Welcome to the most recent edition of our school magazine, Crestmag. Each time I write this introduction I often struggle to pick a place to begin, this is thanks to the incredible exploits our students get up to each term. I often beam about their performances, achievements, dedication, commitment and service to our school, however, this time I can write to you to tell you I am not alone in my opinion of our school.

As I am sure most of you are aware during the spring term we had a visit from Her Majesties Inspectors for an OFSTED Inspection and as I am sure most of you are aware we received the judgement of ‘A Good School with Outstanding Features’. I say this with immense pride and make no apologies for sharing this information on a regular basis with anyone that will care to listen! The reason being is I see, every day, how hard the staff here work to deliver a world class learning environment for our students, I also see how hard our wonderful students work to make the most of this environment to prepare themselves for life out in the big wide world. The amount of positive comments from parents and members of our community over this past term have been overwhelming. The feedback we received from the OFSTED ‘Parent View’ questionnaire’s were extremely encouraging and the behaviour of our students and the way they carry themselves around our school confirms what I have known all along; Crestwood School is a great place to be.

We are far from the end of our journey. We believe, over time we can prove to be a truly outstanding school and we will continue to work towards this target by doing things our way, the Crestwood way!

I hope you enjoy the Crestmag, normally I would pick out some highlights but after such an incredible term that would be impossible, see for yourself!

Kind Regards,

Parent Pay

Parent PayFollowing the successful introduction of ParentPay into school last year, we would like to thank all Parents/Carers who have supported us in activating their accounts.

We understand that not everyone has the availability to pay online but anyone wishing to pay cash can contact school and we will issue you with a Barcode to pay at a local Pay Point. Please be aware that a payment made via this method takes 24 hours to appear on the school system.

Cash payments are no longer accepted in school for any trip. It is much safer for our students to not have to carry large amounts of money and due to the increase in student numbers it reduces administration and cash handling within school.

If any Parents/Carers have not received their Activation Letter or need help to reset their password please do not hesitate to contact the Finance Office at school on 01384 686850 or email [email protected] and we will be happy to help you.

World Book Day

World Book DayYear 7 and staff dressed up as book characters, to welcome our special guest: Birmingham’s Poet Laureate, Matt Windle. ‘The Poet with Punch’ performed his poetry to Years 7 and 8 and guests, Year 5 from Bromley Hills Primary School. Matt entertained the audience, especially making up a rap with pupils’ names and tales of his other life as a professional boxer. Matt ran exciting boxercise and poetry work-shops, combining exercise with creativity and brought his 2012 Olympic Torch to show pupils in the ‘Meet and Greet’ at lunch-time.

We also organised a poetry competition for Years 7 and 8, which was judged by Matt. In the corner were over fifty entries but the overall winner was Madison Mason in 7DH. Matt was very impressed with the mature subject matter on many of the entries, covering topics such as sexism, rejection, depression and bereavement. Other worthy winners were: Sophia Pritchard, Imran Ali, Katie Fisher and Eleanor Parsons. Successful poems are displayed by B Block stairs! The Extreme Reading Photograph Competition winners were Caitly Osborne in 7AW and Miss Evans!

Even the snow couldn’t put up a strong enough fight to stop Crestwood celebrating World Book Day on a freezing March day!

Here is the winning Poem, well done Madison!

Girls wear pink

Boys wear blue

Men like Boxing

Women like shoes

But what if this world

Wanted to change?

