TWD Tipperary War Dead by Tom & Ruth Burnell – again the numbers (e.g. 015) refer to the pages where the information was found.
Details from 1901 & 1911 Census are used to give some info on the family circumstances.
The emergence of the newly launched In Flanders Fields website with its listing of the 49,000 plus Irish Casualties http://imr.inflandersfields.be/search.html is a welcome help as was the Commonwealth War Graves Commission (CWGC).
Some additions to the list and/or background information have been made following submissions of evidence from family members.
On the following three pages is a list of the fallen recovered so far and the page on which the details to date have been written.
If anyone has more information on any of these heroes, I would be delighted to add the information to this here.

Son of William and Isabella Adair, Carrol's Row. Born in Roscrea
REFERENCE BDT001 & TWD015
Thomas Adair, a member of the Church of Ireland community, was one of seven children born to William and Isabella Adair of Carroll’s Row, Roscrea. 1911 Census informs us that Mr. & Mrs. Adair were married for 37 years with 5 surviving children. Mr. Adair (62) was a stonemason – currently unemployed. Two of Thomas’ brothers were skilled stonemasons also and unemployed. Thomas at 33 is listed as single and a general labourer. In the 1901 census, Thomas is listed as a mason. The family had a lodger in 1911 – one Thomas Howe a general labourer. From the fact that the fifth child mentioned in the 1911 census as living is missing from both records, one may assume that s/he was an older child that had already left the family circle by 1901.

Born in Aldershot, but married to Elizabeth M. F. Baird of Ash Brook, Roscrea.
REFERENCE TWD023
Commonwealth War Graves Commission records David as Son of Capt. David Baird, of Ullard House, Borris, Co. Carlow. I have found very little else so far. It would appear that he may have been of Scottish extraction. There are no references to a Baird family in Roscrea during the census years - or indeed could I find one for Carlow. One can only assume that his wife, Elizabeth of Ashbrook, Roscrea met him either Ireland or England. I still have to find out the maiden name of Elizabeth.

John's parents had been married twenty-eight years. John was a member of a family of originally ten children; the 1911 census records that 7 were still living but there are records of only five boys on the return. John was listed as a general labourer as was his father. The 1901 census tells us that the family was living in Monaincha with their Grandmother - a Mrs Ellen Shortt. It also mentions a daughter Mary E who was 12 at the time but possibly was married by 1911. It is likely that there was an older sibling that had left before 1901.

A trawl through the census figures for 1901 reveals only two Bannon Families in total residing in Roscrea with children called Michael - both of which resided in Monaincha. It is highly possible that they were cousins as the father of this Michael would have been Patrick, 49 years old in 1901 and a widower with eight children ranging in age from 20 down to 8 years, while the father of the other two Bannon casualties was John now aged 40. Michael was 9 at the time. When we look for the family in the 1911 census Michael is not to be found. The father Patrick is still residing in Monaincha with a son and two daughters. It would be likely that Michael had emigrated. If this is the Michael above, he would have been 26 at the time of death. Baptismal records state his birthdate as 9/1/1892

Son of John and Anne Barry (Neé Mulhall). In 1901 the family was residing in Limerick Street. At this time Christopher was 2. The family then consisted of 4 children - 2 boys and 2 girls - the youngest girl was just 9 months old. John's occupation was a nailer. In 1911 the family had moved to Alley's Lane and the family had grown to 4 girls and 2 boys and Daniel Mulhall - Anne's father was living with them. This would mean that Christopher was just 21 when he was killed in action. Parish records state his birthday as 25/12/1898 in Limerick Street.

Frederick was the son of William and Elizabeth Bennett, Gortmullen
REFERENCE BDT013 & TWD029
Frederick was the son of William and Elizabeth Bennett, Gortmullen. Mr Bennett was a farmer with his lands at Gortmullen. The 1911 census records they had been married for thirty-six years with eleven children surviving out of thirteen births. Frederick was 5 in 1901. While not a casualty of WW1 per se, he's recorded here because both other references have included him - probably because he had enlisted during the war and his subsequent death could be linked to this, dying as a result of wounds. He is the only WW1 casualty buried in Roscrea

Might possibly be a relative to Frederick. If he was a brother - there is only one Robert mentioned in the census returns, he was born in 1900 - the 1901 Census records a Robert as being a year old. It doesn't seem plausible as if so, he would be only 16 when he was killed - making him the youngest soldier of the Roscrea Records so far to die in battle - not to mention that he was a father into the bargain! It is more likely that he had emigrated prior to census.

