Alma Mater: Oklahoma State, ‘97

• In his 12 seasons, UW head man Mark Branch has raised the expectations of Cowboy Wrestling to new heights. He’s upped the profile of Wyoming Wrestling and brought the program notoriety and name recognition with levels of success rarely seen in the program’s history.

• With 123 dual wins and a 77-percent win rate within the conference ranks, Branch has established the Cowboys as the team to beat year in and year out. Branch has compiled a 58-17 mark against conference record foes with four regular-season dual titles.

• Under Branch’s watch, Wyoming has sent 58 wrestlers to the NCAA Championships with 12 returning as All-Americans.

• Branch’s Cowboys have finished in the top five at the Big 12 Championships three of the last four years, which includes a fourth place finish in 2018. At the tournament, seniors Archie Colgan and Bryce Meredith were awarded the program’s first two Big 12 individual titles.

COWBOYWRESTLING

WEEK 13

THE BASICS The Cowboys return to Laramie for a pair of important Big 12 matchups this week as they host Fresno State at 7 p.m., Thursday, February 6 and Oklahoma State Saturday, Feb. 8 at 7 p.m. The Oklahoma State dual will be held in the Arena-Auditorium

COVERAGE Fans can watch live via web stream at FloWrestling.com and follow live match updates at TrackWrestling. Fans can also access links at gowyo.com/coverage.

UPSET-MINDED The Pokes have notched many top-25 individual upsets this season and they ended 2019 no differently as Jaron Jensen upset No. 2 ranked Brock Mauller of Missouri while Cole Moody took down 20th-ranked Shane Jones of Old Dominion. Two weeks ago, Stephen Buchanan upset 19th-ranked Tanner Orndorff of Utah Valley. As a team, the Cowboys have defeated 15 ranked opponents this season in dual action.

ABOUT THE COWBOYS The Cowboys are looking to build on a historic dual campaign last season, in which the team compiled 16 dual wins for the first time since 1967. The 16 victories go down as the second-most in the program’s history. The Pokes, who reached as high as No. 8 in the Intermat Dual Meet Rankings and No. 11 in the NWCA Coaches Poll last season, knocked off three top-25 squads including then-No. 4 NC State and No. 15 North Carolina. Wyoming entered 2019-20 ranked No. 22 in the NWCA Poll and are now 24th. Wyoming’s Montorie Bridges will be looking to add another All-America recognition to his résumé after being named an All-American in 2017-18. Bridges finished runner-up at last season’s Big 12 Championships.

LAST TIME OUT Wyoming won its third consecutive dual Friday at Oregon State, defeating the Beavers in Corvallis, 18-13. At 157 pounds, Dewey Krueger, the lone senior in the Pokes’ lineup, clinched the team victory with a 8-3 win over Logan Meek. At 133, Montorie Bridges won the marquee matchup of the night, defeating 15th-ranked Devan Turner, 7-4. The Cowboys won six matchups in the win, including four straight at 174 pounds-heavyweight.

WRESTLER OF THE WEEK Dewey Krueger became the Pokes’ first Big 12 Wrestler of the Week in 2019-20 as he received the honor Dec. 17. Krueger began the T.O.C. with a 15-1 major decision victory over Cal Poly’s Max Anderson before tech-falling Highline’s John Sowers, 20-2 in the next round. In the quarterfinals, Krueger defeated Fresno State’s Matthew Olguin, 4-2 and then won in the semis over Grand View’s Renaldo Rodriguez-Spencer, 4-3. In the championship bout, Krueger got a Sudden Victory takedown to defeat Oregon State’s Hunter Willits in thrilling fashion, 3-1.

IN THE RANKINGS Montorie Bridges continues to be the highest-ranked Cowboy as he comes in at No. 8 at 133 pounds by four separate publications. At 149, Jaron Jensen is 32nd by TrackWrestling while Dewey Krueger at 157, remains at No. 31 by OpenMat. At 174, Hayden Hastings comes in at No. 11 by Track and Tate Samuelson moved to 30th by OpenMat at 184 pounds. At 197, Stephen Buchanan is ranked by three publications and is 23rd by OpenMat. Rounding-out the rankings for the Pokes is Brian Andrews at heavyweight, who’s ranked 18th by OpenMat and WIN Magazine.

