Thinking about your options

In this booklet you will find the course profiles for all the options that are available to

study in Year 10 at Bredon School, from September 2015. There are a number of

great new courses, added to our exciting range of existing courses. We are

constantly reviewing what qualifications are available out there, so that you have the

best choices open to you.

Which courses you take will depend to an extent on how you have been getting on in

Year 9. It is important that you take courses in Year 10/11 that you can get good

grades in. We want to make sure everyone is on the right course, where the work is

neither too hard nor too easy. Getting the balance right means that you will have

exactly what you need to move to the next step, when you come to think about Sixth

Form options.

Some things to think about when choosing options:

Try to pick subjects that you are most interested in. You’ll probably be studying them for the next two years, so it is important to go for courses

that you will stay interested in, from start to finish.

Try to pick subjects that you are already doing well in. If you’re getting

on really well in a subject, it could be a sign that it is worth studying at a higher level in Year 10/11.

Getting on well with the subject teacher should never be the main reason

for choosing a subject, but if you know someone understands you well and how you learn, it can help you to make better progress on the

course.

Think about whether you prefer subjects that involve only coursework, a mix of coursework and exams or exams only. Remember, that studying

only courses that involve coursework can sometimes be harder, because you might find there is a lot of writing and project work to do.

Think carefully what you want to do when you finish Year 11. You should

try to choose courses now, which could lead to the kind of courses you

might hope to take in the Sixth Form.

The way that we timetable courses, sometimes means that you won’t get your first choice in each block of subjects. This is why we ask you to

give us a second choice, in case we are unable to offer the first choice. Remember that, until we have confirmed your options in writing, they

may need to change.

Finally, talk to your personal tutor, subject teachers and parents about your choices. It’s good to keep talking over and discussing what you are

going to do, before you make your final choices. It doesn’t mean that they can’t be changed later, but it is much better to try and make sure

that your options are right from day one.

Course levels and types

The different course levels and types available can be confusing at times. Courses

vary a lot and making good decisions is much easier when you know more about how

courses are taught, assessed and graded.

Entry Level courses are designed for pupils who are not yet ready to take GCSEs in a

particular subject area. They show achievement of pupils below the usual GCSE grading

range, meaning that a pupil who would not ordinarily get a pass at GCSE can receive a

qualification for what they are able to do. We use teachers’ judgements and pupil

performance data (like the CAT results) to help decide whether Entry Level courses are right

for a pupil. Where taking a GCSE is likely to result in a grade below E, we will nearly always

place that pupil on an Entry Level course. We will advise whether an entry level programme

is most appropriate and it may be the case that a GCSE could be followed in areas of

strength. However, many Entry Level pupils will only follow entry level qualifications, because

these suit them better across the board.

Level 1 courses are designed for pupils who are unlikely to get an A* to C at GCSE and need

a slightly more supportive pathway. We only offer a few qualifications at Level 1. They are

equivalent to D grades and below at GCSE for vocational qualifications such as the Cambridge

National Level 1 in Creative iMedia, but no prospective employer sees a ‘D’ grade, instead a

Pass, Merit or Distinction. Also, if you score below a C grade at GCSE, the qualification is

considered to be at Level 1 and not Level 2.

Level 2 courses include GCSEs (grades A* to C), OCR Level 2 qualifications and BTEC Level 2

qualifications. They are first studied in Years 10 and 11. Some pupils continue to study these

courses in the Sixth Form for a number of different reasons. Level 2 vocational courses are

often graded Pass, Merit and Distinction, which is normally equivalent to GCSE grades C, B

and A respectively. Level 2 vocational courses often equate to a minimum of a C grade at

GCSE, therefore they are not suitable for some pupils who are not working at that level.

There are two main types of qualifications. Both are suitable for later studying at a higher

level in Sixth Form or gaining employment. The table below explains more. Entry level

qualifications are another class, which combines elements of both types.

Academic/traditional Vocational GCSEs – Usually require learning theories, facts and ideas, applying

them to different situations and remembering them for an exam. There is often also controlled

assessments or coursework. There may be a limit on the number of times

that work can be re-attempted. Examinations in some GCSEs are also being placed solely in Year 11,

meaning that you do not get the chance to take part of the course at

the end of Year 10, as has been the case in previous years. Traditional GCSEs rely mainly on covering a wide

range of subject content and attempting to make sense of this, over

a long period of time.

OCR Nationals, Cambridge Technicals and Edexcel BTECs – Usually require

studying a range of topics and producing coursework in the form of projects, reports, essays, practicals, videos and

other assignments. Some of these courses also have a smaller ‘exam’ like

element, where work is marked outside of school, however, you can often retake these if you do not get the grade you

need. The main focus is on learning in a way that is more relevant to the

workplace, aiming to develop the skills needed to study the subject in a Sixth Form and become a very independent

learner. They are not easier than GCSEs, just a different way of learning and being

assessed.

