As Principal and Chief Executive of Crewe Engineering & Design UTC, I am delighted to welcome you to our school.

Based in the heart of Crewe, our UTC caters for students aged 14 – 19, offering a GCSE and A Level programme. Our aim is to meet the challenges of the future, as the need for more talented young people within the Engineering and Design sector increases. While studying with us, students will undertake exciting and challenging learning experiences, which will help develop them into young professionals and be able to follow a pathway to employment, higher apprenticeship or university.

We have worked closely with our students, parents/carers and employer partners to build an environment which allows students to have confidence in their own potential and a focus on striving towards future career goals. Crewe UTC has outstanding facilities, which have been built around the learning needs of our young people. We have a building dedicated to the teaching of Engineering and Design, with the latest industry standard equipment so students can develop hands on skills.

We are celebrating excellent success rates this year in our Engineering Technical Awards courses and 100% of our KS 4/5

students have secured a fantastic pathway into employment, apprenticeship or further education.

We welcome you to come to our open events held throughout the year, where you can find out more about our GCSE and A Level pathways and meet our staff and students.

Employers engage with UTCs through projects and work with staff to develop the curriculum. At a UTC, students will undertake technical, practical and academic learning and will work in a state-of-the-art facility with the latest equipment.

Francis Webb Building

Location

Create Build Grow

The Francis Webb building has undergone an amazing refurbishment, transforming the building into a facility which can offer students the best for practical learning. The building is a dedicated space for Engineering and Design and a base for Sixth Form.

The building features:

An Engineering and Fabrication workshop, kitted out with the latest industry standard equipment

A large design space which allows an environment for group work and includes a CAD suite

Several classrooms and computer suites

Dining area and changing spaces

Two playgrounds

A gym to support Health and Exercise

OfstedAfter our first ever inspection, Ofsted awarded the UTC a ‘good’ in all areas and was praised by inspectors for the quality of the education provided and for raising students’ aspirations. Some of the key findings included:

Pupils, including disadvantaged pupils and those with special educational needs and/or disabilities (SEND), make good progress from low starting points across a range of subjects.

Relationships between pupils and teachers are respectful. Pupils behave well. Rates of exclusions are well below the national average.

The curriculum has a strong focus on courses relating to the college’s specialisms. It is well matched to the needs and interests of pupils and the regional area.

Parents and carers are delighted with the education that their children receive.

All Year 11 pupils and Year 13 students go on to appropriate education, employment or training. They have many opportunities to develop employability skills through project work and work experience with employers

It is unusual for a new school, especially one with a very different ethos and stance on education, to achieve ‘Good’ across all categories in its first inspection. This achievement demonstrates that the core education that we offer as a school and Sixth Form is of high quality, even though our main focus is on helping our students find and prepare for their future careers.

The sponsors, governors, staff, students and employer partners are already making plans to develop Crewe UTC to become an outstanding school overall within the next three years and to demonstrate this at the next OFSTED inspection.

"The specialist facilities and excellent links with the engineering, manufacturing and design sectors, enable pupils to thrive." Ofsted 2019

Projects in the spotlight

Bentley Motors set year 10 students the task to design a Bentley car seat, considering the challenges in the industry, Bentley’s brand values and customer requirements. Students had to work in groups to investigate materials, research Bentley’s unique selling points, work on designs and even got to spend a day in Bentley’s workshop learning first hand from the experts. The students then had to present their ideas in the style of a mood board, which they then showcased in a market style event to Bentley employees. Their work was evaluated, received critical analysis and prizes were awarded to students in different areas, from intricate design ideas to outstanding leadership qualities.

Air Products gave our students 3 areas to look into: Gases in Welding, Liquid Nitrogen and Gases in food packaging. In small groups they had to create a presentation on their assigned area, which they would then deliver to representatives from Air Products. During the project, employees from Air Products came in to the UTC to deliver workshops to our year 10s, including a liquid nitrogen demonstration. Employer projects are worked into the curriculum and students gain additional skills such as boosting their confidence with presenting.
