Head Coach: Josey Stender, Memphis ‘01 (Sixth Season)

The fall portion of the 2010-11 season was a combination of great individual performances, and for the first time in Cowgirl history, each of the golfers posted a scoring average under 80.

Coach Josey Stender, now in her sixth year at the helm, has high expectations heading into the spring portion of the season.

"We will face the most competitive spring schedule in Cowgirl Golf history," Stender said. "It is a credit to our former and current players who put us in the position to be competitive against the nation's top-25 teams each week. We have set lofty but realistic goals for the spring and I believe this group has

the talent and potential to accomplish them."

Her team spent the offseason working on fundamentals, improving its short game and focus, both on and off the course.

But that's not to say there weren't bright spots, particularly with several players stepping up at different times in the fall.

"Each player progressed with their mental game, mechanics and we had great work ethic as a team," Stender said. "It was promising that during any given round, any player could lead the team.

"This is such a talented, hardworking group and we

have great chemistry so I believe it is just a matter of time before we start breaking records again."

Senior Molly Black led the charge for the Cowgirls, setting the pace for Wyoming in stroke average (77) and season stroke total (924 over 12 rounds).

"Molly has continued to improve each year as a Cowgirl because she has a true understanding of her strengths and weaknesses," Stender said. "Molly's work ethic in the classroom and on the golf course has set an example of how to reach her goals. We will be looking to her consistency on the golf course as a scorer and a team leader."

As the lone senior on the roster, Black's leadership on the course will be counted on as she takes the younger golfers under her wing.

Junior Juanita Rico stepped her game up in the fall, and tied with Black for the best individual finishes for Wyoming in two tournaments. Rico and Black finished tied for 56th in the Ptarmigan/Ram Fall Classic, each shooting 229(+13) over three rounds. They also finished tied for 14th in the Colorado/Heather Farr Memorial, shooting 231(+15).

Rico's low round of the season was 72(E), and her average (77.6) was second on the team.

"Juanita has been a consistent contributor to our team success since she set foot on campus," the coach said. "She has the confidence and ability to score very low once she is in a groove. I believe she will progress to scoring consistently low because she possesses a great temperament and calmness on the course.

"Juanita and Molly are on pace to have one of the lowest scoring averages in Cowgirl golf history."

Two sophomores showed their growth and improvement on the links as Taylor Smalley and Dana Zamprelli each experienced success in the fall.

Zamprelli had an up-and-down fall, but her potential is evident. She had the team's low round score of the fall season, shooting a 71(-1) at the CU/Heather Farr Memorial. Over 12 rounds, she averaged 78.5 strokes per round.

Smalley played in two events for Wyoming this fall. Her best finish came at the New Mexico/Dick McGuire Invitational, in which she shot 233(+13) to finish tied for 52nd. She hopes to improve her scores in the spring to help bolster the depth of the Cowgirls.

"Dana and Taylor are hard-working, true athletes and competitors," Stender said. "They both have proven they have the ability to make a lot of birdies because of their length off the tee. We have been working on capitalizing on their athleticism and increasing their confidence in decision-making."

After taking a year off to heal and improve her game, redshirt junior Jenna Zamprelli, Dana's older sister, had some shining moments in the fall.

Jenna had the team-high finish for Wyoming in the Portland State/Oregon State Invitational, tying for 26th with a 231(+15).

"Jenna has the most unlimited potential on the team, due to the fact she has continued to battle injuries throughout her career," Stender said. "Like Dana and Taylor, she is a tremendous athlete and has worked very hard to get back to competitive form, both mentally and physically. She will be competing this spring coming off two knee surgeries in one year, so it will be exciting to see her perform.

Three freshmen joined in the mix for Wyoming in Emily Wood, Stacey Blunt and Kristen Jensen. Wood and Blunt played in three tournaments each in the fall and their season statistics were nearly identical. Both averaged a 79.6 stroke average and both had a low round of 73(+1). Jensen did not compete in the fall.

"Emily and Stacey have been wonderful additions to the program," Stender said. "Both are very coachable, hard-working and team-oriented. Their talent level has allowed them to adapt to the college game and contribute right away. I foresee a great spring for both of them if they continue to work toward accomplishing their goals and become more consistent."

Men’s Outlookrecorded seven career top-25 finishes and carried the Cowboys third best stroke average in the fall, a 75.85. He is a hard worker for the Cowboys and will provide excellent senior leadership.

