Foreword of this Issue
Yazid ZahdaYes Theatre Chairman
One year ends and another begins. It
feels that Yes Theatre was established
just yesterday. By the end of 2012, Yes
Theatre will celebrate the end of five
years of work and accomplishments.
In 2008, the play In the Place was
produced based on Samuel Beckett
novel Waiting for Godot. This novel
was chosen because it fits the reality of
Palestinians, the reality of waiting.
The war on Gaza started in 2009. Yes
Theatre wanted to dedicate a play to
the people in Gaza. Therefore, a play
called Untitled was produced based onthe story of Guernica. The play talked
about the humanity of the suppressed
Palestinians in Gaza. In addition, Yes
Theatre produced the play Gaza-Hebron-
Gaza. It was based on the monologues
of children who witnessed the war on
Gaza. The Same Problem was produced
in 2010 . The play depicted the social
political situation in Palestine in aTheatre
had the chance to produce a play
based on the theatre of the oppressed.
The play was called Abu Raad. It
discussed some common problems in
the Palestinian society such as school
dropouts, child labor, and early marriage.
The audience really liked Abu Raad as
it was very interesting and interactive.
What made it even more special is that it
had three actresses from Hebron. It was
the first time for girls from Hebron to act
in a play. In 2012,Yes Theatre produced
3 in 1 play that was based on the
improvisations of the actors. In this play,
the actors Raed Shyoukhi, Mohammad
Titi, and Ihab Zahda talked about their
personal life. They viewed the suffering of
the Palestinian actors in Hebron through
their personal experiences.
Yes Theatre also produced fifteen
Kids4Kids plays. The plays were
performed for school students who also
had the chance to act in them. These
Kids4Kids plays are: Letters, A Journey in
the Sun, The Other Side, Reems Dreams,
Stories, The Yard, The Stone Cutter, The
Treasure, The Match Seller, He Said
Yes, Who is the Rich, In the Village, King
Saman, and Zenas Story.
The youth had the lions share of Yes
Theatre programs. Yes Theatre carried
out Yes4Youth training program in
the years 2010, 2011, and 2012. In
this program about forty teachers and
drama animators were trained on
drama techniques, storytelling, acting,
and puppet making. It was agreed with
WFD to continue with the fourth year of
Yes4Youth in 2013.
In addition, Yes Theatre focused more
on teachers in Yes4Future program.
Eight groups of teachers from all the
Directorates of Education in Hebron have
been trained for nine months on using
drama as a tool to deal with students
inside the classrooms. The program will
be extended for another two years.
In the past years, Yes Theatre did not
only cooperate with governmental
schools but also with UNRWA schools. It
implemented a project in partnership with
Ashtar Theatre/Ramallah. The project
targeted UNRWA teachers in Hebron and
Bethlehem. The teachers were trained
on using drama techniques, games, andacting so that they can establish theatre
clubs in their schools.
Many workshops were carried out in Yes
Theatre and in other places. Moreover,
Yes Theatre participated in many
meetings and performed some plays
inside and outside Palestine such as in
Algeria, France, Germany, and Sweden.
Moreover, several performances were
hosted in YT in the past years.
Now, Yes Theatre is looking forward to
the new year to continue with the activities
and accomplishments. The staff members
are full of energy and enthusiasm and
they always strive for the best.

