OBJECTIVES
Hello! This term you will learn how to be a paragraph superhero like me, you will learn how to write a proper paragraph. You will do this by using different methods and techniques. Do not forget to

We will learn the POWER writing process, which includes taking proper
notes and writing clear, structured paragraphs.

beginning.
Use a range of devices to support cohesion within paragraphs / sentences.
Use paragraphs, sequencing and linking them appropriately to support overall
development of the text.
Prepare a plan using observation notes and new ideas to produce a related topic.

WHAT IS PARAGRAPH WRITING?
Paragraph Writing
Topic sentence
051-eng-wb1-(WritingBooklet) 4
7. Can you think of example sentence starters for a concluding sentence, we have done
one for you.
C. Label the parts of a paragraph on the diagram
D. Topic sentence is the first sentence of the paragraph and tells us what the paragraph is
about, stating the main idea clearly.
1. Read the passages below and underline the topic sentence for each passage.
a) Joseph and Tom are good friends. They walk to school together every morning. After
school, the boys ride their bikes and play games together. Sometimes, Joseph and Tom
sleep at each other’s house.
b) My favourite holiday is Christmas. I like decorating my tree with lights. Santa Claus brings
us lovely presents. In the morning, we get to open our presents and play with our toys.
Then, our family eats a big dinner for Christmas. All in all, I love Christmas with my family.
2. Read the passages below and decide which sentence is the best topic sentence
for each passage. (one option is extra)
a) Cats are lazy animals.
b) Dessert is my favourite part of every meal.
c) A dinosaur lives under my bed.
_____ There are so many choices, like ice cream, cake, pies and cookies. I think brownies
are my favourite. I wish I could eat only desserts and never spinach!
_____ They like to lie around all day. They walk slowly, and sometimes they lick their paws
and fur. That is why some of them can be overweight.
WHAT IS PARAGRAPH WRITING?
To sum up,
051-eng-wb1-(WritingBooklet) 5
3. Write a suitable topic sentence for the following passages.
a) _____________________________________________________________________
Firstly, teams from many different countries compete in the World Cup. Secondly, I love seeing
the fans from all the different countries. This gives it a very special atmosphere. To sum up, the
World Cup is a very special event for me.
b) _____________________________________________________________________
In Turkey, it is possible to ski in the winter and go to beautiful hot beaches in the summer. There
are historical towns and famous monuments. You can try many different types of delicious food.
Overall, Turkey has many options for an exciting and varied holiday.
E. Supporting details explain the idea in the topic sentence. We usually have at least two or
more supporting detail sentences. Supporting details should be about the topic and give
interesting, important details.
1. What should the supporting details be about?
_____________________________________________________________________
_____________________________________________________________________
2. Read the topic sentence and write three supporting details.
I had a great time at my birthday party.
_____________________________________________________________________
_____________________________________________________________________
_____________________________________________________________________
_____________________________________________________________________
_____________________________________________________________________
3. Read the passages below and underline the supporting details that are not about
the topic sentence.
a) Books are a good way to learn new things about the world. You can read stories
which allow you to imagine different times and places. In addition, the facts in
books are often more correct than the information on the internet. Books are a
little heavy to carry around. Generally, I think you can learn a lot from reading
books.
b) Playing computer games is an unhealthy hobby. You have to sit inside all day
instead of going outside to do things that are more active and get some exercise.
Some people say that you can hurt your eyes if you play them for too long. In
addition, they are a lot more expensive than books. Many other hobbies are a lot
better for you than playing computer games.
WHAT IS PARAGRAPH WRITING?

F. Your paragraph must have a structure; you can do this by using a sequence of transition
words to help order your sentences in your paragraph. Watch the video and note down
as many transition words as you can.
G. Concluding sentence gives a summary of the main idea, it closes the paragraph.
1. What is the relationship between the topic sentence and the concluding sentence?
__________________________________________________________________
__________________________________________________________________
2. Can you remember any examples of transition words and phrases used for the
concluding sentence?
3. Read the passages below and write a suitable concluding sentence.
My nephews Jason and Levi are the best thing in my life. We always have so much fun playing
games together. They come to visit me at my house at least once a month. We like to play football
or basketball and I normally let them win to make them happy.
a) ____________________________________________________________________
____________________________________________________________________
Having a computer in your bedroom can really help with your homework. First, it is possible to use it
whenever you want without other people from your family stopping you. In addition, you can
research everything you need to know. You could even use it to make all your work look good and
then you could e-mail it directly to your teacher.
b) ____________________________________________________________________

C. Read the paragraph below and identify each PEEL part of the paragraph with different colors.
Underline the POINT sentence with blue;
EVIDENCE/EXAMPLE sentences with red;
EXPLANATION sentences with green;
and the LINK sentence with orange.
Remember: there may be more than one evidence/example/explanation sentence.
Zoos Should Close
I believe that zoos should close. It’s not fair to the animals, being locked up in cages all day so
people can stare at them. Dolphins swim hundreds of miles a day, and they live in aquariums the size
of our classroom. Dolphins are also very smart and love their mothers. In the wild, they live with their
mothers for many years, but in zoos, they are often not in the same aquarium. I read a book about
chimps, and one chimp who lived in a zoo went crazy, probably because his cage was too small. All he
did was chew on old cigarette butts. Another chimp named Mimi knows over 300 words in sign
language. She’s as smart as a 2-year-old. If chimps are in zoos, why aren’t toddlers?
D. Choose a topic from the box below, plan what you are going to write and then write a PEEL paragraph.

The way a frog starts life is strnge. The frog’s eggs hatch into little tadpole that can swim.
And the tadpoles then grow other body perts like legs or a tail. The tail then disappears
also the tadpole begins to look like a frog. Overall, I think that this change is a re-ally
unusual thing about frogs.

plants spread their seed, helping forests that have been cleared or damaged to regrow. Unfortunately, the
bats of North America are in danger. A deadly disease called white-nose disease has killed some seven
million of them since 2006, and it continues to spread today. (National Geographic Kids – see references)
