There are so many great courses to choose from at JCU

“I received a lot of one-on-one contact with instructors and got to know my fellow students really well. It is important to me to feel as if I belong, and think these aspects of JCU life enriched my learning experience.”

Yael Relf Studying Bachelor of Planning

Thinking about uni?Check out the great benefits of gaining a university degree

Thinking aheadMost people know a university degree will increase employment options and financial security. The journey to getting a degree is important, as studying at university leads down a path to new ideas, skills, contacts and experience. It’s a way to learn, to explore your potential and to develop yourself into the person you want to become.

At this stage of your education, good planning is about choosing subjects that will open up the greatest number of career options when you finish school. This guide shows you the many study areas and degrees available at James Cook University (JCU). And it lists the school subjects (or prerequisite subjects*) required for entry into each course.

Staff members at the JCU Student Centre are available to answer questions. 1800 246 446 or email <[email protected]>

Valuable skills A degree gives competitive edge in the job market. Completing a degree at JCU ensures you are prepared and ready for work as soon as you graduate. Gaining a degree is proof of self-motivation, capability and commitment, attributes that are very attractive to prospective employers.

The Good Universities Guide 2014 gave JCU a 5-star rating (the highest rating) for the overall success of graduates in getting a job.

Higher starting salaries Tertiary education is crucial. Recent surveys of young Australians found that a university degree had a strong impact on earnings and occupations.

University graduates earn salaries that are 25 per cent higher than the average Australian salary. The mean starting salary for bachelor-degree graduates under 25 years of age in full-time employment is $49,000†.

International experience Travel as part of your degree, gaining valuable life and cultural experience in the process. Potential employers value foreign work experience. JCU qualifications are recognised internationally, opening up greater opportunities for graduates to travel and work worldwide.

Students can choose to include an international exchange semester over the course of their degree, spending six to 12 months at a partner university or in at the JCU campus in Singapore.

JCU has arrangements with more than 50 partner universities from 20 different countries, including Canada, Denmark, Ecuador, France, Germany, Great Britain, Korea, Mexico, Norway, Sweden, and the USA.

Make new friends University offers an opportunity to meet people of different ages, backgrounds and interests. Given the broad range of courses offered, the interests of the people who study differs a great deal. Study with international students from many different countries, Australian students from the bush and the city, and students who have had life experiences that vary greatly from your own.

The university experience expands your horizons of understanding, giving you an education that goes far beyond the classroom.

* Prerequisite subjects are Queensland Year 11 and 12 subjects completed with an exit assessment of Sound Achievement or better over four semesters. Applicants also need to achieve the overall performance (OP) or selection rank for their chosen degree.

Study at JCUJCU is ranked amongst the top 4 per cent of universities in the world*

Choice and flexibility JCU offers a wide choice of study areas. Study Law, Engineering, Accounting, Medicine, Dentistry, Business and Tourism. Or choose a study area that reflects the University’s tropical location and has the future of the tropical world as its focus: Tropical Medicine, Aquaculture, Tropical Biology and Ecology, Marine Science and Sustainability. JCU offers all of these areas and more.

Real world experience JCU places a strong emphasis on preparing students for the workforce, training you to be ready for employment as soon as you graduate. Many courses include field trips, practical sessions and work placements, giving you the chance to develop your skills and gain meaningful work experience.

Friendly environmentJCU has three campuses – in Cairns, Singapore and Townsville. All three campuses offer a friendly environment for students with many support services, social activities, sports and clubs, as well as excellent academic facilities.

The Cairns campus has more than 4,000 students and is located adjacent to rainforests of the Wet Tropics World Heritage. This campus is home to a well equipped, modern Dentistry school, as well as facilities for studying Marine and other sciences, the Environment and Sustainability, Nursing Science and a full range of other courses.

Two Singapore campuses provide students with access to facilities and services to support learning in Psychology, Business, Marketing, Information Technology, Tourism and Guidance and Counselling. Singaporean students have the

opportunity to study in Australia and Australian students are able to study in Singapore.

The Townsville campus is the University’s largest campus, with more than 13,000 students. Campus life includes 1,500 students who reside on campus, with great student amenities and sporting facilities. In Townsville, Marine Science, Creative Arts and the Health Sciences (including Veterinary Science) are flagship study areas.

Students living in remote and rural locations can study a range of programs delivered at JCU study centres in Mount Isa, Mackay and Thursday Island. Russo Higher Education operates a Brisbane campus, delivering undergraduate and postgraduate degrees to international students on behalf of JCU.

FAQsIs uni different to school?Yes, uni is very different.

As a Uni student you are expected to behave as an independent adult. You will be responsible for making decisions about attending lectures and classes. You decide what, when, where and how you study and complete assignments.

Life at uni can be a bit of a shock at first. No one checks in with you to make sure you are attending classes or studying, nor will anyone push you, or tell your parents if you don’t attend classes or hand in assignments.

This doesn’t mean you are on your own. JCU offers support and help to all students. It is up to you to take the first step and ask for assistance if you need it.

There are other differences too.

