TheeThekwini DeclarationwasadoptedbyAfricanMinistersattheAfricaSanConferenceonSanitationandHygieneinFebruary2008,andendorsedbyAfricanUnionHeadsofStatesinJuly.Amongotherthings,theeThekwini DeclarationcommitsAfricangovernmentstocreateseparatebudgetlinesandallocateatleast0.5percentofGDPtosanitationandhygiene.WSProlesinclude:

WSP-AFhasstartedtacklingWSSissuesinfragilestatesandhasaspecificprojectinFY10aimedatstartingactualengagementinitiallyinBurundi,LiberiaandZimbabwe.Possibleengagementinadditionalcountries(Angola,SierraLeoneandSudan).Objectivesareto:identifyandsupportimplementationofserviceimprovementstargetingcriticalsocialneeds;and,fosterthetransitionfromemergencyhumanitarianinterventionstocoordinatedsectorprogramswithlongerterminstitutionalobjectives.
Improving WSS services in Towns
WSP-AFwillexpandengagementtosupportprogramsforimprovingaccesstoWSSservicesbyTownpopulations.TherecentlydevelopedAfricaTownsWaterandSanitationInitiative(ATWASI)seekstoassistcountriesmakeasignificantpushintownWSSbeforethe2015goalofMDG7.WSPwilladoptathree-prongedstrategytoATWASIimplementation:countryimplementationsupport;learningandknowledgeexchange;and,advocacy.
