Fathers are the foundation of families, they give them identity and

meaning in both life and in death. On this day when we stop the frenetic

pace of life to honor and remember fathers, we have an opportunity to

reflect on what really matters most in our lives. They are a gift to be

received and we should thank them. But who exactly is a Father?

He is first a man who cares about his children. Whether or not the

children are his biological offspring does not matter. The point is that all

children belong to God and because they belong to God, a real father

feels they belong to him. A real father is a man who recognizes his role

in the larger human family and cares about his children, just as God

does.

Secondly, a father is a man who is committed to children. To care

about someone is nothing but an emotion until and unless it becomes a

commitment to that someone. The truth that God cares about His children

would not mean very much unless we could also say God is involved in

the lives of His children. The first truth (God cares about us) is certainly

reassuring, but it is the second truth (God is involved) that we call salva-

tion. God not only cares about us; He has also committed all that He is

and all that He has to our best interest: "Yes, God so loved the world

that He gave His only Son, that whoever believes in Him may not die but

may have eternal life" (John 3:16). It is this commitment which makes Him

truly "Our Father." It is this kind of commitment which makes any man a

real father.

Istotę ojcostwa moŜna zrozumieć raczej dzięki milczeniu niŜ za po-

mocą słów, a samo słowo "ojcostwo" jest nasycone duchem skupienia (M.

Légaut). Ojcostwo jest dawaniem Ŝycia, jest stwarzaniem na podobi-

eństwo samego Stwórcy. Rodząc Ŝycie męŜczyzna i kobieta spełniają

BoŜe wezwanie: Bądźcie płodni i rozmnaŜajcie się, abyście zaludnili

ziemię (Rdz 1, 28) i w ten sposób uczestniczą w stwórczej mocy

samego Boga. Zrodzone Ŝycie nie naleŜy do nich. NaleŜy do Boga.

MęŜczyzna, który daje Ŝycie dziecku, przedłuŜa swoje Ŝycie i

dlatego w jakimś sensie rodzi takŜe samego siebie. Nie tylko więc

dziecko, syn odkrywa siebie w ojcu, ale takŜe i ojciec odkrywa siebie

w synu. Poprzez swoje dziecko ojciec zaczyna pełniej rozumieć zasad-

niczy cel i sens swojego Ŝycia. Stąd teŜ więź ojca z dzieckiem naznac-

zona jest takŜe wymiarem religijnym.

Odkrycie, poznanie siebie w swoim dziecku jest odbiciem, od-

blaskiem tajemnicy Trójcy Świętej w człowieku. To w łonie Trójcy

Świętej Syn odwiecznie poznaje, odkrywa siebie w Ojcu, a Ojciec

poznaje siebie w swoim Synu. Św. Jan powie, Ŝe Boga nikt nigdy nie

widział, Ten Jednorodzony Bóg, który jest w łonie Ojca, [o Nim] pouczył

(J 1,18). Jako owoc tego wzajemnego poznania Ojca i Syna rodzi się

trzecia Osoba Trójcy Świętej - Duch Święty. Jest On odwieczną Miło-

ścią łączącą Ich Obu.

JeŜeli ojcostwo ma być przeŜywane w całej jego głębi, nie moŜe

być kierowane jedynie odruchem instynktu. Winno być naznaczone

wymiarem duchowym. Brak docierania przez męŜczyznę do tajemnicy

ludzkiego istnienia sprawia nieraz, iŜ jego ojcostwo zamyka się w

przypadkowym akcie fizycznym, za który nie chce ponosić pełnej

odpowiedzialności.

Ojcostwo jest więc wielkim wyzwaniem dla męŜczyzny. JeŜeli

pragnie je przeŜywać autentycznie, winien docierać do najgłębszych

korzeni swojego istnienia - do Boga.

„Ecce Homo”-„Oto człowiek” (J 19,5): to kon-

templacja Boga w bliźnim, który cierpi. A my, jak

patrzymy na Boga i drugiego człowieka? Jakie

oblicze dostrzegamy w cierpiącym bracie? Czy w

ogóle je dostrzegamy? Kontemplacja ma nas do-

prowadzić do udzielenia odpowiedzi na pytanie,

kim jest Jezus Chrystus dla mnie, kim ja jestem dla

Niego oraz kim jest dla mnie drugi człowiek.

W dzisiejszej Ewangelii Jezus stawia uczniom

pytanie „kim jestem?”. Piotr odwaŜył się na od-

powiedź: Jesteś „Mesjaszem BoŜym”. Odpowiedź

jasna, ale ludzki rozum tu nie wystarcza, bo Mistrz

jest równieŜ „Synem Człowieczym”. Wejście w mis-

terium Boga wymaga serca oczyszczonego z obie-

gowych wyobraŜeń o Nim. Wymaga wewnętrznej

ciszy, miejsca na osobności, a przede wszystkim

szczerej i zaŜyłej modlitwy.

