Write It Do It• Test a team’s ability to communicate with each other using

technical writing• Writer – describes in writing how to build the given model

• Builder – Builds the model from parts using the writer’s instructions

• This is a constant event for Science Olympiad

• Promotes observation, description and re-construction skills• Critical thinking

• Problem solving

• Written communication

• Building from instructions

• Promotes estimation skills and specificity

• Absolutely MUST-HAVE skills for science • Observation and recording data

• Ability to analyze methodically and be systematic

• Ability to describe something in detail with estimation and specifics

• Ability to reconstruct based on instructions

Fold to make a ∑ ✓ Fold such that the paper looks like a

sigma symbol Write the symbol “∑” in the top right

Scoring• Winner – Built model nearest to the original model

• Rubric is written for the model based on• Use of part (size, color)• Location of part• Orientation in reference to another part on the model• Connection to other parts/model

• Pieces connected correctly beyond an incorrect connection will be counted

• No Penalty for unused parts

• Tie-Breaker – Shortest time of construction

• Pictures taken of team’s model and actual built model is used to score

• Written instructions are quickly gone through to make sure drawings and inappropriate usage of symbols are not present

Assembling the team

• Both students should have decent spatial sense

• Students must get along and be able to communicate – Most Important!

• Writer• Must be VERY observant and detail oriented with clear handwriting

• Must be able to make estimations

• Must be able to think like the builder

• Builder• Must be VERY good with following instructions & assembling things

• Must be able to understand the writer’s style of communication

• Must be able to think like the writer

Writing Concepts - The Basics• Materials list – Some teams prefer this and some don’t – find what

works• Be specific (size, type, color, texture)

• Begin with an overall description of the object “looks like a four sided tower”

• Imagine the sequence of steps you (the writer) will have to take to build the model • Usually build from the ground up in layers: base, middle and top (BMT)

• Orientation scheme – Left-to-Right Top-to-Bottom (LRTB) or NSEW (works well)• Use clock reference for round objects (put paper clip at 12 o’clock on the CD

face)• Use “Northern hemisphere” or “Southern hemisphere” for spherical objects• Visualize written instruction to make sure there is only one way to interpret it

and only one possible way to construct it

• Use the entire 25 minutes – There’s no penalty or differentiation for finishing early

8

Writing Concepts - Advanced

• Usually placement of objects is very specific in reference to each other• There will ALWAYS be ways to orient and locate objects – Otherwise

supervisors will not be objectively judge the built models

• Number your steps

• Describe unusual parts, make specific mention of unusual aspects that will come of use• For example: Take the clip like part, notice that there are 3 indentations

on handles

9

Page 10: Write-it Do-it › images › mssodocs › 2018 › WIDI2018.p… · Head Coach –L’Anse Creuse High School 1. Write It Do It •Test a team’s ability ... •Usually build from

Writing Concepts – Advanced Contd. • For complicated structures, sections should be described to be

built separately

• Provide specific instructions on how to assemble each section

• Remember connection orientation – pieces must be connected properly

• Note the colors and size – Builders will often be given similar material but of different colors and/or size

• Use a consistent orientation scheme to describe the positions of the objects’ parts in relation to each other • E.g., compass directions or the face of a clock• Make sure the reference points for the orientation scheme remain

consistent.• Use personal references for distance (1 cm=width of fingernail)• Keep your writing neat and legible!

• Do not put a smiley face or a sad face or any drawing

10

Write It/ Do It- Builder Tips• Bring a writing instrument

• However, pay attention if the supervisor has provided a writing instrument

• Briefly read through the entire description first

• If a materials list was provided by the writer then compare each of the materials on the list with those that are present at the station• There may be extra pieces or pieces of different sizes and colors – Look

for clues to the size and color• Pay attention to the asymmetrical objects and their orientation

• Empty the bag and separate components into groups

• Look for small parts – paper clips, toothpicks, strings etc.

• Ask event supervisor if s/he will provide additional material in case you damage the one provided in the bag• At Regional usually they will, at State they may not

• Usually there should be an anchor piece around which the whole model is built• Find that anchor piece and build everything in reference of that

• Assemble as many pieces as possible (skip steps if time is short)

• If running out of time, add/attach ALL pieces – there are no negative points for using extra pieces

• Keep the object/model in the same orientation during construction

• Usually no part of the model should be left loose• If the part falls off during transportation to the judging room, you will be at

disadvantage

• Pace yourself…..20 minutes goes quickly

• Markings• Note specific color, starting point, end point, orientation

• Folds• Folds will have specific alignment with reference to other objects and

lines/edges

Coaching Tips

• PRACTICE, PRACTICE, PRACTICE

• Debriefing – Integral part of practice• Compare original and one produced

• Discuss written instructions together

• Thought process while writing/building

• Let kids build a model AND create the corresponding rubric

• Take a picture and keep instructions

• Switch roles and use several tryouts to identify the best student to play specific role

• Have writer sit with the builder as they build and take notes when they struggle

• Have builder make notes on the writing when something is not clear or not mentioned

15

Page 16: Write-it Do-it › images › mssodocs › 2018 › WIDI2018.p… · Head Coach –L’Anse Creuse High School 1. Write It Do It •Test a team’s ability ... •Usually build from

Practice, practice, practice!• Have your student teams practice together with a variety of

objects.• Building sets such as Legos, K’nex, Tinker Toys, etc.• Cheap materials such as popsicle sticks, straws, string, etc. Styrofoam

cups, plates or bowls are great building surfaces.

• Determine which student is a better writer or builder, and have them practice those skills.• Effective writers tend to be attentive to details, and have a good sense

of the visual space.• Effective builders are usually methodical in their work and good at

following instructions.

• Ensure that descriptive and directional conventions are understood between the partners, without establishing a code.

• Have students practice with objects that are as unique and challenging as possible.

EVENT SUPERVISORS:When creating models for invitationals

-Make sure there is a designated “front” for scoring purposes.-Make sure model is stable and sturdy-Bring extra parts in case of breakage-Take photos or builds with team #s

A well-run event will have a well-built model which will have a very detailed rubric and a relatively clean and specific model

-Significantly reduces ambiguity in judging-Allows the supervisor to objectively and consistently review the built model to provide points

More points/connections, the better! -Division B models will have around 60+ points-Division C models will have around 80+ points-AVOID TIES!!

Games to Help Build Skills

• Describe-it Build-it• Build a simple model

• Have them sit back to back

• Give the model to the Describer

• Give a bag of the same items to the Builder

• Allow 5 minutes for the Describer to give instructions to the Builder

• Do not allow the Builder to ask questions

• Give points to the team that is able to make the closest replica of the prototype
