1INTRODUCTION

The Oxford Dictionary of English defines a toxin as "a poison of plant or animal origin, especially one produced by or derived from microorganisms and acting as an antigen in the body."

IF WE UNPACK THIS DEFINITION, WE SEE THAT IT MAKES THREE STRONG CLAIMS ABOUT TOXINS:

• They are poisonous.

• They are produced by plants or animals, especially by microscopic organisms like bacteria, viruses, fungi,

proteins, peptides, and other small molecules.

• They either damage cells or tissue in the body, or they trigger the immune system to produce antibodies, or

both.

Our Toxic WorldCHAPTER

6DETOXIFICATION: MORE THAN JUST A BUZZWORD

A ccordingly, bee stings, spider venom, stinging nettle, poisonous

mushrooms, mouldy food, and malignant tumours are all toxins.

While technically correct, this definition excludes many of the

substances that are present in our environment that might harm

our bodies. Think, for example, of the pesticides in our fruit and vegetables, the

industrial chemicals in our processed food, the herbicides in our gardens, the

lead in our children's toys, the formaldehyde in our beauty products, the BPA and

phthalates in the flexible plastic products around our homes, and so forth. These

harm cells and tissue in the human body, they are all around us, but they are

excluded from the official definition because they are chemicals that are artificially

produced in factories rather than biologically produced by plants and animals.

This report will employ the term "toxin" in this wider sense, because it is concerned

with health and strategies to remain healthy. But when you visit the pedantic side

of your family, it is worth remembering that the official definition includes only

poisons produced by animals and plants.

TYPES OF TOXINS

Food Toxins

Fruit and vegetables that are not organically cultivated contain traces of the pesticides with which the growing produce were protected.

Research has linked these to a slight increase in a wide

variety of disorders. These include decreased fertility,

allergies, birth defects, cancer, and many more. So,

if you can afford to buy organic meat, eggs and fresh

produce, do so and cut the risk to zero.

Food preservatives are commonplace, partly because

food needs to be transported and stored for long

periods before they are eaten, and partly because

food manufacturers are worried about lawsuits if their

customers fall ill.

Butylated Hydroxyanisole (BHA) and Butylated

Hydroxytoluene (BHT) are two petroleum-derived

preservatives judged to be carcinogenic by the

International Agency for Research on Cancer. They are

usually added to oily foods to delay rancidity, and are

also used in jet fuel and embalming fluid.

Sodium nitrite is used as a corrosion inhibitor in

industrial grease, as a component of rubber, and as an

additive in deli meats to preserve them and to give them

their reddish-pink colour; no joke, seriously!

In fact, synthetic forms of astaxanthin, the artificial

additive that is often sold as the same as natural

astaxanthin types (which is the type found naturally

in the skin of salmon fish and krill and is the only

type with health benefits), is actually made from

petrochemicals and has unsurprisingly been linked to

cancer.

A recent study found that over a thousand additives

were used in food products without the knowledge of

the required American and European safety regulators.

Many of these are used to improve the product's' texture

and colour and are therefore basically unnecessary. The

World Health Organisation has gradually decreased the

amount of sodium aluminium sulphate and potassium

aluminium sulphate which their researchers think

consumers can consume safely.

They can be found in many packaged edibles such as

baking powder, crisps, processed cheese, and so forth.

Some artificial vanilla flavourings are made from paper

mill waste.

Hydrogenated oils (which are a source of the worst type

of fat for health, trans fat), are the substances that keep

your margarine and mayonnaise reasonably solid at

room temperature, but they are also the substances that

Page 8: Written By AMY MORRIS DNN - Great Health Naturally · MORE THAN JUST A BUZZ WORD Detoxification Written By Naturopathic Nutritionist AMY MORRIS DNN Why Your Body Depends On It Sponsored

8DETOXIFICATION: MORE THAN JUST A BUZZWORD

might give you diabetes, cancer, and heart disease.

Emulsifiers are useful when you are trying to combine

substances that do not hang together when mixed,

somewhat similarly to the use of eggs in a recipe to bind

together the flour and water. They are commonly used

in low-fat products and binders like xanthan gum and

egg replacers. Their ingredients include vegetable fat

and organic acids, which complicates any diet that is

meant to be alkaline. The list of unnatural, industrial,

and potentially unhealthy additives is too long to

discuss here but further research into them is definitely

advisable if you wish to live a long and happy life, free

of disease.

The most popular flavour enhancer continues to be

monosodium glutamate (MSG), a substance that can

be found in almost all foods and that can cause severe

allergies.

The debate around genetically modified foods will not

die down anytime soon. The least controversial claims

one can probably make is to say, firstly, that no studies

exist on the health effects of eating these organisms

over the long-term and, secondly, that genetic variations

of these foods differ just enough to render a study on

the safety of one type irrelevant to the safety of another.

As always, when in doubt, steer clear of risks and keep

it natural.

Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons are carcinogens

that are produced when fat burns, so watch that grill

carefully next time for flare-ups.

Food packaging is not always safe either. Researchers

recently found phthalates, a highly acidic industrial

chemical used in plastic, in every single one of the

foods they tested. Bisphenol A, contained in food and

beverage can linings, has been found in food too, and

so have some flame retardants often found in paper

wrapping.

Beverage Toxins

High fructose corn syrup, especially in the amounts contained in soft drinks and cereals, has long been associated with an increased risk of heart disease and diabetes.

Alcoholic drinks and caffeine-containing coffee and tea are toxins when they are

consumed in large amounts. They interfere with the body's natural regulation of

heart rate and blood pressure, they erode the stomach lining, they reduce normal

liver function, and they cause confusion, motor impairment, and deterioration of

various other normal functions.

Our tap water contains a wide variety of chemicals. Fluoride is deliberately put

in the water to combat tooth decay. Chlorine is placed in the water to kill bacteria

and clean it. Arsenic and pesticides usually accidentally enter the water supply from

the ground and overland, while mercury and lead can enter the water either from the

ground or from old water pipes. There is little evidence that small amounts of these

chemicals are harmful, but too little is known about constant exposure to deem

it definitely harmless. Research certainly shows all these chemicals to be harmful

when ingested in large amounts, and there have been no studies documenting the

effects to health when these chemicals are combined.

