The Brief in Detail MULTI-CHANNEL RECORDING (UNIT 9 Delivering A Music Product, Unit 25 Music Production Techniques) The aim of this project is to develop your understanding of the multi-channel recording environment. This will include identification and selection of appropriate microphones, routing of multiple signal sources, and delivering finished mixes. Importantly you will be required to organise, plan and run your own recording sessions to deliver an appropriate end result. You will undertake a variety of studio roles whilst recording a variety of material. Scenario: It is crucial producers build a portfolio of varied work, showcasing audio engineering, production and mixing capability. This will enable you to attract a wide-ranging set of clients from music production to delivering pieces for TV, film and multi-media applications. Portfolio work is also important when applying for university or work in related fields. Planning will be a key element to this project and it is therefore crucial that within each group you devise a production schedule that enables you to deliver all elements of the tasks in the required timeframe. You will be working as engineers, producers, and mixers to deliver audio productions. Written and video/screen recording content will enable you to evaluate and justify your decisions. This is crucial in achieving the highest marks.

TASKS Task 1: RECORDING Create a portfolio of recordings showcasing a variety of multi-channel recording techniques. These should include full drum kit, direct input sources (bass, and/or electric guitar). Vocals are optional. Use your template compositions. You will be required to deliver a minimum of 1 piece per group member, to be uploaded individually to your Soundcloud and Tumblr sites. (Unit 9 GC 2) (Unit 25 GC 2 & 3) UNDERTAKE MULTI CHANNEL RECORDINGS IN STUDIO 1 SESSIONS. DIRECT INPUT\SINGLE CHANNEL SOURCES CAN BE UNDERTAKEN IN PROJECT STUDIOS OR STUDIO 1 Task 2: MIXING Deliver mixes of your recordings employing appropriate techniques, including effective use of eq, reverb, compression & auxilliaries etc (Unit 9 GC 3 & 4) (Unit 25 GC 4). This will include diagrams, photos (and potentially even video) and descriptions/specifications of all relevant studio equipment (including microphones etc) and their specifications (frequency responses etc). Also include signal routing information from live room. For the purposes of guidance, I would not expect this to be less than 1500 words. Task 3: MIXING ANALYSIS Deliver a screen recording (or written piece if you prefer) explaining how you have undertaken your 2 mixes including explanations and justifications of your use of eq, compression, reverb, auxilaries.
