N E W S L E T T E RFrom the PrincipalThe Easter celebrations, which fall at the end of our coming Easter break, are the high point of the Catholic liturgical year. The Easter liturgies are always very powerful and moving, but one of my favourite gatherings in the lead up to Easter is Holy Thursday night. On Holy Thursday, we enter one of the most profound celebrations in the Catholic Church. During this liturgy, we recall the Last Supper and the institution of the Eucharist. It is also the Mass where the priest washes the feet of twelve parishioners as a way of symbolising Jesus’ action of washing the feet of his twelve Apostles. This ritual emphasises the importance Jesus puts on the humility and power of service and provides a clear example of what Servant Leadership should look like for us.

A Servant Leader realises that his or her ability to significantly influence others and affect any real change comes from being of service to others. As parents, we are Servant Leaders by the very nature of our role in raising children. Understanding the qualities of successful Servant Leadership can help us to further refine our parenting skills.

In the latest edition of the Qld Parents & Friends Association Newsletter, there is an interesting ar-ticle reflecting on the role of parents as Servant Leaders. Some of the ideas discussed in the article include:

Listening for UnderstandingListening first for understanding may require some time and possibly awkward silence with children. However, taking the time to listen to truly make sense of what the child is both feeling and thinking, instead of rushing to fix as we so often tend to do, can result in a much richer dialogue between parent and child.

Communication for ConnectionIn the busyness of our lives, at times, we forget to take time out to explain why we are so busy about our pursuits. It may help to relate our rationale to a child’s life such as, their learning goals in school or a saving goal for a coveted toy.

The Art of WithdrawalThe art of withdrawal is the ability to step back, to step out of the throes of current circumstances, and to reflect. This withdrawal could involve taking a walk in the park during an intense time. It could mean removing yourself from the room to another place to cool down. We return from our withdrawal with a sense of renewed purpose and clearer thinking to retain their trust and make sound decisions.

Acceptance and EmpathyFamily members need to feel accepted in the group at all times. Their membership needs to be treated and viewed as essential. We have all had a child ask us, “Will you love me no matter what?”, and we know that they need to hear it “Yes, come what may, no matter what, I will love you.” All kids need to hear it; not just once but often, especially in the times when they are failing, making poor choices, and generally feeling unsuccessful.

ForesightForesight is the ability to make responsible decisions combining factual information with our intuition. But in addition, we must consider the consequences down the road for the choices we are making today. Helping our children become responsible requires us to model that skill. Talking aloud about the ethics of a choice and how others might be impacted in future days or years can help children become aware that they need to consider their future and the future of others in their own decision-making.

Mrs Angela MylesCollege Principal

Head of Primary NewsThis is the last week of Term 1. Thank you parents and carers for supporting your children and their teachers. A big thank you to the teachers and the Primary Learning Leader, Ms. Celia King, for all the preparation, teaching and planning with our PLL. Everyone is looking forward to the break. I would like to take this opportunity to wish everyone a very happy and holy Easter. The death and resurrection of Jesus, our Saviour is the centre of our Catholic faith. If you get the chance please take the time as a family to pray, reflect and contemplate on the gift of new life that Jesus has given to us.

Attending some Easter services either here at Saint Mary’s church or at a church where you may be holidaying is also a great opportunity to experience as a family, this wonderful celebration.

Leanne De Lamour from the Commonwealth Bank came to our school to work with the students in Prep to Year 6 on activities in the financial education program. Financial Literacy is part of the curriculum. It was called the Start Smart program. Part of the session talks about the difference between ‘want’ and ‘need’ in relation to fiscal responsibility. To that end, in appreciation for taking the time to run this program a ‘Teleporter’ has been given to each child in Years 1, 2, 3 and 4.

These will be given to the students on Thursday. There are full instructions in the kit. In the kit, you will find a Sammy the Space Koala storybook, and a virtual reality headset called ‘The Teleporter’. You will need your own smartphone to download a free app called ‘The Teleporter Adventures’ to use with the Teleporter.

Friday is the last day of term and it is a full day at school. On that day, the children will be participating in a prayer reflection about our Easter story. This will be in the Maryknoll Centre on Friday morning starting at 9.10am.