2019 NCAA CHAMPIONSHIPS RECAP Wyoming closed the 2019 NCAA Championships in 34th as seven Cowboys qualified for the national tournament held in Pittsburgh. Bridges at 133 pounds and Turner at 141, were the best finishers for the Pokes as they made it to the third round in the consolation bracket. Verner (125), Branson Ashworth (165), Hastings (174), Samuelson (184) and Andrews (HWT) advanced to the second round on the consolation side. All but Ashworth return to the Cowboys in 2019-20.

WYOMING AT THE NCAA CHAMPIONSHIPS• Wyoming has crowned 35 All-Americans at the NCAA Championships since 1950. That total includes seven NCAA finalists.• The last and only individual champion at UW was Dick Ballinger in 1960.• Under head coach Mark Branch, 12 Cowboys have returned from the NCAA Championships as All-Americans.• Branch’s teams have recorded three top-20 finishes at the tournament, and five top-25 finishes.

COWBOYWRESTLING

Fresno St and Oklahoma St

• In Branch’s previous 11 seasons, Wyoming has recorded multiple All-Americans in four years, one in four years, and none just three years.

SUPER SEVEN For the first time since 2013, the Cowboys brought seven wrestlers to the NCAA Wrestling Championships. That total is just one short of the program record, as Wyoming qualified eight in both 1975 and 1949. The Pokes’ seven qualifiers mark the 11th time since 1940 that Wyoming has qualified seven or more grapplers in a single season. Wyoming was one of 16 teams in 2018-19 to qualify seven or more wrestlers.

STACKING WINS All seven of the Cowboys’ NCAA qualifiers last season racked up 21 wins or more that season, with former Cowboy Branson Ashworth and then-sophomore Brian Andrews both recording 32 apiece to lead the team. The Cowboys combined for 190 total bout wins on the year to tie for fifth nationally. A look at the complete list:

Rk. School Wins1. Oklahoma State 2162. Iowa State 2153. Penn State 2094. Ohio State 2075. Wyoming 190 Missouri 1907. Minnesota 1858. Virginia Tech 1709. North Carolina 16810. Iowa 161

FAMILIAR FACES In 2018-19, Wyoming had a handful of newcomers enter the starting lineup, however this season, the Cowboys return seven wrestlers who started in a dual last season, including five national tournament qualifiers. The Pokes are solidfied at multiple weights, including 125, 133, 149, 157, 174, 184 and heavyweight.

HISTORIC STREAK SNAPPED The Cowboys ran off the fourth-longest win streak in school history last season. Wyoming went from Dec. 30 to Feb. 3 without a loss. The eight-match win streak was only two off from the longest in school history:

Top Win Streaks - School History1. W10 1950-522. W9 1982 W9 1966-674. W8 1959-60 W8 1975 W8 1986 W8 2009 W8 2012 W8 2018-19

BUILDING BRIDGES Wyoming’s 2018 All-American Montorie Bridges, caught the eyes of the wrestling world as a redshirt freshman when—then ranked No. 20 at 133 pounds—he knocked off No. 3 Kaid Brock of Oklahoma State in the dual against OSU. That win set the stage for a stellar rookie season for Bridges who went on to finish eighth at the NCAA Championships, becoming the program’s second freshman All-American.

Bridges joined Joe LeBlanc as the only freshman to earn All-American honors in their first season. LeBlanc (184 pounds) did so in 2009 when he finished in fifth place. Bridges completed his season with a 35-7 overall record. His 35 wins are tied 16th all-time in a single season for UW. The Cowboy had a strong redshirt sophomore campaign, going 31-10 overall while winning 16 of his 19 dual starts and turning in eight ranked victories. Bridges also qualified for the NCAA Tournament for the second time in his career. Bridges enters the 2019-20 season as the highest-rated Cowboy as he was ranked in the top 10 in three polls. Bridges is ranked seventh by both FloWresting and WIN Magazine entering the 2019-20 dual slate.

