By: Lotts of Learning
Students highlight information from the mentor texts that they want to use in their essays. Students organize their ideas by filling out a graphic organizer.
Students use information from their graphic organizer to write a rough draft. Students write on “Rough draft paper” which leaves plenty of space for editing marks.
Students read over their rough drafts and look for ways to improve their essay. ARMS is a great acronym when it comes to revising.
Add more details or text evidenceRemove repetitive wording or irrelevant detailsMove words around for claritySubstitute boring words (get those thesauruses out!)
Students fill out a “Peer Editing” page with a partner to assess each others’ essays. Students focus on checking for content, rather than grammar errors. The teacher edits them for spelling and grammar errors, as well as content.
Students fix their errors as they write or type their final drafts. When their final drafts are finished, they can design a cover page.
