Stephanie MillerKFI Host Takes to the Tube
More radio stars are crossing over totelevision than ever, it seems, with KFI(640 AM) being a major case in point.KFI's evening talk host Stephanie Millerjoins colleagues Rush Limbaugh and BillHandel next September when she getsher own shot at becoming the nextJohnny Carson. Disney execs noticed thecomedy call -in show host when she wasstill in her first month at KFI doing week-ends. The syndicated show is already setto air in more than 60 percent of thenation's television markets according toMiller.
The comedienne majored in theatre atUSC and honed her skills performingwith the L.A. Connection and at Thelmprov. Returning to her native Buffalo,N.Y., she stumbled into radio when afriend invited her to contribute comedyroutines to his morning radio show. Hermaterial was well -received. She went intoradio full-time with her own morningshow, mixing music with comedy atWCMF in Rochester. Hot 97 (WQHT) in

Miller loves the freedom of an all -talkstation.
"I can go full out from 7 to 9 withouthearing my boss say. 'Shut up and playthe music,' " she said. "Besides, being inL.A. radio is like getting paid to auditionfor every producer in town. -Shake, Rattle and Roll
KLOS (95.5 FM) has felt the burn ofnumbers crashing through the stratos-phere after many years of stellar ratings.Longtime Bob Coburn, Joe Benson andGeno Michellini got their pink slips andthe revised format brings uptempo pre-sentation with more emphasis on newmusic. KLOS program director CareyCurelop explained all the changes at hisstation.
"In August 1994 we started to revampour musical direction," he said. "Wewanted to make it a more contemporary -sounding radio station rather than a clas-sic rock station that plays new musicoccasionally. Once we made the musicchanges - in order to complete thetransformation - we needed to changethe talent."
Former fill-in KLOS personalityRandy Maranz takes the 10 a.m. to 2p.m. shift. Ex-KNAC 105.5 personalitiesLong Paul and Remy Maxwell arc incharge of the 2 p.m to 6 p.m. and 6 p.m.to 10 p.m. time slots, respectively.
With hard -rocker KNAC's imminentdemise, the moves make sense, especial-ly now that Arrow 93 and KLSX have justabout locked in all the retro-rock listen-ers. KLSX snapped up mellow JoeBenson and Bob Coburn.Briem's Replacement
Ira Fistel has some big shoes to fillover at KABC now that Ray Briem hasvacated the slot he held for 27 years.Fistel has a moderately conservative take
on the issues of the day. L.A. night owlswere accustomed to Briem as he gar-nered the best talk show ratings in townduring the time slot. Some may recall hisearly days spinning platters at KGIL andKLAC before becoming a talk show hostin 1967.Snyder Comes to KGRB
Tom Snyder
CBS created a new late -night program-ming block by incorporating "The LateLate Show" with Tom Snyder into athree-hour radio program. The new showconsists of a live simulcast of Snyder'sCBS televison show with two extra hoursof interviews with Elliott Forrest, a for -

Multiculturalism has conic to KABC790 Saturday nights from 7 p.m. to 9p.m. According to host/actor/broadcasterMario Machado, the aim of "The Voiceof Multiculturalism" is to challenge lis-teners to honestly express their fears andbeliefs.
"I told my audience that I had neverdined at an African -American's homebecause I didn't know if their standardsof hygiene were the same as mine orwhether my car would get stolen whileparked in their neighborhood," Machadosaid. "The phones lit up like crazy withAfrican -Americans calling in to invite meinto their homes for dinner - so I couldsee for myself that everything would hefine."

rhythm and blues oldies format this falland will now air gospel music. KRLA's(1110 AM) soul -flavored oldies soundprobably hastened the demise of the ven-erable "dusties 1230," one-time home ofsuch radio greats as Hunter Hancock andThe Magnificent Montague.
Soul and rhythm and blues oldies arenow heard on KACE (103.9 FM), whichmade the switch from soft urban contem-porary. Kevin Fleming. program director, manages the new FM format from theKOST/KFI facilities in downtown L.A.
"The station now features the biggestartists of the '60s and the '70s," Flemingsaid. "We arc finding that although ourtarget demo is narrowly Afro-Americansand Hispanic between the ages of 30 and54, our audience is much broader thanthat."
The current lineup starts with Rico (6a.m.-10 a.m.), then Antoinette Russell(10 a.m.-3 p.m.), followed by Gillian (3-8 p.m.) and winds up with "The QuietStorm" hosted by E.Z. Wiggins until I

KFI 640 AMWhen KFI first unfurled its motto,"We

Bill Lewis, marketing and promotionmanager, explained the reaction to the signs.
"In the fall we launched an outdooradvertising campaign, which some peo-ple thought to be inappropriate and blas-phemous," he said.
"We were asked by the Los AngelesTransit Companies to either change it orremove it altogether."
KFI marketing minds revised their lineto "We cut through the carp."
In May the station's afternoon talkteam of John and Ken personallyinvolved themselves in the Menendezbrothers' case. After a mistrial wasdeclared, the D.A.'s office announcedthere were insufficient public funds toprosecute properly. With the help of theirlisteners,John and Ken organized a yard