THE 7220 ADVANTAGE Training and competing at 7,220 feet has its advantages. The Cowboys use their offseason to improve their conditioning, training in various outdoor locations. During the season, the Pokes train in the team wrestling room with high intensity. That has led to a lot of success on the home mats. Since 1931-32, the Cowboys are 272-161-6 at home, a winning percentage of 63 percent. At neutral sites, Wyoming is 95-62-1 (.604), and 222-201-8 (.524) at away locations.

BRANCH HITS CENTURY WIN MARK In a 37-3 rout at Air Force in 2018, head coach Mark Branch picked up his 100th career coaching victory. With the win, he became the fourth coach in the history of Wyo-ming wrestling to win at least 100 duals with the program. Now with 123 wins, a look at the list of Wyoming head coaches that have reached the 100-win benchmark:

UNPRECEDENTED SUCCESS Now in his 12th season at the helm of the Cowboy wrestling program, Branch has amassed a 123-60 overall record and a 58-17 mark in conference action. Under his watch, Wyoming has sent 58 wrestlers to the NCAA Championships with 12 returning as All-Americans.

USAFA, Colo. (Nov. 16, 2019) – The Wyoming wrestling team opened up its 2019-20 dual season and Big 12 action Saturday night as the Cowboys rode a hot start on the way to a 21-12 victory over Air Force in Colorado Springs. The Pokes opened the dual winning the first four bouts and 5-of-6. UW had three bonus-point victories in those first four bouts. Starting at 174 pounds, No. 14 Hayden Hastings opened the night with a major decision victory over Cody Surratt, 9-1. Hastings jumped on Surratt early, gaining a first period takedown to take an early 2-0 lead into the second. After an escape from Surratt in the second, Hastings took control with two more takedowns in the period, followed by another in the third. Hastings also grabbed the Riding Time bonus in the win.At 184, No. 18 Tate Samuelson took care of Jake Thompson 5-1. The first two periods of the bout were pretty uneventful other than a penalty point in the second rewarded to Samuelson. Samuelson opened things up in the third with an escape, followed quickly with a takedown to go up 4-0. Thompson only scored on an escape late in the match and Samuelson was also rewarded a Riding Time point.Stephen Buchanan at 197 continued his impressive beginning to the season, winning 15-3 over Casey Jumps. After Jumps opened the contest with a takedown, Buchanan quickly went to work, making the score 2-1 with an escape before taking the lead for good with a takedown and led 3-2 heading into the second period. In that period, Buchanan took control with a four-point nearfall before busting the match wide open, scoring seven points in the final period, including the Riding Time bonus. With the win, Buchanan improves to 9-0 on the young season. At heavyweight, Brian Andrews grabbed Wyoming’s third bonus-point vic-tory, winning 12-1 over Kayne Hutchison. Andrews went to work early in his matchup, leading 6-1 at the end of the first period, thanks to a takedown and three-point nearfall. Andrews was workmanlike the rest of the match, grabbing a takedown in each of the second and third periods to go along with an escape and riding time. After a loss at 125, Montorie Bridges got the Cowboys back on track with a 3-2 win at 133 over Jared Van Vleet. After a scoreless first, Bridges’ second period escape gave him a 1-0 lead. However, Bridges would give up an escape early in the third to make the bout 1-1 before a takedown reclaimed the lead, 3-1 and he was able to hold on from there after a Van Vleet escape.Leading 18-3 at that point, AFA got a win at 141 as Lenny Petersen defeated Chase Zollmann, 5-3 to make the dual 15-6. Jaron Jensen would get a big 6-4 win at 149 over AFA’s Dylan Martinez. Jensen would win behind the strength of a first and third period takedown and a pair of escapes in the second period.Jensen’s win would be the final of the evening for the Cowboys as the Falcons took decisions at both 157 and 165 pounds as Logan Jensen and Dewey Krueger, respectively, were defeated. The win marks the second consecutive season that the Pokes have won their season-opening dual. It also makes the Cowboys 12-0 all-time against the Falcons under Head Coach Mark Branch. UW will return to action Friday as it travels to face the fifth-ranked Huskers.

FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. (Dec. 30, 2019) – The Wyoming wrestling team closed its time at the South Beach Duals by splitting a pair of duals on day, opening the day with a come-from-behind 24-15 victory over Old Dominion before closing the event coming up short against Michigan State, 18-12.

