Vocabulary Practice

Shared reading

Listening and speaking (response to shared read)

Writing task Day 1 –modelled /class dictated

Remind the students about the routines for SSR and expect all students to be silently reading during this time. Monitor book/text choices and advise where needed. Remember to model good reading behaviour.Use a variety of games or activities to quickly rehearse the vocabulary, which will be used throughout the lesson, which the students may not be familiar with. Listening and speaking (introduction)Ask students if they know of anyone who works in the oil industry e.g. works for Shell. Show pictures of oilrig and petrol tanker as prompts. Encourage students to discuss the types of jobs and what the jobs might be like. Prompt with questions about clothing, hours of work, safety and conditions etc. Label the parts of the oilrig as the week progresses and as they come up in the shared read. (It doesn’t matter if the labels are not 100% correct, so long as a general idea is gained.)Ridwan works on an oilrig. He is a derrick hand. He works during the night time and then rests during the day time. This is Ridwan’s diary.

Monday 24th MarchWhat a night! I had just started working on the derrick when there was a thunderstorm. There was heavy rain, and a lot of lightning. I was already up high on the derrick so I stayed there. I had my harness on to keep me safe but I was still worried. After I finished my work, I had breakfast. I had sausages, toast and eggs. Now, I’m going to bed. I need a good sleep. Comprehension Questions:

1. Where does Ridwan work?2. When does Ridwan work?3. Why was Ridwan worried?4. What happened when Ridwan had just started work?

Page 2: Y4 U2 W1 2014

5. What did Ridwan have for breakfast?Listening and speaking (response)Choose an activity that encourages students to talk about what they did yesterday e.g. circle time, roll the ball, turn to your partner. Use the sentence starter “Yesterday I …” Teachers may need to model this first. This activity will continue all week. Use a different approach each day. Teachers should encourage increased complexity of responses as the week progresses. Again, this may need to be modelled.Modelled/Class dictated writing :Teacher displays features of diary writing on large paper alongside shared read (teachers can use all or just choose some of the features below). Ask students to identify features in the shared read. Features of diary writing DateFirst personPast tensePersonal tone Self-reflectionRhetorical question – a question which does not require an answerShort sentencesExclamation markParagraphs – opportunity to introduce or teach this to those students who are readyTeacher tells about what he/she did yesterday and asks students to develop this further e.g. “Yesterday I went to The Mall. What did I do there?” Continue to write as students suggest ideas. Read together when completed. Check features against checklist.

Listening and Speaking (introduction)

Write the sentence ‘I felt proud of myself’ on the board and discuss what it means (make sure the students realise that this is in the past tense). Have the students offer suggestions for times when they have felt proud of themselves. Ask them to share them with the class.

Tuesday 25th MarchThat was a better night! First, I checked that the mud pumps were working on the new drill hole. Next, I checked the other pumps. The pumps were all working.

Page 3: Y4 U2 W1 2014

Day 2 –group There were 98 people on the oilrig last night. I had to keep everything working well to keep everybody safe. I felt proud of myself. I did my job carefully. This morning the chef made porridge for breakfast. Yum! Comprehension Questions:

1. How did Ridwan feel about his night??2. What job did Ridwan do first?3. How many people wereon the oil rig?4. Why does Ridwan feel proud of himself?5. What did Ridwan have for breakfast?

Listening and Speaking (response)Choose another activity that encourages students to talk about what they did yesterday e.g. circle time, roll the ball, turn to your partner. Use the sentence starter “Yesterday I …” Try to extend responses beyond simple sentences today by encouraging the students to say more than one sentence. More able students can be encouraged to use adjectives, compound and more complex sentences.

Group WritingProvide groups with the diary template provided. Ask them to recount Ridwan’s night at work, identifying the key points/main points from the shared read. OR Provide groups with the diary template provided, or create your own. Students decide as a group where they went. This could be the beach, park, school, somebody’s house etc. Group members take turns to create a sentence to add to the diary entry. Remind students to use past tense. Teachers can refer students to the features list to remind them of other parts of diary writing they need to include if appropriate.

Diary of Ridwan, Oil Rig Derrickhand

Monday 24th March 11.00pmI feel very tired tonight. I am not used to working at night-time. My shifts are usually in the day. My boss said I have to work at night-time for the next two weeks, although at the end of that I will get one week off. My job is very dangerous in the daytime, so I am a bit worried about doing it in the dark. Luckily, the oilrig has many lights and safety rules to protect us.Tuesday 25th March 11.15amWhat a night! I had just started working on the derrick. Fifteen minutes later, a huge thunderstorm came. There was heavy rain, and a lot of lightning. I was already up high checking the lift cables. I had my harness on to keep me safe and stop me from falling but I was still worried. I am having sausages, toast and eggs for my breakfast and then I will go to bed. I really need a good sleep.

Tuesday 25th March 11.15pmI feel better tonight. I had a great sleep, although it was noisy outside today. Some people arrived on a boat to help drill the new hole. It goes deep down into the seabed. The machines were very loud. Tonight I will check the mud pumps to make sure they are working properly. It is important that the new well is safe for everyone to work on.Wednesday 26th March 11.30amThat was a better night! I checked that the mud pumps were working on the new drill hole. Next, I checked the other mud pumps too. Luckily, all the pumps were working well. There are ninety eight people working on this oilrig. It is important that I keep the equipment working well to keep everybody safe. I feel very proud of myself because I do my job carefully. This morning the cook made porridge for breakfast. Yum!

Wednesday 26th March 10.30pm

I had to get up early tonight. There was a meeting with the engineers about keeping safe. Working on an oilrig has many dangers. We work out in the middle of the sea on a big metal platform. If it is windy or stormy, the platform gets very wobbly. Sometimes the waves come right over the top. There is a lot of heavy machinery too. If we are too tired or don’t pay attention to our jobs, we can get hurt. Luckily, we have comfortable beds and a great cook. Our meals are always healthy. We even have a small gym where we can exercise.Thursday 27th March 12.15pmI decided to go to the gym after breakfast today. My friend Arif asked me to go with him. We exercised for an hour then had a shower and some lunch. Today the chef made pasta and salads for lunch. There is another storm coming. I can see the clouds when I look out at the sea. I hope I get a good sleep before I have to work tonight.

Thursday 27th March 11.30pmThe storm was huge! It was very windy and the heavy platform bounced up and down in the sea like a small boat. Some people got seasick from the rocking. I kept waking up with the loud bangs and crashes so I feel very tired tonight. My first job is to check that the wind and waves did not break anything. After that, I will have to clean the mud tanks and make sure there are no leaks. I expect I will get very dirty tonight.

I got so dirty last night! The huge storm had cracked one of the pipes and some oil was leaking slowly out of it onto the platform. That made the platform very slippery. I had to fix the pipe quickly to stop the leak and we had to get the Roustabouts to clean it so nobody would fall over. Usually when I clean the mud tanks, it is in the daytime.
