What are the best conditions for

exam preparation?

• Students need to be well rested

• This will require them to go to bed sufficiently early to get enough sleep

• During the exam period it is essential students do not go out partying the day before an exam

How can parents help?

• Allow time for your child to revise; they may have less time for family commitments and socialising, when revising.

• Suggest that they revise in half-hour bursts with short breaks in between.

• Provide them with a quiet space to work if possible, free from distractions.

How can parents help?

• Sit and listen to your child if they want to read work aloud to you.

• Encourage them to use revision guides and you test them on key points

• BUT, you cannot do it for them!!!

Structured Revision

• Encourage the use of a revision timetable

• Identify how many subjects are going to be examined

• Plan with them what they need to study after school Monday to Friday and what revision will take place over the Saturday and Sunday

• Remember to include breaks and social time

What can you do when things go

wrong?

I hate this subject – I’m going to

drop it!

• This is all or nothing thinking

• Issues are over exaggerated in importance

• Discuss the issue with your child and try to help them solve it

• The trick is to help them see that the problem is manageable with a solution

I’ve left it too late to revise

• This can result in demotivation and an attitude that there is no point – this is again all or nothing thinking

• It is never too late until you enter the exam room

• With revision – a little knowledge is better than none

Adverse Circumstances

• These are things like severe illness or bereavement which may cause a student to perform badly in an exam or in the very worst circumstances, to miss it altogether

• It is ESSENTIAL you communicate this to the academy immediately

Stress

• This is normal and actually necessary to successfully tackle exams

• However, too much stress can lead to excessive tiredness, headaches and loss of interest

• The remedy is to encourage time away from work, maybe exercise which releases hormones which counter stress

Resources for the students to use:• English staff will provide students with sources and writing tasks to

develop/practise your exam skills. It’s essential that home work is completed.

• GCSE Bitesize is a great resource for both Language and Literature.

• Read newspapers (preferably broadsheets like the Guardian and the Times) and practise your analytical skills.

• AQA/CGP revision guides are available to buy online but please make sure they are appropriate for the new GCSEs – if you need guidance with this, students can ask their teacher.

Mr Birling

Use of dramatic irony: “unsinkable, absolutely unsinkable”

Refusal to change and see the error of his way: “I can’t accept any responsibility”

“Look, you better ask Gerald for that ring you gave back to him, hadn’t you?”

Capitalist attitude of ‘profit over people’, he’d even compromise his own daughter

to climb the social ladder.

“I’ve got to cover this up as soon as I can” Mr B. has learnt nothing

from the experience and prioritises image and status over

social responsibility.

differences/age,class, family, social

responsibility