Senior Gabe Maier Over the past four seasons Maier has steadily become the Cowboys’ standout golfer. Maier had an excellent fall to begin this season and placed in the top-20 in all five tournaments. He carried the Cowboys best stroke average during the fall of 72.23, which was good enough for the seventh best in the MWC. He is a steady performer for the ’Pokes with 22 career top-25 finishes including six top-10 finishes. In the fall of 2009 Maier became the first Cowboy to win an event since 2004 by winning the Wyoming Desert Intercollegiate.

Redshirt Junior Michael May After redshirting last season, May came out and performed very well for the Cowboys during the fall of 2010. He played in all five tournaments and recorded one top-25 finish. He also recorded the Cowboys fourth best round of 72 (E) during the fall season. May used his redshirt year to steadily improve his game and will provide leadership both this season and next with his vast experience.

Redshirt Freshman Eric Parish Parish joined the Cowboy program last spring after winning a walk-on tournament. He played in his first tournament as a Cowboy in the fall of this season and earned excellent experience playing at the college level. Parish is a Wyoming native who will add excellent depth to the Cowboy roster and push the members of the team above him.

Junior Casey Ruff Ruff adds excellent depth to the Cowboy roster, having played in nine of the Cowboys 11 tournaments last season. He steadily progressed during the 2009-10 season recording his best finish at the 2010 MWC Championships. He had an up-and-down fall season playing in three of the five UW tournaments. Ruff has a lot of experience for the Cowboys playing a total of 60 rounds dating back to his freshman season. He will bring that experience along with an excellent work ethic to give the Cowboys depth for their five-man tournament roster.

Freshman Eddie Stewart A Wyoming native, Stewart joins the Cowboys for the spring semester after attending Pacific University in the fall. An all-state and all-conference performer at Jackson Hole High School, Stewart will redshirt this spring.

Senior Zach Zaremba Zaremba has proven himself as one of the Cowboys steadiest performers recording seven top-25 finishes in his Cowboy career. He has played in all 41 events dating back to his freshman season. This fall Zaremba recorded two under par rounds but was unable to earn a top-25 finish. He will be looking to improve on his fall and finish his Cowboy career with more top finishes. During the 2009-10 season he recorded five top-25 finishes, as well as three top-15 finishes. His best rounds of the season came back-to-back at the Air Force Falcon Invite when he shot 69 (-3) twice. He carried the Cowboys second best stroke average last season of 73.73.

The Cowboy golf team enters the 2011 spring season looking to use an experienced group of players to compete well in the seven events they are scheduled to play, and to finish the season strong in the always-competitive Mountain West Conference. They have the season-long goal of ending the year competing on the NCAA platform.

The team is a senior-laden group with Gabe Maier, Phil Henzlik and Zach Zaremba all entering their last year of eligibility.. Adding to that experience will be juniors Casey Ruff and Michael May, as well as

sophomore Clinton Boutelle, who have all gained a great deal of experience during their careers. Jake Hedge, Eric Parish and Eddie Stewart will all compete as freshmen.

“I really like this team, they are a great group of young men,” UW Director of Golf Joe Jensen said. “We have worked hard and put a lot of time and effort into building up to this season. We have a lot of experience and depth, but need to step up and play the way we are capable of playing. We want to be consistent and play well in all seven events, while working toward our goal of competing in NCAA Regionals.”

The ’Pokes will look to the three seniors to lead the way this spring. Maier, Henzlik and Zaremba have matured together over the last three seasons, placing in the top-25 a combined 38 times during their careers. Maier is the key to the Cowboys success as he has recorded 22 of those 38 top-25 finishes. Maier also has finished in the top-10 of an event six times over the past two seasons, while finishing in the top-

five four times during those six events. The best of Maier’s top-five finishes came at last season’s UW Desert Intercollegiate when he placed first with a three round total of 208 (-8). Maier also became the first UW golfer since 2002 to qualify for an NCAA Regional Tournament, doing so in 2010.

Adding to the Cowboy lineup this spring will be sophomore Clinton Boutelle, who has competed in sixteen consecutive tournaments since redshirting during the 2008-09 season. Boutelle carried the Cowboys’ second best stroke average (75.33) thorough this past fall season. Michael May redshirted last season and looks to use his gained maturity to contribute some low numbers to the Cowboys’ team totals this season. He has a lot of experience and has played in 30 college events during his career. In addition, junior Casey Ruff played in nine tournaments during the 2009-10 season and played in three of the five tournaments this past fall.

The Cowboys enjoyed success during this past fall season, placing in the top ten three times including two top-six finishes. Wyoming finished sixth at the Air Force Falcon Invite, which included the lowest team round of the fall at 287 (-1). Their next best finish came at the Nevada Wolf Pack Classic where they placed sixth in a competitive field.