Son of Michael Bergin & Mary (nee Hill) Mill Owner, Fancroft, Roscrea. His brother John is listed as his next of kin
REFERENCE BDT013 & TWD030
Much is written on the exploits of Fr. Michael in both of the reference books quoted here. The following information has been sourced and condensed from the Jesuits website commemorating those who served as chaplains etc.:
Michael Bergin, born in Roscrea (at Fancroft Mill), schooled in Mungret, an Irish Jesuit chaplain with the Australian Imperial Force, which he joined as a trooper (stretcher-bearer) in the 5th Light Horse, in order to accompany the Australians to Gallipoli. Bergin requested to be a chaplain in the Australian Forces however the Australians were initially unsure of this Irish Jesuit, who served in the Lyons Province and had no connection to Australia. He was the only member of the whole AIF never to have set foot in Australia and
Compiled by Dick Conroy - Roscrea Casualties of the First World War Page 27 of 171
the only Catholic chaplain serving with the AIF to have died as a result of enemy action. He always aimed to be where his men were in greatest danger, and having survived the Turkish campaign he was killed by a German shell on the Ypres salient in Flanders. The citation for the Military Cross awarded read: “Padre Bergin is always to be found among his men, helping them when in trouble, and inspiring them with his noble example and never-failing cheerfulness.” The Jesuit site points out the fact that his death as 11th Oct is on his tomb while most records quote it as being on the 12th because he was injured on the 11th but died a short time later on the 12th. The following appears in the Biographical Dictionary of Tipperary: BERGIN, Fr. Michael. Chaplain; soldier. Born: close to Roscrea, Co. Tipperary, 16th August 1879. He was one of five children, the son of Michael and Mary Bergin. While the family was not well-off, they placed a high value on education. The children were sent to Sacred Heart Convent in Roscrea. Michael was very close to his brother Jack. Michael entered the Jesuit College in Mungret, Co. Limerick and remained there till he was 17. In 1897 Michael entered the Jesuit Noviceship in Tullbeg, Co. Carlow and was later sent to Syria where he studied for nine years in the University of Beyrouth.
He was asked to travel to England in 1908 and in 1909 he visited his sick father in Ireland. His father died when he returned to England. Michael was ordained on the 24th August 1910, after which he worked in England for a couple of years giving retreats and missions throughout the country. He visited the Sacred Heart Convent in Cairo and heard of an Australian Regiment stationed there. The soldiers had no Catholic clergymen with them so Fr. Michael accompanied them to Gallipoli. He was unable to continue as their chaplain as a minister had not yet been chosen. Fr. Michael then joined the regiment as a soldier – Trooper Bergin. He ministered to the men and carried out his duties as a soldier till the Australian authorities chose him as chaplain. Fr. Michael was a frail man, but this did not deter him from carrying stretchers and digging graves as several men died in the terrible battles between the
Compiled by Dick Conroy - Roscrea Casualties of the First World War Page 28 of 171
Australians and the Turks.
It was not an easy life and Fr. Michael wrote to his family telling them of the tragic experiences of war. He died from a shell close to Zonnebike, North East of Ypres on the 11th October 1917. He is buried near the church in Renninghelst. Following his death the Australians in respect of his dedicated service awarded him their highest army recognition, “The Cross of Honour”.

Professor Fr. Michael Bergin, S.J., M.C.(1879 – 1917)
Fr. M. Bergin
Fr. Bergin won a military cross posthumously for his work as chaplain and as stretcher-bearer with the Fifth Light Horse Brigade.
Fr Michael was well travelled and born in Fancroft, near Roscrea, Co Tipperary, schooled in Mungret College Limerick, an Irish Jesuit chaplain with the Australian Imperial Force, which he joined as a trooper (stretcher bearer) to the 5th Light Horse, in order to accompany the Australians to Gallipoli.
He was the only Australian chaplain to have joined in the ranks, the only one never to set foot in Australia and the only Catholic chaplain to have died with the AIF (Australian Imperial Force). The citation for the Military Cross awarded posthumously (although based on recommendation
prior to his death), reads: “Padre Bergin is always to be found among his men, helping them when in trouble, and inspiring them with his noble example and never-failing cheerfulness.”
Fr Michael’s grave maker at Passchendaele, Belgium, gives the dates of his death as the 11th October. All official records indicate he died on the 12th October.
Irish Times Article