The Pokes had four wrestlers go 2-0 on the day as Montorie Bridges (133), Cole Moody (165), Stephen Buchanan (197) and Brian Andrews (HWT) won both of their matchups on the day. Andrews went a perfect 4-0 over the two days.

Against ODU, the Cowboys (2-4) rallied to win the final three matches of the dual to secure the victory after falling behind 15-12. Tate Samuelson’s 2-1 victory over Antonio Agee sparked the comeback for the Pokes as he picked up the riding time bonus point to earn the hard-fought win at 184 pounds and tie the bout at 15-15.

At 197, Stephen Buchan used a late takedown to help lengthen his lead over Timothy Young and was able to secure an 8-5 victory and push UW in front, 18-15. Andrews then closed out the dual in style with a third-period fall over Jacob Bullock. The pin came at 6:08 in the match.

Bridges, Moody and Jaron Jensen also picked up individual wins against the Monarchs. Bridges tallied his first dual fall of the season as he pinned Shannon Hanna at 6:09 to give Wyoming an early 6-3 lead in the contest. Two bouts later, at 149 pounds, 24th-ranked Jensen was able to escape with a 3-2 win over ODU’s Kenan Carter to give the Pokes the team lead back at 9-6.

Moody’s win at 165 pounds was perhaps the biggest of the day for the Cowboys as he was able to upset No. 20 Shane Jones, 5-2. The win broke a 9-9 tie with the Monarchs in the dual.

Against the Spartans, the Cowboys came up just short in a couple of close matches that ended up costing them the dual.

Bridges picked up his second win of the day to earn UW’s first victory in the dual as he was able to survive a 1-0 match against Garrett Pepple. Moody was also able to pick up a one-point win as he defeated Austin Hiles, 6-5. Andrews ended the day with a 1-0 win as well, besting Christian Rebottaro late.

Buchanan had the widest-margin in his win against the Spartans as he was able to down Nick May, 13-7. Buchanan ended the match on a tear, scoring six late points in the third period to break a 7-7 tie and conclude his perfect day.

“We had some tough duals and lost several matches we should have won today,” said Head Coach Mark Branch.

“When that happens, you’re going to lose tough duals. Our lineup is a little thin right now and the bottom line is, we have to be a tougher team.”

Wyoming returns to action with another multiple-dual event as the Cowboys will travel to Army West Point for the West Point Duals to begin the New Year, Jan. 4. UW will face Army, American and North Carolina at the event.

WEEK 13

FARGO, N.D. (Jan. 10, 2020) – The Wyoming wrestling team racked-up eight match wins, four of which were bonus-point victories that included a pair of falls as the Cowboys rolled past North Dakota State, 34-6 Friday night in Fargo. Hayden Hastings at 174 pounds and Brian Andrews at heavyweight recorded the two falls for the Pokes. Wyoming improves to 4-6 overall on the season and 2-0 in Big 12 duals.

“That was a breath of fresh air,” said Head Coach Mark Branch.

“Those first three guys kind of set the tone for us, we were underdogs at 141 and 149 tonight and to have two upsets to begin, I think it captured the momentum for us and quieted their crowd. “Those are important things to do on the road. It’s important to win early and keep the crowd out of it. Even in our losses, the way we came back in those matches and the way the guys fought back, it kind of kept the crowd out of it still, because they had to hang on at the end.”

The dual began at 133, with the most-anticipated matchup of the evening as No. 6 Montorie Bridges faced 12th-ranked Cam Sykora of NDSU. Bridges was able to get the Pokes started off right as he used a three-point second period to help him prevail over Sykora, 6-4. The win marks Bridges’ ninth straight.

“They picked the weight to start at tonight,” said Branch.

“They were looking to get momentum to start the dual at that weight, but I felt like Montorie executed some things we focused on this week and worked on in practice. He did a great job of riding and being tough in the top position and then chaining his moves together, which were both things we practiced. It was a big boost for the team for him to go out there and do that and execute things we’ve worked on and to let the guys see that what we focused on could work and to go out and execute. He gave our team confidence.”