Wyoming will play in seven events over the spring including playing host to two. The Cowboys will open the spring by hosting the Wyoming Desert Intercollegiate at the Classic Club in Palm Desert, Calif. on Feb. 26-27. They will then compete in the Denver Desert Shootout in Goodyear, Ariz., the Arizona National Invitational Tournament in March followed by the San Diego State Barona Collegiate Cup. UW will host the Cowboy Classic in Scottsdale, Ariz. at Talking Stick Golf Club on April 4-5. The Cowboys will conclude their spring season at the BYU Cougar Classic on April 15-16, before traveling to the Mountain West Conference Championship in Tucson, Ariz. on May 5.

“We did some good things this past fall, but also took a couple of steps backward,” Jensen added. “However, I am pleased with how we improved and closed out the fall with our best finish at a very competitive Nevada Wolf Pack Classic. The guys have worked hard during the winter break and are ready to get back at it. We are going to go out every day and play hard and leave it all on the course. We are excited to see what this group can accomplish this spring.”

The following is a look at the 2010-11 Cowboy golf roster:

Sophomore Clinton Boutelle Boutelle has proven himself as an excellent young talent for the Cowboys. Over the past two seasons he has been a steady performer for UW. During the fall of 2010, he carried the second best stroke average on the team, a 75.33. Last season Boutelle finished in the top-25 of four events, while recording the fourth best finish by a freshman at the 2010 MWC Championships. Boutelle also played in the second most rounds of any freshman in the MWC.

Senior Phil Henzlik Henzlik will be looking to conclude his already excellent Cowboy career with a strong spring. He had an up and down junior season, but came back this fall to place in the top-25 in two tournaments. Henzlik has

JOE JENSENDirector of UW Men’s & Women’s GolfHead Cowboy Coach

The Wyoming Cowboy golf program is in its' 10th season under the direction of Joe Jensen. In addition to serving as the head coach of the men’s golf program, Jensen is in his sixth year as Director of UW Men’s & Women’s Golf.

Jensen has directed the Cowboy golf program during one of the most competitive eras in UW's 70-year men's golf history. Under Jensen's direction the Cowboys have set school records for low individual round and event score, as well as low team round and event score.

The 2009-10 season was a banner year for the Cowboys as they sent their fi rst golfer to the NCAA Regional Tournament since 2002, as well as being named a Golf Coaches Association of America All-Academic team. Cowboy Gabe Maier earned UW's fi rst NCAA Regional Tournament berth since 2002 with his 12th place fi nish at the Mountain West Conference Championship.

Also during the 2009-10 season the Cowboys were named a GCAA All-Academic Team with a combined GPA of 3.18. Cowboy golfers Phil Henzlik, Maier, Zach Zaremba and Casey Ruff were all named Academic All-MWC. Henzlik and Ruff also earned MWC Scholar-Athlete Awards.

In addition to the numerous school records, the Wyoming golf program added two individual tournament championships in 2009. Cowgirl Jonelle Martinez won the 2009 Mountain West Conference Championship and Cowboy Gabe Maier won the 2009 University of Wyoming Desert Intercollegiate.

A native of Lander, Wyo. and a former member of the UW golf team, Jensen earned his bachelor’s degree in arts and sciences from the University of Wyoming in 1998 and completed his MBA at UW in December of 2006.

In addition to his coaching duties, Jensen manages and is the head golf professional at Glenn “Red” Jacoby Golf Club at the University of Wyoming. Jensen, 39 (born April 10, 1970) was hired as the Cowboy golf coach on Dec. 7, 2001 and named Director of Wyoming Golf on Aug. 18, 2005.

“I’m excited about my role as director of both Wyoming Golf programs,” Jensen said. “We are working hard and I’m pleased with the direction of both the men’s and women’s programs.

“It’s such a privilege to be a part of the Wyoming Athletics program and to bring student-athletes to UW and Laramie. I enjoy working at the school I graduated from, in my home state, and in a place where I have so many friends and family.”

Jensen was a member of the Cowboy golf team during the 1992-93 season, but turned professional in 1993, and became an assistant golf pro at the Jacoby Golf Club. During his six years in that position, he was responsible for the daily operation of the course. His duties also included serving as an assistant coach with the golf team.

In 1999, Jensen moved to the Pelican Lakes Golf and Country Club in Windsor, Colo., where he was a golf assistant. There he assisted in the daily operation of the golf course and coordinated a number of golf tournaments. He also taught group and junior golf lessons. In addition to his golf club duties, he was a fi nancial representative for Northwestern Mutual Financial Network and later worked for the Bank of Colorado/Raymond James Financial Services in Fort Collins, Colo.

He has organized the Wyoming-CSU Border Fore Golf Tournament since 2001, as well as the Old Baldy Cowboy Golf Classic. Proceeds from these events are given to charity and used as fundraisers for UW Athletics. Both tournaments have been established as annual events.