The Word of the Editor
Raed Shyoukhi
I dont know what to say in thefifth
anniversary of Yes Theatre. It is a dream
that came true. The theatre world is very
beautiful and unique. It has become an
integral part of my life.
I am now addicted to the theatre. I love
spending my time in it. I feel very happy
when I am in the theatre. It is my passion.
When all my friends left me , I found
consolation in the theatre. It has become
my loyal friend. I found support and
encouragement in the theatre. Theatre
never gets bored of me. In addition,
everything in it attracts me. Furthermore,
it supports my ambition and that of the
others. In theatre, you experience love,
hatred, laughter, sadness, anger, fear,
doubt, hope, and despair. Theatre never
hurts you and never lets you down. It
does not envy nor insults you. Theatre
loves you for who you are.
I truly love Yes Theatre. I love it because
it is the friend that I count on. I feel that
I belong to everything in it. I belong to
its wooden floor, black walls, lights, and
seats. How can I ever forget Yes Theatre?
I hope that Yes Theatre will always be
there for me. I hope it will always be my
refuge and shield.
YES4Youth MilestonesThe cooperation between YES
theatre and WFD is lasting over
three years now and there were
some important milestones that
have been created together:
Three training cycles for young
theater animators have been
completed, a theatre library has
been established and different
Yella Masrah-Newsletters were published in the project
framework. Several Kids4Kids-plays were produced with the
assistance of the YES4Youth participants; several of them have
acted on stage themselves.
Especially interesting in this years training cycle was the
drama therapy workshop with a trainer from overseas who lives
and works in India and comes to Palestine every year to work in
organizations and communities. A special shadow theatre was
created in that framework.
The puppet theatre workshop was, as last year, carried out with
the support of Al-Hakawati Theatre from Jerusalem. The trainer
works with huge foam puppets that are built by the trainees
under his guidance.
By the end of this year, WFD is planning to second a German
puppet player to YES theatre for a period of four months. She will
live and work in Hebron and will exclusively come to support
YES theatre to set up a puppet theatre section and to train the
YES4Youth participants in this special field.
Hopefully we will see soon witness the YES Puppet Theatre
open its doors.
We are all looking forward to it and hope that we can accompany
YES Theatre with its next milestones in the coming years.

3 in 1Shame on you, son. Do you call this
work? It is only a temporary trend that will
disappear soon. Youd better find another
job. Are not you ashamed of yourself?
You are wearing women clothes and
putting on makeup. You brought shame
and disgrace on Palestinians. Why
cannot I love a girl from Gaza? Why is
this country getting bigger? Why is thedream getting smaller? Why, why and
why?
I hear these sentences a lot. They keep
echoing in my head. They are all related
to the theme of the play To be an actor
in a city like Hebron. I ask myself, why?
Why why? Why is it so strange to be an
actor in Hebron? Why is it strange to be a
singer in Hebron? Why is it strange to be
a painter in Hebron? Why? Many artists
said great things about the city.
On the stage of Yes Theatre I watchedone of the most beautiful and sincere
performances that I have ever been to in
Palestine. 3 in 1 is a play performed by
three theatre pioneers in Hebron Raed
Shyoukhi, Mohammad Titi, and Ihab
Zahda. The play does not talk about
imaginary characters nor about people
that the actors met in their life. This play
talks about themselves. It talks about
Raed who has an annoying neighbor
that always sticks his nose where it does
not belong. Raed feels that people envy
him but he does not know why. The play
also talks about Titi who cannot feel
comfortable in his own house. He feels
that he is being watched by the people
around him. They all misunderstand
him. Ihab cannot grow his hair long, he
cannot wear whatever he likes or travel
whenever he wants. He feels that his
space is getting smaller day by day.
The script, movement, sound and lighting
were amazing. In addition, the transition
from one scene to another was smoothand easy. Thus, the ideas were well
connected and the continuity remained
unbroken. This made the work very
unique.
Such works though controversial are
highly respected and appreciated.
Furthermore, Yes Theatres efforts in
enhancing the role of theatre in the
Palestinian society are encouraged. Hats
off to the devotion and sincerity of Yes
Theatre. Yes Theatre has always been
keen on the quality of the performances
presented for the audience.
Yes Theatre should continue in producing
creative plays such as 3 in 1. Beautiful
art should always be supported because
it changes the society for the better. It
also helps in improving the artistic taste
of the audience.