Next up, Trevor Jeffries at 141, lengthened UW’s team lead thanks to a takedown in the first Sudden Victory period to defeat the Bisons’ Sawyer Degen, 4-2 to push the Wyoming lead to 6-0. At 149, Jaron Jensen kept the victories rolling as he picked up a 4-3 win. Jensen trailed heading into the third period, but took a brief 3-2 lead thanks to a reversal. The Bison’s Jaden VanMaanen was able to tie the bout late with an escape, but thanks to the Riding Time bonus point, Jensen was able to prevail and put the Cowboys up 9-0 in the match.

North Dakota State (4-4) got its two wins at 157 and 165 pounds as Dewey Krueger and Cole Moody dropped their respective matches, 8-4 and 10-7.

Wyoming got back on track at 174 as Hayden Hastings’ return to the lineup was a memorable one. Hastings pinned NDSU’s Lorenzo De La Riva early in the second period. Hastings was in control of the match from the outset, scoring six quick points in the first period and led 6-1 after one.

“That was a big win for Hayden coming back, especially since he lost to De La Riva last season at the Big 12 Tournament. Hayden watched film all week and we looked at and worked on some things with him and he was aggressive right away and put (De La Riva) on his back twice, and that really took the wind out of NDSU’s sails I thought. For Hayden to come back after missing some time and take care of business like that was really big,” continued Branch.

Next up, Tate Samuelson earned a major decision victory at 184 pounds over Noah Cressell, 10-1. Samuelson had a workmanlike effort, recording a takedown in the first and second period, as well as an escape and took a 5-0 lead into the final period. In the third, Samuelson got two more takedown to go up 9-1 and then got the riding time bonus.

At 197, Stephen Buchanan pulled out an exciting victory over Cordell Eaton, 4-3. Buchanan, who trailed most of the match, was able to secure a takedown near the edge of the mat with just seven seconds left to take the lead and earn a thrilling victory and put UW up 22-6.

Brian Andrews put the exclamation point on the evening for the Cowboys as he pinned No. 25 Brandon Metz is just 53 seconds to push the margin 28-6 in the dual. Doyle Trout rounded-out the evening with a forfeit win at 125 pounds.

Wyoming now shifts its focus to the South as another Big 12 opponent is on tap Sunday as the Cowboys face South Dakota State at noon, Mountain Time in Brookings.

BROOKINGS, S.D. (Jan. 12, 2020) – The Wyoming wrestling team’s comeback effort fell just short Sunday afternoon in Brookings, S.D., as South Dakota State edged the Cowboys by the slimmest of margins, 17-16. The Pokes won three consecutive matches in the middle weights, including four of the final six bouts, but it was not enough to overcome falling behind 11-3 early on in the dual.

“That was heartbreaking,” said Head Coach Mark Branch.

“We had some guys step-up and get us back into the duals against a very good team, but we needed to make one or two things happen and we didn’t.”

The Jackrabbits (6-3, 3-0 Big 12) got out the gates quickly with a Technical Fall victory at 125 pounds to go up 5-0. At 133, Montorie Bridges continued his winning streak as he put together a 5-1 victory over SDSU’s Zach Price. Bridges used a four-point second period to take a 4-0 lead and then controlled much of the action in the third to secure the win.

After the Jackrabbits picked up wins at 141 and 149 pounds, they took an 11-3 lead in the dual before the Pokes fired off three-straight wins begin-ning at 157 pounds by Dewey Krueger. Krueger defeated Colten Carlson 9-4 to jump start the Cowboys. Krueger got a takedown in both the first and second periods, and then turned Carlson for a four-point nearfall to do most of his damage in the victory.

At 165, Cole Moody picked up a major decision victory with a 13-3 win over Tanner Cook. After falling behind early, 2-0, Moody got a quick escape and then a takedown of his own in the first to take a 3-2 lead. From there, he got another escape and takedown in the second before pouring it on in the third with a takedown and a four-point nearfall of his own. Moody added the riding time point to get a 10-point margin of victory.

“Cole Moody really had the performance we knew he was capable of and he really helped spark a fire with this team. That win should really give him confidence,” continued Branch.

Hayden Hastings kept the winning going at 174 as he blanked Cade King, 5-0. After a scoreless first period, Hastings got an escape in the second to go up 1-0 heading into the final period. In the third, Hastings secured a takedown to go up 3-0, was awarded a penalty point and also got the riding time bonus to take the shutout victory. At that point, UW had a 13-11 lead in the dual.