Household Product Toxins

Consult the labels of most of your common household cleaners, and you will find a warning that they are hazardous to humans and domestic animals. Interestingly, that does not put anyone off from using them, simply because we all blindly believe they are safe so long as we refrain from drinking them.

The phthalates in air fresheners, soap, and dish washing liquid, among other

cleaners, have been linked with decreased fertility and endocrine disruptions.

Perchloroethylene, found in carpet and upholstery cleaners, is quite possibly

carcinogenic and is in fact being phased out completely as a result.

There are few cleaners that are free of ammonia, a substance that can cause asthma

and skin irritation.

Quarternary ammonium compounds, found in almost all household cleaners, can

irritate the skin and respiratory system. The sodium hydroxide that is so effective at

oven and drain cleaning also burns your eyes and gives you a sore throat and lungs

when inhaled.

2-butoxyethanol, a chemical ingredient commonly used in alcohol disinfectants,

is readily absorbed following inhalation, oral or dermal exposure and can cause

pulmonary edema and damage the kidney and liver when inhaled. This

chemical has moderate acute toxicity and is also irritating to the eyes and skin. A risk

assessment concluded that chronic exposure could also alter blood in ways associated

with hemolytic anemia.

The handy resealable plastic containers in your kitchen probably leak phthalates into

your food. Some non-stick pans contain perfluorooctanoic acid, a toxin that causes

cancer in animals; use stainless steel or cast iron cooking pans instead. Wooden

cutting boards on which you slice meat and chicken have absorbed harmful bacteria

that can make you sick, which is why most health organisations recommend you use

plastic boards for raw meat. The plastic water bottles in your fridge probably leak

BPA, which can harm your endocrine system.

The weed-killers in your garden and the insect killers in and around your house

contain ingredients that can kill; that is the point of their use, after all. The potential

effects of some of these ingredients include skin irritation, kidney damage, vomiting,

and interference with the normal functioning of the central nervous system.

The flame retardants that are used in your furniture, such as polybrominated diphenyl

ethers, formaldehyde, and perfluorooctanoic acid, can cause various diseases from

thyroid and liver damage to cancer.

Cosmetics, personal cleaning products, and perfumes contain literally hundreds of

chemicals that have not been tested, primarily because manufacturers do not want to

tip off their competitors by publicising their recipes.

You can probably expect some potentially harmful

triclosan and triclocarban in your soap, retinyl

palmitate, retinyl acetate, retinoic acid and retinol in

your moisturizer, formaldehyde and formalin in your

nail care products, and an enormous number of other

chemicals that make you look and smell good, but

that could be toxic.

Environmental Toxins

Most cities and towns are covered by large clouds of smoke that consist of carbon dioxide, carbon monoxide, methane, butane, hydrogen chloride, nitrous oxide, and many other toxic gasses emitted by factories and vehicles.

Nitrous oxide, for example, causes sleepiness and is even used as an anaesthetic in combination with other

substances. Hydrogen chloride causes choking and inflammation of the nose, throat, and upper respiratory tract.

Carbon monoxide causes headache, vomiting, seizure, coma, and death.

Unfortunately, our homes are often even more toxic. Second-hand smoke, radon from the radioactive decay of

radium in the rocks under our homes, mold that releases allergenic spores into the air, paint fumes, acrogenic and

formaldehyde from over-heated cooking oil, carbon monoxide from faulty furnaces, hair from our beloved pets,

various gasses from cleaning products and air fresheners, dust and bacteria that lurk in carpets, almost anything

imaginable from old over-used air-conditioning filters, and very many other potential horrors render our homes

much less safe than we believe them to be.

At best, such as in the cases of pet hair and mold, these cause our immune systems to over-react and produce

antibodies that resemble the symptoms of flu and skin diseases. Second-hand smoke and radon cause cancer.

Carbon monoxide is deadly.

Most people permanently live inside a giant electromagnetic field created by their smart phones, tablets,

wireless home networks, wireless office networks, cordless phones, cordless keyboards, cordless earphones,

televisions, and those enormous piles of remote controls that take over our modern coffee tables. All studies that

prove the safety of these devices tested their short-term use. Nothing is at this stage known about their long-term

safety.

Medical Toxins

The long list of potential side effects on every hard drug should alert you to the fact that they can be toxic.

Prolonged use of cortisone, those ever-reliable anti-inflammatory and anti-allergy drugs, causes a loss in bone

density. Anti-depressants cause anything from insomnia to weight gain to loss of libido. Penicillin can cause

anaphylactic shock. Testosterone replacement therapy can cause heart attacks. Most hard drugs can cause

nausea and diarrhoea. The side effects of chemotherapy are notoriously hard to live with.

Given their destructive and potentially deadly effects on the body, it is clear that lifestyle drugs like nicotine,

alcohol, caffeine, amphetamines, ecstasy, LSD, heroin, and many others may be toxins, especially when taken in

large amounts. Most of them increase blood pressure and heart rate in situations where it is unnecessary. Excessive

perspiration, manic energy, insomnia, fatigue, depression, confusion, loss of motor

functions, and their many other symptoms indicate that they interfere with normal bodily

functions.

Some medical implants have proved to be toxic. An increasing number of European

countries are banning mercury amalgam tooth fillings, due to the fact that they

leak enough mercury to bring about tremors, insomnia, memory loss, headaches,

loss of concentration, and so on. In 2015, these are still legal in Britain. Titanium,

which is used in many dental and other surgical implants, can lead to a toxic reaction

in some people who are unusually sensitive to metals. The wear and tear of poorly made

metal joint implants can leak cobalt and cause pain and inflammation around the joint,

as well as other tissue and bone damage. Most scientists believe silicone and saline

breast implants to be reasonably safe, even though manufacturers admit that over half

of those with implants suffer local symptoms like pain, infection, and tissue or implant

hardening. Worse still, through the years some unscrupulous manufacturers have

subordinated your health to their profits and created implants that were unsafe enough to

prompt their worldwide removal.

