Phonics: this week we are thinking about the ‘ou’ family.

Literacy. This week we will be reading a poem called: ‘The rubbish tip alien.’ Ask a grown

up to help you read the poem. The words in yellow highlight our new vocabulary.

Use the pictures below to help you understand what the words mean.

The Rubbish tip alien

Sitting on the tip, quite quickly.

Choosing bit by bit, quite slickly.

Hip hop hap it’s the alien rap.

Tractor wheels for eyes, turn lazy.

Dustbin lids for ears, creak crazy.

Hip hop hap it’s the alien rap.

Freezer for a head stares coldly.

Bedspring for a tongue juts boldly.

Hip hop hap it’s the alien rap.

Car grill for a mouth turns fiery.

Hoover for a nose burns wiry.

Hip hop it’s the alien rap.

body. Using the poem I created a picture of what the aliens face might look like.

Can you spot the different parts of the poem within my picture?

Religious Education – Places of Muslim Pilgrimage

Have you ever heard of the word pilgrimage? Do you know what it means?

Talk to your family about what you understand about the term.

We are learning about a special place of pilgrimage for Muslims all over

the world and to understand why it is so sacred.

A pilgrimage is a journey to a religious place. It is different to going on

holiday. People make the journey for different reasons, perhaps because

they want to give thanks to God, ask for help or to ask for forgiveness.

The people who go on these special journeys are called ‘pilgrims’.

Muslims live by the Five Pillars of Islam which are rules to live a good

Muslim life. One of these rules is going on a pilgrimage to Makkah, or

Mecca, in Saudi Arabia.

This pilgrimage is called Hajj and all Muslims are expected to make this

special journey at least once in life as long as they can afford to and are

fit and well. Mecca is where Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) was

born, making it a very special place.

Before reaching Mecca, all pilgrims must wash and put on special clothes.

Here is a picture of travelling pilgrims wearing their special clothes.

In Mecca, there is a huge mosque called Grand Mosque. Inside the

Mosque is a stone building covered in black cloth which is seen as the

holiest palace in the world for Muslims. This is called the Kaaba and is

where Muslim’s always face when they are praying. During Hajj, a pilgrim

will walk around it seven times.

With help from your family, answer these questions

1. What is a pilgrimage?

2. Where do Muslim pilgrims journey to?

3. What is the Kaaba?

Extension - Write down 3 things that you have learnt about Hajj.