At the 184- and 197-pound weights, SDSU was able to edge-out the Cowboys behind the strength of a pair of ranked wrestlers as Tate Samuelson lost to 16th-ranked Zach Carlson, 3-2 and Stephen Buchanan fell to No. 20 Tanner Sloan, 6-3. The Jackrabbits reclaimed the team lead, 17-13 at that point.

“One takedown at 184 or 197 could have given us the dual and we were in position for those takedowns. We let them dictate the matches at 174 and 285, even though we won those, we didn’t put ourselves in a match to get bonus points. We had several ways to win that dual and upset a confer-ence opponent, so it’s going to sting a little bit,” said Branch.

Brian Andrews rounded-out the dual for the Cowboys with a hard-fought, low-scoring, 1-0 win over Blake Wolters. Andrews controlled the action for much of the match and was able to maintain control on the top in the third period, securing the riding time point to earn the victory.

Wyoming will be off next week and will return to action for their first home duals of the season in two weeks as the Cowboys host CSU Bakersfield at 7 p.m., Jan. 24 at the UniWyo. The Pokes will then head to Green River to host Utah Valley at 2 p.m., Jan. 26.

LARAMIE, Wyo. (Jan. 24, 2020) – It was a banner night on the mat for the Wyoming wrestling team as the Pokes finally got the chance to wrestle in a home dual Friday night and the Cowboys treated the Laramie faithful to quite the show in a 34-3 victory over CSU Bakersfield.

Wyoming (5-7) recorded five bonus-point victories on the night, four major decisions and one pin, while winning 9-of-10 bouts against the Roadrun-ners (2-4). Hayden Hastings, at 174 pounds, got the fall for the Cowboys while Tate Samuelson (184), Stephen Buchanan (197), Brian Andrews (HWT) and Trevor Jeffries (141) all picked up major decision victories.

Cole Moody got the dual started at 165 pounds and come up big late in his 4-2 win over Jacob Thalin. Moody scored a reversal with four seconds left in the first period to tie the match at 2-2 and then got an escape in the second to go in front 3-2 before riding Thalin out the entire third period to pick up the riding time bonus and the win.

Next, at 174, Hastings pinned Albert Urias in just 1:51. It was Hastings’ seventh fall of the season and second in his last three matches and gave the Cowboys a 9-0 lead after two bouts.

“It was awesome,” said Hastings after the dual.

“Wrestling in front of the home crowd, we’ve been hyping this up for a while now and the turnout was great, the fans are amazing. I like to come out and put on a performance and get the crowd into it. Tonight I didn’t mind wrestling second and getting out and going and then sitting back and watch my teammates.”

Samuelson made it 13-0 UW after his 13-4 major over Josh Loomer. Samuelson recorded five takedowns in the win and scored seven points in the final 1:11 of the third period to lengthen his lead from 6-2 to 13-4 in order to pick up the bonus-point win.

Buchanan kept the train rolling with a 14-6 win over CSUB’s Dominic Ducharme. Buchanan also got to work late in his match, scoring nine points in the third period alone to earn the major, including registering two takedown in the final 13 seconds. Buchanan also scored five points in the second period and led 5-1 going into the final period.

Andrews got the fourth consecutive bonus-point win for the Pokes as he bested Jarrod Snyder 13-3. Andrews did his damage with a pair of four-point nearfalls in the first period and led 10-0 after one. From there, Andrews recorded a pair of third period escapes and then earned the riding time bonus, putting the Pokes up 21-0 as a team.

Jake Svihel was able to outlast Alex Hernandez-Figueroa at 125 pounds, winning 8-6. Svihel took a 4-2 lead into the second period, thanks to a pair of first period takedowns. After scoring three more points in the second, Svihel earned an escape with 1:24 left in the third to take an 8-4 lead before surrendering a late takedown.

At 133, Montorie Bridges won his eighth consecutive match and 14th out of his last 15 bouts, as he defeated Chance Rich, 7-4. Bridges controlled much of the match, taking a 2-1 lead into the second period. In the second, Bridges got an escape just five seconds into the period and then a takedown late to go up 5-1. In the third, Rich made things interesting with an escape and takedown before Bridges was able to get back to neutral with 26 seconds left and hang on for the riding time bonus.