Rozmowa, jaka toczy się pomiędzy Jezusem, a

Jego uczniami składa się z dwóch pytań. Pierwsze

jest ogólne i odnosi się do otoczenia. Drugie,

bardziej osobiste, skierowane jest do samych uc-

zniów.

Większość z nas Ŝyje wśród ludzi, którzy

uwaŜają się za chrześcijan. Zostaliśmy w

dzieciństwie ochrzczeni, w wieku szkolnym przys-

tąpiliśmy do pierwszej Komunii świętej, byliśmy u

bierzmowania. W tamtym okresie znaczącą rolę w

kształtowaniu naszej wiary odegrało otoczenie.

Byli to rodzice, najbliŜsi krewni, katecheci. To od

nich usłyszeliśmy o Jezusie.

Jednak, aby tak naprawdę stać się uczniem

Chrystusa, trzeba odpowiedzieć sobie na to samo

pytanie, jakie postawił On Apostołom: A wy za

kogo Mnie uwaŜacie? Tutaj juŜ nie wystarczy samo

chrześcijańskie wychowanie i wiedza katechiz-

mowa.

W Ŝyciu kaŜdego człowieka nadchodzi chwila,

gdy staje on przed podobnym pytaniem. Być

moŜe, będzie to miało miejsce w sytuacji krańcowej

albo wtedy, gdy będziemy musieli dokonać

waŜnego moralnego wyboru.MoŜliwe, Ŝe nasza

odpowiedź doprowadzi do utraty popularności i

aprobaty w otoczeniu, a nasze konto bankowe nie

wzrośnie. Trzeba jednak pamiętać o tym, Ŝe Jezus

nie obiecuje tym, którzy chcą pójść za Nim,

łatwego Ŝycia. Obiecuje krzyŜ. KrzyŜ jednak nie

jest juŜ narzędziem tortury, ale przynosi człowie-

kowi odkupienie i Ŝycie. Dlatego, jak zapewnia

Jezus, kaŜdy kto będzie miał odwagę wziąć krzyŜ

i opowiedzieć się za Nim, otrzyma w zamian Ŝycie

wieczne.

Who is Jesus for you? Many in Israel recognized Jesus as a

mighty man of God, even comparing him with the greatest of

the prophets. Peter, always quick to respond whenever Jesus

spoke, professed that Jesus was truly the Christ of God. No mor-

tal being could have revealed this to Peter, but only

God. Through the eyes of faith Peter grasped who Jesus truly

was. He was the first apostle to publicly recognize Jesus as the

Anointed One whom the Father consecrated and sent into the

world as Lord and Savior (Luke 2:11, Acts 2:36). Christ is the

Greek word for Messiah, the Hebrew word which is also trans-

lated as the Anointed One.

Why did Jesus command his disciples to be silent about his

identity as the anointed Son of God? They were, after all, ap-

pointed to proclaim the good news to everyone. Jesus knew that

they did not yet fully understand his mission and how he would

accomplish it. Cyril of Alexandria, a 5th century church father,

explains the reason for this silence:

There were things yet unfulfilled which must also be included

in their preaching about him. They must also proclaim the cross,

the passion, and the death in the flesh. They must preach the

resurrection of the dead, that great and truly glorious sign by

which testimony is borne him that the Emmanuel is truly God and

by nature the Son of God the Father. He utterly abolished death

and wiped out destruction. He robbed hell, and overthrew the

tyranny of the enemy. He took away the sin of the world,

opened the gates above to the dwellers upon earth, and united

earth to heaven. These things proved him to be, as I said, in truth

God. He commanded them, therefore, to guard the mystery by

a seasonable silence until the whole plan of the dispensation

should arrive at a suitable conclusion. [COMMENTARY ON LUKE,

HOMILY 49]

Jesus told his disciples that it was necessary for the Messiah

to suffer and die in order that God's work of redemption might

be accomplished. How startled the disciples were when they

heard this word. How different are God's thoughts and ways

from our thoughts and ways (Isaiah 55:8). Through humiliation,

suffering, and death on the cross Jesus broke the powers of sin

and death and won for us eternal life and freedom from the

slavery of sin and from the oppression of our enemy, Satan, the

father of lies and the deceiver of humankind.

If we want to share in Christ's victory, then we must also take

up our cross and follow him where he leads us. What is the

"cross" that you and I must take up each day? When my will

crosses with God's will, then his will must be done. To know Jesus

Christ is to know the power of his victory on the cross where he

defeated sin and conquered death through his resurrection. The

Holy Spirit gives each of us the gifts and strength we need to

live as sons and daughters of God. The Holy Spirit gives us faith

to know the Lord Jesus personally as our Redeemer, and the

power to live the gospel faithfully, and the courage to witness to

others the joy, truth, and freedom of the gospel. Who do you

say that Jesus is?
