Safe riding● Always make pre-operation

checks. Careful checks may helpprevent an accident.

● This scooter is designed to carrythe operator and passenger.

● The failure of motorists to detectand recognize scooters in trafficis the predominating cause ofautomobile/scooter accidents.Many accidents have been cau-sed by an automobile driver whodid not see the scooter. Makingyourself conspicuous appears tobe very effective in reducing thechance of this type of accident.Therefore:• Wear a brightly colored jacket.• Use extra caution when appro-

aching and passing throughintersections, since intersec-tions are the most likely placesfor scooter accidents to occur.

• Ride where other motorists cansee you. Avoid riding in anot-her motorist’s blind spot.

● Many accidents involve inexpe-rienced operators. In fact, manyoperators who have been invol-

ved in accidents do not evenhave a current driver’s license.• Make sure that you are quali-

fied and that you only lend yourscooter to other qualified ope-rators.

• Know your skills and limits.Staying within your limits mayhelp you to avoid an accident.

• We recommend that you prac-tice riding your scooter wherethere is no traffic until you havebecome thoroughly familiarwith the scooter and all of itscontrols.

● Many accidents have been cau-sed by error of the scooter ope-rator. A typical error made by theoperator is veering wide on a turndue to EXCESSIVE SPEED orundercornering (insufficient leanangle for the speed).• Always obey the speed limit

and never travel faster thanwarranted by road and trafficconditions.

• Always signal before turning orchanging lanes. Make sure thatother motorists can see you.

● The posture of the operator andpassenger is important for propercontrol.• The operator should keep both

hands on the handlebar andboth feet on the footboardduring operation to maintaincontrol of the scooter.

• The passenger should alwayshold onto the operator, the seatstrap or grab bar, if equipped,with both hands and keep bothfeet on the passenger foo-trests.

• Never carry a passengerunless he or she can firmly pla-ce both feet on the passengerfootrests.

● Never ride under the influence ofalcohol or other drugs.

● This scooter is designed for on-road use only. It is not suitable foroff-road use.

Protective apparelThe majority of fatalities from scooteraccidents are the result of head inju-ries. The use of a safety helmet is thesingle most critical factor in the pre-vention or reduction of head injuries.

● Always wear an approved hel-met.

● Wear a face shield or goggles.Wind in your unprotected eyescould contribute to an impair-ment of vision which could delayseeing a hazard.

● The use of a jacket, substantialshoes, trousers, gloves, etc., iseffective in preventing or redu-cing abrasions or lacerations.

● Never wear loose-fitting clothes,otherwise they could catch onthe control levers or wheels andcause injury or an accident.

● Never touch the engine orexhaust system during or afteroperation. They become very hotand can cause burns. Alwayswear protective clothing thatcovers your legs, ankles, andfeet.

● Passengers should also observethe above precautions.

ModificationsModifications made to this scooternot approved by Yamaha, or theremoval of original equipment, mayrender the scooter unsafe for use and

may cause severe personal injury.Modifications may also make yourscooter illegal to use.Loading and accessoriesAdding accessories or cargo to yourscooter can adversely affect stabilityand handling if the weight distributionof the scooter is changed. To avoidthe possibility of an accident, useextreme caution when adding cargoor accessories to your scooter. Useextra care when riding a scooter thathas added cargo or accessories. Hereare some general guidelines to followif loading cargo or adding accessoriesto your scooter:LoadingThe total weight of the operator, pas-senger, accessories and cargo mustnot exceed the maximum load limit.

When loading within this weight limit,keep the following in mind:

● Cargo and accessory weightshould be kept as low and closeto the scooter as possible. Make

sure to distribute the weight asevenly as possible on both sidesof the scooter to minimize imba-lance or instability.

● Shifting weights can create asudden imbalance. Make surethat accessories and cargo aresecurely attached to the scooterbefore riding. Check accessorymounts and cargo restraints fre-quently.

● Never attach any large or heavyitems to the handlebar, front fork,or front fender. Such items cancreate unstable handling or aslow steering response.

AccessoriesGenuine Yamaha accessories havebeen specifically designed for use onthis scooter. Since Yamaha cannottest all other accessories that may beavailable, you must personally be res-ponsible for the proper selection, ins-tallation and use of non-Yamahaaccessories. Use extreme cautionwhen selecting and installing anyaccessories.

Keep the following guidelines in mind,as well as those provided under “Loa-ding” when mounting accessories.

● Never install accessories or carrycargo that would impair the per-formance of your scooter. Care-fully inspect the accessory befo-re using it to make sure that itdoes not in any way reduceground clearance or corneringclearance, limit suspension tra-vel, steering travel or control ope-ration, or obscure lights or reflec-tors.• Accessories fitted to the hand-

lebar or the front fork area cancreate instability due to impro-per weight distribution oraerodynamic changes. Ifaccessories are added to thehandlebar or front fork area,they must be as lightweight aspossible and should be kept toa minimum.

