James 4:10 ESV

Have you ever found yourself overcome with reverence and gratitude? I recently encountered one such instance in the middle of the St. Louis Aquarium. It was a normal day. People were swirling around me. My to do list grew larger by the minute. The fish were pretty, but I had bigger fish to fry. But then, I came face to face with an obscure diminutive sea dragon fish. It was so unusual and exquisite. It took my breath away. I felt like Job as God questioned him; “Have you journeyed to the springs of the sea or walked in the recesses of the deep?” (Job 38:16 NIV) In that moment I was humbled. God revealed his glory in a tiny insignificant fish that I will never see again.

C.S. Lewis says it this way, “Humility is not thinking less of yourself, it’s thinking of yourself less.” When I take my eyes off myself and my woes, then my life is filled with God’s good gifts, gratitude, peace, joy, and so much more. I am so thankful for God’s creative pursuing of my soul. My prayer for the coming weeks is that we can all be humbled by God’s love.

“The reward for humility and fear of the Lord is riches and honor and life.”

Celebrate Recovery

Thursday evenings at 6pm, in Burlington, are special times at Harmony Bible Church.   Why?  Because that is when we gather for Celebrate Recovery.

You might be wondering, “What is Celebrate Recovery?”  Let me tell you… Celebrate Recovery is a Christ-centered, 12-step program, designed to help us find the freedom to overcome our hurts, habits and hang-ups, by identifying our struggles, confessing them, and turning them over to Jesus Christ.

You might be thinking to yourself, “Oh, that’s not for me… that’s for people who struggle with drugs and alcohol."  While it’s true that we can celebrate freedom from chemical dependency, the majority of people coming to Celebrate Recovery, are those of us who simply struggle with anxiety, depression, dealing with flashbacks from abusive relationships, or simply the hurt of dealing with the loss of a loved one, just to mention a few.

James 5:16 tells us that we are to confess our sins to one another and pray for one another, so that we may be healed.   James is not telling us that we can forgive each other‘s sins.  We know that only God can do that.  But what he is saying, is that there’s something very healing, about being able to get something off your chest, and to be able to have someone there to pray for you and walk through that hard thing, with you.

Are you struggling?  Is there a hurt that you just can’t let go of?  Then perhaps it’s time to come check us out at Celebrate Recovery. A place where you can feel free to takeoff your mask and simply be real, just like the rest of us there.