Hamlet & RichardArticles
Last week and in less than 48 hours I watched two plays for William Shakespeare atAl Kasaba theatre. Richard II was performed in Arabic language while Hamlet was in
German. Yes, Shakespeare was brought to life in an extraordinary way on the stage of
Al Kasaba. The British themselves would be really impressed by the work done in the
two plays.
Hamlet, Prince of Denmark is a tragedy by William Shakespeare. Set in the Kingdom of
Denmark, the play dramatizes the revenge Prince Hamlet exacts on his uncle Claudius
for murdering King Hamlet, Claudiuss brother and Prince Hamlets father. The dramatic
events in the play raised many questions in my mind. How many people do we have
like Hamlet in the Palestinian society? Does the Palestinian society have someone like
Claudius, the King of Denmark? Yes, there are people like him. What about Gertrude, the
Queen of Denmark and Hamlets mother? Oh yes, there are many women like her. What
about Ophelia, Hamlets lover and the daughter of Polonius? Lord! They are everywhere.
The Palestinian organizations also have many men like Polonius, the Lord of Chamberlain.
What about Horatio, Hamlets friend? How many friends like Horatio are out there? In
the play, the hero is not Hamlet. It is the madness of Hamlet. Hamlets madness is dark
and creative. He knew how to avenge his fathers death. Hamlet was insane. He did not
allow the social norms and traditions to chain him. He rebelled against the reality with
madness. His madness had a purpose. Everyone died. Is this the price of truth? Hamlet
paid for it. Why not to pay for it? He is the one who wanted to revenge. Is revenge related
to Hamlets famous soliloquy To be or not to be?
The Germans in Hamlet used madness to rebel against the script. Hamlets madness was
doubled. It was a play within a play.
The Palestinian Richard, I mean Richard II was a remarkable performance. Thank you
Ashtar Theatre and all respect to the actors three generations of actors, to the creative
staff, and to the Irish director Conall Morrison. You chose well. Although this play was
written in 1595, it really fits the Arabs reality these days. It talks about the reality of
Egyptians, Libyans, Syrians, and Tunisians . It does not exclude anyone. It definitely talks
about Palestinians.
The history of Britain is reborn in the Arab world. How can we get rid of you? Who are you?
Yes, Richard is right Power corrupts and absolute power corrupts absolutely. This can
work a couple of times in schemes and plots? Then what?
It is not easy to prepare two performances for Shakespeare in less than 48 hours. There
are many ideas that started to emerge in our present based on the British history. We
hope that our future will be like Britains present . Unfortunately, this is far from reality.
We should first know ourselves before being part of a play.

From Here and ThereSilence and Talking
Silence is more difficult than talking. It is hard to explain silence.
It can be the best answer for some questions. It was said thatsilence is a great answer which cannot be mastered by many.
The Prophet (PBUH) said, Whoever believes in Allah and the
Last Day should speak good or be silent. Ali Ben Abi Taleb
said Perfecting ones intellect causes one to speak less, those
words spoken will be adorned with wisdom. He also also said
Silence will create respect and dignity. Furthermore, Amr ibn
Al Aas said Words are like medicine. Little is enough and too
much destroys you. Luqman said to his son O my son! I have
never regretted because of keeping silent. If words are silver,
silence is golden.
Wahb Ibn Al Ward said Wisdom is made up of ten partsnine
of which are silence, and the tenth is brevity of language. Imam
Al Shafi said If a person wants to speak, he should think first, if
what he says implies a benefit, he may speak. If he doubts that
what he says does not imply a benefit, he should refrain from
speaking until he is sure.
William Hazlitt said Silence is one great art of conversation.
Glasgow said Sometimes we need to be silent so that others
can hear us Christopher Marlowe said There is only one rule
for being a good talker, learn to listen. Anis Mansour said
Reading is the art of listening . He also said Music, ballet,
and galleries are arts of silence. You watch and do not speak.
They are the best examples of silence and meditation. AhmadTaymor said Silence is richer than talk, we speak when we
cannot bear being silent anymore.
Imam al-Shafii said:
They said, Youve been disputed but yet you keep silent?
I said, Indeed a response will only be a key to the doors of evil
Remaining silent from an ignorant one is indeed a virtue
And in it is also reform and protection of honor
Do you not see how the lion is feared, although he is silent?
And yet dogs are disgraced, but by God do they bark.