In 2003, Jensen initiated the UW/Cleveland Golf Cowboy Classic collegiate tournament. The event is held each spring in Scottsdale, Ariz., and hosts many of the top college golf programs in the country. In 2005 Jensen’s Cowboy squad placed second of 20 teams in the event.

In 2007, the Cowgirls hosted the fi rst annual Cowgirl Classic during the same week as the men's event. The Cowgirls' event will be held for the fourth consecutive season during the spring of 2010 at the Ocotillo Golf Club in Chandler, Ariz.

In addition to the Cowboy and Cowgirl Classics held each spring in the Phoenix area, the Cowboys began hosting a fall tournament in 2008. The second annual Wyoming Desert Intercollegiate was held on Oct. 5-6, 2009 at the Classic Club in Palm Desert, Calif. The Classic Club is the host course of the PGA's Bob Hope Chrysler Classic.

Jensen’s teams annually excel in the classroom, as evident in 2005 and 2006 when Cowboy golfer Dan Silva was named a Cleveland Golf All-America Scholar by the GCAA in back-to-back years.

During his fi rst two seasons as head coach, Jensen coached All-Southwest Region selection Mike Urbatchka in 2002 and All-America Scholar honoree Kurt Kowaluk in 2003. His teams have also been recognized for their efforts off of the course by winning the Athletics Director Award two times. The annual award, which is based on excellence in athletics, team GPA and community service, was given to the Cowboy golf team in 2001-02 and 2002-03.

In the summer of 2009, Jensen was involved in the Palmer Cup, which is college golf's version of the Ryder Cup. The event, which pits 10 American college players against 10 college players from Europe, was played at Cherry Hills Country Club in Denver, Colo. For his efforts with the Palmer Cup, Jensen was recognized by the Golf Coaches Association of America this past December.

Active within the community, Jensen is currently on the University of Wyoming Academic Planning Committee. He is also Chairman of the Board of the UW First Tee Chapter, a nationally recognized junior golf program primarily supported by the PGA and USTA with a curriculum of life skills and golf skills. Jensen was instrumental in organizing UW's First Tee program and served as the chapter's executive director for a year.

Wyoming Coaching Staff

JOSEY STENDERAsst. Director of Wyoming GolfHead Cowgirl Coach

Josey Stender enters her sixth year with the University of Wyoming Cowgirl golf program. Stender is the head coach of the Cowgirls, and also has been the assistant director of Wyoming golf since 2005.

The Cowgirl program has grown in leaps and bounds on the course during Stender's tenure and has continued its tradition of success in the academic realm. The Cowgirls also picked up their fi rst team win in 10 years at the Bronco Fall Invitational in 2009.

Stender's list of achievements while directing the Cowgirls include setting school records for individual low round and event score, as well as team all-time marks for team low round and 54-hole event total. In the past three years, the Cowgirls have rewritten the low team round mark 10 times. Much of the success comes from Stender's coaching philosophy, which exemplifi es her competitive spirit.

"I value that they have a great college experience on and off the course," she said of her athletes. "I look for well-rounded student-athletes who are willing to work hard to accomplish their goals."

UW had a top-fi ve individual fi nish at the 2006 Mountain West Conference Championship, while 15 Cowgirls have been named Academic All-MWC and eight have been awarded All-American Scholar honors during Stender's tenure.

The coach takes pride in the efforts of her athletes while at UW, which include the accomplishments of both current and former golfers. Stender coached former Cowgirl Jonelle Martinez, who was one of the most accomplished athletes the UW golf program had seen in some time. Martinez won the individual MWC conference title in 2009 and was named to the First Team All-Conference squad as well, carrying a 77.78 stroke average throughout the year.

Senior Molly Black also has benefi tted from the tutelage of Stender, posting the all-time low round of 68(-4) in the 2009 Ptarmigan/Ram Fall Classic. She worked her way to the lowest round average in the fall 2010 season, averaging 77 strokes per 18 holes.

Stender also overcame another huge obstacle in Cowgirl history, beating BYU at the MWC Conference Championships in the spring of 2010. It was the fi rst time in MWC history that the Cowgirls were able to beat the Cougars in the conference event.

Stender came to UW from Boise, Idaho, where she had been the communications director for the Idaho Golf Association. A collegiate golfer at the University of Memphis from 1998-2003, she served as a graduate assistant intern in the fall of 2003. Formerly

Josey Edwards, she married Jeff Stender on Aug. 20, 2005. Josey and Jeff, the assistant principal at Laramie Junior High, have a son named Griffi n, 2, and twins Jovee and Porter, 7 months.