Good Friday is the 14th April, Easter Sunday the 16th April. School resumes on Wednesday the 19th of April. I mentioned on assembly on Friday about the need for students to get to school on time ready to start the day. I know everyone is tired but there seems to be quite a few students signing in late in the mornings. When students are late to class it can add to their stress and anxiety levels as the day has already started, roll marked and often prayer has finished. As I explained at Assembly, if in Term 2 there seems to be a pattern, then the school will contact the parent to see if there is anything the school can assist with, to help get children to school on time.

Have a wonderful break, enjoy family and friends and stay safe.

God BlessMs Pam RadcliffeHead of Primary

Reports & Parent Teacher InterviewsYour child/ren’s Term 1 report will be posted to your parent portal on Thursday, 30th March. If your report has been requested via mail you will receive it shortly.

These reports reflect each student’s academic work for Term 1 2017.

• The interviews can be booked using the Parent Teacher Online facility using your enclosed login details.• Some teachers are not available on one or more of these days due to pre-committed professional development days or /

sporting excursions.

The PTO booking system will be online for making interview bookings from 9am Thursday, 30th March.

Please access the system as follows:• Go to the school’s home page www.saintmarys.qld.edu.au• Click the Parent Teacher Online link in the Quick Links• Enter your surname and PIN, (provided on the attached slip).

Full instructions are provided to you after log in. Please note the following points:• When you log on, the system displays only your own child/ren. Bookings are made for individual parents/carers, not for

couples. Couples can however log on to the system simultaneously to coordinate bookings. If two parents/carers wish to attend a single interview time slot, one parent/carer should make the booking then both can attend.

• You will only see time slots that are available at the time you are using the system. As time slots are booked by others, those time slots are no longer displayed as available. PTO prevents double-booking of teachers or parents/carers.

• When you have made all the bookings you require, you can download or email a report of your bookings for printing. You can log in and change bookings any time up to 9.00am on Monday 17th April

• No appointments can be made after this time.• The last sentence in the comment section will indicate if a teacher has requested an interview.• Other parents/carers may be making bookings at the same time that you are using the system. It is possible, though

unlikely, that a time slot is displayed to you as available, but is then booked by another parent shortly afterwards. If you then attempt to book this time slot it will not be available and a message will be displayed to indicate this.

• If you encounter any problems using PTO please contact the College office by phone on 4160 0900.

I am sure the system will be of benefit to students, parents and staff.

Kind regardsMr John DaltonAPA

APRE NewsYear 12 Retreat – ‘Be not afraid’Last week I was fortunate to be a part of the Year 12 Retreat at the Bunya Mountains. The purpose of the retreat is to allow students time away from school to reflect on some of their life and faith journey so far and to examine what’s important to them. Donna Power from Experience Wellbeing, walked us through many activities and sacred stories to help us engage in these endeavours. Her musical talent was very engaging and we were privileged to be led by her.

The students were a credit to themselves, the school and their families. Their participation and the level of trust they afforded the process, the staff and most significantly each other, was inspirational. The retreat experience is one that is hard to retell on return to the everyday because the environment and the opportunities are so different but it is designed to equip the students with tools for them to use, tools that might help them to ‘not be afraid’. Father Stephen came up and celebrated Mass with us and we are very grateful for his presence, wisdom and pastoral leadership.

The most memorable thing for me was the story of ‘the woman at the well’ that Donna broke open for us. The story taken from the Gospel of John, reminds us, that at times in our lives, we are all thirsty, restless for something we might not truly be able to identify. Jesus’ words to the woman reminded her of her dignity, they were a ‘living water’. The students on several occasions during retreat became that ‘living water’ by their words and actions and did so with a sincerity that was life-giving to each other and to staff that witnessed it.

I would like to thank the staff who supported the students and helped make this retreat a success, Mrs Martoo, Miss Schick, Mr Collier, Mr Mulcahy, Mrs Sullivan and Mrs Myles.

Kind regardsMr Martin PerrettAPRE

Primary Learning Leader NewsWelcome to our series of little tips and tricks for literacy support for your child at home. Maintaining the connection between home and school is important to us, and we value your desire as parents and carers, to contribute some ideas about how to help your child at home.

In a recent newsletter we looked at tips for reading at home with Early Years children. If your child is able to recognise some high frequency words in the text and is attempting to work out unknown words, you may find these tips helpful at home.

Supporting Developing Readers at Home.

