With college being such a hot topic nowadays, the Y-Scholars Program may seem like another academic program trying to outreach and get students into college. Though that is one big purpose for the program, the heart and soul of the program have always been about establishing close relationships and building strong people. In fact, over the past few years, there has been something brewing within the Y-Scholars Program. We believe we can build a community of academic and self-improving learners in order to create an environment where people understand why they are in the program and how they can use Y-Scholars to reach their goals. There are five attributes we strive to promote in all of us within the Y-Scholars Program: commitment, leadership, attitude, self-discipline, and passion (CLASP). For the Y-Scholars community to progress, we the staff as well as the students must constantly evaluate ourselves and push toward higher levels in each of those five areas. In doing so, we are able to improve ourselves, influence others, and take the whole program to a new level every year. What this program has always done is to challenge both the students and the staff to go beyond what they originally thought they were capable of. We ask for students to not only commit to the program, but also submit high-quality work. Students are given opportunities to speak in front of their parents and be in charge of coordinating social events. For staff, we are constantly checking ourselves to see what we are doing and how we can make the program experience better for everyone. Even though I have been with the program for 11 years now, I am consistently growing as a person and as a professional. Think critically about how different you are now compared to the beginning of the year or even when you first joined the Y-Scholars Program. I have no doubt you all have grown tremendously, and I encourage you to continue reflecting on what you can do to self-improve in the future. Finally, as a graduate, you now actually have a bigger responsibility in the Y-Scholars community. No, it is not to do more than four hours of tutoring a week in college. Instead, it is now your turn to be the role model for the younger Y-Scholars, for they will be looking to you and what the program has done for you. Help them grow and succeed just like someone had done for you in this program. Motivate them to understand why they should stay with the program all the way through senior year. Be a mentor, come back and be part of our college panels, stay in contact through the Y-Scholars Alumni Association, or even be an ambassador for your college. Knowing and being able to serve others is a beginning step to becoming a leader. Even more, you will feel a sense of fulfillment and accomplishment that will guide you to many opportunities in the future.

In my freshman year, I came into Berkeley High School unsure of what I wanted to do. I knew I wanted to go to college after I graduated from high school, but I had no idea how I was going to get there or what I needed to do. With so many paths and opportunities out there along with the many different suggestions from school counselors and other students, it was easy to feel lost. However, with the help of my Y-Scholars Program counselors every year, I was able to fulfill all of my requirements and succeed in high school. I earned good grades, challenged myself in AP classes, and joined a sport. All of these factors made me a competent student when applying to colleges. This long road has not been an easy ride. For me, I often hit a brick wall in terms of feeling the pressure to keep myself busy after school and trying to meet the requirements of the Y-Scholars Program. Because I was an athlete, it was very difficult for me to complete my tutoring hours afterschool. But, because sports and academics were both important to me, I communicated my dilemma to my program counselor. To my surprise, the Y-Scholars Program was open and flexible in terms of working with me. In fact, my counselor and I made a plan so that I would be able to fulfill my tutoring requirements by matching me up with a personal mentor who was a student from UC Berkeley. Having a mentor meant we were able to meet after my practices, during lunch, or whenever worked for me and her. My mentor, Kristy, worked with me for two years. I first met her in freshman year when she was my program counselor. Because we had built a good relationship, she agreed to become my mentor during my sophomore and junior year. She helped me in everything from writing AP English papers to pushing me to challenge myself and not give up too quickly. In addition to academic support, she also treated me like a college-bound student. She showed me around the Cal campus and shared her college freshman year experience and what the transition was like. I felt I could connect with her well because I was receiving advice from an older person who had already gone through what I am going through right now. Therefore, she became a confidant that I could depend on whenever I had problems with friends, family, or school. Though Kristy graduated last year and is currently living in Malaysia, we still keep in contact. In fact, she contacted me recently to see where I was heading off to college. Even though she is in a different country, her effort to reach out to me shows how much the staff and volunteers want the students to succeed. Like my mentor, everyone who works for the Y-Scholars Program cares about all of the students. I have come to realize that the staff here really will do anything they can in order for the students to achieve a higher education and help us get to where we want to be. It does not matter what our aspirations are whether they are community college, a four-year university, or the work field, the Y-Scholars staff guide us in mapping out a path for ourselves. After being a Y-Scholar for four years, I now feel ready to succeed thousands of miles away from home at Boston University. I am determined to become a great economist and to be a positive role model in my community.