The Wyoming's men's and women's golf programs were restructured in 2005, as Joe Jensen was elevated from his position of head men's coach and was named director of both the UW men's and women's programs. Jensen remains the Cowboy head coach and oversees all aspects of Wyoming's golf teams, while Stender primarily works with the UW women's squad but also serves as the assistant director under Jensen. As the assistant director, Stender is involved in multiple aspects of Wyoming golf, including outreach, recruiting, practice, putting together the home events hosted by both teams and scheduling with both squads.

"She's always striving to get better," Jensen said. "We're trying to compete on a national level. I think that's our expectation and she's on board with that. She just does an amazing job.

"It's how she connects with the players and her honesty. It's her coaching style. She doesn't say too much, but she says enough. Our players are very fortunate. She just has a great way of adapting to the players and the players trust her."

Stender earned her bachelor's degree in education, with an emphasis on sports and leisure studies/sports management from Memphis in 2001,

and then earned her Master's of Science in sports and leisure commerce from Memphis in 2004. An accomplished student, she received numerous academic honors during her playing career, including being named to the National Golf Coaches Association All-Scholar Athlete team three times; 1999-2000, 2001-02 and 2002-03.

Stender, 30, originally is from Idaho, and there, had a successful amateur golf career.

She won three state high school titles and earned the 1999 Idaho Women's Amateur Championship, as well as being named the Rocky Mountain PGA Female Amateur Golfer of the Year that same year. She was a member of the USGA Idaho State Team in 2003, and was a participant at the U.S. Women's Amateur Public Links Championship in 2004. Stender was runner-up in the 2001 Pacifi c Northwest Golf Association Women's Amateur Championship.

She currently is an apprentice for the LPGA Teaching and Club Professional Division.

Student-Athlete Academics The University of Wyoming recognizes the special needs of today’s Division I student-athlete and has made the commitment to address those needs with a comprehensive counseling program. In addition to the demands of being a student at the University of Wyoming, our student-athletes must also deal with the extra pressures associated with participating athletically in the most competi-tive major college division in the country. The Athletic-Academic Counseling Office offers programs designed to assist each student-athlete in achieving their athletic and academic goals. This office is staffed by three full-time counselors, and one full time administrative assistant. The entire staff is dedicated to achieving the program goal of providing comprehensive services to ensure a successful student-athlete experience -- academically, personally, vocationally and athletically. The University of Wyoming’s Athletics Counseling Office offers a full range of services in the following four areas:

1. Academic Counseling The core of our academic-support services is the tutorial and mentor program. A qualified staff of tutors and mentors assist students in clarifying their study material and, in the case of travel, help students catch up on what material was missed. In addition to the tutorial program, attention is given to each individual in the development of their class schedule. All UW student-athletes must take a minimum of twelve hours of classes each semester which directly apply to their chosen degree, and appropriate scheduling is a critical priority. Study skills assistance is available for those who need special help in areas including test preparation, note taking and time-management techniques. Finally, each student-athlete’s academic progress is closely monitored during the semester for such things as attendance, current grade and class participation. Steps are taken to address deficiencies identified by student-athlete progress reports on an individual basis. 2. Personal Counseling College life can be a stressful, as well as, rewarding experience. The additional pressures and stress of being a student-athlete can create problems which may inhibit the effectiveness of the individual in all aspects of life. Issues involving family, friends, school or sport may have a serious impact on the individual and these issues can be addressed with the help of the professional counseling that is available to each student-athlete.3. Career Counseling The purpose of obtaining a college education is to prepare an individual for meaningful employment following graduation. Needless to say, the act of choosing a useful major is indeed a challenging task considering the multitude of possibilities. Career counseling is available to assist student-athletes in the very important process of selecting a major that will lead to a desired career.4. Personal Growth and Development This component of the student-athlete counseling program consists of presentations and workshops that address the needs and concerns of today’s student-athletes. Presentations feature issues such as Drugs/Alcohol Abuse, Becoming Your Personal Best, Sexual Awareness and Responsibility and Cultural Diversity. Our goal is to provide student-athletes with information that allows them to make informed choices about their personal behavior.

Tradition of SuccessThe University of Wyoming men’s and women’s golf teams have established an outstanding tradition of success, both on the golf course and

in the classroom. That tradition continues to grow with the current Cowboy and Cowgirl squads, as both the men’s and women’s teams have put their names

and marks in the record books. In the spring of 2009, senior Jonelle Martinez became the second Cowgirl to win an individual Mountain West Conference Championship.

