4THE CONCEPT

World of Warcraft Mobile Armory is a free service that allows players with active game time to use the Remote Auction House and Remote Guild Chat on a supported mobile device.

The Remote Auction house lets you browse the Auction House, check the status of existing auctions, purchase items, and create your own auctions.

Remote guild chat lets you talk with your guild mates while in app, allows you to see who is online, view their character information, and send them whispers.

“The guild chat logs you out if you switch to another page, app, or if your phone locks, which makes all the guild chat disappear. I can’t read what was said when I wasn’t in that particular section of the app.”

“There is no in-game support for dungeons or raids and the search/browsing makes it difficult to find anything. I also wish there was a way to read all in-game mail, not just auction house mail.”

“From a UI perspective, the app is very clumsy, outdated, and hard to navigate. It is like they just threw a bunch of buttons in and hoped for the best. Since it is so hard to use, I only end up using auction house and guild chat.”

7USER GOALSBelow are the three main goals I focused on when defining and redesign the WoW Mobile Armory. They are drawn from over ten user interviews of people who play the game and have used the app. I noticed certain trends and pain points that came through in almost every interview, and

those became my user goals.

Goal: Have access to command table for garrison.

Solution: The redesign allows users to view their command table, enabling them to send followers on m iss ions , ge t rewards f rom completed missions, see how long in progress missions have, and view a list of their followers.

Goal: Make guild chat more easily usable.

Solution: Guild chat is more easily accessible and reorganized. With a background refresh, users are able to switch out of the app and, when they return, can see what has been said while they were gone. Whispers are also located in a more convenient section below the main guild chat.

Goal: Declutter the UI in order to be able to easily use the whole app.

Solution: The redesign takes away all t h e b u t t o n s a n d c o n d e n s e s information. The bottom navigation highlights the most important and used sections of the app, which letting users explore the rest of the information more intuitively.

Frustrations/Pain points1. Guild chat does not allow for background refresh2. Current app does not support in-game mail3. No easily accessible end-game information

Recently MonicaMonica has been very busy as she is a working single mother. She has been unable to log on to World of Warcraft and communicate with her guildmates as much as she would like. She also hasn’t been able to check on her auctions.

MonicaMonica downloaded the World of Warcraft Armory app in order to fix these issues. However, she found some bugs within the app for the specific tasks she wanted to achieve, making it more annoying to use the app than to take the time to log on.

Goals:1. Wants a simple way to connect with guildmates2. Needs to check his and other people’s statuses3. Needs to be able to navigate quickly4. Wants to have access to command table

Frustrations/Pain points:1. The UI is cluttered, which doesn’t allow him to navigate efficiently2. The guild chat is not effective3. No integration of command table or garrison

Throgbold is a very competitive, yet fun, player. He started a guild about 2 years ago and loves always being able to have access to the game, not only to talk to other guild members and check auctions, but to also check up on how his armor stacks up against others.

Throgbold downloaded the World of Warcraft Armory app in order to have a way to communicate while offline and check up on his guild and friends. He has, however, been having a hard time navigating through the app and using it for what he needs.

After card sorting and site map sketching, I began to sketch some wires. This allowed me to better understand how my app was going to evolve and let me explore many different ideas. It also helped me make sure I was prioritizing user goals.

Card SortingI started with card sorting to better understand the navigation and the necessary features for the MVP. This allowed me to group different concepts in order to understand what made sense together and what was unnecessary.

After card sorting, I drew up some site map sketches to begin to put together my navigation. This helped me cut down even more and understand the direction and purpose of the app.