Lifestyle Toxins

Too much heavy exercise is not a toxin as such, but it is a lifestyle choice that prompts the body to produce its own toxins.

Firstly, some lactic acid is normal around the muscles during exercise; it is a

normal by-product of exercise. But a long single exercise session can cause a severe

accumulation of lactic acid in the muscles which causes acute pain and which the

body then struggles to remove. Secondly, strenuous exercise, especially with heavy

weights, causes microscopic tears in muscle tissue that subsequently heal in a

process that thickens and strengthens the tissue.

If muscles are forced to work hard on a seven-day-a-week exercise schedule that

allows no time for the tears to heal, the muscle protein myoglobin can leak from the

muscles into other body tissue, which is potentially fatal. Lactic acid and myoglobin

can thus become toxins if your exercise program is too intense.

Sleep deprivation is usually associated with the body's producing less of everything,

but it also triggers the body to produce too much of numerous hormones and

neurotransmitters that then become toxins. For example, the body of a sleep

deprived person produces more ghrelin (an appetite stimulant), insulin (a fat-storing

hormone), cortisol (a stress hormone), and C-reactive protein (an inflammatory

marker physicians use to predict the risk of heart disease). These substances usually

contribute to normal functioning, but sleep deprivation induces the body to produce

them in circumstances and quantities that are toxic and that cause long lists of

unpleasant symptoms.

14DETOXIFICATION: MORE THAN JUST A BUZZWORDDETOXIFICATION: MORE THAN JUST A BUZZWORD

Emotional Toxins

Physicians often talk about negative emotions as toxic, precisely because they can cause serious health problems. Rage, hatred, resentment, stress, depression, guilt, and shame can cause insomnia, overeating or undereating,

an increase in blood pressure, an increased risk of heart disease, headaches, and numerous other unpleasant and

potentially fatal conditions that are basically avoidable if a person learns to manage their emotions and stress in a

healthy way.

Free Radicals

Your body uses countless cells to carry out all of its functions. Each of these cells is composed of molecules. When exposed to oxygen during a process called oxidation, the electrons in some of these molecules are damaged and unable to perform their functions.

This leads them to scavenge for intact electrons from neighbouring molecules. When they steal intact electrons

from neighbouring molecules, those damaged molecules then become free radicals, because they must scavenge

for intact electrons from their neighbouring molecules. Once enough molecules inside a cell have been left

with damaged electrons, the cell is broken and unable to perform its proper functions. Its molecules then start

scavenging for electrons from neighbouring cells' molecules and eventually damage enough of those molecules to

break neighbouring cells too. A cell-breaking chain reaction is then in progress.

Molecules with broken electrons are called free radicals because of their scavenging behaviour. When understood

as such, free radicals are not a type of toxin, but rather a type of behaviour in which toxins engage. In fact, all free

radicals are certainly not toxins, because your immune system employs some free radicals to damage the cells of

harmful organisms like viruses, bacteria, and malignant tumours. But many free radicals are indeed toxins, and

oxidation with its accompanying cell damage has been linked to cancer, Alzheimer's disease, arthritis, motor-

neurone disease, and many others.

15DETOXIFICATION: MORE THAN JUST A BUZZWORD

Damaged Fat Cells

Many of the toxins listed above have been found to contribute to weight gain and consequently to the developed world’s obesity epidemic. But the problem with fat does not end there. When toxins are trapped in the adipose tissue within which the body stores fat cells, they bind to gene signaling within that tissue and generate

new fat cells. These new fat cells are then also contaminated with the same toxins and are damaged and therefore incapable of producing leptin,

the protein that is normally produced by fatty tissue to regulate fat. Since the damaged fat cells then essentially impedes the body’s ability to

regulate its own fat storage, they become toxins too.

CONCLUSION

This list of the potential toxins ever-present in the 21st century is far from complete, but by now everyone should grasp the central point: our bodies are simply not capable of neutralising or removing all the toxins with which we come into contact. In poor countries, people's bodies often lose the battle against cholera, anaemia, malaria, polio, measles, tuberculosis, dysentery, and common

influenza. These are all caused by toxins, and the wealthy world has certainly not beaten most of these diseases by leaving our bodies to deal

with them without help. Balanced dieting, food reinforced with essential vitamins, relatively clean water and living conditions, and employing

natural and/or artificial medication, have all assisted our bodies to cope with those toxins and their accompanying diseases.

Similarly, diseases often associated with the developed world, such as Alzheimer's disease, autism, cancer, diabetes, cirrhosis, osteoporosis,

angina, depression, athlete's foot, muscular dystrophy, arthritis, hyper- and hypothyroidism, emphysema, leukaemia, Parkinson's disease,

motor-neuron disease, attention deficit disorder, herpes, behavioural disorders, schizophrenia, celiac disease, gastritis, hepatitis, anorexia

nervosa, thrombosis, asthma, Crohn's disease, multiple sclerosis, obesity, and many others, are often introduced into our bodies through toxins,

and these toxins cannot be defeated by our bodies alone. They need a lot of help.

The remainder of this report will show you how you can help your body to neutralise toxins and thereby give you the best possible chance to

escape the long list of developed world diseases that lead to so much misery and death.

INTRODUCTION

Chapter 3 will guide you through the various food types and supplements you can take to help your body to neutralise toxins. Before you start spending your hard-earned money on supplements, however, you must implement several general detoxification strategies to help various systems of your body cope. Most of these strategies are fully natural and consist of lifestyle changes that you can gradually introduce into your life.

GENERAL TOXIFICATION TECHNIQUES

Limit Exposure to Toxins

The first and most obvious step you should take is to limit your body's exposure to toxins. Work your way through the lists of toxins in Chapter 1 and devise strategies to avoid as many of them as possible.