She joined Jordan Lintz, who won the MWC’s inaugural title in 2000. In the fi rst tournament of the fall of 2009, junior Molly Black set the UW record for lowest tournament score and lowest round. At the Ptarmigan Ram Fall Classic, her three-round total of 215 (-1) and second round 68 (-4) were both tops in Cowgirl history.

In the fall of 2008, the Cowgirls set the UW record for low team round score and low team event score. Both happened at the CU/Heather Farr Memorial in Broomfi eld, Colo. In the fi nal round the Cowgirls shot a team 291 (+3), which gave them a tournament 891 (+27). In the past three years the Cowgirls have re-written the low team round record ten different times.

As for the Cowboys, junior Gabe Maier won the 92-man UW Desert Intercollegiate during the fall of 2009. That marked the fi rst individual tournament win for a Cowboy since 2004. His three-round score of 208 (-8) matched the second best event score in Wyoming history. Fellow junior Zach Zaremba wrote his name in the record books for his fi fth best individual round and fi fth best event score during the 2008-09 season. He fi nished the fi nal round of the 2008 Air Force Falcon Invitational with his personal best 67 (-5) and fi nished in fourth-place with a total 210 (-6).

The Wyoming men’s team has captured seven tournament titles during the past 14 seasons, a team runner-up fi nish at the 2005 Cowboy Classic and produced an All-American in 1992, Dave McCleave. Nine Academic All-American Scholars have come out of the Cowboy program, most recently Dan Silva in 2005 and 2006. The most recent Cowboy to qualify for the NCAA West Regional Tournament was Mike Urbatchka in 2002. Urbatchka was also named to the PING All-Southwest Region team -- one of only 15 players selected in the southwest region.

In all, the Cowgirls have had 19 student-athletes earn Academic All-American Scholar honors. In 2007 three graduating seniors, Kaelee Aegerter, Lindsey Bauknecht and Laura Mengelkamp, each earned the honor.

Former women’s team member Jessica Mellinger received one of the most prestigious academic honors a college student can achieve when she was selected as a Rhodes Scholar in December of 1999. Out of 930 applicants in the United States that year, Mellinger was one of 32 college students nationally to be selected for a Rhodes Scholarship. She went on to study English at Oxford University in England.

Whether it be on the fi eld of competition or in the academic arena, the Wyoming men’s and women’s golf teams have distinguished themselves as being among the best programs in collegiate golf.

More Than GolfStrength and Conditioning

Golf is a game where power meets control, and flexibility and balance are the keys to coordinating body movements. The strength and conditioning program for Wyoming's Cowboy and Cowgirl Golf teams addresses these areas while reducing the risk of injury in a highly repetitive sport. Each athlete receives a program that is designed to address the needs of the game. Exercises are chosen based on their ability to improve balance, core strength, power, flexibility, and total body strength. Focus is given to balancing the muscular strength and flexibility in all important areas of the body. Each lifting session is guided by a certified and trained coach to ensure proper execution and intensity.

The mission of the University of Wyoming Strength and Conditioning program is to enhance the collegiate experience of each athlete both physically and mentally. This should be accomplished through scientific training methods, as well as through the promotion of a healthy training environment.

The Rochelle Athletic Center Weight Room serves as the main training facility for the majority of the Wyoming varsity athletes. The Fieldhouse weight room is also used by UW teams. This facility is used throughout the year depending upon sport schedules. Strength and conditioning coach Josh Moen works directly with the men's and women's golf teams at UW.

The Mountain West ConferenceFrom its inception in 1999, the Mountain West Conference has been committed

to excellence in intercollegiate athletics, while promoting the academic missions of its member institutions. Progressive in its approach, the MWC continues to cultivate opportunities for student-athletes to compete at the highest level, while fostering academic achievement and sportsmanship. Now in its 12th year, the MWC has been assertive in its involvement with the NCAA governance structure and has taken a leadership role in the overall administration of intercollegiate athletics.

The Mountain West Conference is noted for its geographic diversity. Some of the most beautiful terrain and landscapes in the nation can be found within Mountain West Conference boundaries, including the majestic Rocky Mountain range, which borders four MWC schools (Air Force, BYU, Colorado State and Utah). The high plains of Wyoming (elevation 7,220 feet – the highest Division I campus in the nation) contrast with the desert city of Las Vegas (the fastest growing metropolitan area in the West) and the Pacific Ocean locale of San Diego State. The southwestern flavor of New Mexico complements the western heritage and culture of Fort Worth, Texas, home of the MWC’s most recent member, TCU.

