Megayacht owners are rarely mentioned. However, the second you step aboard Chopi Chopi, it becomes impossible not to think or indeed talk about them as every inch of this
extraordinary 80-metre is the product of her owners’ sophisticated good taste and their idea of how travel and luxury should be. The stunning style aboard is also a tribute to the splendid relationship they built up with the team that created this yachting masterpiece. A team made up of Studio Zuccon International Project, which penned the exterior lines, Laura Sessa Architects, which did the concept and translated the owners’ lifestyle into yachting form, and CRN, one of the finest exponents of Italian style in the world. “2013 was a highly significant year in the history of CRN,” says Lamberto Tacoli, Chairman and CEO of CRN. “Firstly, the yard celebrated its first 50 years and secondly because we delivered Chopi Chopi, which, at 80 metres, was our new flagship, as well as the 60-metre J’Ade, both unveiled at the last Monaco show. both were important milestones for CRN: they provide ample testimony to the solidity of a yard that mixes tradition and innovation with an eye constantly on the future, in fact.” As one of the 100 largest yachts in the world, Chopi Chopi is most certainly one of the leading ambassadors for Made in Italy excellence abroad. “I like to emphasis the fact that Chopi Chopi was entirely built by CRN at its
Ancona yard plus she was designed by two Italian studios,” continues Tacoli. built from steel and aluminium, Chopi Chopi is a five-decker with an additional sub lower deck for her technical areas. She has a beam of 13.5 metres and her 12 guests will be cared for by 31 crew and will be accommodated in six VIP suites which are in addition to the owner’s suite. “Chopi Chopi was conceived principally as a family home,” says Tacoli. “And the yard translated the client’s desires in that regard into reality. That was the real challenge for us and one that we rose to.” The result is a yacht that genuinely is a bespoke creation. While Chopi Chopi has a strikingly streamlined exterior with soft lines and large yet harmonious volumes, inside she is the perfect melding of classic and contemporary, elegance and sophistication. Luxury woods, marble, lea-ther and metals match beautifully with custom furnishings and designer pieces. Huge attention has been lavished on guests who are welcomed aboard either through the beach area or the cockpit on the main deck. The living area is a triumph of effortless elegance too. Flooded with light from its wonderful windows, it is very generous inside with the sculptu-ral lamps by Alberto Pinto for Cercle Rouge, four Eero Saarinen chairs and four custom sofas arranged symmetrically. There is also a large staircase that provides direct access from the saloon on the main deck to the
Perché, dimensioni dello yacht a parte, qualsiasi cosa
capolavoro composto dallo Studio Zuccon International
insieme a J’Ade di 60 m, ambedue presentate all’ultimo
architettura italiani».
Grande
attenzione è posta all’ospite che viene accolto a bordo o

fitness and wellness area aft on the lower deck. This is an extremely in-novative design solution by CRN. Amidships we find a lobby with a cir-cular lift and spiral stairs. It also leads to the six VIP suites in the forward sleeping area. Each one of the suites has a bright, lively colour scheme as well as a combination of dark stained and natural maple wood. The curtains are by Loro Piana and Pierre Frey while the lamps are by Hervé Van der Straaten again with carpets by Tai Ping. The first of the VIP state-rooms and the business room have fold-out terraces that provide stun-ning views of the sea. The full-beam silver cabin, however, has a balcony complete with coffee table and chairs that can even be used underway. The upper deck is devoted to social activities. It begins aft with a large cockpit with two round tables that can join together to create one large oval table seating up to 20 people. Moving forward, there is the family saloon which has large sofas, a giant 103-inch plasma TV screen and ga-mes table. It continues forward with a large dining room complete with

progettuale, questa, estremamente innovativa per Crn.