FOR EXAMPLE:

• buy organic fruit and vegetables to avoid pesticides

• eat as much fresh food as possible to curtail chemical

preservatives

• eat as little processed food as possible to avoid additives

• read food labels to avoid harmful toxins

• buy a filter to clean your tap water

• research and buy natural domestic cleaners and cosmetics

• use better cookware and cutting boards

• keep your home and pets clean

• give up drinking and smoking

• take natural medication where possible

• exercise in moderation

• get enough sleep

• explore cognitive behavioural therapy and mindfulness

meditation to help you keep negative emotions to a minimum

This is the single most effective step you can take to protect your family's bodies and brains from toxins. Your body already has the ability to

fight toxins; if it did not, you would have died soon after birth. But its ability to fight toxins is overwhelmed by the number and types of toxins

with which it needs to deal with in this modern day world.

As it is thanks to the boom of the not so well regulated chemical industry, that is responsible for the 80,000 chemicals used daily to manufacture

our everyday household and beauty products that we are all so reliant upon. But if you avoid as many toxins as possible, it frees up your body to

fight the toxins that remain more effectively.

18DETOXIFICATION: MORE THAN JUST A BUZZWORD

I f you read through the examples of developed world diseases at the end of chapter 1, you will see that toxins attack the whole body. Read

through the list and see if you can match the diseases with the various systems in the body: the heart and blood circulation system, the

liver, the muscular system, the lungs, the skin, the digestive system, the endocrine system, the bones and joints, the nervous system, and

the brain. Here is some help:

• The heart and blood circulation system: thrombosis, angina, and leukaemia.

• The muscular system: muscular dystrophy and motor neuron disease.

• The liver: cirrhosis, hepatitis, and cancer.

• The lungs: emphysema, asthma, and cancer.

• The skin: herpes, athlete's foot, and cancer.

• The digestive system: celiac disease, Crohn's disease, gastritis, obesity, and cancer.

• The endocrine system: diabetes, hyper- and hypothyroidism, and cancer.

• The bones and joints: osteoporosis, arthritis, and cancer.

• The nervous system: Parkinson's disease, motor neuron disease, and multiple sclerosis.

• The brain: attention deficit disorder, depression, behavioural disorders, schizophrenia, Alzheimer's disease, autism, anorexia nervosa, and

cancer.

The brain and nervous system are actually uniquely strongly threatened by toxins, because most toxins are lipid-soluble while brain

and nervous system cells are composed primarily of lipids. This literally means that toxins dissolve in those cells and destroy them. It

is therefore incredibly important to keep your environment as clean as possible of toxins so your body can employ its limited resources to fight

the toxins that genuinely are unavoidable.

Exercise

While most people sigh when receiving this advice, exercise is recommended for a wide range of ailments precisely because it works so well.

The first way it helps with toxins is that it dilates the lungs, thereby allowing more

oxygen to circulate through the body. The effective circulation of oxygen is crucial to

develop and repair cells and to remove waste material.

Secondly, a lot of toxins that would otherwise be trapped in the body are excreted

with perspiration, so exercise vigorously.

Thirdly, the psychological effects of taking control of one's weight and noticing one's

fitness and muscle tissue increase can never be under-estimated. Working harder

at your job might not get you a promotion, taking those new cosmetics might not

improve your skin tone, but regular exercise will change your body composition. It

is, thus, the most certain way to take control of your life and reap the confidence that

goes with it. It goes a long way to minimising those toxic emotions.

Moreover, since your body produces more of the neurotransmitter serotonin during

exercise, and serotonin has been definitively linked with positive emotions, exercise

is doubly important to combat negative emotions.

Relax in a Sauna

When you warm your body, it forces a lot of blood towards the skin to promote the release of heat through the porous skin. A sauna can thereby promote better blood circulation to clear cells of old blood and increase the likelihood

that toxins in the blood will be excreted rather than stored. Furthermore, a moderately over-heated body is an

inhospitable environment for certain viruses and bacteria, which is why your body usually raises its temperature

when you are attacked by, for example, a flu virus.

Like exercise, a sauna promotes perspiration, which expels a lot of toxins. It also dilates the lungs to advance the

intake and circulation of oxygen.

Far infrared saunas are also becoming popular. They use far infrared rays that penetrate the skin down to the

subcutaneous tissue, which is the layer of fat that forms the deepest layer of the skin. When subcutaneous tissue

is heated, it releases chemicals that are then excreted through the skin in the form of perspiration. The chemicals

should immediately be washed off after the session. Some people sit for short ten minute sessions multiple times a

week.

Go for Regular Massages

Massage works in two ways: it is relaxing and can thereby assist you to combat stress, and it increases blood circulation through your body to move nutrients to their required locations remove dead decaying cells so they can ultimately be excreted.Go for regular massages at your local health spa. If you cannot afford that, introduce regular massages into your

romantic relationship. It can bring that closeness back into the relationship and allow you to spend time together

that is free of children, sexual tension, financial worries, and so on. If your partner is unwilling, get together with

a friend, study a massage guide, and perform it on each other. There are even circulation machines available to do

this for you.

21DETOXIFICATION: MORE THAN JUST A BUZZWORD

Drink Enough Water

Hydrated cells work better than dehydrated cells in almost all respects. Researchers have found that water drinkers have superior concentration, motivation, energy, physical stamina, and better functioning immune systems. Your immune system is crucially important in the fight against toxins, because it produces, releases, and uses

the antibodies that can often neutralise the toxins that invade your body. A well-functioning immune system

is the difference between overcoming and succumbing to influenza, measles, and diarrhoea, for example,

because it is able to neutralise the toxins that cause them.

Water drinkers also perspire and urinate more which, while annoying, excrete many toxins that the body is

subsequently freed from having to destroy.

Control Your Weight

Your body stores a lot of toxins in the fat cells that collect around your arms, stomach, buttocks, and legs.If you are currently overweight and wish to lose weight, ensure that you implement as many of these other

strategies as possible together with your new diet and exercise program. As your body burns the fat it has

stored, all the toxins stored in them will be released into your body. You want those to be excreted, rather than

re-absorbed.

