healthily
• Take regular exercise
Work Strategically
Keep your notes & files organisedThis saves you time &, your brain picks up a lot of information through the process of organising. So start your revision by organising your notes into topic areas.
Be a detective & look at past exam papers Are there any questions that keep coming up each year? If so, you should make sure you know how to answer them! Look at previous year groups’ coursework – what can you learn from their work?
Match your revision strategy to the exam requirementsFor example, if your science exam is likely to ask you to label a diagram of the skeleton, practice labelling diagrams rather than just learning a list of the skeleton parts by rote. If your exam requires you to write essays, practise writing essay plans & writing the essays within the exam time limit. Doing this increases the chances that you will be able to recall the right information in the exam, & complete the exam in the allocated time.
Avoid revising similar subjects in the same study session – they are more likely to get mixed up in your head & confuse you.
Work to your strengthsThink about how you learn best, & what motivates you. Do you like drawing? Use drawings to summarise topics. Do you like exercise? Build your revision into a physical game e.g. answering a question before taking a shot at goal.

GCSE Exam Season 2015 begins on
Tuesday 5th MayStudy leave will begin prior to the May half term holiday on
Friday 22nd May 2015There will be a number of subject spceific sessions available through both the Easter and May holidays; details will be available from teaching staff closer to these times.
During study leave students may attend school to work in quiet study areas if they wish. They must sign in and out in the reception area, wear full uniform, and only work in the allocated spaces.
They do not have to attend for any set amount of time however, and may arrive and leave when they wish. Students have previously found this provision invaluable as it allows an opportunity to study quietly away from any distractions.
Results day takes place on
Thursday 20th August 2015Results are available to collect from 9.30 from Medina College.
If you are unable to attend, results can be picked up by another person provided they attend on the morning of the 20th with a signed letter giving permission for collection.
Any results not collected on the day will be posted home.
