Dear YAAEYC Members,

The year is flying by and early childhood programs are

facing many funding challenges. We need to remain

strong and make our voices heard. Early childhood Ac-

tion Day is May 1, 2012 in Harrisburg. If you have never

attended this event please consider doing so. It is a

chance to deliver the message that early childhood edu-

cation is important to state legislators. The event runsfrom 8 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. with a rally in the Capitol Ro-

tunda at 2:30. You can register yourself or your program.

well as scheduled legislative visits.

What’s New with Healthy Eating Guidelines?

By now most of you have heard there is a new food symbol to guide healthy eating. Gone isMyPyramid and in its place is ChooseMyPlate. Most nutrition experts agree that the new shape isbetter because it shows us what a healthy meal looks like. MyPlate is piled with fruits and vegeta-bles and shows they should be the main focus of every meal. What can be easier than telling your preschoolers half their plate should be full of fruits and veggies at every meal?

By going to the MyPlate website, http://choosemyplate.gov you will see great free materials you canuse in your healthy eating lesson plans, family newsletters, and/or learning tips for your own eatingplan. WellSpan Health also coordinates a Market Basket of the Month campaign. Below is thismonth’s newsletter. Monthly newsletters highlight a special fruit or vegetable and provide you withsimple serving ideas. The newsletters can be found at www.wellspan.org/marketbasket. Please feelfree to copy and share with your staff and parents.

Build a healthy plateBefore you eat, think about what goes on your plate or in your cup or bowl. Foods like vegetables,fruits, whole grains, low-fat dairy products, and lean protein foods contain the nutrients you needwithout too many calories. Follow these tips to build a healthier plate. Make half your plate fruits and vegetables. Switch to skim or 1% milk. Make at least half your grains whole. Vary your protein food choices. Choose foods and drinks with little or no added sugars. Look out for salt (sodium) in foods you buy - it all adds up. Eat fewer foods that are high in solid fats

Eat the right amount of calories for you

Everyone has a personal calorie limit. Staying within yourscan help you get to or maintain a healthy weight. Peoplewho are successful at managing their weight have foundways to keep track of how much they eat in a day, even if they don't count every calorie.

Enjoy your food, but eat less.

Cook more often at home, where you are in control of what's in your food.

When eating out, choose lower calorie menu options.

Write down what you eat to keep track of how muchyou eat.

If you drink alcoholic beverages, do so sensibly - limitto 1 drink a day for women or to 2 drinks a day for men.

of the Young Child in April.

often are not recognized for the hard work, dedication and love they give daily. YAAEYC would like to recog‐

nize these Outstanding Early Childhood Professionals at our event on April 25, 2012.

Week of the Young Child

There are a lot of wonderful things happening on the Week of the Young Child Committee! WOYCwill be from April 22nd-28th. The banquet is scheduled to be held at the fabulous Valencia Ballroomon Wednesday, April 25th. Check your email and be on the lookout for more information.

As you may know, we tie the Week of the Young Child into Pennsylvania’s One Book Every YoungChild selection. This year’s selection is Stop Snoring Bernard by Zachariah O’Hora. Start thinkingof some things you can do at your center to support Week of the Young Child. Some ideas are host-ing a pajama party, conducting a pajama drive for those less fortunate, or attending an evening storytime at your local library. The sky is the limit when it comes to promoting the importance of earlychildhood education!

The Week of the Young Child Committee is once

again asking for your help.

We would like to extend an invitation for parentsto help create theme related gift baskets to beutilized as door prizes during the recognition ban-quet at the Valencia Ballroom. Theme sugges-tions include: spa, sweets, international foods,coffee, tea, gardening, games, puzzles and sta-tionary. A sample parent letter that you can dis-tribute will be available on the YAAEYC websitein the Week of the Young Child section. Parents

are asked to submit their contribution by March30.

Baskets can then be brought to the United Wayor Children First Learning Center (215 St.Charles Way, York) by April 5th. Should youneed to make arrangements to have your basketpicked up, please contact Vickie Wooditch atCFLC, 741-5426 ext 21. Who knows, you or your staff just may be the recipient of one of thesespectacular gifts.

York County Early Childhood Education

Professional Award

Focus On Our Future is pleased to announce the opportunity for early child-hood educators to apply for a York County Early Childhood Education Profes-

sional Award and win $1,000.

Purpose of the Award: This award recognizes the importance of consistent,positive relationships between early childhood educators and children in high

quality early childhood education.

Description of the Award: Winners will receive $500 to implement a devel-opmentally appropriate project in their classroom and a stipend of $500.

The winners will be recognized at the Week of the Young Child Awards Re-ception on April 25, 2012.

The deadline to submit an application is

March 16, 2012 at 4pm.