• Bulky or large accessories mayseriously affect the stability ofthe scooter due to aerodyna-mic effects. Wind may attemptto lift the scooter, or the scoo-

ter may become unstable incross winds. These accesso-ries may also cause instabilitywhen passing or being passedby large vehicles.

• Certain accessories can dis-place the operator from his orher normal riding position. Thisimproper position limits the fre-edom of movement of the ope-rator and may limit control abi-lity, therefore, suchaccessories are not recom-mended.

● Use caution when adding electri-cal accessories. If electricalaccessories exceed the capacityof the scooter’s electrical systeman electric failure could result,which could cause a dangerousloss of lights or engine power.

Gasoline and exhaust gas● GASOLINE IS HIGHLY FLAMMA-

BLE:• Always turn the engine off

when refueling.• Take care not to spill any gaso-

line on the engine or exhaustsystem when refueling.

• Never refuel while smoking orin the vicinity of an open flame.

● Never start the engine or let it runfor any length of time in a closedarea. The exhaust fumes are poi-sonous and may cause loss ofconsciousness and death withina short time. Always operate yourscooter in an area that has ade-quate ventilation.

● Always turn the engine off beforeleaving the scooter unattendedand remove the key from themain switch. When parking thescooter, note the following:• The engine and exhaust sys-

tem may be hot, therefore,park the scooter in a placewhere pedestrians or childrenare not likely to touch these hotareas.

• Do not park the scooter on aslope or soft ground, otherwiseit may fall over.

• Do not park the scooter near aflammable source (e.g., a kero-sene heater, or near an openflame), otherwise it could catchfire.

● If you should swallow any gasoli-ne, inhale a lot of gasoline vapor,or allow gasoline to get into youreyes, see your doctor immedia-tely. If any gasoline spills on yourskin or clothing, immediatelywash the affected area with soapand water and change your clot-hes.

Further safe-riding points● Be sure to signal clearly when

making turns.● Braking can be extremely difficult

on a wet road. Avoid hard bra-king, because the scooter couldslide. Apply the brakes slowlywhen stopping on a wet surface.

● Slow down as you approach acorner or turn. Once you havecompleted a turn, accelerateslowly.

● Be careful when passing parkedcars. A driver might not see youand open a door in your path.

● Railroad crossings, streetcarrails, iron plates on road cons-truction sites, and manhole

covers become extremely slip-pery when wet. Slow down andcross them with caution. Keepthe scooter upright, otherwise itcould slide out from under you.

● The brake pads could get wetwhen you wash the scooter. Afterwashing the scooter, check thebrakes before riding.

● Always wear a helmet, gloves,trousers (tapered around the cuffand ankle so they do not flap),and a bright colored jacket.

● Do not carry too much luggageon the scooter. An overloadedscooter is unstable.

Main switch/steering lock

The main switch/steering lock controlsthe ignition and lighting systems, andis used to lock the steering. Thevarious positions are described below.

ON “f”All electrical circuits are supplied withpower; the meter lighting, taillight,license plate light and auxiliary lightscome on, and the engine can be star-ted. The key cannot be removed.

NOTE:The headlights come on automaticallywhen the engine is started and stayon until the key is turned to "OFF" orthe sidestand is moved down.

Pushing the “TRIP” button switchesthe display between the odometermode “ODO” and the tripmeter mode“TRIP”. To reset the tripmeter, enterthe “TRIP” mode, and then hold downthe “TRIP” button for at least onesecond. The tripmeter can be usedtogether with the fuel gauge to esti-mate the distance that can be trave-led with a full tank of fuel. This infor-mation will enable you to plan futurefuel stops.Setting the odometer/tripmeterreading modeThe odometer and tripmeter can beset to count in either kilometers ormiles according to the following pro-cedure.

1. Turn the key to “f” while pres-sing the reset button.

2. Release the reset button whenthe display comes on.

3. The current mode appears in thedisplay: “CONT” (continental) forthe kilometer mode and “EnGL”(English) for the mile mode.

4. Press the reset button to switchthe mode.

5. Press the reset button for twoseconds to confirm the setting.

NOTE:● The odometer/tripmeter reading

mode can be changed any num-ber of times while the odometerreading is below 10 (km/h orMPH), but it cannot be changedanymore after the reading hasreached 10 (km/h or MPH).

● Switching between the kilometermode and the mile mode doesnot change or convert the currentodometer/tripmeter reading.

Battery voltage/fuel gauge

When the key is turned to “e”, thevoltage/fuel gauge indicates the bat-tery voltage.

NOTE:If the battery voltage drops to 10 V,have a Yamaha dealer check the bat-tery.