The Mountain West Conference was conceived on May 26, 1998, when the presidents of eight institutions — Air Force, BYU, Colorado State, New Mexico, San Diego State, UNLV, Utah and Wyoming — decided to form a new NCAA Division I-A intercollegiate athletic conference. The split from the former 16-team conference re-established continuity and stability among the membership within the new league and signaled the continuation of its tradition-rich, long-standing athletic rivalries. Five of the MWC’s eight original members have been conference rivals since the 1960s (BYU, Utah, New Mexico, Wyoming, Colorado State), while San Diego State (1978) and Air Force (1980) were longtime members as well. UNLV and TCU entered the fold in 1996 and the Rebels continued as one of the original eight institutions that formed the MWC in 1999. TCU rejoined the group with its first year of competition in the Mountain West in 2005-06. On June 17, 2010, Commissioner Craig Thompson announced the addition of Boise State University to the Mountain West Conference, effective July 1, 2011.

In golf, all nine MWC institutions field men's golf teams. On the women's side, seven of the nine schools sponsor women's golf programs. The seven women's golf programs are: Wyoming, Brigham Young, Colorado State, UNLV, New Mexico, San Diego State and TCU.

The 2010 MWC Women's Golf Championship will be held at Wigwam Resort in Phoenix, Ariz., from April 14-16. This will mark the first year the tournament will be held at Wigwam. New Mexico is the defending women's conference champion.

The men's golf championship will be held May 5-7 on the Omni Tucson National in Tucson, Ariz. This will mark the fiftth consecutive year the MWC Championship will be held at the Tucson National. Colorado State won the 2010 team title.

RAGTIME COWBOY JOEThe familiar fi ght song of the University of Wyoming athletics teams is Ragtime Cowboy Joe. This song is performed by the band as UW teams enter the playing surface, following a score or big play, and to fi re up the fans. The Cowboy and Cowgirl student-athletes traditionally sing this following each Wyoming victory.

RAGTIME COWBOY JOE“He always sings raggy music to the cattle as he swings back and forward in the saddle,on a horse - a pretty good horse! He’s got a syncopated gaiter, and you ought to hear the meterto the roar of his repeater; how they run - yes run! - when they hear that he’s ‘a-comin’,cause the western folks all know, he’s a high-falootin’, rootin, tootin’, son of a gun from ol’ Wyoming,Ragtime Cowboy, Talk about your Cowboy, Ragtime Cowboy Joe.”

THE STAMPEDEThe Stampede is the offi cial athletics fan club for University of Wyoming students. The Stampede is one BIG fan club for all 17 NCAA Division I sports at the University of Wyoming. The Stampede leads Wyoming fans

in spirit, tradition and passion for Wyoming Athletics. Members of the Stampede receive multiple benefi ts, and as a student at UW, The Stampede is the best way to become involved in Wyoming Athletics.

COWBOY NICKNAMEThe nickname “Cowboys” was applied to Wyoming athletic teams as early as 1891 - two years before the fi rst offi cial football game. The story is that the Wyoming pick-up football team appealed to a 220 pound cowpuncher, Fred Bush, for help in a game against the Cheyenne Soldiers. Bush signed up for a course or two and came out for the team. When he trotted onto the fi eld decked out in a checkered shirt and Cowboy hat, someone yelled, “Hey, look at the Cowboy!” Since many of the members of the team were also ex-cowboys, the name stuck. When women’s sports were added at UW, the nickname of Cowgirls was applied to those squads.

COWBOY JOE PONYCowboy Joe IV, a fourth generation Wyoming mascot, trots around War Memorial Stadium after each Cowboy touchdown, a tradition which started in 1950 when the Farthing Family of Cheyenne made a generous donation of a young pony to become Wyoming’s mascot. Cowboy Joe also represents UW in parades around the region, appears in Tailgate Park on football game days and leads the band and team in the pre-game Cowboy Walk. This beautiful little pony is very popular with Cowboy & Cowgirl fans of all ages.

SPIRIT SQUADSThe primary purpose of Wyoming’s Spirit Squads is to support the Cowboys and Cowgirls, and to serve as public relations ambassadors for the University of Wyoming. The UW cheer and pom squads work hard to get the crowd involved, lead cheers, entertain, and to boost the level of fan excitement and support to new extremes. In addition to their game-day involvement at UW Athletics’ contests, Wyoming Spirit Squad members also make numerous appearances at university activities, functions, programs, charitable and public events. Cowboy and Cowgirl sports are fl ying high and the Wyoming Spirit Squads are leading the way.

