COQUILLE — The third annual Bear Cupboard coat, tarp, sheet, towel and sock drive for the needy and homeless is underway.

Donations can be picked up by Sally McSherry by calling 541-347-9130 or can be delivered to Jefferson School in Coquille on Mondays and Tuesdays.

In 2018 Bear Cupboard served 2,117 families repre-senting 6,328 individuals in the Coquille and Bandon areas. This amounted to 115,796 pounds of food and countless items of clothing, according to organizers.

"We are the only food bank in the Coquille area that provides grocery style boxes full of dry, refrigerated and frozen food on a monthly basis as well as fresh produce, bread and pastries on a weekly basis," McSherry said. "Clothing is also available for the whole family every week. Please help us keep our citizens warm and dry this winter."

Those who need a special pick-up in Coquille can contact Gina at 541-297-0941.

BANDON - Library lover and local artist Lois Olds has donated one of her original oil paintings, which will be raffled off at the Dec. 7 Holiday Book Sale at the Bandon Public Library, 1204 11th St. SW. The painting is currently on display at Bandon Library. Raffle tickets, $1 each or six for $5, are available at the library's check-out counter.

Olds' work has been on display at local galleries and other venues, and is privately collected. She recently was awarded her own show at the Art by the Sea Gallery. This will take place in January 2020.

Olds paints largely from photographs. Over the

years, she has also taught oil painting classes in many parts of the country and in varied settings, including schools, galleries and stores. Her classes are primarily landscape and seascape painting. She has owned an art supply store in Mendocino County, Calif.

Olds has been a lifelong advocate for the many benefits of creative expression and has seen many lives transformed through the process of self-discovery. She says that works of art outlive the artist.

Be sure to visit the library to view her painting. Buying raffle tickets gives an opportunity to own a beau-tiful, original piece of art and support the library.

Painting raffle to benefit Library

BANDON — Brenda Brainard, director of Native Studies in Eugene, returns to the Bandon Public Library for three days in October.

At 3 p.m., Friday, Oct. 25, Brainard will share tradi-tional native storytelling at the library. Enjoy her myths and origin stories.

Brainard's workshops are popular, as she offers hands-on instruction of traditional creations in small group settings. Many of the materials used are harvested and prepped by hand by Brainard months in advance.

From 10 a.m.-4 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 26, the public is invited to create a traditional cedar doll. Choose unique styles and colors using raffia, strawtex and yarn for weaving the clothes. The finished doll is 7 inches tall.

The materials cost is $40.From 10 a.m.-4 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 27, Brainard will

lead a cedar basket weaving workshop. This is a free-form basket using wire and cedar and is 7 inches tall. The materials cost is $55.

Spend a day with Brainard in a small group and enjoy the process of creation. The basket and the doll are perfect to gift or keep.

Register in advance at the Bandon Public Library or by calling 541-347-3221. Each workshop is small so those interested are advised to register soon.

"We hope you'll join us for these special events," said assistant librarian Sara Michael.

BANDON — “It’s a chance for people to see our museum in a different light,” said Gayle Nix, director of the Bandon Historical Society Museum.

“The Night at the Museum,” a ticketed after-hours social, will take place at the museum from 5-7 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 17.

A limited number of tickets are on sale at the museum for $10. Tickets will be available at the door if supplies last.

The event is sponsored by Robin and Geneva Miller and organized by Lori Osborne of The Beverage Barn.

“We know a lot of people with 9 to 5 jobs have a hard time visiting during our 10 to 4 hours,” said Nix.

“We’ve put together an after-hours event that’s both a social time and a time to talk about history and will raise a little money for us.”

The event will combine a social mixer with his-torical conversation and complimentary snacks and beverages.

“Often, our program format is a speaker talking to an audience, but this is a little different. This will be more like the discussion after the speech, but without the speech. And there will be tasty snacks and adult beverages,” said museum board member Jim Proehl.

The museum is located at the corner of U.S. Highway 101 and Fillmore Avenue.

BANDON — Join Bandon resident Bob Eck as he takes the audience on a journey of four Peace Corps experiences at 3 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 19, at the Bandon Public Library, 1204 11th St. SW.

Eck was an English teacher in Kenya, East Africa in the mid 1970s. He lived on two different sites — the Ethiopian border and the slopes of Mount Kenya. He will even teach a little Swahili to the audience.

"My time spent in Kenya was the happiest two years of my life," Eck said.

Eck will also share his Peace Corps assignment in Kabul in 1977. He will highlight his visit to the largest

Buddhist statues in the world in the Bamiyan Valley, which were destroyed by the Taliban in 2001.

In the early 1980s Eck returned to Africa as a nurse in a maternal-child clinic in Liberia, West Africa. He will share his unique experiences in Liberia and how they differed from his time in Kenya. Eck will conclude with his return to Kenya after 33 years and visits with his former students, to his old school and village.

"I spoke in front of the student body and it was an amazing experience," he said. He is still in contact with his former students.

BANDON — She’s coming to Bandon, riding on the winds with her magic umbrella, Mary Poppins. She’s on the lookout for those children who haven’t learned the lessons of charity and responsibility. Meet her in person at the Sprague Community Theater in City Park in Bandon when New Artists Productions presents "Mary Poppins Jr."

A cast of 43 young actors from the South Coast — from Reedsport to Brookings and cities in between invite their audiences to London to witness Mary Poppins, who will be here along with all the well-known favorite characters.

Audience members also will be treated to a new and rising star who has only recently joined New Artists Productions, Abby Wilson. Abby was discovered during the production of “Lion King Junior” where she played an inquisitive hyena. She auditioned for the part of Mary Poppins, surprising everyone with her vocal abilities.

“It’s always exciting to discover a new and natural talent,” said Dan Almich, who with his wife Anita, is directing and producing the play.

"Mary Poppins, Jr." tells the tale of a magical English nanny, who is blown in by an east wind to reveal

to the Banks family the joy and harmony that is over-looked by their day to day activities.

This two-act production is based on a series of chil-dren’s books written by P.L. Travers and the 1964 classic Walt Disney film of the same title.

“The cast members have put their hearts, souls, and nine months of their time into this performance,” said Dan Almich. “Several members have taken voice and dance lessons to help solidify their presentations and to master their performances. We couldn’t be more proud to have this cast presenting the play.”

“Mary Poppins Jr.” will be presented at the Sprague Community Theater, 1202 11th St. SW in Bandon City Park beginning Friday, Oct. 18 and running two week-ends through Oct. 27. Show times are 7 p.m. Fridays and Saturdays and 2 p.m. Sundays. Tickets are also available at Bandon True Value and Bandon Mercantile and cost $10 general admission, $8 for senior citizens, and $5 for students and children (K-12).

For more information, call the Almichs at 541-347-2517.