He is very happy when he holds it between his fingers. He is
filled with ecstasy when he kisses it. He misses it and feels
happy when he has it. It identifies his friends and the places
where he dwells . He could do anything for it. Above all, he could
die because of it. It is the cigarette.
The cigarette consists of several components that reach up
to more than 200 compound. The most harmful, and the most
threatening is nicotine, where there is about 0.1:2 mg per
cigarette. Nicotine affects the tissues of the body. One gram of it
is enough to kill ten large-sized dogs at once. A cubic centimeter
injection of nicotine is sufficient to kill a strong stallion in a few
moments. In addition, fifty milligrams of Nicotine can kill a
human if injected intravenously.
Smoking can lead to committing crimes. In Islam, smoking is
forbidden. God Almighty says (He enjoins on them good and
forbids them evil, and makes lawful for them the good things
and forbids them the bad) (Surat Al-Arf 7:157)
Furthermore, smoking has a number of well-known health effects.
It leads to weakness in progeny and in the immunity system. It
causes different types of cancer such as skin cancer, lungs and
larynx cancer. It also increases stroke and heart diseases risk.
It leads to tuberculosis. Moreover, smokers have a higher risk
of developing certain respiratory diseases like emphysema and
chronic bronchitis over time. It is worth mentioning that phlegm
caused by smoking complicates these problems. It also causes
breathing problems. Nor kill yourselves: for verily Allah hath
been to you most merciful.( Surat An-Nis 4:29).
In addition, cigarettes are a waste of money. A smoker spends
almost 6000 NIS annually on cigarettes. However, he does not
spend one tenth of it on charity.
Scholars unanimously agree that smoking causes a great deal
of harm. Ibn Bz, may Allah have mercy on him, said: it is not
permissible to smoke tobacco, or sell it, or trade in it just like
alcoholic drinks. Those who smoke it or trade in it should hasten
to repent and turn to Allah Almighty and remorse over the past
and resolve not to return back in doing this.
Ibn Uthaymn, may Allah protect him, said: So my advice to my
Muslim brothers who are afflicted by smoking is that they should
seek the help of Allah, Glorified and Exalted, and to resolve to
quit. True determination with the help of Allah and hoping for His
reward, and escaping from His punishment; in all of this there is
assistance in quitting smoking.
What did doctors say about smoking?
Dr. Clifford Anderson said The statistics conducted by the
American Cancer Society have shown that quitting smoking
reduces the risk of cancer by half. It is established that those
who do not smoke are the least susceptible to this diseaseDr. Canan Al-Gabi said I have been treating cancer for twenty
five years; none has come to visit me suffering from throat
cancer but smokers.
According to the report of the Royal College of Physicians in
London: The smoking of cigarettes in the modern era causes
death toll the same way it was caused by the most dangerous
epidemics in previous ages. The report mentioned that 95% of
patients with arteries of the legs are smokers and according
to a report by one of the American research centers Smoking
leads to higher mortality rate in the world compared to wars and
famines.
When are you quitting smoking?
After all this, do you not consider quitting smoking? As usual,
you will say, Yes!
I say when then are you quitting?
You would say tomorrow or the day after tomorrow, or after
that I will try to quit. Then, you are not convinced by what you
have read above, but will continue on smoking, you will never
give it up!
You would say, no! I am absolutely convinced by what has been
mentioned above, but it is difficult for me to get rid of it and I am
afraid that I will not continue in leaving it.
Then, what is the solution? Are we going to come to a dead end?
You will say it did not reach that far. Then, what is to be done?
You might say I may take another way to survive from the dangers
of smoking cigarettes, I will turn to pipes or Hubble-bubbles and
the like; they may be less harmful and less dangerous.
I have to tell you that you are but someone who jumped from
the frying pan into the fire, did you not know that what has been
previously mentioned of the dangers of smoking applies to
pipes, Hubble-bubbles and others.
You would say, I will move to a milder form of cigarettes,
that contain a small amount of nicotine and tar; which is the
big delusion. It has been proven to be ineffective and harmful,
because this is a reason for smoking a greater number of
cigarettes, which leads to absorbing more nicotine and tar, and
this occurs involuntary. So what is the solution?
There is no solution but to immediately quit smoking and
abandon it once and for all, I think highly of you. Your
determination is stronger than being unable to escape from the
captivity of a despicable cigarette. Quitting is not that hard if it
is accompanied by sincere determination , energy, and a strong
will.