two windows that can be opened fully. The owner’s deck is vast – 240 square metres in total – and includes an al fresco cockpit, a guest cabin in addition to the master itself, a TV room and a beauty area. The semi-circular owners’ suite itself is foremost with fantastic views of the sea. It even has its own al fresco lounge area with spa pool and sun pad. Here too the colour scheme is quite unusual with pickled oak combined with gleaming bright white and indigo accents in the curtains and cushions. Clearly, there are also plenty of al fresco areas for guests too including the sundeck (reachable only by lift), a 90-square-metre oasis with a dining room aft and sunning area forward with Jacuzzi and sun pad. And that is without even mentioning the sea-skimming beach club which is a real haven, particularly in the area which links the swimming and wellness sec-tions. Inside is a spa and a gym kitted out with Technogym machines. This is an area which together with the balco-nies, the al fresco terraces and the cir-cular pilothouse, best symbolises the wonderfully innovative approach of the Ancona yard and its constant focus on research. “Which gives us all here at CRN great satisfaction,” concludes Lam-berto Tacoli. •
All’interno infatti si trovano
aptico), rappresentano soluzioni innovative, simboli
Crn», conclude Lamberto Tacoli. •

i have a very close relationship with chopi chopi’s owners. We first met regarding the interiors of their first boat Lady nag nag, a 52.3-metre built in holland in 2008. they liked the yacht very, very much and that opened
the door for me to this special family. i think they saw i was the right person to interpret their lifestyle. i have also worked on other residential projects for them. these owners are genuinely special people: very straightforward but one of the most extraordinary things about them is that they want to embrace all these projects as a family. their yachts and homes aren’t for the sake of appearances. they mainly want them so that they can spend time together in them and aboard them. so the primary brief was to design the yacht for all the members of the family, children and grandchildren inclu-ded. that meant it had to be warm, cosy and relaxing. the dimensions had to be a lot larger than those of the previous yacht to allow the extended family be together aboard at the same time. however, that side of things didn’t really scare me as i had worked on private ships in the past in which

spaventata: avevo già lavorato in passato su navi private,
“They wanTed a warm and relaxing yachT, large enough To welcome children and grandchildren” «voLevano uno yacht accogLiente e riLassante. e doveva essere grande per accogLiere figLi e nipoti»
they were very many different spaces that needed to be harmonised. on a yacht of 80 metres with an interior floor area of over 1,000 square metres, materials were what connected the various decks. the choice fell on oak, an incredible wood and a real favourite of the owners. We started from the owners’ deck where we used sanded oak. from there going down the stairs to all the other decks, we tried to use materials and details that inter-linked with each other perfectly, creating a kind of leitmotif in all the various spaces, both in the main ones where the family gathers and in the more personal ones. that’s why the blue, purple and orange cabins on the main deck are not really connected to the main saloon. they were purposely left free-stan-ding and the colour palettes were chosen by the various members of the family. the corridor is hung with portraits of the gran-dchildren done in the style of andy Warhol prints with the colours borrowed from and introducing the individual cabins. the salo-on, however, is like a stage set because of its vast, light space. it provides a very ele-gant welcome for guests coming aboard. the owners’ deck too is an extraordinary place: the cabin forward is large and bright with a lovely curved window that opens up the whole view outside and onto the outdoor area directly in front of it. the latter is the perfect place for breakfast and the lady owner loves spending time there with her grandchildren. there’s also an aft terra-ce on the owners’ deck furnished with sun loungers and sofas. i always try to provide an elegant translation of my clients’ desires
personalmente, spesso scendendo a compromessi

and do all that i can to accommodate even solutions and choices that i might not have made personally. i slightly reduced the amount of space given over to the saloons to create closets for the table services and to faci-litate the crew in their work. that is something i worked on with the owner. i brought him renderings and mock-us of the various proposals. but i think that watercolours are very important in communicating emotions so we al-ways do paintings of each space to give a precise idea of how the yacht will be. this underscores the empathic value. We used renderings, howe-ver, to show where the various objets d’art and paintings are located as they
are in various areas to avoid making the yacht feel like a museum. before we delivered chopi chopi, we asked the owner to give us some books and artworks. When the owner to come aboard to find the yacht completely finished and featuring so many things from his everyday life, it was a huge shock. it was a truly fantastic moment for me as a designer. very satisfying. chopi chopi might be a sort of arrival point for any other designer but for me, she’s really a starting point. i’m particularly proud of her as she really is the owners’ desires turned into reality: an oasis of peace and serenity for their family. •
sono state distribuite in varie e differenti zone, proprio

