JKP 415E/4 – INTERNATIONAL ORGANIZATIONS COURSE INSTRUCTOR: DR. NORRAIHAN ZAKARIA INTRODUCTION This course highlights international organizations as vital players in international relations. It discusses the roles and functions of international organizations and their implications to international politics. The course examines the features, backgrounds and objectives of international organizations. To illustrate their dynamic roles and functions in international scenes, one main organization, the United Nations, is discussed. Other major international organizations are also analyzed constructively to boost students’ understanding of the effectiveness of international organizations in international politics. This is viewed from both theoretical and practical lenses. The course demands students to be attentive with current international news. Apart from reading the supplied materials, you are expected to make your own references to other reading materials (i.e. newspapers, journals, reliable internet sources etc.) You are also strongly encouraged to be participative in the e-learning portal forum discussions activities. Upon completing this course, you should be able to grasp the objectives, structures, functions, roles and types of international organizations. Moreover, you should be able to analyze the reasons for the behaviors of certain international organizations by utilizing the four main theories. READING GUIDE This course uses Kelly-Kate S. Pease’s International Organizations: Perspectives on Governance in the Twenty-First Century (2008), as the basic textbook. The book is divided into four main themes: i. Theme 1 – Introduction Under this theme, an overview of prior studies and the ‘nuts’ and ‘bolts’

of international organizations are discussed. ii. Theme 2 – Approaches

Theme 2 analyzes the main approaches (Realism & Liberalism) and the critical approaches (Marxism & Feminism).

iii. Theme 3 – Selected Issues

The areas of discussion under this theme focus on the issues of international & regional securities; trade; development; environment; social & humanitarian.

iv. Theme 4 – Global Governance

This theme concludes the discussion of international organizations by examining the global governance from four theoretical views.

INTENSIVE COURSE The intensive course will be conducted from the 29th January – 11th February 2012. Attendance during intensive course is compulsory. ASSESSMENT Students are assessed based on: I. COURSEWORK (40%) (A) FIRST COMPONENT– ESSAY WRITING (15%) Choose ONE article from the list below:

INSTRUCTION 1. After selecting one of the articles listed above, read and

understand the argument presented by the author. Then, write a 15 – 20 page essay (inclusive of bibliography). The essay should consist of two components:

a) A discussion on the author’s main argument(s); and b) A discussion on your opinion on the presented argument(s).

Your opinion should incorporate at least one theory/approach discussed in this course)

2. The essay should be typed-written, double-spaced, in font size 12

and printed with black ink. 3. The essay can be written in Bahasa Malaysia or English. 4. Submit your essay with a cover page that can be downloaded from

the e-tugasan website. 5. The deadline of submitting your essay is on/before 1st December

2011. No additional time will be given to complete this assignment. 6. Any requests to hand in the assignment beyond the deadline

will not be entertained. Late essay will be awarded an F grade. You are advised to plan wisely in ensuring your assignment reaches PPPJJ on time.

7. You are encouraged to check the receipt of your assignment at e-

tugasan or by calling PPPJJ. WARNING

There is no compromise towards plagiarism. Refer to the University and University College Act 1971 for further explanation. Disciplinary action can be taken against students who commit plagiarism. Any essays which are proven to be not original will automatically be awarded an F grade.

Participation in e-forum and intensive course activities constitute 5% of the total coursework grade.
