It quickly earned the reputation for being a “classy” tournament. “I guess from the first time, the people had good fun,” David adds. “Right away a lot of them said, ‘Put me down for next year!’” And, key sponsors have kept coming back and have continued to support the foundation over the years. “So far, so good,” David says.

Anyone who’s done it can tell you that the hardest part of any project is starting one from scratch. An artist, for example, begins

with a blank canvas; a writer stares at an empty screen; a contractor surveys a vacant lot. Such was the challenge when the David S. Ishii Foundation was established over 13 years ago.

The idea of starting the Foundation was hatched in 1998, the first year that the Hilo Invitational golf tournament was played after being inactive for several years. Elton Tanaka, then the district manager of Sears in Hawaii, was one of the key movers and shakers behind the Hilo revival. It was at that tournament that Elton and others learned that David was personally underwriting both boys and girls state golf championships since the Hawaii High School Athletics Association (HHSAA) transitioned from public to private funding in 1996.

Elton became part of a core group of individuals that founded the DSIF in 1999. Along with people like Allan Ikawa and Warren Haruki, this group was particularly well suited for the task, David notes, combining business acumen with a love of golf. Individually, they played in a lot of fundraising tournaments across the state and had a good idea as to what worked and what didn’t.

But who would chair the event? “Well, Elton never really had a choice,” David recalls. “Everybody just sort of looked at him and agreed he was ‘it.’” Elected by unanimous resolution, Elton rolled up his sleeves and took the bull by the horns. “He did an amazing job,” David adds. Elton worked the phones hard, calling on his extensive network of friends—many who owned their own businesses and were supportive of junior golf.

Another challenge was that in order to raise the kind of funds necessary, the sponsorship fee was set at $1,000 per team, which was considered extremely high at the time. “It took quite a bit of coaxing,” Elton admits, but after much effort by all of the board members the first tournament held in 2000 was sold out and the DSIF was on its way.

Mission of the David S. Ishii FoundationA non-profit corporation whose primary mission is to promote and advance the

game of golf, and to educate the public as to its benefits to society.

A Word About Our NewsletterThrough the Green is the official newsletter of the David S. Ishii Foundation.

The USGA defines the phrase “through the green” as “the entire golf course, except for tees, greens and designated hazards.” In tournament play, the phrase is used to mean that everything else is “in play.”

Through the Green is the Foundation’s way of saying to Hawaii’s young golfers: pursue your goals, play it as it lies, and strive to be the best you can along the way...

role as tournament chair at the 2012 tournament banquet. “Elton has children and now grandchildren on the mainland,” David explains. “He wants to spend more time with them, and because the tournament is traditionally held in June, he could not travel for half of each year. That’s how much he was dedicated to the event. He’s looking forward to spending more time with his family and having more freedom in general.”

Elton leaves the tournament in very good shape. It’s no secret that many golf tournaments are having a hard time finding enough players. However, the DSIF tournament is sold out at the sponsors level only. “There aren’t too many tournaments that can claim so much support,” David notes. “We need to keep it going, keep it strong.”

After some discussion at this year’s DSIF board meeting, no clear successor arose to fill Elton’s shoes. It is testament to Elton’s all-around hustle that, this year, the tournament chair’s role is being divvied up amongst a group of capable people who will share the various hats that Elton wore. David, Jay Hinazumi, Wendell Tom, and Del-Marc Fujita will serve as co-chairs and try to cover whatever needs to be done, including prizes. “Elton did all the prizes, too.

The DS IF Yasuko Asada Memorial College Scholarship

Awards were presented to Monique M. Ishikawa and Mark D. Ito at the Foundation’s 12th annual golf tournament held June 13, 2012, at Pearl Country Club.

Ishikawa is a graduate of Kalaheo High School and is attending Columbia University. Ito graduated from Aiea High School and is attending Illinois Institute of Technology. The recipients were selected on the basis of academic achievement, active participation on their high school golf teams, and full-time enrollment at an accredited U.S. college or university. Each will receive $1,000 in support each year for four years, totaling $4,000 per student.

