WALES COAST PATHThe Wales Coast Path is a WelshGovernment initiative to provide870 miles of some spectacularscenery along the whole Welshcoastline and with Offa’s DykePath, extends to over 1,000 miles.The entire path is for walkers, withsome sections accessible forcyclists, families with pushchairs,people with restricted mobilityand horse riders.
In Penarth, the path links westtowards Lavernock and east toCardiff Bay Barrage, with somegreat views of the Severn Estuaryand the islands of Flat Holm andSteep Holm along the way.

The town centre retains an air ofVictorian style with elegantbuildings bordering wide tree-linedroads. Some of the finest examplesof Victorian architecture can beseen in Penarth’s churches, publicand commercial buildings and inthe ornate houses, once the homesof ship owners, coal magnates andmaster mariners.
Linking the seafront and towncentre are easily accessible parksand gardens. Overlooking theEsplanade are the impressive ItalianGardens while Windsor Gardens andAlexandra Park offer a welcomesplash of colour all year round.
From the Esplanade an attractivecoastal path leads out to LavernockPoint. It was from here in 1897that Marconi received the firstradio transmission over water fromFlat Holm Island and a plaquerecording this historic event is setin the boundary wall of nearbyLavernock Church.

Brunel to draw up plans for a railwayfrom Merthyr to the River Ely and thisled to the Taff Vale Railway Bill of1836.
At the top of Hill Street stands theformer Pilot Hotel and across the roadare the Catherine Meazey Flats ,named to commemorate Mrs Meazeywho spent a lifetime helping the sickand needy.
On either side of Glebe Street arerows of small houses, built in thel850’s, for the men excavating thedock. The street was the town’soriginal shopping area, and in the 19thCentury was a pulsating cosmopolitanarea with four pubs and dozens ofgrocers’ and butchers’ shops.
At the junction with Salop Streetturn left and walk past houses built inthe 1850’s, many of which still haveentrances to small stable yards.
Opposite the entrance to SalopStreet stands Albert Road MethodistChurch, designed by Henry Budgen.Built in 1906, the lofty tower originallyhad four decorative stone spires whichwere later removed.
Further along Albert Road, standsBelle Vue Court, the former offices ofPenarth Urban District Council. Built in1881 it is distinguished by its chateaustyle turrets and French pavilion roofs.Behind the offices was the Councilyard, home of the Council’s horses andthe town’s fire engine. In 1908 a fireengine house was built alongside theoffices, and can still be seen today. In

The RoutePlas St. Pol de Leon stands on
Cwtsh-y-Cwm, a creek once usedextensively by pirates. In more moderntimes the waterway has been used bylocal Channel Pilots and Coastguards.
Two large buildings, designed by G E Robinson, overlook the entranceto the Marina. The Custom House,identified by its clock tower, was builton the site of the notorious PenarthHead Inn - a haunt of local smugglers.The building has now been restoredand is a superb restaurant with viewsacross the bay. Alongside stand theMarine Buildings, with its 15 bayterrace and French partition roof.Both date from around 1865 and werebuilt to serve Penarth Dock.
The Cardiff Bay Barrage is 1.1kmlong and extends from Penarth Marinain the south to Cardiff Docks in thenorth. Its landscaped embankmentoffers the opportunity to walk acrossto Cardiff with excellent views outover the sea and the bay.
Paget Terrace forms a pleasantrun of substantial Victorian houses,one of which was a notorious drinkingclub in the 19th Century, laterconverted into a seamen’s boardinghouse. The houses in Paget Road areentered from an unusual raised walkway which affords a magnificentpanoramic view of Cardiff and theencircling hills.
Climb the cobbled steps of HillStreet, named after Anthony Hill, theowner of the Plymouth Ironworks anda friend of Isambard Brunel. Hill asked