Top Tips!1. If reading time is stressful, move the reading to a new location. Instead of sitting at the kitchen bench, move to the lounge

room floor or go outside under a shady tree. 2. Find a reading time that works for your family. Limit the time and set the timer if reading in the past has been difficult. It’s

better to have an enjoyable 10 minutes than a laborious 30 minutes where everyone is left feeling frustrated. 3. At the end of the 10 minutes, ask questions that encourage discussion, for example: What was your favourite part? Tell me

about the characters. What do you think will happen next? What did you think about the setting? Make it a relaxed conversation.

The less the child is interrupted during their 10 minutes of reading aloud, the more you support your child’s independence, resilience and confidence. I know it’s hard, but simply monitor the miscues, and listen as your child reads. Giving your child some feedback about strategies he/she could use when they are stuck, gives them a clear idea about how to improve.

A list of the reading strategies that we use at St Mary’s with Early Years students has been sent home with Take Home Readers earlier this term. If you missed out, or would like a second copy, please contact the office.

Happy reading!Ms Celia KingPrimary Learning Leader

Rugby League NewsStarting without several of our key players and a further three ruled ineligible due to age limits, it was a brave Saint Mary’s team that took to the field in the rain against Kingaroy State High. Ably lead by Hayden Binnie filling in the captaincy role, brilliantly backed up by Francis Hobbs our team put in a good show despite having to forfeit due to low numbers.

Kingaroy kindly matched our players and so we started 10 a side. Kingaroy scored first but Saint Mary’s soon levelled the score with a great try by Harry Burt which Ethan Norris converted. With a large number of reserves Kingaroy kept their players fresh while the

pace without a break told on our team. The final score was 42 to 14.

The two Harrys, Reeve and Flynn, both new to the game got into the action in this match. Ethan Norris played very well tackling hard and went so close to the try line. Harry Burt made some great runs and tackles along with his try. Playing fullback he pulled up a number of the opposition who had made a clean break and saved a number of potential tries. On one occasion tackling on his own a big opposition player who would have been twice his weight.

Francis Hobbs had a sensational game, throwing the dummy a number of times. Tackling continually, he also scored twice. The second try came right on the whistle when Binnie had kicked off for us, Binnie ran hard, flustered the opposition, got the ball and went “Oh!” so close to the line. Hobbs was there backing up and poetry in motion he was over the line with a try.

Congratulations to Hayden for the way he captained the team and continually inspired the boys to play as a team and to give their best. Well done Saint Mary’s.

P&F NewsWelcome to the last week of the term before 2 weeks break. Everyone is tired, cranky and pretty much fed up and that is just the parents and teachers.

Last Tuesday the P&F held their AGM to elect a new committee and review what was achieved over the past 12 months.

Last year our wonderful President Susan Robertson and Secretary Sharon McFarlane indicated they would resign from their elected positions. On behalf of the entire P&F and school thank you so much for the time and effort you have put into the committee over the past 2 years for Susan and 3 years for Sharon.

Neil Mungall, treasurer, has again kept the books balanced for us and we look forward to another year with him crunching the numbers.

The newly elected committee sees some new faces and some old faces that we can’t get rid of.

Treasurer - Mr Neil Mungall

Secretary - Mrs Alice Hauritz

President - Mr Damien Martoo

We all look forward to working as hard as we can for our amazing school to provide as much improvement as we can, through projects or funding requests for learning equipment throughout the school community.

Last week volunteer forms were sent home. I encourage you to please fill these out and return them to the school. Volunteers engaging in our school creates a community and a culture that grows the strength and spirit of the school.

Have a wonderful break. Travel safely and share the love of god over this Easter period.

Regards,Mr Damien MartooP&F President

Year 11 Camp2017 Emu Gully

It is a real privilege to be able to give our students the Emu Gully experience. A first time for me and for most of the students the Emu Gully facilities provided sequenced programs for character building and development. These provided peak experiences for individual and team success. Courage, mateship, perseverance and sacrifice were the character values that were threaded throughout the activities that simulated real life events associated with the ANZACS and other Australian serviceman.

A little dash of the elements, along with basic outdoor cooking and rations provided an environment for our Year11 students to step up and prepare for leadership amongst their peers.

A highlight for staff and students was the simulated Kokoda experience where students carried a stretcher bearing one of their peers. A moving moment was when all students went quiet (stealth mode) due to enemy proximity. The focus of their struggle was magnified, making visibly present what took place many years before at Kokoda, an event that still symbolizes the essence of Australian solidarity and mateship. Somewhere within the unforgiving muddy conditions, breaking through the silence of the struggling Year 11 souls, appeared the pure spirit of Kokoda.