But then, in general, war is never as neat as myth-
makers would like. Consider the case of Fr Michael
Bergin, one of the many whose heroics Australians will
celebrate tomorrow. A Jesuit priest, Fr Bergin won a
military cross posthumously for his work as chaplain
and stretcher-bearer with the Fifth Light Horse
Brigade. But not only was he Irish. He never so much
as set foot in the country he served.
He was certainly well travelled. Born near Roscrea, Co
Tipperary, he went to the Middle East as a missionary
and teacher, first working in Syria, where he learned
Arabic. He had moved to Cairo by January 1915 when
the first Australian troops arrived there. And by the
time the Aussies left for Gallipoli, he was with them,
dressed in a private’s uniform.

One was 61 years of age and lived in Ballinure, Blackrock, Cork while the other is an 8-year-old living in Templemore Street, Pottinger, Co. Down. This entry is most likely to be the Robert listed here but his connection to Roscrea remains unsourced so far. There is no mention of the John Boylan above but the 1911 census records Mrs. Boylan - then 51 as being a widow who had been married for 21 years and having 11 children 8 of whom were still alive. It would suggest that possibly following John's death about 1900 that they moved to Roscrea. By 1911 the family had shrunk to 4 children still at home and all "scholars" with Laurence being the eldest at 17, closely followed by Johanna the only girl still at home at 14.

The Census returns of 1901 & 1911 have William and members of his family living with his Grandmother Allamalia Purefray on Morehampton Road, Dublin. The records show that the grandmother and mother were born in Tipperary, so it's possible that they moved to Dublin in the latter years of the 19th Century. The 1901 census reveals that Henry (now 7) was residing with his uncle, William Greed. His mother Mary, was William's younger sister. The Brien’s had three in family - one boy (Henry) and two girls - Mary 8 and Kate 6. The census of 1911 tells us that James and Mary - Henry's parents, had been then married for 20 years with three children. Henry, it appears, was an only son (then 17 years old).

There is no census information to be found on Thomas. On checking the Soldier’s Wills section of the National Archives, it appears that he may have immigrated to England following his enlisting as his will records his address as 6, Cobden Place, Canterbury.
The Roscrea Baptismal Records have Thomas being born 23/11/1870 to Thomas (Labourer) and Maria (nee McDonnell) of Dublin Road. He attended the boy’s school in 1879. This would mean Thomas was 46 when he was killed.

The census of 1901 tells us that the family lived at Tullaskeagh and Patrick, Thomas' father was a Quarter-Master Sergeant. It also gives information stating that they had a total of six children who were born in Kildare, Tipperary, Down and England - one would assume reflecting Patrick's postings. Thomas' birthplace is given as England and at this time he was the youngest in the family at four years of age. There is no listing for the family in the 1911 census, so it can be assumed that they were posted elsewhere - eventually arriving at Whitechurch, Salop
.

There is no mention of the family in the 1901 Census. They do appear in the 1911 census, but by this time Eugene appears to have left the family. In 1901, the only Eugene that fits the age profile is residing at House 14.6 in Upper Tyrone Street (North Dock, Dublin). He is 26 years of age and consequently might be this Eugene.

The wording of soldier’s wills seems to have been dictated by their officers as all of the wills have almost
the exact same wording. Thomas’ will declares “ In the event of my death I give the whole of my property and effects to my wife Mrs. E. Sharpe The Grange Lucan Co. Dublin Ireland”. What this seems to suggest that Thomas had made his home in Lucan. The fact that he enlisted in Manchester seems to suggest he was there for a time possibly working or seeking work.

In a section of the 1911 Census taken on the Channel Islands supplied to me by Jacki Lee. Patrick is listed as from Roscrea, Co. Wexford!!!! It states he was then 21 then which would make him 25 when he was killed. Another item of interest is that it demonstrates that he was a soldier prior to the outbreak of the war – as were many more!
