COURSE SYLLABUS Course Title: Workshop in Music Notation Course #: X 482.83 Reg. #248045 Units: 4

Quarter/Yr: Summer 2014 Day/Time: Tuesday 7 – 10pm Dates: 6/24 – 9/09 Location: B17 Westwood Center Instructor: Mark Hollingsworth Instructor contact: TBA Course Description: Using Sibelius music notation software on your own laptop, this hands-on workshop helps you master the skills related to the written language of music. In a professional or semi-professional environment, nothing affects the way music is first performed more than the way it appears on the written page. Strong music copying skills save hours of studio and rehearsal time as well as immediately give you credibility with the musicians who interpret your musical creations. Topics include creating scores and vocal lead sheets, standards of notation, instrument transpositions, C-clefs and percussion staves, and phrasing and articulation specific to particular instruments including vocals, percussion, strings and harp. Note: Students must bring their own Mac or PC laptop with a minimum of 5 GB of free space, a power adapter, with Sibelius 7 installed. It is also suggested that students bring headphones as well as either a separate 18 Key Numeric Keypad or a separate full size computer keyboard to access important shortcuts. It is required that students use Sibelius 7 (educational pricing available). Prerequisite: Basic computer proficiency and ability to read music. Enrollment limited; early enrollment advised. Goals & Objectives: Upon successful completion of this course, students will have been introduced to: 1. Standards and practices of notation for a wide variety of instruments 2. Creation of high-quality lead-sheets and scores and session ready parts 3. Staff, clef and note-head types for specific instruments and purposes 4. Composition and orchestration techniques using Sibelius 5. Transcribing and proofing music to professional standards

GRADING Grading Policy: Final grades will be based upon attendance/participation, homework and in-class assignments. Following is the point distribution for the final grade: Attendance/Participation (10 points per class) 120 Homework Assignments (8 @ 100 points each) 800 In-class assignments for grade (2 @ 40 points each) 80 ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Total Points Possible: 1000 Attendance: Students are expected to attend class each week. There will be no makeup lessons for any reason. Students who miss class are responsible for acquiring and learning the materials that they have missed. Absences may be excused by the instructor for serious reasons only. Points will be deducted for every unexcused absence (10 points per class period missed). Partial points may be deducted for tardiness and being underprepared (see “participation”). Participation: Students are expected to keep up with the pace of the class. They are expected to practice all skills learned, and to be ready to use those skills at the next class period. Failure to keep up with the pace of the class will result in a lowered attendance/participation grade. Final grades (for the 12 weeks) will be based on the following percentages: A 89.5 - 100 B 79.5 - 89.49 C 69.5 - 79.49 D 59.5 - 69.49 F 59.49 and below A grade of ‘C’ or better is considered a passing grade. Certificate students must take 400 level courses for a grade. Please note that ALL COURSE GRADES ARE FINAL. Information about Incompletes: The interim grade Incomplete may be assigned when a student's work is of passing quality, but a small portion of the course requirements is incomplete for good cause (e.g. illness or other serious problem). It is the student’s responsibility to discuss with the instructor the possibility of receiving an “I” grade as opposed to a non-passing grade. The student is entitled to replace this grade by a passing grade and to receive unit credit provided they complete the remaining coursework satisfactorily, under the supervision of and in a time

frame determined by the instructor in charge, but in no case later than the end of the next academic quarter. At that time, the Registrar will cause all remaining Incompletes to lapse to the grade "F". Note: Receiving an “I” does not entitle a student to retake all or any part of the course at a later date. Student Behavior involving cheating, copying other’s work, and plagiarism are not tolerated and will result in disciplinary action. Students are responsible for being familiar with the information on Student Conduct in the General Information Section of the UCLA Extension Catalog or on the website at www.uclaextension.edu If you have any difficulty with any aspect of this class, if you would like to schedule an appointment with me, if you have a disability and would like to discuss academic accommodation, or if you must miss a class, please contact me at the email address provided at the top of this syllabus.