clearly, I’m very proud of chopi chopi. Hers is a design that crn, the yard with which we took this leap forward into very large steel yachts, has skilfully translated into a successful build that
will make a significant contribution to Italian exports. she is the largest pleasure yacht Zuccon International project has ever designed and has opened up a whole new phase in our career, paving the way for these bigger new craft. We poured over 40 years experience of design and engineering in the construction process into her but she was so large that creating her threatened the delicate balance between history and innovation that really does always need to be struck every time you de-sign a new craft. chopi chopi is a custom design and everything in her is there in response to the owners’ often technologically unpreceden-ted requests. However, at the same time we also created a design that allowed the yard to embark on a build that held no technical surprises, so there were no blurry areas about cost. We also managed to push for-

approssimazione sui costi, e siamo riusciti a perseguire
proprio nell’innovazione trova i migliori stimoli, però
quadrati e grandi terrazze sugli affacci verso poppa e
ward and update our own stylistic inspiration in a correct fashion. the-re is an artistic and technical language that takes its best stimulus from innovation but artistic excitement can overwhelm if it is not anchored in solid construction experience with all the materials required, from fibreglass to alloys and steel. In the end, the yard’s dna has to come to the fore, sending out a message that, as the yacht sails the seven seas, it will act as the best possible advertisement for both it and the designer because Italian style, if backed up by excellent construction, remains the best in the world, despite all the imitators. However, style alone is not enough. the market is constantly evolving and for quite some time now has been demanding room for sociali-
sing not only in the owner’s and guest quarters but also those of the crew. this has changed the work of the designer somewhat as we have had to absorb this new cultural demand into our artistic language. It’s a huge departure from the past and influences all the interior arrange-ments. there is a risk that the designer could lose the clarity of his or her personal stamp. While once upon a time, the crew quarters were much pokier, now owners are competing with each other to make them as large and as comfortable as possible with privacy in mind too. the crew area for more than 30 people aboard chopi chopi is on the lower deck but there are also other working areas on the other decks, including the sundeck, and these required meticulous harmonisation. this translated

navigazione e nelle manovre d’ormeggio.
dettaglio linguistico a piccola scala, espressione
into a large lobby with stairs and lift that really does act as a kind of glue between the various onboard activities. but the crew’s well-being need have no negative impact on that of the owner and his guests. the guests get the best of the best, in fact. With chopi chopi, the owner asked for an entire deck all to himself – a total of 240 square metres with large terraces looking forward and aft and equipped with a hydromassage tub and relaxation areas. for the guests, there is a gym and beach club aft of the engine room with direct access to the sea while the sundeck also has a pool with a large sun pad area and a wet bar. the whole of the upper deck is devoted to socialising between guests and owner. the large windows in both the guest suites and living area open or slide where possible to respect man’s connec-tion to the sea and foster it at all times. one salient detail in the layout is
the bridge which is extremely professional and reminiscent of a cruise ship. for the first time in crn’s history as a builder, it has a circular front to provide more extensive views underway and when docking. to conclude, we managed to create a yacht that will stand the test of time because of the balance between her linguistic and volumetric sy-stems even though she is still very modern in terms of her ergonomics and functionality. It’s very much a synthesis and evolution of what crn is all about. We wanted to add a small linguistic detail, into something lar-ge scale and the owner’s satisfaction and the comments from the sector prove that we have succeeded. It was also a very fruitful project that opens Zuccon’s future up to de-signing increasingly large yachts. experience tells me too that they will appeal greatly to owners of a certain character the world over. •