Paola Alonso-Franco Student Story - Staying Committed to the Program

I remembered during my freshman year, I did not like school at all. In fact, I would skip my classes almost everyday. For some reason, I did not care to think that my grades were ever going to affect me. I believed my teachers would not notice that I was skipping classes since the school was so big. In my sophomore year, my grades started catching up to me. One day, I got a wakeup call from one of the counselors at Berkeley High School. She sternly warned me that if I did not bring my grades up, I would be transferred to Berkeley Tech because that is where they send students who need to make up credits for classes. Her words really shook me up. I had heard so many bad things about B-Tech, and I knew it would be difficult to pursue college because that school’s main focus is to help students graduate high school and not necessarily prepare you for college. Even worse, the main concern going through my mind was how my mother would react to all of this. Once she received the news, she was going to be so furious and disappointed at me. I knew she expected me to graduate and go to college and be the first one from my family to graduate from college. I did not want her to be so disappointed in me. At that point, I knew I had to change my attitude towards school. That summer, I signed up for courses at Berkeley City College so that I could make up the credits I needed. Doing so allowed me to start the next semester of school without having to make up so many credits. In my junior year, I set out on a mission to pass all my classes. By the end of the year, I had met my goal. I achieved it by coming to Y-Scholars every day right after school for tutoring. Sometimes, I would even be there after tutoring had ended for the day. Fortunately, Mr. Cruz and Audi were always there to help me in whatever I needed and answer any questions I had. Even more, my program counselor never gave up on me and encouraged me to keep fighting to improve in my academics. In my senior year, I started hearing everyone talk about college. I was fearful of even applying to any colleges simply because things were not looking too hopeful for me. I believed that I would not be admitted anywhere because of my poor grades from my freshman and sophomore years. I did not even know where to start with college applications. However, the Y-Scholars Program really helped me navigate through the application process. I was constantly encouraged in my one-on-one meetings with Sonia, my current Y-scholars Program counselor. She helped me with everything from college applications to FAFSA and scholarships. It feels reassuring when there is a person right by my side for support, and I have been really grateful for her time and dedication to me. The biggest surprise came when I found out that I had been accepted into three colleges! I was shocked and humbled. I felt privileged and fortunate to have been able to turn things around at just the right time. The Y-Scholars Program has been a huge part of my positive change in my academic pursuit, and I wish to thank everyone in the program for believing in me. At this point, I am hoping to confirm to my acceptance to San Francisco State University and major in Child Development this Fall. Hard work pays off, but just as important is having the right people to guide and motivate you.

SELENA VEGA Student Story - Changing Attitudes and Self-Discipline

Page 19: Y-Scholars Class of 2013 Yearbook

Throughout my four years of high school, I have grown as a Y-Scholar both personally and professionally. I joined Y-Scholars as an incoming freshman in September 2009. Though this program offers many valuable opportunities to its participants, the most beneficial parts of the program for me have always been meeting new people and creating one-on-one connections with my Y-Scholars counselors. I am able to get to know many people both from Berkeley High and UC Berkeley. Even though we only have a certain amount of face time each week, it feels like I have known the people in Y-Scholars my entire life. We develop deep conversations about our families, school, and life experiences. Being around positive people and role models has influenced me to reach out to others and understand their backgrounds. My current counselor, Veronica, is always there for me. She is almost like another big sister. She gives me great advice, shares her snacks, and makes sure I am on the right path. It is wonderful that the Y-Scholars staff can see me grow academically and as a person who is striving for success. Each year, I find myself in some type of hardship or challenge, which takes a toll on my school and personal life. However, my counselors have always helped me push through these moments in my life by expressing their unlimited support. Last year, I had overwhelmed myself by taking on too many responsibilities with school, extracurricular activities and work. There were many moments where I wanted to throw in the towel and give up. However, Selena, my Y-Scholars counselor at the time, sat me down and exchanged inspirational and motivational words with me to keep me seeing the positive side of things. I turned her words into actions and overcame this huge challenge. The program counselors are always there for me when I need them. Y-Scholars represents what a true family looks like, and I am privileged to be a part of this close-knit community. With the help of the Y-Scholars Program staff and resources, I will continue my education next year at the University of California, Berkeley, as an Incentive Awards Participant and a Gates Millennium Scholar. I am currently undecided in terms of choosing my major, but I definitely have an interest in the sciences. I plan on taking the skills I have learned from the Y-Scholars Program and applying them to my life in college. I have gained valuable relationships that I will cherish here at Y-Scholars, and I will continue to expand my support network once college life starts. I look forward to meeting new people that will help me define myself and grow as a independent, liberal, and intelligent person.