Choosing your options

We place your subject choices into subject blocks. This means that you will need to

choose your preferred subject from each block. The reason we have to put subjects

in blocks is so that we can make sure that the best combinations of subjects are

available.

You will need to make a first choice and a second choice from each block shown

below. Sometimes courses have a minimum number of students, so if a course does

not run, we will place you into your second choice. We will let you know if this

happens and discuss it with you.

Here is our option block table below. You can only choose one first choice from each

block and one second choice. You do not need to make your final choices just yet.

We will send you a form to complete in February 2015 where you will make your

choices. This is to give you time to think about which subjects will be best for you.

You will notice that there are four option blocks. The way it works is, you choose four

first choice courses and four second choice courses. If you normally have SLS in Year

9, then you should choose SLS as one of your options for Year 10, meaning that you

will choose three other option subjects. This means that your learning support will

continue as normal. If you have not had SLS before and your teachers and parents

think it will be helpful in Year 10, it is possible to have learning support, but this is

likely to incur a charge.

We have spent a lot of time working on these options and hope that you will find a

selection of subjects that you will not only enjoy, but also take experiences and

memories that will stay with you for the rest of your life. We are dedicated to making

your future successful and by moving up into Year 10, you will be taking a major step

towards achieving your future aims and ambitions.

What will I study? You will learn the basic aspects of Agriculture on a principally livestock based Farm. You will learn how to provide Estate maintenance, The Principles of Livestock Husbandry with a

focus on Sheep Production and finally an introduction into Land-based machinery.

How is the course structured and graded? The Units are graded Pass, Merit Distinction. This is based on meeting certain criteria

throughout the coursework. A degree of written and independent learning is required reinforced by many practical sessions on the school farm.

Will this course be suitable for me?

The course involves a great deal of practical work and then followed up with evidenced based reports and assignments. You should enjoy working with animals and being outdoors. You may have studied the BTEC Level 2 in Countryside and Environment before, which is an

advantage, but not essential.

What have other students said about the course? “I found the course varied and interesting. I enjoy working and learning outside of the classroom so this subject is ideal for me. Being with the animals is the best bit and the

written work is ok and not too difficult.”

What could this course lead to? This course is aimed at pupils who may wish to study Agriculture to a higher level after

leaving school or those wishing to take Level 3 Agriculture in Bredon School’s Sixth Form.

of your final mark. The set task is developed over a term and is worth 40%. You will have a 10 hour exam in the Spring Term of Year 11 in which to complete 1 outcome for your set task Project. The course is graded on the usual GCSE scale.

Will this course be suitable for me?

To be successful on this course you will need to be enthusiastic and committed to the subject. We will require you to put an extra 3 hours on top of your timetabled lessons each week. If you are a creative and motivated student this is a fantastic course for you. We will

advise you whether a GCSE or alternative Level 1 option is the best route for you.

What have other students said about the course? “GCSE Art is a great start to the creative courses. It allowed me to work on a theme of my choice with the support and guidance throughout. It was my first glimpse of being an

artist.”

What could this course lead to? Students who take this course can go on to study it at AS/ A2 Level. This further opens the

Engineering, Edexcel Level 2 BTEC First Award

What will I study?

On this course you will learn about: How Engineering and Engineers have shaped the modern world, how products are resourced, designed and manufactured; how

Engineers and Engineering is in the forefront of making our plant a cleaner and

greener place; how Engineering is universal language spoken all over the world and how new production techniques are leading to more and more advanced product.

How is the course structured and graded?

This qualification is available in a 3 unit Award that is equivalent to a single GCSE.

In the first year we study Units covering; The Engineered World (this is a compulsory unit and is externally examined), Investigating Engineering Products

and Machining Techniques. These units are graded at a Pass, Merit, Distinction and Distinction*. These are equivalent to grades C, B, A and A* at GCSE Level.

Will this course be suitable for me?

This course is a mixture of continual assessment and a final exam. While containing a range of practical elements, it does have a written and research element. If you

have a genuine interest in Engineering and are hoping to develop your skills and

abilities with a view to a career in the engineering world, this is an ideal course for you. It will give you a spring board into the engineering world beyond Bredon

School. It is also an ideal companion subject to Math’s, Science and Law.

English Language, Cambridge iGCSE

What will I study? Recent government changes have meant that the new British GCSE specifications are no longer suitable for many pupils in the UK, with the speaking and listening element not

assessed, so we have decided to use the globally recognised International GCSE instead. This well-respected and popular course retains written coursework and speaking and

listening worth 40%. The final exam, worth 60%, tests reading and writing skills.