The David S. Ishii Foundation Yasuko Asada Memorial College Scholarship Program aims to encourage the attainment of higher education goals by members of high school golf teams in the state of Hawaii. It is named in honor of Mrs. Yasuko Asada, a longtime friend and supporter who

In 2012, Moanalua High School junior John Oda and Kalani High School senior Richard Hattori qualified for the Junior Amateur tournament held at The Golf Club of New England in Stratham, N.H., July 16-23, 2012. Both qualified at Sectional play held at the Wailea Old Blue Golf Course on Maui, June 19-20, 2012. Oda was medalist with a 36-hole score of 135; Hattori finished second with a 139.

Of the starting field of 2,941 contestants the two Hawaii golfers were among the 156 who made it to The Golf Club of New England. During the stroke play portion of the tournament, Hattori shot 75-70—145 to finish in a tie for 9th and Oda shot 72-79—151 to finish in a tie for 49th. The top 64 proceed to match play, where Oda lost in the first round and Richard lost in the third round (round of 16).

2012 DSIF/HHSAA State Golf ChampionshipsIolani Girls, Punahou’s Komoto Capture State Titles

The Iolani girls golf team (pictured above) captured its first David S. Ishii Foundation/HHSAA State

Golf Championship May 1-2, 2012, at Wailua Golf Course on Kauai, breaking Punahou’s five-year dominance of the girls state team championships.

Iolani golfers Rose Huang, Keilyn Ing, Marissa Chow, Hana Furuichi and Ayumi Sakamoto contributed to the winning score of 14-over-par 454. Punahou finished second with a 461 total, one shot better than Waiakea. Baldwin (466) was fourth and Kauai (504) fifth.

Punahou junior Kacie Komoto took the individual title, overcoming a three-shot lead by Iolani freshman Rose Huang heading into the second day. Komoto, who won the State Women’s Stroke Play Championship at age 14, shot a 2-under-par 71 in the final round and finished at 1-under 145. Huang shot 71-75—146. Defending champion Eimi Koga, a Moanalua junior, shared third with Waiakea junior Ciera Min at 149. Kalaheo’s Monique Ishikawa (150) rounded out the top five.

The 2013 Girls DSIF State High School Golf Championships will be held at Kaanapali Golf Course April 30-May 1, 2013.

State Golf Championships

Moanalua high school boys won the 2012 David S. Ishii Foundation/HHSAA Boys Golf State

Championships on May 8-9, 2012, at the Wailua Golf Course on Kauai. It was Moanalua’s first-ever state boys golf title and ended a 32-year drought for the OIA.

Moanalua overcame a four-stroke lead by Iolani heading into the final round. Na Menehune (291-294—585) team included John Oda, Seungjae Maeng, Jefferson Yee, Brent Grant and Jared Flores. Iolani (593) took second and Punahou (595) was third.

Oda (68-71—139), a Moanalua sophomore, took individual honors. I t c a p p e d a remarkable run. In 2012, Oda qualified to play in the Sony Open in Hawaii, lost in a playoff fo r th e H awa i i Pearl Open title, and won the State Amateur Stroke

He’d talk to all the vendors to get the latest and greatest stuff,” David notes.

“We’ve also been fortunate to have lots of volunteers. We couldn’t run the tournament without them,” says David. “However, getting the people to play is the key. Thanks to the hard work of people like Elton, Allan and Warren, we’ve been very fortunate.”

With Elton’s tenure as tournament chair now over, David reflects on the future. “We’re getting older and for some it’s harder to play golf. That’s the sad part. Some of my friends don’t play anymore. We’re all starting to get a little creaky.”

However, David takes great solace in the fact that Elton’s hard work and his administrative skills have left the Foundation in good financial condition, assuring that the Foundation will be able to carry on its work in the future. Moreover, David is optimistic that younger players will follow the example set by the older folks and step up when their time comes.

Rather than having to start from scratch, however, at least anyone looking to continue what folks like Elton have already accomplished will say, “Now that’s a very solid foundation to build on.”
