The announcement came during NSW Premier Gladys Berejiklian’s three-day trade mission to Guangdong Province, where she was joined by a delega- tion of more than 50 NSW busi- ness organizations to promote and export NSW innovation. “Expanding our expertise in education is a great success story for NSW,” Berejiklian said in a statement. “And this venture by UTS will further strengthen our global reputation as a leader in this field.” The agreement is set to focus on advanced manufacturing, robotics and furthering develop- ment in computing innovation. Berejiklian said the partner- ship was a “product of years of work” between UTS and Shenzhen to develop more col- laborative research. Also high on the agenda for the trip is the topic of smart cities. The state of NSW is set to embark on the development of a new airport on the outskirts of Sydney, which has been dubbed the “Aerotropolis.” Highly impressed by the smart city infrastructure of Shenzhen, Berejiklian said “NSW and Guangdong share a commit- ment to building smarter cities, and this kind of technology can help us in the future.” “There is much we can learn from successful smart cities,” she said. During a meeting with Bere- jiklian on Monday, Shenzhen Party chief Wang Weizhong vowed to enhance exchanges and cooperation with NSW in higher education, medi- cal health, biotechnology and fashion design, while the visi- tor said her state would like to support China’s Belt and Road Initiative, conduct in-depth collaboration with Shenzhen in scientific innovation and urban infrastructure, and encourage NSW-based enterprises to invest in Shenzhen. On the east coast of Aus- tralia, NSW is Australia’s most populous state, with over 7.8 million people. The August report, “Scaling the Fintech Opportunity: for Sydney and Australia,” shows NSW is now home to almost two-thirds of Australia’s fintech companies. There were less than 100 fintech companies in Austra- lia in 2014, but now the number has reached 579. NSW has led the way for growth with 61 percent of all Australian fintech companies now based there, including 59 percent in Sydney. Shenzhen is also developing the fintech industry, with the Futian District Government planning to spend 10 million yuan (US$1.47 million) a year to support the application of fintech.