How is the course structured and graded? There are three pieces of written coursework to complete (two which test writing skills only

and a third which also tests reading skills) and these may be drafted in class and worked on until they are as good as possible. Pupils will also undertake a range of oral tasks with the best marks being submitted at the end. The terminal exam tests both reading and writing

skills. The final grading is the familiar A*-G range.

Will this course be suitable for me?

As a core subject, this course is compulsory. We have chosen the IGCSE because it is flexible and allows pupils to succeed at their highest possible potential.

What have other students said about the course? This is a brand new course for us, but the few Year 10 pupils who are currently doing it are

enjoying it. They particularly like the fact they are writing coursework which can be redrafted rather than controlled assessments which cannot.

What could this course lead to?

Many Level 3 courses and jobs cannot be undertaken unless you have a Level 2 qualification in English, so this course is really important, regardless of what you might like to do later in life. Pupils who do not get a C or above in GCSE English will always automatically do

retakes in Sixth Form, in line with government policy.

English Literature, Cambridge iGCSE

What will I study? If you are in set 1 for English you will automatically study this course alongside the iGCSE in Language. In it you will study a range of poems, plays and novels. Some of them will be

assessed through written coursework and some in the final exam. You will cover familiar and also unfamiliar texts in a course that is great for developing your enjoyment of

literature.

How is the course structured and graded? For the exam (worth 75%) you will study one play, one novel and one collection of poetry

from a wide and interesting range. The coursework requires the close study of two texts. These essays may be redrafted until they are as good as possible. The final grading is the familiar A*-G range.

Will this course be suitable for me?

If you are in set 1 you will already be enrolled on this course, but it can be easily managed alongside the iGCSE in Language. It is a really good preparation for A Level Literature in the Sixth Form, but also helps with any courses that involve a lot of reading and writing such as

History or Politics.

What have other students said about the course? Again, the iGCSE is a brand new course to us, but past students who have studied similar

GCSE courses have really enjoyed reading and thinking about the exciting texts involved.

What could this course lead to? It is a well-respected international qualification which shows colleges and employers you have the ability to read and understand a range of texts. Because of this, it is good

preparation for almost any future course of study or employment.

Film Studies, WJEC GCSE

What will I study? Using popular mainstream films as well as films from outside Hollywood, the course allows you to study the ways in which we experience films and how films communicate ideas,

attitudes and beliefs both now and in the past. You will really start to appreciate films in a different way, by analysing what brings everything together to make a blockbuster.

How is the course structured and graded? The course is divided into three parts. The first two parts form the examined content which tests your knowledge of film language based around a specific film genre. The second

section of the exam is based on films produced outside Hollywood. The internally assessed part of the course focuses on a study of a film of your own choice. This leads to a practical

production creating a moving image or promotional package product of your own.

Will this course be suitable for me? This course is designed to build upon your own experiences of film and to encourage a

recognition of how individuals and societies are represented. If you enjoy studying films, in addition to being motivated in bringing an initial idea to a polished completion, then you will enjoy GCSE Film Studies.

What have other students said about the course? "I enjoy this subject. We get the chance to do lots of work with films and also lots of other work with images. I also enjoy filming."

What could this course lead to?

GCSE Film Studies, in addition to being an interesting and enjoyable subject, provides an initial foundation for anyone interested in studying Media, Film or Digital Communication courses in Sixth Form.

What will I study? You will learn about many aspects of Sports Science, particularly thinking about injuries to the body and creating training programmes, from start to end. Time will be spent

discovering how to recognise injury and how to deal with recovery. You will also develop some practical skills in creating a training programme with all components.

How is the course structured and graded? This qualification is available in a 4 unit Certificate form (equivalent to a GCSE) and a 6 unit Introductory Diploma form (equivalent to a full A-Level). We will start by initially working

towards the first 4 units, which are studied usually at a rate of one each term. You can achieve the course at either a Pass, Merit, Distinction or D* Grade; equivalent to an C, B, A

or A* grade at GCSE respectively. Most of the course is assessed internally through coursework, but there is also a short examined (externally assessed) component.

Will this course be suitable for me? To be successful on this course, you need to have an enthusiasm for sport, be it playing

watching or just wanting to learn more about your body. The course involves quite a bit of writing, with PowerPoint presentations and practical lessons, not just playing sport but how

to analyse and recognise good practice this will give you a well-rounded view on sport from biological views to practical.

What have other students said about the course?

"I found that this course really helped to improve my writing, gave me confidence to talk to others about my subject, and my knowledge of how to look after myself increased. I now

have a clear idea of what I want to do in the future, thanks to this course."

What could this course lead to? Students taking this course have gone on to study sports related courses at Level 3 in our Sixth Form. Others have moved onto apprenticeships in the sport industry or employment

in personal training.