3 in 1Effect, value, meaning, aim, ability, persuasion, confrontation,
survival, and challenge. These words crossed my mind when
I was watching 3 in 1 play. The three characters represent
the I, we, and us in the society. I was asking myself many
questions while watching the performance. During the play
I felt optimistic. There was many positivity in the play and it
motivated me to change for the better. However, the moment I
walked away from the theatre, all these words disappeared. The
optimism was replaced with pessimism. I started to think about
the difficulties of life and about what is acceptable and not.
Everything vanished at the end of the performance that lasted
fifty five minutes.
This performance was like a pause to reflect. It highlighted a
problem in the society. The problem was not only about theatre,
but also about singing, dancing, thinkingetc. It viewed the
obstacles and difficulties that artists face in all fields. There are
only two solutions for the problem either to give up or pursue the
dream no matter what. The writer for example can be criticized
for what he writes. This criticism could make him change his
writings to satisfy people. Thus, his writings will lose their value
because they do not represent what he believes in. The same
for the painter, if he draws for the satisfaction of people only, his
paintings will lose their meaning. It is either to be who you are
or who people want you to be.
3 in 1 play did not only shed the light on the suffering of theatreactors but it also provided personal, social, and religious
analysis. This made the theme of the play more profound. I kept
asking myself the same questions during the performance.
I was wondering if there was anyone in the audience who
asked himself the same questions. Why am I here? What have I
accomplished in the past thirty years? Where is the change that I
want? Where should I start? How can I contribute to the change
of the society? What is needed to do so? I keep having this
conversation with myself till now. I am searching for answers.
There was a scream inside the black walls of the theatre. Behind
the theatre walls there is a space, another world. In this world,
you can experience love and hatred. You should be who you are
even if others do not like it. You should scream. At first you could
face difficulties but then you will feel the change. Perseverance
is the key. There is a light at the end of the tunnel.
I watched my life folding before my eyes in the performance. I
asked myself What is next? Till when should I have to suffer?
I kept watching the play and I said The world is big but it is
getting smaller so as the sky and the sea. What if I changed the
sentences. The world is small but it is getting bigger. The sky
is small but it is getting bigger. The sea is small but it is getting
bigger. Would it make a difference?
The play ends but the questions are still there. The search for
answers needs willingness. The play was very beautiful from
the beginning till the end. However, I did not like the end. I
appreciate the efforts of Yes Theatre but the idea is to change
the misconceptions of people about art not to give up. Although
art is underestimated in our society, committing suicide is not
a solution.
Running away or committing suicide are not solutions for the
problem. In Palestine, if something does not fit the traditions it
would be rejected. What can be said then about Fadwa Tuqan
that is an example of change and revolution? What can be said
about Mahmoud Darwish? Despite the suffering, the Palestinian
society has many intellectuals, artists, theatre actors, painters,
writers, and inventors. They all contribute to the change of
society.
When I saw the balloon at the end of the performance. I was
happy like a child. I expected that the actor would carry it while
he performs throughout the world. I expected that he would notgive up and that he would prove himself to the others. However,
the end made me sad . My positivity encouraged me to invent
another scenario. I imagined that I had many balloons. I wrote
different words on the balloons such as norms, traditions,
negativity, hatredetc . Then, I popped them one after another.
Ideas should be presented even if they are faced with criticism.
Everyone should express his ideas even if they contradict what
others believe in.
I would like to thank Yes Theatre for the creativity and
uniqueness of its performances. Keep it up. Yes for Yes Theatre
and Yes for life.