UW’S LOGO - STEAMBOAT One of the nation’s best, and most distinctive logos, the image on Wyoming’s uniforms depicts a cowboy riding a bucking horse. This symbol has been a part of the University of Wyoming Athletics Department since the early 1920’s, when UW Equipment Manger Deane Hunton obtained a photograph of a cowboy, Guy Holt, riding the world famous bucking horse Steamboat. Hunton had the photo made into a logo, which was then utilized by UW athletic teams. While there are differing opinions on exactly which horse and rider is depicted on all of UW’s athletic uniforms today, it is the symbol that is important. The bucking horse and rider represents the toughness, and the never-say-die spirit that is Wyoming. A statue honoring the symbol called ‘Fanning a Twister’, was erected at the north entrance of UW’s athletics facilities in 1991.

BROWN AND GOLD COLORSThe story behind the colors of the University of Wyoming dates back to 1895. In the spring of that year, the fi rst ever UW Alumni Banquet was held. Decorations for the banquet included Brown-Eyed Susans, a fl ower native of Southeastern Wyoming. The Alumni were so impressed with the colors (brown and yellow) and the beauty of the fl owers that they decided to select these colors as the offi cial school colors at UW. Currently, the colors are described as brown and gold.

WESTERN THUNDER MARCHING BANDThe University of Wyoming Marching Band - “Western Thunder” - features musicians from nearly every major on campus, who perform for thousands of football fans each year at home and road Cowboy football games. The Wyoming Pep Band plays at numerous other UW sporting events.

PISTOL PETEPistol Pete is a UW student mascot who works alongside the Wyoming Spirit Squads, encouraging the crowd and getting fans involved in the game.

Spend some time here and you’ll agree that much of UW’s character is shaped by this great “home on the range.” Laramie, the location of the main campus, is a safe, friendly community of 30,000 people. Nestled between the Laramie and Snowy Range mountains in southeastern Wyoming, it’s a beautiful, unspoiled place with a special life-style.

The campus extends over 785 tree-shaded acres. There’s an attractive mix of modern and traditional structures; many were built with native Wyoming sandstone. It’s a place where the sun shines 320 days each year. It’s hard to be gloomy here. When you view it from 7,200 feet, you see things more clearly. But it’s not just a pretty place; it’s also a place that works.

Up-to-date facilities support the learning and research mission that makes UW special. There are classrooms with state-of-the art computer technology, laboratories with the latest equipment, excellent libraries, computer systems with universal Internet access, and a long list of premier research facilities both on campus and in the surrounding area.

Great people, great surroundings, and a great education...it's all here at the University of Wyoming.

Wyoming...Like No Place on Earth

Photos on this Page:We wish to thank the Wyoming Division of Tourism for the photos featured on this page. (Top) The Tetons and Snake River. (Middle Top) Devil's Tower National Monument. (Middle Bottom) Yellowstone Falls. (Bottom) Old Faithful.

They say it’s beauty is like no other, and you fall in love with its people.

Wyoming, it is like no place on earth. Within it’s boundaries is America’s fi rst and largest national park, Yellowstone. The unbounding beauty there includes “Old Faithful” geyser and Yellowstone Lake, the world’s largest high-mountain lake. There is Yellowstone Falls, so awe-inspiring, it’ll take your breath away. There are over 260 different species of animals and birds located there. Wyoming’s wonders seem to be unending. There is Grand Teton National Park, whose centerpiece is the spectacular Teton Mountain Range. There is Devil’s Tower, America’s fi rst national monument. There is the world’s largest mineral hot springs located in Thermopolis. There is the beauty of Ten Sleep Canyon and a hundred other places.

For breathtaking beauty, Wyoming is unmatched. Its reputation brings millions of visitors to its borders each year. Plus, some of the best skiing in America can be found in Wyoming. Tourists and sportsmen can’t wait to get here to enjoy the clean mountain air and limitless outdoor attractions.

The history of the great American West can be heard whistling through the trees of Wyoming. Wyoming had an historic place in the taming of the West in the late 1800’s. Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid were two of Wyoming’s most famous citizens during the era of lawlessness. There remain plenty of reminders of an age that will live forever in American lore.

People are Wyoming’s strongest resource. These folks are down to earth, friendly and helpful. And, oh how proud they are of their Cowboys and Cowgirls. Wyoming has some of the best fans in America. As their only four-year university, Wyoming folks are tremendously supportive of their teams.

Yet, as down to earth as they are, many Wyomingites are on the cutting edge of politics, entertainment and business. Among some of the most famous are: former Vice President of the United States Dick Cheney; Dr. Jerry Buss, owner of the Los Angeles Lakers; Dean Conger, former chief photographer of the National Geographic Society; Curt Gowdy, the most decorated national sportscaster in history; Alan Simpson, former United States Senator; Gerry Spence, attorney and television personality; and General Pete Schoomaker, former U.S. Army Chief of Staff.

For great people, great scenery and a great education, there is no place quite like Wyoming.