22DETOXIFICATION: MORE THAN JUST A BUZZWORD

Regulate Your Bowel Movements

Like regular urination and perspiration, regular bowel movements release a lot of toxins that would otherwise be absorbed by your body. No one enjoys thinking of the intestines, for this is where half-digested food putrefies among, as researchers estimate, trillions of bacteria. It is disgusting to think about

precisely because it is disgusting. All this needs to be expelled, rather than recycled.

The most common techniques for keeping your bowel movements regular is to exercise, to drink a lot of water, and to eat lots of fibre. Your body cannot absorb water-

insoluble fibre, so it excretes it and other foods that surround it immediately. Water-insoluble fibre can be found especially in whole grain foods, dark leafy vegetables,

fruit, nuts, and seeds.

It is important to ensure that your bowels are functioning regularly before you start a detox program so that toxins that are freed during the program can be excreted

immediately, to avoid the risk of reabsorption. If the exercise, water, and fibre do not work, take a probiotic to establish regularity. A good probiotic, like Theralac or

Truflora, will stimulate the growth of the good bacteria in your intestines that will, in turn, crowd out the bad bacteria and help your body to absorb the nutrients in

your food and excrete the rest.

Alkalise Your Body

This is another strategy worth starting before embarking on a formal detox program. If your diet usually includes a lot of acidic food like meat, dairy, sugar, wheat, and gluten, you may want to switch to alkaline-forming food like vegetables, fresh herbs, fruit, gluten-free unrefined whole grains, some nuts, some seeds, and some pulses. There are several reasons why acidic bodies cannot be cleansed effectively. Acidic tissue, especially the amounts usually stored as fat, is itself toxic.

Acidic cells cannot consume the appropriate amount of oxygen and nutrients. An acidic environment is also a good breeding ground for bacteria, yeast, fungi, viruses,

and so forth. Lastly, an acidic body must work hard to maintain its blood alkaline level at the required alkaline pH, while an alkaline body does this effortlessly. This

stress placed on an acidic body is also toxic.

23DETOXIFICATION: MORE THAN JUST A BUZZWORD

Fast Periodically

Many of us think of water fasts when we hear the term "detoxification". The thinking behind a fast is similar to the thinking behind regular bowel movements. If the body struggles to free

itself of the putrefying food trapped in the digestive tract, as can be seen with many cases of constipation, do not

send any more food after it. Instead, drink only liquids for a short while and massage the digestive tract every hour

until the bowels get moving again. If the body receives no more food, it will absorb most of the food in the digestive

tract for use. All the liquids may help the rest to go down more smoothly.

A water fast will leave the body without some key electrolytes, vitamins, and minerals, however, which makes it

a bad idea. A better idea is to stick to drinking only freshly pressed organic vegetables juices, and the broth of a

large batch of homemade vegetable soup, that has had a little Himalayan salt added and herb rich soup stock. All

of these liquids will help your body to cope without the food you normally eat, be it for 1 day to 2 days, due to the

electrolytes they contain.

Remain focussed on the aim: the fast is aimed at clearing your digestive tract; it is not meant to be a weight loss

strategy. As such, observe it for anything between 24 and 48 hours, after which you should start gently introducing

solid foods again. For your digestive system to not be stressed out once you commence eating solid food again, it

is best to break the fast with alkalising vegetables first, then later in the day introduce a small portion of alkalising

grains and then last introducing any eggs or meat you previously consumed.

All meals should be eaten with plenty of alkalising vegetables, and plenty of purified water in between, going

forward to help prevent any recurrence of constipation or bowel sluggishness. If fasting in this way still does

not bring you any relief, then seek out a nutritionist who can help send you for the relevant testing that might

highlight you have a food allergy or intolerance causing your woes.

Clean Your Teeth

A recent study by the Alabama School of Dentistry showed that people with periodontal disease were at greater risk of stroke and cognitive decline. Streptococcus mutans, the most common bacteria in the mouth, has also been linked

with heart disease. Plaque and the bacteria that thrive on it do not remain in the

mouth. It spreads toxins throughout the body.

Brush your teeth after every meal or snack. Floss at least once a day. Another popular

technique is oil pulling, which involves swirling some coconut or olive oil around

your mouth for a few minutes to draw the bacteria from parts of your mouth that

dental hygiene devices cannot reach. You must spit out the oil once you are done.

Clean Your Skin

Your skin excretes a lot of toxins through perspiration, which it cannot do if its pores are blocked.Keep your skin as porous as possible by washing it with water and soap at least once

a day and lightly brushing it with a cloth or soft brush. Rather than using oil-based

moisturisers and hand lotions, either use water-based ones, or try to discover and

eliminate the substances that dry out your skin. Many people find filtering chlorine

out of their shower and bath water helps achieve soft skin once again.

25DETOXIFICATION: MORE THAN JUST A BUZZWORD

Protect Your Kidneys

Your kidneys excrete a lot of toxins that your body has made water-soluble.To ensure they can do their job effectively, drink a lot of water, cut your salt intake,

keep your blood pressure under control, and, controversially, steer clear of high

protein diets. Filtering salt and protein is your kidneys' hardest work, and a diet

excessively high in proteins and salt overworks them unnecessarily.

Protect Your Liver

Your liver makes important contributions to toxin management. It produces bile acids that break down food (and especially fat) in the intestines so

that bowel waste can be excreted without taking useful foodstuffs with it. It stores

some essential vitamins and minerals. It directly tackles toxic chemicals like alcohol

and drugs that will do even more damage to the body without its intervention.

It is vital that you support this necessary detoxification organ by refraining from

drinking excessively, taking drugs, smoking, taking unnecessary synthetic medicine,

and eating huge amounts of fat that overload its ability to produce enough bile acid.