Threes and Fours
Mohammad Titi / Artistic Staff Member
I am proud of generosity, honor, and virility.
I despise sarcasm, contradiction, andapathy.
I am frank, honest, and generous.
I avoid vanity, arrogance, and deception.
Worrying, sadness, hunger, and staying up
late destroy the body.
Piety, loyalty, generosity, and fear of God
bring joy.
Sleeping until after sunrise, missing
prayers, laziness and betrayal stop
sustenance (Rizq).
Staying up in the night for prayer,
excessive repentance, charity, and Ziqr
(Remembrance of God) bring sustenance

Alone
By Edgar Allan Poe
From childhoods hour I have not been
As others were; I have not seen
As others saw; I could not bring
My passions from a common spring.
From the same source I have not taken
My sorrow; I could not awaken
My heart to joy at the same tone;
And all I loved, I loved alone.
Then- in my childhood, in the dawn
Of a most stormy life- was drawn
From every depth of good and ill
The mystery which binds me still:
From the torrent, or the fountain,
From the red cliff of the mountain,
From the sun that round me rolled
In its autumn tint of gold,
From the lightning in the sky
As it passed me flying by,
From the thunder and the storm,
And the cloud that took the form
(When the rest of Heaven was blue)
Of a demon in my view.

My story started in the Negev desert. I was a shepherd who
worried about nothing. I used to rest under the shade of an
olive tree. It was lonely just like me. It was old. The 1948 warstarted. The country was bombarded and people died. I left
my sheep and the Negev. I lived in a small camp in Hebron.
The camp name was Al Arroub. Despite all that happened, I
have never forgotten that I am an Arab, the owner of the land.
I am the mountain on the outskirts of Hebron.
I planted my land with sacred trees. I planted it with figs,
olive, apricot, and lemon trees. I have lived in dignity despite
the siege and hunger. I have lived in dignity despite the
blood, the sighs, and the tears. When the 1967 war started,
the trees were cut once again. The houses were destroyed. I
was exiled to a far country. I became without a land, without
a home, and without a promise.
I lived in Diaspora . In 1994, I was promised to return to my
house, to my land, to my oil, and to my olive trees. I lived on
that hope despite the humiliation and the suffering.
At the end, I came back. What did I find? I found a new
suffering, wounds, and displacement. I went to visit the
olive tree in the Negev. I found it in its same place. No one
humiliated that tree. Why? Maybe because it did not leave. It
did not run away like I did.
I just want to sit under its shade and close my eyes forever.

Yes Theatre and I
Yes Theatre has great aims. The trainers in the theatre
keep on giving. They have interesting training methods such as
the ice breaking and team building activities. They also explain
and clarify everything to the participants. I really enjoyed my
training in the theatre. I found it very useful. Thus, it motivated
me to be creative. The training was energetic and fun. It was
one of the best trainings I have ever took. It provided me with
many techniques that would help me to be creative and unique.
Asma Al Rajabe
A participant in Yes4Future program, 2012
I work as a teacher in the old city of Hebron. The area
there suffers from various problems due to occupation. There
are many pressures on the people. I participated in the training
because I wanted to take some of that pressure off. I had many
expectations. The training met these expectation as it was very
interesting and it helped the participants express their feelings.
It was very useful for me specifically because I am studying
Theatre Literature. Therefore, I focused on the drama games and
exercises in the training. I discovered something new each day.
In addition, I realized that these games could help me deal with
the students. Thus, I have started carrying out the activities with
them inside the classroom. I would like to thank the trainers and
staff members because they were very patient (Raed Shyoukhi,
Mohammad Titi, Ihab Zahda, Ruba Jaddua, Hamam Amro).
Issa Mousa ShyoukhiA participant in Yes4Future program, 2012
The words tripped on my tongue and I lost all the letters.
I asked myself should I be happy or sad? How can I be sad
when I had this great experience that provided me with many
skills? How can I be happy when I have to say goodbye to the
team and to the family that I have been with for four months? We
went through a lot. We laughed and cried together. We felt tired,
proud, happy, and sad. How can I say goodbye to the people
that I shared the theatre stage with? On that stage, I had the best
moments of my life. The memories will be engraved in my heart
forever. Yes Theatre has the greatest team.
I will never forget the words of the trainer Raed Shyoukhi. He
was very patient. He was my teacher. His advice were very
inspiring. I would like to thank him for every word he said. I
hope that I will not disappoint him. I would also like to thank the
participants in the training You are the best.
Duha Eyad Al Junaidi
A participant in The Other Side play, 2012
I would like to say that my participation in Yes4Youth
training program 2012 was one of the richest and most
interesting experiences I have ever had. I learned a lot and
I acquired new skills with the help of a specialized staff. The
artistic staff of Yes Theatre has a long experience in drama,