When the key is turned to “f”, thevoltage/fuel gauge indicates theamount of fuel in the fuel tank afterindicating the battery voltage for twoseconds. The needle moves towards“E” (empty) as the fuel level decrea-

ses. When the needle reaches “E”,refuel as soon as possible.

NOTE:Do not allow the fuel tank to emptyitself completely.

To open the fuel tank cap

1. Fuel tank cap

1. Open the fuel tank cap cover bypushing in on the rear end of it.

2. Insert the key in the lock and turnit clockwise.

To close the fuel tank cap1. Align the match marks, and then

push the fuel tank cap into theoriginal position.

2. Turn the key counterclockwiseand remove it.

3. Close the fuel tank cover.

ss WARNING● Do not remove the radiator cap when the engine and radiator are hot. Scalding hot fluid and steam may be

blown out under pressure, which could cause serious injury. Be sure to wait until the engine has cooled.● After removing the radiator cap retaining bolt, place a thick rag, like a towel, over the radiator cap, and then

slowly rotate the cap counterclockwise to the detent to allow any residual pressure to escape. When the his-sing sound has stopped, press down on the cap while turning it counterclockwise, and then remove the cap.

Wait until theengine has cooled.

Check the coolant level in thereservoir and radiator.

3. Remove extremely stubborn dirt,like oil burnt onto the crankcase,with a degreasing agent and abrush, but never apply such pro-

ducts onto seals, gaskets andwheel axles. Always rinse the dirtand degreaser off with water.

el cleaners, especially on spo-ked wheels. If such productsare used on hard-to-removedirt, do not leave the cleaner onthe affected area any longerthan instructed. Also, tho-roughly rinse the area off withwater, immediately dry it, andthen apply a corrosion protec-tion spray.

● Improper cleaning can damagewindshields, cowlings, panelsand other plastic parts. Useonly a soft, clean cloth or spon-ge with mild detergent andwater to clean plastic.

● Do not use any harsh chemicalproducts on plastic parts. Besure to avoid using cloths orsponges which have been incontact with strong or abrasivecleaning products, solvent or

● Do not use high-pressure was-hers or steam-jet cleaners sin-ce they cause water seepageand deterioration in the follo-wing areas: seals (of wheel andswingarm bearings, fork andbrakes), electric components(couplers, connectors, instru-ments, switches and lights),breather hoses and vents.

● For scooters equipped with awindshield: Do not use strongcleaners or hard sponges asthey will cause dulling or scrat-ching. Some cleaning com-pounds for plastic may leavescratches on the windshield.Test the product on a small hid-den part of the windshield tomake sure that it does not lea-ve any marks. If the windshieldis scratched, use a qualityplastic polishing compoundafter washing.

After normal useRemove dirt with warm water, a milddetergent, and a soft, clean sponge,and then rinse thoroughly with cleanwater. Use a toothbrush or bottle-brush for hard-to-reach areas. Stub-born dirt and insects will come offmore easily if the area is covered witha wet cloth for a few minutes beforecleaning.After riding in the rain, near the sea oron salt-sprayed roadsSince sea salt or salt sprayed on theroads during winter are extremelycorrosive in combination with water,carry out the following steps aftereach ride in the rain, near the sea oron salt-sprayed roads.

NOTE:Salt sprayed on roads in the wintermay remain well into spring.

1. Clean the scooter with cold waterand a mild detergent after theengine has cooled down.

3. Fill up the fuel tank and add fuelstabilizer (if available) to preventthe fuel tank from rusting and thefuel from deteriorating.

4. Perform the following steps toprotect the cylinder, piston rings,etc. from corrosion.

a. Remove the spark plug cap andspark plug.

b. Pour a teaspoonful of engine oilinto the spark plug bore.

c. Install the spark plug cap ontothe spark plug, and then placethe spark plug on the cylinderhead so that the electrodes aregrounded. (This will limit sparkingduring the next step.)

d. Turn the engine over severaltimes with the starter. (This willcoat the cylinder wall with oil.)

e. Remove the spark plug cap fromthe spark plug, and then installthe spark plug and the spark plugcap.

ss WARNINGTo prevent damage or injury fromsparking, make sure to ground thespark plug electrodes while turningthe engine over.

5. Lubricate all control cables andthe pivoting points of all leversand pedals as well as of thesidestand/centerstand.

6. Check and, if necessary, correctthe tire air pressure, and then liftthe scooter so that both of itswheels are off the ground. Alter-natively, turn the wheels a littleevery month in order to preventthe tires from becoming degra-ded in one spot.

7. Cover the muffler outlet with aplastic bag to prevent moisturefrom entering it.

8. Remove the battery and fullycharge it. Store it in a cool, dryplace and charge it once amonth. Do not store the battery inan excessively cold or warm pla-ce [less than 0 °C (30 °F) or morethan 30 °C (90 °F)]. For more

information on storing the bat-tery, see page 6-24.

NOTE:Make any necessary repairs beforestoring the scooter.