Support Your Lungs

You cannot exercise or sit in a sauna all day to increase your oxygen intake and boost your oxygen circulation, but your body needs oxygen all day.Smokers must abandon this unhealthy habit to save their lungs from a build-up of tar that inhibits their ability to

breathe deeply. A good technique to support your lungs is to exercise them frequently during the day. While sitting

at your desk, focus on your breathing for a minute. Inhale slowly and deeply for about four seconds, hold it for

four seconds, and then exhale slowly and deeply for four seconds. Repeat this several time throughout the day.

You can thereby train your lungs to breathe deeply even when you do not attend to it.

CONCLUSION

If you try to implement all these strategies at once, the massive change in your lifestyle might be too much for you to sustain. To succeed, gradually introduce them one by one until each becomes a habit that does not require any self-

discipline to maintain. Your body will reward you for it.

INTRODUCTION

Together with the general strategies set out in chapter 2, you can assist your body to neutralise toxins by consuming the minerals, alkaline foods, anti-oxidants, and other substances it employs to fight invading toxins. As there is no point consuming more artificial substances that future studies may find toxic, these are all completely natural.

NATURAL ANTI-TOXINS

Antioxidants

Antioxidants combat oxidative stress and its accompanying cell damage through a whole range of mechanisms. They either donate intact electrons to free radicals and thereby repair them, or they repair cells already damaged by free radicals, or they destroy free radicals before they can

steal electrons and thereby damage vital cells. As all these mechanisms are necessary to fight the potential damage of oxidation, you must consume a variety of antioxidants

to enable them all. Eating boxes of oranges without ever eating any other vegetables is a one-dimensional solution to a multi-dimensional problem and will not be effective.

Moreover, as we saw in chapter 1, all free radicals are not toxins, as some are used by the immune system to destroy potentially damaging cells like malignant tumours,

bacteria, and viruses. You should consequently consume enough antioxidants to repair bad free radicals, but not so many that it leaves your immune system without good

free radicals to damage harmful organisms.

As complicated as it sounds, you can easily achieve this balance by consuming only one antioxidant supplement, and by consuming a variety of fruit, vegetables,

and sea vegetables, most of which have antioxidant properties. The crux is to refrain from overloading yourself with multiple antioxidant supplements, and to consume

as many different antioxidant fruit and vegetables as possible to provide your body with the full range of antioxidant operations it requires to fight harmful oxidation.

Remember that too much of each type of antioxidant can be harmful, an excessively high intake of beta-carotene can cause lung cancer and vitamin E can cause prostate

cancer and stroke. That is why a balance is important.

DETOXIFICATION: MORE THAN JUST A BUZZWORD

U ric acid is a water soluble antioxidant that fights free radicals in cell and blood plasma. It has the highest concentration in the blood of all antioxidants. At

moderate concentrations it is a powerful healthy alkali, but becomes a harmful acid when mixed with carbonate ions, which are unfortunately plentiful in our

diets in the form of sugar and grains.

• 10mg of daily zinc is all the body needs to produce

sufficient uric acid. You will be consuming this

mineral if you eat the following foods; animal meat,

beans, nuts, and most seeds. As it is also found

in grains, the chance is good that you are already

consuming enough zinc. But staple cereals like corn

and rice can inhibit zinc absorption due to the high

levels of phytates present in these foods. Grains

with lower amounts have little to no effect on zinc

absorption. This is why eating presoaked and

even going so far as choosing sprouted grains, can

help improve zinc status in an individual as both

processes help to lower phytate levels.

• Glutathione is a peptide that the body produces

and stores inside cells. Toxins stick to glutathione,

which then carries them into faeces to be excreted.

With the help of other antioxidants, glutathione

also converts free radicals to antioxidants and

thereby recycles them. To help your body produce

it, eat sulphur and vitamins B6 and B12 in the form

of garlic, onion, dark green vegetables, and beans.

• Melatonin easily crosses cell membranes and

the blood–brain barrier, and can thus neutralise

many free radicals. You can consume it in cherries,

bananas, grapes, rice, and olive oil.

• Lipoic acid helps the body maintain high levels

of vitamins C and E. You can take it either as a

supplement or eat it in potatoes, spinach, broccoli,

liver, kidney, and yeast.

• Vitamin A, or retinol, prevents cell damage on

the skin, in the eyes, in the immune system, and

everywhere where mucus is secreted. You can find it

in dark coloured fruits and leafy vegetables.

• Lutein protects especially the cells in the retina and

macula from damage. The best dietary source is by

far almost every green leafy vegetable, with spinach

and kale as the superstars.

• Beta-Carotene is soluble in fats/lipids, which means

it strongly protects the brain and nervous system

from cell damage. The body converts it to vitamin

A. It is the red, orange, and yellow pigments found

in fruit and vegetables, so delight your family with

some brightly coloured dishes. Those pigments

also contain lycopene, which is another powerful

antioxidant.

• Vitamin C, also called ascorbic acid, is a strong

antioxidant that neutralises oxygen-rich substances

like hydrogen peroxide that cause too much

oxidation. Make sure you eat enough citrus fruits,

dark leafy greens, berries, peas, and tomatoes.

• Vitamin E is a collection of tocopherols and

tocotrienols, soluble in fats/lipids and protective

of cell membranes. You can obtain it by consuming

enough avocado, dark leafy greens, nuts (especially

almonds and hazelnuts), tofu, shellfish and

other fish, wheat germ, olive oil, Grape seed oil,

sunflower oil, squash & pumpkin.

• Selenium is a mineral that your body uses to

produce the enzymes that, in turn, produce many

of the most powerful antioxidants like vitamin C.

60mg per day is sufficient, and can be obtained

from brazil nuts, meat, fish, grains, and pulses.

• It should not be surprising to see that leafy greens,

nuts, seeds, colourful vegetables, pulses, and fruit

appear repeatedly as sources of so many of the

strongest antioxidants. It has long been known that

people who eat them are healthier and live longer.

Now we know why.

Ionised Alkaline Water

Alkaline water has both antioxidant and other detoxification properties.Alkaline water works as an antioxidant because it is particularly electron rich. It can thus donate electrons to free radicals with damaged electrons and thereby repair them.