Yes Theatre and I
Yes for future. Yes for learning and self development.
When I first came to Yes Theatre and participated in
Yes4Future, I just wanted to break the daily routine of my
life. I said to myself I will break the routine and acquire some
drama skills that will help me in the education process. When
the training started I felt a real change in my life. I realized
that practice helps in keeping information longer. In addition, I
realized that children will learn more and better when they carry
out the activities themselves Learning by doing.
Therefore, I would like to thank Yes Theatre for giving us the
opportunity to participate in programs such as Yes4Youth
and Yes4Future. I hope that Yes Theatre will always be
creative and unique. In addition, I hope that Yes Theatre will
surprise us with more plays that talk about our reality. I would
also like to thank these who work on Yalla Masrah and these
who participate in it. Furthermore, I thank the administrative
manager Mr. Mohammad Issa, the Chairman Mr.Yazid Zahda,
and the artistic staff that gave us the training Mohammad Titi,
Ihab Zahda, Raed Shyoukhi, and the technician Hamam Amro.

My experience in Yes Theatre was beautiful. I was introduced
to good people. I cannot express what I feel in just two lines.
In Yes Theatre I learned the basics of acting. I advise anyone
who has a dream to work hard to achieve it. I would like to thank
these who helped me especially the trainer Mohammad Titi and
his assistant Rami Darawish.

Everyone said It was an experience but I say it is
a part of my life. I laughed and joked. I played scenes from
different stories and novels. The smiles of the audience made
me very happy. It is great to be the hero. Yes Theatre has been
my friend for years. It is a great supportive friend. It helped me
achieve my dreams. Yes, it is Yes Theatre.
Allow me to thank all these who work in Yes Theatre especially
Mr. Raed Shyoukhi. I also would like to thank my parents who
allowed me to participate in The Other Side play. In addition,
I would like to thank my school principal Ms. Laila Farrash.

The Figure of the Issue
Naji Al Ali
Naji Salim al-Ali
(1937 29 August 1987)was a Palestinian cartoonist, noted for
the political criticism of the Arab regimes
and Israel in his works. He drew over
40,000 cartoons, which often reflected
Palestinian and Arab public opinion
and were sharply critical commentarieson Palestinian and Arab politics and
political leaders . On 22 August 1987,
while outside the London offices of al
Qabas, a Kuwaiti newspaper for which he
drew political caricatures, Naji al-Ali was
assassinated,
Naji al-Ali was born in 1937 or thereabouts
in the northern Palestinian village of Al-
Shajara, located between Tiberias and
Nazareth . He was exiled in the south of
Lebanon with his family after the 1948
Palestinian exodus (the Nakba), and
lived in Ain al-Hilweh refugee camp near
Sidon where he attended the Union of
Christian Churches school. After gaining
his Certificate he worked in the orchards
he attended the White Friars vocational
school for two years.
Naji al-Ali then moved to Beirut, where
he lived in a tent in Shatila refugee camp
and worked in various industrial jobs. In
1957, after qualifying as a car mechanic,
he travelled to Saudi Arabia, where he
worked for two years.
Handala: Handala is the most famous
of Naji al-Alis characters. He is depicted
as a ten-year old boy, and appeared
for the first time in Al-Siyasa in Kuwait
in 1969. The figure turned his back to
the viewer from the year 1973, and
clasped his hands behind his back. The
artist explained that the ten-year old
represented his age when forced to leave
Palestine and would not grow up until he
could return to his homeland; his turned
back and clasped hands symbolized
the characters rejection of outside
solutions. Handala wears ragged
clothes and is barefoot, symbolizing his
allegiance to the poor. In later cartoons,
he is actively participating in the action
depicted not merely observing it.
Handala became the signature of Naji
al-Alis cartoons and remains an iconic
symbol of Palestinian identity anddefiance.
Other Characters: Other characters
in Naji al-Alis cartoons include a thin,
miserable-looking man representing the
Palestinian as the defiant victim of Israeli
oppression and other hostile forces, and
a fat man representing the Arab regimes
and Palestinian political leaders who
led an easy life and engaged in political
compromises which the artist fervently
opposed. The motifs of the Crucifixion
(representing Palestinian suffering)
and stone-throwing (representing the
resistance of ordinary Palestinians) are
also common in his work.
Assassination: It is still not known
who opened fire on Naji al-Ali outside
the London office of Kuwaiti newspaper
Al Qabas on the 22 July 1987, hitting himin the right temple. Naji al-Ali remained
unconscious until his death on 29 August
1987. Although his will requested that
he be buried in Ain al-Hilweh beside his
father, this proved impossible to arrange
and he was buried in Brookwood IslamicCemetery outside London.
Quotes by Naji Al Ali
Whoever wants to write for Palestine,
whoever wants to draw for Palestine,
he must consider himself dead.
The conflict for me is to stand straight
like an arrow and never be tired.
The road to Palestine is neither far
or near but only at a distance of a
revolution.

