3. Introduction to Wrocław University of Technology SPIE Student Chapter Activities in academic year
2014/2015
Wrocław University of Technology SPIE Student Chapter was established at the beginning of 2003. Since that time, we
are still very active, organizing and participating in both outreach and professional development events. Because of
that our chapter is very well recognizable at our University.
Our goals in academic year 2014/2015 was to keep the number of outreach activities and at the same time increase
number of professional development events. This is why we decided to organize OPTO-Meeting for Young Researchers
and 10th Anniversary International SPIE Student Chapter Meeting 2015 Conference called OPTO2015. After 7 years the
OPTO2015 conference went back to Wroclaw, were its history started in 2005. Additionally we were co-organizer of
SPIE Focus Armenia – 3rd International Symposium “Optics and its Applications”.
We would like to emphasize two more events from this academic year. First, Vision screening tests on kindergarten
children, one of our cyclic events. This year we invited Visus – visual optics science circle to support our chapter
members. During five weeks we were able to test sight of over 320 children between 3 and 6 years old. We are very
proud, that every year we are increasing number of tested children. Second event is Laser Khet 2.0 Tournament, which
we organized for the 3rd time. This edition was organized with official support of game producer. We strongly believe
that such kind of events are the best way to encourage people to optics, especially when we celebrate International
Year of Light.
Of course our 2014/2015 schedule was fulfilled with many more events, attracting children from kindergartens
through primary and high schools, up to students and adults. All of them are listed below.
We believe that chapter is best place to develop new skills and knowledge, gain experience, meet new interesting
people, exchange ideas and through all of this, improve ourselves as students, scientists and humans.
On behalf of Wrocław University of Technology SPIE Student Chapter,
Mateusz Szatkowski

October 2014 Primary School no
113, Wrocław 5 75
For the purposes of classes "Lights and Shadows" we prepared a set of experiments that pupils of the first class may
carry out by themselves. Lecturers explained the instructions, the children experimented, and then come together to
the conclusions. Who says that learning in the first grade is no longer fun?
At the beginning of the first class children discover that learning can be really interesting

Preparing classes "Lights and Shadows" for younger children may be a little more difficult, but also the reaction of
small children on even the simplest experiments is more impulsive. Each class of young experimenters is a great
satisfaction for us.
Children from four different age groups worked differently, but with no less enthusiasm
4.3. Classes "Why superconductivity is and interesting phenomenon?"

While the classes "Why superconductivity is an interesting phenomenon?" we collaborated with the lecturer from
Wroclaw University of Technology. High school students had an opportunity to attract with physical phenomena and
the questions falling from the audience were extremely interesting.
Introductory lecture and experimental classes on the superconductivity have interested the high school students

During the Open Days of School Complex No. 1 we prepared a classes "Paths of Illusion". Students of junior high school
that day had an opportunity to know better profiles of classes in high school. We gave them an opportunity to find out
more about optics.
The Paths of Illusions have gained the attention of the junior high school students

During the “XX series of lectures popularizing physics” our members gave two lectures: “Optical technologies are closer
to us than you think” and “This mysterious eye - how do we see?”. The audience were not only people related with
the university, but all of them were concerned with these issues.

In cooperation with members of Visual Optics Group [VOG; optometrists] and “Visus – the visual optics chapter” we
invited students of optometry to perform vision screening tests on a group of children. We performed three kinds of
test: visual acuity, binocular and color vision. During five weeks we managed to test over 320 children in age of 3 to 6
years old. All parents of the examined children got the information about recommended (or not) further control of
eye sight.
We always try to convince children that there is nothing to be afraid of and that they can have a lot of fun as well