Oxidation Reduction Potential (ORP), is the measure commonly used to quantify the power of one substance to reduce the oxidation of another. Powerful antioxidants have

low ORP scores, oxidants have high ORP scores. Cola has an ORP of approximately +600 and alkaline water of around -200.

It can also combat toxins that are not free radicals in several ways. Bacteria thrive in acidic environments, which is why the vast majority of the bacteria in our bodies live in

our stomachs and intestines. Acid in our blood forces our bodies to line our arteries with fat to prevent them from corroding. Acid in our cells prevent them from absorbing

the appropriate amount of oxygen and other nutrients.

By alkalising the body, alkaline water therefore inhibits the growth of bacteria, prevents unhealthy fat from being stored in the arteries, induces faster cell regeneration and

repair, and so on. Lastly, eight glasses of alkaline water per day will facilitate toxin excretion via perspiration and urine and will keep your bowel movements regular.

Chlorella

Chlorella is a green algae. It binds to metals, chemicals, and pesticides in your digestive tract and guides them to your rectum from where they are excreted. It thereby prevents these toxins from being absorbed into your bloodstream and stored somewhere in your body. It can also remove these toxins from your blood and from the

oxygen you breathe.

If you think your accidental intake of antimony, lead, cadmium, arsenic, mercury, aluminium, or any other metal or chemical is too high, a chlorella supplement like Clean

Chlorella or Toxin Therapy will almost certainly help. It has also proved effective to reduce nitrogen, nitrates, and ammonia levels in the body. It was originally tested in

mines and was found to be effective at removing metals from mine shafts after bulk mining operations.

Chlorella supplements should ideally contain cilantro, as this combination has been found to be more effective than either on its own. The cilantro kills some organic toxins,

like salmonella, and moves heavy metals out of cells, after which the Chlorella removes them from the body.

When you select a chlorella supplement, make sure that it was grown indoors under controlled conditions. The human body cannot break down the tough cell wall of

chlorella that is grown outdoors.

31DETOXIFICATION: MORE THAN JUST A BUZZWORD

Fulvic Acid Minerals

Fulvic acid minerals, as contained in products like Fulvic Restore, is a substance the body uses to restore and regenerate damaged and aged cells. It hence prevents cells from being killed too quickly by toxins and it revives cells that have already been damaged. It is a powerful electrolyte, which energises cells. It further

helps the body to achieve the appropriate chemical structure inside cells, due to its ability to both donate and receive electrons from cells as needed. It can easily pass

through cell membranes and transport nutrients to their desired locations. It dissolves minerals and carries them to where they are needed. It helps to form good metal ions

that bind to pollutants like pesticides and herbicides and neutralise them before they are excreted.

Iodine

Iodine displaces metals like mercury, lead, cadmium, and aluminium and halogens like bromine, chlorine, and fluorine and encourages their release out of the body. These are all toxins that need to be removed, especially when they occur in large concentrations. It also counteracts fungi, viruses, and bacteria that can harm the body. The

thyroid requires iodine to function, which is unfortunately in good supply from the environment as radioactive iodine. An iodine supplement makes iodine available to the

thyroid, and thereby prevents the radioactive iodine from the environment from binding to it.

If you eat a lot of sea vegetables, you may not need an iodine supplement. Otherwise, a supplement is appropriate. You should also remember that the halogens named above

tend to destroy iodine, and since they occur abundantly in our tap water, you may not consume as much iodine as you think.

32DETOXIFICATION: MORE THAN JUST A BUZZWORD

Wild Burdock Root

Wild Burdock Root removes metals and other impurities from the blood. It helps the liver to break down some of the toxins that come its way. It is also a powerful treatment for bacteria and fungi, and is even available as a topical ointment to treat

bacterial and fungal skin conditions.

You can buy the root at your local health store and juice it with other fruits and vegetables. Alternatively, you can take it in supplement form.

Selenium

Selenium, encountered earlier as an antioxidant, can be taken as a supplement to remove heavy metals. It is often included in other detox supplements, but can also be taken as a stand-alone supplement.

Coconut Oil

As a nut oil, coconut oil is a good antioxidant. In addition, it kills some fungi and bacteria and protects the body against radiation. Some people even apply it to the skin before spending time in the sun to protect

themselves from the sun’s ultraviolet radiation.

Zeolite

Zeolite, as contained in products like Zeolite Plus, is a natural combination of volcanic ash and sea water. They bind to heavy metals and remove them from the body. If volcanic ash does not sound appealing, resign yourself to the fact that you are already consuming substantial

amounts of ash through the air. Zeolite is a far superior option, since it is cleansed of impurities before used in supplements.

The negatively charged zeolite particles attract positively charged heavy metals, bind to them, and remove them from the bloodstream to be excreted. It also raises the body's

alkalinity and combats radiation poisoning, as researchers discovered after the 1986 escape of radioactive material at Chernobyl.

33DETOXIFICATION: MORE THAN JUST A BUZZWORD

Bentonite Clay

Currently not as popular as other substances on this list, bentonite clay a form of volcanic ash that is easily absorbed by the body and used to remove impurities. It carries a strong negative charge which binds to the positive charge in some toxins. It thereby absorbs many toxins before they can damage cells. It also has antibacterial

properties.

It can be consumed as a supplement or as a mud pack or ingredient in bath and other cosmetic products.

Gold

Many ancient cultures consumed trace amounts of gold for its spiritual and intellectual benefits. It is once again becoming popular in the 21st century in products like Colloidal Gold and Etherium Gold. Gold is a natural stimulator of cellular growth. It thereby repairs and/

or replaces cells that have been damaged by toxins. Some clinical trials, such as those conducted by Dr. Guy Abram, have found that, because of its cellular support function,

it can improve concentration, cognition, higher spiritual awareness, and joint health. It can also reduce stress, which is toxic.