the 1890’s in response to theincreasing incidence of diphtheria,the Council Offices were convertedinto a temporary isolation hospital.
Albert Road Primary School wasopened in 1876. The school’snoticeable features are the decoratedgables, in blue and white designs,with friezes of fidgety school childrenunder the eaves, one with adistinctive white mouse.
Opposite the school stands BelleVue Park, built on a reclaimed quarry.The houses in Albert Crescent are anattractive example of large Victoriantown houses, the gardens coveringwhat was a former quarry.
St Augustine’s Church, with its90ft saddle-back tower, is one of thetown’s historic landmarks and alsowell known to sailors in the BristolChannel. Designed by WilliamButterfield and built in 1865, it isregarded as one of the finestVictorian churches in Britain and hasa beautiful multi-coloured interior.
The extensive Penarth Head Fortand Coastal Battery were built in thel890’s to protect the approaches toCardiff and Penarth Docks fromFrench invasion. The Head was usedfrom the earliest days as a beaconand it is from here that Penarth getsits name - the Welsh “pen” means ahead or hill and “garth” apromontory, ridge or height. The siteoffers panoramic views across theBristol Channel to the islands of FlatHolm and Steep Holm and furtherstill to Somerset.

Along Bradford Place there areseveral houses reputed to have beenbuilt of ballast stone, brought intoPenarth Dock from all over the world.
Kymin Terrace, an imposing runof large Victorian properties, leads toKymin House , owned by PenarthTown Council. The grand house, builtaround l800, stands on the site of afarm, and is surrounded byattractively landscaped grounds.
The Esplanade was firstdeveloped in the 1880’s while thepier was built in 1894. At theentrance to the pier is the newlyrestored Pier Pavillion, amultifunctional arts and learningbuilding. At the far end of theEsplanade are Penarth Yacht Club andthe RNLI building, one of the busiestlifeboat stations in Britain.
A lane alongside the Yacht Clublinks the Esplanade to Marine Paradewith its magnificent large townhouses of local blue lias stone, oncethe homes of sea captains, coalmagnates and Cardiff businessmen.Across the road is Tower Hillcontaining the Coastguards’ originalwatch-tower and row of Coastguards’cottages. At the seaward end of therow stands the Chief Coastguard’shouse, referred to by some as BleakHouse .

The elegant Jacobean building onStanwell Road is the library, built onland given to the town by LordWindsor and financed by the CarnegieTrust. Opposite is the former cinemaof Art Deco Design .
With its elegant buildings andwide tree-lined streets, Penarth towncentre retains much of its originalVictorian and Edwardian character.
From here retrace your steps alongGlebe Street, down Steep Street andalong Paget Road and Dock Road backto the Marina.

Ar ben Stryd Hill saif hen adeiladGwesty’r Pilot ac ar draws y ffordd ceirFflatiau Catherine Meazey , a enwydi goffau Mrs Meazey a dreuliodd eibywyd yn helpu’r sâl a’r anghenus.
Ar bob ochr i Stryd Glebe saif rhesio dai bychan, a adeiladwyd yn y l850auar gyfer y dynion oedd yn cloddio’r doc.Y stryd hon oedd ardal siopa wreiddioly dref, ac yn y bedwaredd ganrif arbymtheg roedd yn ardal gosmopolitangyda phedair tafarn, degau o siopaugroser a siopau cigydd.
Yn y gyffordd gyda Stryd Saloptrowch i’r chwith a cherddwch heibio idai a adeiladwyd yn y 1850au, gydanifer ohonynt yn dal â mynedfa iiardiau stablau.
Gyferbyn â’r fynedfa i Stryd Salopsaif Eglwys Fethodistaidd Heol Albert,a gynlluniwyd gan Henry Budgen. Pany’i hadeiladwyd yn wreiddiol ym 1906,roedd gan y tw r bedwar meindwraddurniadol o garreg a dynnwyd i lawryn ddiweddarach.
Yn nes ymlaen ar hyd Heol Albertsaif Cwrt Belle Vue, cyn swyddfeyddCyngor Dosbarth Trefol Penarth. Fe'iadeiladwyd ym 1881 ac mae’r adeiladyn adnabyddus am ei dyredau arbatrwm chateau a thoeau pafiliwnFfrenig. Y tu cefn i'r swyddfeydd yroedd iard y Cyngor, cartref i geffylau’rCyngor ac injan dân y dref. Ym 1908adeiladwyd ty injan dân wrth ochr yswyddfeydd, ac mae hwn i’w weld hydheddiw. Yn y 1890au, mewn ymateb i’rcynnydd mewn achosion o ddifftheria,defnyddiwyd Swyddfeydd y Cyngor ynysbyty heintiau dros dro.

