Principal’s Post
Greetings, Families!
May is finally, here and it is one of the busiest times for all of us! Please try to allow yourself a few extra minutes when dropping off and picking up your students. Staff have noticed some impatient driving in the parking lot lately. Chuck Ripley, parent and Faith Formation Board member, is planning to present a plan for how to improve parking lot safety at the next FFB meeting (6:30 PM, May 14th, in the library). We purchased quite a few new large orange cones to assist with safety in the parking lot.
Registrations for the 2015-16 school year are still being accepted. If you are concerned about paying tuition, please remember that the first thing to do is to fill out a Family Tuition Plan application as soon as possible and turn it in to Liz King at Assumption. Email me if you need a copy of the application.
The variety show on Monday was a great success! Students had a lot of fun showing their talent and flair for the dramatic. Come and see more talent at the band concert on Thursday, May 7th at 6:30 PM!
A Lourdes grad recently applied for a teaching position at our school. He said that he loved attending Lourdes and that teaching here would be his dream job. It is wonderful to hear such nice things about our school. Thank you for choosing Lourdes.
May God Bless You,
Ms. Jennifer Alongi, Principal
A note from the Home and School President
In my last message as Home and School President, I would just like to thank everyone for a great year! It is amazing to me how fast a school year can go and how much can get done in that time. We had some great events this year, including the extremely successful Starry Night Fundraiser!
Next year we will have many new faces on the Home and School Board and will be looking forward to planning more fun filled events. Jenny Grobstich will take over as President as I move into the role of Ex-Officio.
I truly hope that you all have a wonderful (and longer than usual) summer and rest up for all the amazing events that we have planned for the 2015-16 school year!
Thank you & God Bless you all, Christa Merritt [email protected]

Financial Results
It is so exci0ng to share the results from our annual fundraiser. There are s0ll a few expenses that s0ll need to be paid but this will give you an idea of how successful the Lourdes Starry Night event was. We will be issuing a payment to the Lourdes Catholic Church Endowment Fund for 10% of the proceeds or approximately $6,285 and we will be replenishing the Field Trip Fund with $5,000. That will leave about $50,000 for the new textbooks and technology upgrades that Ms. Alongi is planning to purchase.
Total Revenue $73,012.00 Total Expenses $10,161.85 Net Revenue $62,850.15
I want to extend a big thank you to the Lourdes Starry Night CommiRee especially Margaret Miller for making this possible through all of their hard work and dedica0on to our school. THANK YOU!!!

Book Giveaway/Exchange In Celebration of Children’s Book Week
May 4th – 8th, 2015
Join us in our book exchange/giveaway in celebration of Children’s Book Week! Tables will be set up in the Lourdes Library during the next couple weeks and students are encouraged to bring a book to trade or just choose one from the many books that have been donated by both parents and teachers. Preschool – 5th graders will have the opportunity during library time to trade/choose a book to keep. Middle school students are welcome to participate as time permits.
GIRL SCOUTS
Some of the girls from Daisy Troop 4309 attended an event at the Figge Museum. They had a short tour, painted a recycled birdhouse, and then made pine cone bird feeders. They had a wonderful time learning about art and making some of their own.
Thank you to all the families that attended Lourdes Family Movie Night. Everyone had a great time watching Despicable Me 2. The 7th and 8th Grade Students worked hard at the concession stand and raised another $200 to go towards their Washington DC trip! We would also like to thank Mrs. Lawrence for setting everything up to make our movie night a huge success.

QUAD CITY SYMPHONY: You may have noticed some artistically created cellos gracing private and public spaces in the Quad Cities. This is part of the Quad City Symphony’s celebration of 100 years. We are fortunate to have one of the cellos right here at Assumption. Our generous sponsor, Dick Kleine, allowed two Advanced Art Students, Ellie Vonderhaar and Lauren Dunahugh, the opportunity to create one of the cellos. It will be displayed right here at Assumption until the end of May. Then all cellos will be moved to the Figge Art Museum for all to view the week of May 27. (Free admission to the main floor). Cellos will then be auctioned to make money for youth programs through the Symphony. Also, if you have a chance, Mrs. Secker-Brosman also created a cello. Her cello is made from metal, chandelier glass and it lights up. You can see her’s at Bass Street Chop House, downtown, Moline.
VOLLEYBALL: The Volleyball program will have a meeting for all players and parents on Friday, May 8, at 6:00 PM in the Main Gym at Assumption High School to discuss the summer volleyball schedule. 2nd Grade
In April, the second graders celebrated their Egyptian unit with the annual Egyptian party. This continues to be great annual tradition that provides great fun and culmination of our biggest theme unit in the second grade. Also, in April, the second graders were blessed to celebrate their first holy communions, both with their families and with their schoolmates, at two separate masses. In May, we will wrap up our school year with lots of fun things, including a theme all about Dogs!
Coming to America!
On April 24th the third grade students used all of their immigration knowledge and headed to Ellis Island. The students took part of “Immigration Day”. During Immigration Day, students moved through stations as if they were immigrating to the United States through Ellis Island. There were Give stations for the students to rotate through. They worked through a Questioning Station, a Passport Station, a Waiting Station, a Physical Examination Station and a Food Station. When asked what their favorite station was, almost everyone said it was the food station. In the food station, the “immigrants” got to taste foods from different ethnic backgrounds. There were tamales, Mexican cake, Swedish meatballs, Irish soda bread and many other things. All of the students had been doing research about how people immigrated to the United States and where their own families had immigrated from. It was a fun morning that only could have been pulled off with all the wonderful volunteers who were able to come in and those who sent in food or materials. I could not have done it without you! Thank you so much!
4th Grade
The Fourth Graders are studying Sound in Science. They are completing their last region in Social Studies, The West! They will present National Park projects from this region in poster or powerpoint form. They are completing the Ten Commandments in Religion. 4th grade had a great time visiting Assumption High School last week. They attended a P.E class, Art, Band, and Music.
Last week First Grade went on a field trip to the Botanical Center to wrap up our Science Unit on the Rain Forest. While we were there we learned about carnivorous plants, went on a sun garden tour, and planted a plant in their green house that we got to take home.
6th Grade Spanish and Religion Right now we are studying classroom objects and have been doing several speaking, writing and hands on activities to learn our new vocabulary. In Religion, students are learning about how prophets shared God's message and people in exile were given hope.
7th Grade Spanish Students are learning party and chore vocabulary, about irregular verbs and affirmative tu commands. They are also exploring the customs and culture of Ecuador.
8th Grade Spanish and Religion Currently in Spanish students are learning vocabulary to shop at a market and how to conjugate irregular verbs in the past tense. The country they are investigating is Puerto Rico. In Religion, 8th graders are studying Christians of the Middle Ages. They are learning about how the Church fought to recover the Holy Land and the Church struggled with corruption.