Pau d’Arco

Scientists have found that the bark and leaves of the Pau d’Arco tree can kill some bacteria, fungi, viruses, and parasites. It has also proved an effective treatment for some types of infection and inflammation. In the natural health community it is either taken in capsule form or applied directly

to the skin to treat, for example, Candida. A product like N-Fuzed Candida combines it with black walnut hulls to maximise the anti-toxin effect.

Black Walnut

For centuries the hull of the black walnut tree has been used as a gentle laxative to relieve bloating, flatulence, and other digestive complaints like heartburn. It is also popular as a way to kill viruses, bacteria, and fungi. In this capacity, it has become a popular treatment for warts, herpes, cold sores, athlete’s foot, Candida, and

parasitic worm infections. The most active ingredients in black walnut hulls are called tannins, which are chemicals that reduce pain and swelling and drain body fluids like

mucus.

Chamaebatiaria Millefolium

Used in products like Chamae Rose, this shrub in the rose family is a great general detoxification agent. Through a mechanism that at least partly involves the transfer of the electromagnetic patterns from the soil to the route of the plant, it can purify the blood and liver of

potentially harmful substances. Its anti-toxic properties also beautify the skin through the removal of substances that block the pores and dim the skin's natural vibrant tone.

Digestive Supplements

As mentioned in the previous chapter, no detox program can be successful without regular bowel movement. There are many natural supplements that speed up the transit time of food waste through the intestines, which usefully reduces the toxic load on the liver.

Psyllium husk is a fibre that promotes regular bowel movement and removes sticky mucus and toxins from the intestines.

Flaxseed is a fibre that promotes regular bowel movement while healing and soothing the digestive tract with its lubricating oil. Psyllium husk, flaxseed, and bentonite clay

are all present in Pure Detox Purify.

Some herbs can help to maintain the health and tone of the intestines to induce more active constriction and relaxation of the intestinal walls. This movement removes

accumulated waste from the bowel walls. These herbs include fennel, red raspberry leaf, berberis, cayenne, cascara, ginger, turkey rhubarb, golden seal, and lobelia. They

can all be found in Pure Detox Cleanse.

CONCLUSION

In chapter 1 you learned where to find toxins in your environment and inside your body. This knowledge enables you to avoid at least some of them. Since you cannot step off our polluted planet to avoid all of them, chapter 2 showed you some general strategies to support your body's detoxification organs to improve their

ability to rid your body of the toxins that do manage to enter it. Even detoxification organs optimised for effective functioning can benefit from some extra help, however,

which is why chapter 3 recommended foods, drinks, and supplements that repair free radicals, prevent cell damage, repair cells, draw toxins out of cells, and direct them out

of the body.

You are now in a position to construct your own detoxification program and you are armed with the knowledge to evaluate the programs others try to sell you. Knowledge is

power. Use it well.

diabetes, arthritis, and many others. It focuses not only on healthy dieting, but also includes breathing exercises, massage techniques, and soft exercises like yoga and tai chi.

it contains both short-term and lifestyle tips.

Paul and Patricia Bragg, 1980. The Miracle of Fasting: Proven Throughout History for Physical, Mental and Spiritual Rejuvenation. The classic book

for beginner detox fasters, by the man who died in a surfing accident at age 96.

Dr. Joel Fuhrman and Neal Barnard, 1995. Fasting and Eating for Health: A Medical Doctor's Program for Conquering Disease. Another detox classic

that contains general detoxing tips as well as programs adapted for each detoxing organ and for various diseases from arthritis to common colds. Dr. Fuhrman's best-selling

"Eat to live" is also worth a read.

Joe Cross, 2014. The Reboot with Joe Juice Diet: Lose Weight, Get Healthy and Feel Amazing. From the maker of the award winning film "Fat, sick & nearly

dead" (which is also worth watching), comes this New York Times best seller that recommends juice and plant-based cleanses and exercise for a healthy body. Cross lost 50

kilograms and managed to take himself off all his numerous medications.

Dr. Paula Baillie-Hamilton, 2005. Toxic Overload This book covers in detail the way chemical in our food, homes and medicine cabinets can cause illness, and

practical ways to help overcome it all.

Dr Mark Sircus, 2014. Sodium Bicarbonate Sodium bicarbonate, also known as baking soda, has been used on a daily basis as part of a number of hospital

treatments, but most people remain unaware of its full therapeutic potential. In this book, Dr. Mark Sircus, shows how this common compound may be used in the alleviation

or, possibly, even prevention of many forms of illness.

Lynne Farrow, 2013. The Iodine Crisis The iodine crisis explains how we became so deficient, then shows the time tested solution to reversing many conditions.

Lynne Farrow reveals how she and thousands of other patient-activists changed their lives by researching and using iodine.

Dr Sherry Rogers, 2002. Detoxify or Die We are all a toxic cesspool of the lifetime accumulation of chemicals from our air, food, and water. U.S. EPA studies of

chemicals stored in the fat of humans show that 100% of people had dioxins, PCBs, dichlorobenzene, and xylene while another analysis of the exhaled breath of humans

showed carcinogenic benzene in 89% and perchloroethylene in 93%. And these chemicals are just the tip of the iceberg. For now we have the proof that it is the steady silent

accumulation over a lifetime that produces most diseases, including cancer. This book makes reference to over 700 scientific studies that demonstrate the danger these

chemicals pose to our health, and why (also explaining how) we should be actively aiding in their removal from our body today.

Professor Felicia Kliment, 20 . The Alkaline Acid Balance Diet Acidic wastes from processed food and chemical additives have detrimental effects on the human

body. When acidic wastes accumulate, they can cause organs to malfunction, causing degenerative disease. The Acid Alkaline Balance Diet has helped thousands of people

restore overall health by showing how to balance the body's acid-alkaline to detoxify toxins based on metabolic type.

Dr Batmanghelidj, 20 . Water and Salt Water and Salt - Your Healers from Within contains all Dr Batmanghelidj's fundamental research into curative powers

of water. It was written towards the end of his life and gives an overview of all his lifelong research.