Thoughts
Words for the CloudsI have never liked writing on the line. I really hate that blue lined
notebook. These lines imprison my words. I am really good
at tearing papers. I want to write on grass. I need to draw onclouds. I need trees and birds to learn. Take these books that
you have forced me to read. Take these notebooks that locked
up my dream. Take whatever you want but give me the morning
with its clear sky. I want to write on it with an eternal ink that
cannot be erased by the rain.

To Be or Not to BeThe first time I stood on stage I was shocked. My voice changedall of a sudden. Not only my voice but my feelings changed as
well. Should I step down or stay on stage? I stayed there for
a while. I invaded the audiences feelings and thoughts. It was
amazing. The unity with the theatre was very beautiful.
Can you understand what I feel when I stand on the stage?
I had the confidence that could make the bird feel like a hawk,
a spring feel like a river, and a flower feel like a garden. This
confidence made me realize that the dream can come true. Life
is a big theatre. The question is To be or not to be.
A bad person cannot be an actor because acting on stage needshonesty. He cannot be great on stage unless he dedicates his
greatness to the audience. The actor should be a role model.

The School of SuccessAge is a precious jewel. Each moment that goes away is
irreplaceable. We should know the value of age and spend the
years wisely. Only memories will be left for us. They will control
our hearts and minds. In our silence, we will remember what
we have accomplished in the past. We will search within us for
a new dream and a new hope. We will be determined because
determination creates a magical power. Without determination,
challenge, and persistence we cannot accomplish our goals.
When we want to accomplish our goals we usually face many
obstacles. In this case we have two options either to give up or
to keep going. We should motivate ourselves and fill our hearts
with good intentions. Furthermore, we should never lose hope
and we should be patient. Hope will always fly in the sky of
despair.

Dont be sadDont be sad if you find yourself walking alone. Dont be sad if
you find a dark black cloud that takes you to a sea of sadness.
Dont be sad if your dream or your friend abandons you. Dont be
sad if you spend a cold winter night and if you are desperate.
Dont forget that everything in life has two sides. You cannot
always be alone. You will get out of this long sadness with
a smiling face. A cool breeze will come from between the
mountains to refresh you. A new light will shine from the horizon
to remove the black clouds that invaded your years. You will
need someone to give you company.
Dont worry my friend if the standards of people change. The
basis of life is beauty. Dont worry if the features of life change
because the basis of life is balance. The basis of feelings is
love and not hatred, nobleness and not deception. Dont be sad.
Dont be sad.

then sent to the royal jeweler, whofi
led it into an artistic shape, edged it with gold, and embeddeddiamonds and other gems into the surface. The nail was very valuable then, and the king gave it

I love the Palestinian heritage. I live for my art. I chose the Palestinian heritage as a companion
of my art. I want to introduce it to the world. My drawings are inspired by the Palestinians right
to live. The Palestinian heritage will never disappear. It is engraved in our memories and will
stay there forever.