Jeffries’ 13-2 win at 141 was the final bonus-point victory of the night for the Cowboys as he bested Angelo Martinoni. Jeffries got to work early, scoring a takedown, a reversal and a four-point nearfall in the first to grab an 8-2 lead. After reversing Martinoni in the second, Jeffries finished him off with a takedown in the third and rode him out the rest of the way, tally-ing a ride time of 3:43 in the win.

Dewey Krueger ended the evening at 157, following up UW’s lone loss of the evening with a 5-2 decision over the Roadrunners’ Wyatt Gerl. Krueger led most of the match, taking a 2-0 lead via takedown just 28 seconds into the matchup. After a three-point second period, Krueger was able to hang on despite a third period takedown by Gerl, capping off the night for the Pokes.

“It was really good to be home, it was a great crowd tonight with a lot of energy,” said Head Coach Mark Branch.

“I thought our guys came out tonight, especially early and set the tone for our team performance. We had some really strong performances, a lot of bonus points early on which gave us a little breathing room. We put a lot on our guys’ shoulders when we’re at home. We’ve got a home crowd we tell them it’s their duty to go out and entertain the crowd, not just win, but entertain them,” continued Branch.

The Cowboys look to continue their momentum later this weekend as they host Utah Valley Sunday at 2 p.m., in Green River in the Outreach Match held at Green River High School. Wyoming 34, CSU Bakersfield 3Jan. 24, 2020 | Laramie, Wyo. | UniWyo Sports Complex

GREEN RIVER, Wyo. (Jan. 26, 2020) – In front of a raucous crowd of over 1,000 in Green River, the Wyoming wrestling team put on a show during their outreach match, recording four falls while taking care of business over Utah Valley, 37-9. The win makes it a clean weekend sweep for the Pokes in their home-opening duals of the season.

Five of the first six matches in the dual ended in pins with four of those belonging to the Cowboys. Jake Svihel (125), Trevor Jeffries (141), Dewey Krueger (157) and Cole Moody (165) earned the falls in the win for the Pokes.

“I thought it was great, very thankful for everything that Green River did to put this thing on,” said Head Coach Mark Branch.

“They packed the gym and it was a great crowd and atmosphere. We got a lot of pins, which was great, especially early on. Bonus points are really important in setting the tone. It gives you some breathing room and allows the guys to feel like they can just go out and wrestle and don’t have to worry about the team score.”

Svihel got things going in his victory, pinning Will Edelblute partway through the third period. Svihel got off to a slow start, falling behind in the bout 6-0 in the first period, before rattling off seven straight points of his own before getting the fall.

After Montorie Bridges fell to No. 19 ranked Taylor LaMont to tie the team score at 6-6, Trevor Jeffries pushed the Cowboys back in front with a fall early in the third period over Isaiah Delgado. At the time of the fall, Jeffries was in control of the bout, 12-2.

Jaron Jensen was next up and was able to sneak out a 1-0 win over Cam-eron Hunsaker to put the Cowboys up 15-6. Jensen scored the only point of the match with an escape in the second period.

Krueger got the pin party going again at 157 as he stopped Jerry Rubio just 2:09 into their contest. Krueger got to work early in the win with a takedown and two nearfalls to begin the first period before ending things to put UW up 21-6.

Moody at 165 made it back-to-back pins as he got the win in just 4:05 over Grant LaMont, to make the team score 27-6. Moody was ahead 9-4 at the time of the fall.

After No. 10 Hayden Hastings lost a heartbreaker in Sudden Victory to ninth-ranked Kimball Bastian, 12-5, Tate Samuelson got the Cowboys back on track with an 11-2 major decision over Ashton Seely. Samuelson was able to score seven points in the third period alone to stretch his victory into bonus points.

At 197, Stephen Buchanan got a top-20 win as he outlasted No. 19 Tanner Orndorff, 8-3. Buchanan broke a 3-3 tie in the third period with five points in the final period, including a takedown and two-point nearfall in the closing seconds to put the Cowboys up 34-9.

Lastly, Brian Andrews was able to control his way to a 4-0 win over Chase Trussell. Andrews got a takedown in the first and then an escape and the rid-ing time bonus point in the third period to close out the dual for the Pokes.