Mae’r ddau yndyddio o tua 1865 ac fe’u hadeiladwydi wasanaethu Doc Penarth.
Mae Morglawdd Bae Caerdydd yn1.1km o hyd ac yn ymestyn o FarinaPenarth yn y de i Ddociau Caerdydd yny gogledd. Gallwch gerdded ar draws iGaerdydd ar hyd yr arglawdd sydd wediei dirlunio gyda golygfeydd dros y môra’r bae.
Mae Teras Paget yn rhes o daisylweddol o Oes Fictoria, gydag unohonynt yn glwb yfed enwog yn ybedwaredd ganrif ar bymtheg, ac anewidiwyd yn ddiweddarach yn dy lletyi forwyr. Gyferbyn â’r ysgol ceir Parc BelleVue, a godwyd ar hen chwareladferedig. Mae’r tai yng NghilgantAlbert yn enghraifft ddeniadol o daitrefol mawr o Oes Fictoria, y gerddi'ngorchuddio yr hyn a arferai fod ynchwarel.
Mae Eglwys Awstin Sant, gyda’ithw r trumiog 90 troedfedd, yn un odirnodau hanesyddol y dref a hefyd ynadnabyddus i forwyr Môr Hafren. Fe’icynlluniwyd gan William Butterfield a’ihadeiladu ym 1865, a chaiff eihystyried yn un o eglwysi Oes Fictoriagorau Prydain. Mae tu fewn yr eglwysyn amryliw a hardd.
Adeiladwyd Caer a MagnelfaArfordirol Pentir Penarth yn y l890au iwarchod y llwybrau mynediad iGaerdydd a Dociau Penarth rhaggoresgyniad Ffrenig. Defnyddiwyd yPentir o’r dyddiau cynnar fel goleufa acwrth gwrs daw enw’r dref o’r geiriauPen a Garth. O’r safle hwn ceirgolygfeydd panoramig dros Fôr Hafreni ynysoedd Echni a Ronech acymhellach fyth i Wlad yr Haf.
Ar hyd Bradford Place ceir nifer odai y dywedir iddynt gael eu hadeiladuo garreg balast, a gludwyd i DdocPenarth o bob rhan o’r byd.
Mae Teras Kymin, rhes o adeiladaumawr o Oes Fictoria, yn arwain at DyKymin , sy’n eiddo i Gyngor TrefPenarth. Mae’r ty mawreddog, aadeiladwyd tua l800, wedi ei leoli ar dirfferm, ac fe’i hamgylchynir gan dirwedi ei dirlunio’n atyniadol.

10 Datblygwyd y Promenâd gyntaf yny 1880au tra bod y pier yn cael eiadeiladu ym 1894. Wrth fynedfa’r piersaif Pafiliwn y Pier sydd newydd eiadnewyddu, adeilad celfyddydau adysgu amlddefnydd. Ar ben pellaf yPromenâd mae Clwb Hwylio Penarthac adeilad yr RNLI, un o’r gorsafoeddbadau achub prysuraf ym Mhrydain.
Mae lôn sy’n rhedeg yn gyfochrogâ’r Clwb Hwylio yn cysylltu’r Promenâdi Marine Parade gyda’i dai trefolmawreddog o garreg galch las leol.Arferai’r rhain fod yn gartref igapteiniaid llongau, meistri glo a gw rbusnes Caerdydd. Ar draws y fforddgwelir Tower Hill sy’n cynnwys tw rgwylio gwreiddiol Gwylwyr y Glannaua rhes o fythynnod y Gwylwyr. Ar benagosaf i’r môr y rhes gwelir ty PrifWyliwr y Glannau, y caiff ei alw gan raiyn Bleak House. .
Ar ben Heol Plymouth mae OrielTy Turner, a enwyd ar ôl yr artist JMWTurner. Yn wreiddiol roedd yr adeiladyn cynnwys casgliad celf preifat, onderbyn hyn mae’n gartref i Ffotogallery,sydd wedi ymroi i hyrwyddo achyflwyno celf ffotograffig.
Y llyfrgell yw’r adeilad Jacobeaiddurddasol ar Heol Stanwell, a godwyd ardir a roddwyd i'r dref gan yr ArglwyddWindsor ac a ariannwyd ganYmddiriedolaeth Carnegie. Gyferbyn agef mae’r hen sinema yn arddull ArtDeco .
Gyda’i hadeiladau urddasol a'istrydoedd â choed o boptu maePenarth yn cadw llawer o’i chymeriadOes Fictoria ac Edwardaidd gwreiddiol.