University campuses are huge when compared with schools, and initially a map comes in handy to help you find your way around. JCU offers a mobile app to guide you to just about anywhere you want to go: lecture rooms, sporting facilities, coffee shops, clubs, bookshops and libraries. And you will be with many students from all around the world.

What should I do right now?• Think about the study areas that interest

you. The subjects you get good marks for at school are an indication of where your interests lie

• Explore the study areas in this guide and consider the degrees that interest you.

• Make an appointment with your school guidance officer.

• Talk to family, friends and professionals you know about their careers and how they reached their goals.

For more information ask for a copy of the JCU Undergraduate Courses guide from your school guidance officer, call the University for a copy, or visit the website: jcu.edu.au/courses

What subjects should I choose? It is important to select the right subjects now to be accepted into the course that will lead to your chosen career. Keep this in mind when choosing subjects for Years 11 and 12.

If you change your mind during your final years and do not have the necessary subjects at the end of Year 12 for entry into the course of your choice, there are alternative pathways for acceptance to university.

You can:

• Enrol in another degree that can act as a stepping-stone. If you do well, you might be able to transfer to your first choice after one year.

• Enrol in a diploma course or Tertiary Access Course, to gain the skills and academic prerequisites for entry to many degrees.

• Enrol in JCU bridging subjects (Maths and Chemistry) if you do not have these prerequisites for your chosen degree.

• Study at a vocational college or TAFE to help you gain entry and (in some cases) credit towards your degree.

Find out more: www.jcu.edu.au/apply/pathways

What if I am not sure what career I’d like to pursue? It is a good idea to keep an open mind while you are at high school about what you want to study at university. And don’t worry if you are not sure just yet.

If you are not positive about what specific career to pursue, JCU offers general undergraduate degrees. The Bachelor degrees in Arts, Science or Social Science are flexible meaning that you can choose from a wide range of subjects to fulfill the requirements. Studying for a degree ensures you acquire skills in communication, research, analysis and problem solving, essential for success in the workforce.

Once you have graduated, you can do further study to gain specialist qualifications suitable for specific careers. For example, you can become a teacher in your chosen field of interest with a Graduate Diploma of Education.

What if I am the first in my family to go to university?University can be an intimidating place, especially if you haven’t a family member with experience to turn to for advice. JCU provides a range of academic and social services to help students transition to university from school, or from work into Uni life.

When you are considering attending university check out the services on offer.

Find out more: www.jcu.edu.au/student/support

Make friends from all over the world. At uni, you are treated as an independent adult.

I want to attend uni and I am an Indigenous Australian. The number of Australian Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islanders attending JCU is growing every year. Uni is a great pathway to a career that can change a student’s life and the lives of those in their communities.

Individual scholarships and networks are available through the University to ensure that Australian Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islanders students thrive and are supported.

Find out more: www.jcu.edu.au/austindigenousinfo

How much will Uni study cost?Fees can at first seem to be a barrier to studying a university degree, however there are ways to make these fees manageable, regardless of your financial situation.

Most students applying for Uni are eligible for Commonwealth Assistance and have the choice to defer paying fees until after they graduate and are earning a wage. As an Australian citizen or permanent humanitarian visa holder you can choose to defer the university fee payments by applying for a HECS-HELP loan from the Government. It is an interest-free loan that you pay back on a contribution scheme after your income reaches a minimum threshold set by the Government ($51,309 for the 2013/14 year).

Although, there will be additional living costs that require some planning, a university education will be one of the best financial investments of your life.

What financial help is available? The Australian Government provides financial assistance to Australian citizens through a variety of schemes. Eligibility may depend on your income, where you live and whether you study full time or part time.

Some Commonwealth Assistance Schemes include:

• Youth allowance – provides financial help for young people (18-24 years of age) who are studying full time.

• ABSTUDY – provides a living allowance and other benefits to eligible Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students, studying full or part time. Abstudy can help with education, accommodation and living costs, as well as travel fares and prescription medicines. Contact Centrelink for further information, 13 23 17.

• Centrelink Scholarships – automatically made available when receiving other assistance. They include the ‘Student Start-up Scholarship*’ that helps with upfront costs of textbooks and specialised equipment, and the ‘Relocation Scholarship’ that helps students living away from their family while studying.

• Rent Assistance, Remote Area Allowance and Fares Allowance may also be available.

Centrelink website: www.humanservices.gov.au

* The Australian Government has announced this Scholarship will be replaced by an income contingent loan. Until legislation is passed, the current scholarship applies.

JCU scholarshipsJCU offers a large range of scholarships, grants, and bursaries – some up to $5,000 a year.

This type of assistance is provided to promote academic excellence and enable students to access higher education regardless of background or financial circumstances. There are a limited number of scholarships in specific areas, and these scholarships are available through an application process.

Find out more: www.jcu.edu.au/scholarships

Where can I live when I am studying?JCU’s Cairns and Townsville campuses offer a variety of accommodation options.

In Cairns, student accommodation is adjacent to the campus and in Townsville, there are on-campus colleges. There is also share house accommodation in both cities.

Find out more: www.jcu.edu.au/accommodation

Can I study overseas? Many JCU courses offer the opportunity to study part of the course at our Singapore campus or at one of our many international partner universities.