“Overall, it was a great dual meet. It hurt to lose a couple of those but it’s a learning experience. It was a good conference win and the team’s looking better each time we go out and we just have to keep building on it,” continued Branch.

The Cowboys return to action as they return to the road Jan. 31 at Oregon State for an 8 p.m., MT dual against the Beavers.

CORVALLIS, Ore. (Jan. 31, 2020) – The Wyoming wrestling team held on to win a hard-fought dual Friday evening over Oregon State, defeating the Beavers on the road, 18-13 to secure the Cowboys’ third consecutive dual victory. No. 31 Dewey Krueger’s 8-3 victory over Logan Meek at 157 pounds was the deciding win for the Pokes in the final match of the night.

“It was a really good experience for us,” said Head Coach Mark Branch.

“We wrestled a really energized team that we were wrestling at home, in front of their crowd. They came out with a lot more energy than we did. We have to learn to match that. We have to have more energy than our opponents no matter what the situation is or where we’re wrestling at. “I like the fact we showed some guts and found a way to win. The bottom line is, it was a battle.”

The dual started out at 165 with Cole Moody dropping a heartbreaker in sud-den victory to Aaron Olmos, 6-4, however, the Pokes responded by rattling off four-straight wins to go up 12-3 in the team score. No. 11 Hayden Hastings started the run with his 6-3 decision over Jackson McKinney. Hastings trailed 2-1 in the second period, but got an escape, followed up quickly by a takedown to take a 4-2 lead into the third. In the final period, Hastings added another takedown and was able to hang on for the win.

At 184, Tate Samuelson tallied three takedowns in his 8-3 victory over Colton Beisley. Samuelson also got an escape in the third to go up 5-1 and eventually earned the riding time bonus to end things. Stephen Buchanan at 197 made it three consecutive wins for the Cowboys as he defeated OSU’s JJ Dixon, 9-5.

The bout was tied 3-3 after the first period with both wrestlers getting an escape and a takedown. After Dixon took a brief 4-3 lead in the second, Buchanan snagged the lead for good with his second takedown of the match and then in the third, recorded a reversal to begin the period and added his third takedown for good measure after a Dixon escape.

At heavyweight, 18th-ranked Brian Andrews grinded-out a 2-1 win over Jamarcus Grant. The two were scoreless after two periods, but an escape from Andrews in the third was the difference as he rode Grant out the rest of the period and picked up the riding time bonus. Grant’s only score came on the second stalling warning on Andrews.

After the Beavers got a major decision at 125 to cut into the Pokes’ team lead, 12-7, eighth-ranked Montorie Bridges got the marquee win of the night in a top-15 showdown with Oregon State’s 15th-ranked Devan Turner, 7-4. Bridges took a 2-0 lead into the second period before Turner was able to tie things up with a two-point nearfall. However, Bridges was able to get an escape and took a 3-2 lead into the final period. Turner would tie the bout again with another escape before Bridges took the lead for good with his second takedown to go up 5-3 and then earned penalty point, as well as the riding time point.

Oregon State would not go away though, getting back-to-back wins at 141 and 149 pounds as 25th-ranked Grant Willits held off Trevor Jeffries’ comeback bid, 12-10 and Lane Stigall defeated Jaron Jensen, 9-3 to make the team score, 15-13.

Krueger’s match got off to a fast start as both he and Meek got a takedown and an escape in the first, however, Meek wouldn’t score again as Krueger again scored three points in the second period, followed by Meek’s second stalling warning and then the riding time bonus in the third to secure the dual victory for the Cowboys.

“Dewey felt it, he came out way too jazzed and was looking for a home run. Halfway through the match I told him ‘just wrestle, just score and take a deep breath.’ It took him a while to settle down and do his thing and once he did that, it was good. For him to be the only senior in our lineup and to get the win for his team, especially on the road, is hopefully a memory he’ll have forever.”

UW returns home next week now for a pair of Big 12 tilts in Laramie. The Cowboys welcome Fresno State to town Thursday, February 6 for a 7 p.m., match in the UniWyo. The Pokes then welcome Oklahoma State for a 7 p.m., bout Saturday inside the Arena-Auditorium.