To break these rules

And this pain

A boy would wear pink

A girl would wear blue

Women would try boxing

And men would like shoes

But in today’s world

People can be free

To do what they want

And who they want to be

By Madison Mason 7DH

1st PrizeThe book character costumes were amazing! This year, we had the highest number of Year 7 pupils coming to school dressed up, despite the weather. Our winner was Leo Garrett, 7AW as the BFG with 7EM being the best dressed tutor group. Pupils voted Mr Fisher, the staff champion as the wolf in ‘3 Little Pigs’ alongside Miss Canadine, Miss White and Miss Morris as the pigs. The Maths Department won as ‘Best Department’ dressing up as 101 Dalmatians led by Mrs Hart sporting a wig as Cruella de Vil! The English Department came as ‘Of Mice and Men’ characters and the Teaching Assistants as characters from ‘Holes.’ Mrs Lander looked fabulous as a walking grave-stone dressed as the Grave-Robbers Apprentice and Miss Dredge, was a great sport coming dressed as Dorothy from the Wizard of Oz!

Matt and the pupils had a wonderful day together. James Groucutt in 8WG said the work-shop and presentation were “incredible” which sums up this knock-out celebration!

We Will Rock You

The performance took place on 21st, 22nd & 23rd March and tickets sold out very quickly across all three nights!

The school’s Performing Arts Director (Mr Sweeney), Head of Drama (Miss Bradshaw) and Choreographer (Miss Canadine) directed the show with over 80 students participating every evening.

A very proud member of the audience each night was Headteacher, Mr Bowles, who said: ‘I have always been passionate about Performing Arts. One of my goals when arriving here was to create an environment that enabled our students to express themselves and explore the opportunities that acting, dancing, singing and performing could offer. It is safe to say that what Mr Sweeney, Miss Canadine and Miss Bradshaw have created, obviously with the help of our amazing students, has by far surpassed my expectations. The comments we received each night from the community verified that. During this past week we have seen some incredible performances by our students, they are a credit to our school, their families and our community.’

Performing Arts students wowed sold out audiences this term with their version of Ben Elton’s ‘We Will Rock You – School Edition.’

BournvilleAs part of their GCSE history local project, year 10 recently visited Bournville, including the world renowned Cadbury World. This term students have been learning about Bournville, key figures in its development and how it has changed over time. Students had a fantastic day including a talk from the Cadbury education officer tailored to their exam board, a Cadbury World visit and a walking tour of Bournville. Students recount their day:

’For me Bournville was a such an amazing experience. Cadbury World in my opinion is one of the greatest places on earth and to be able to gain the valuable information for my GCSE and to eat chocolate at the same time was just brilliant and something I would almost definitely recommend and do again. Whenever people visit Cadbury world they normally visit just for the chocolate and don’t normally take much notice of the gigantic back story about the creation of Bournville itself and the history that surrounds it. As well as visiting Cadbury world we also visited the town of Bournville itself; built as a town full of houses and amenities for the workers who worked at the Cadbury factory it is still as pleasant now as it was 100 plus years ago and is a valuable source of information and a perfect example of the theory that happy workers make better workers. A truly amazingly inspiring trip which I would go on again in a heartbeat!‘’ - Daniel Moriarty 10HH

“My Bournville experience is definitely a great time in my Crestwood life which I would love to experience again. Miss Read organised a very well thought out day- firstly we had a talk telling us about the history of Bournville. Usually an educational speech tends to be quite boring, however, it turned out to be one of the best parts of the day as we became a part of the talk and we learnt a lot of valuable and interesting information from the spokesman. We watched videos which gave us a clear insight to what life was like during the successful creation of Bournville.

After the all-important talk we were toured around the Cadbury factory which was of course, excellent. After we had explored the factory we went for a walk around Bournville to appreciate the village and to see how much it has changed over time” - Jessica Skidmore 10AH

Everyone who chose GCSE History as an option was invited on an educational trip to Bournville, Birmingham. We had an excellent presentation on the history of Bournville, including how the Cadbury brothers’ Quaker beliefs affected the development of the village. If you ever visit Bournville you will notice that there will be no pubs, Bookies or even fast food shops!

Bournville held many treasures including its Church. Its centrepiece located in the middle of the main park and lakes which covered the areas. Bournville even has an old Lloyd’s bank which has now been modernised into a dentist. Lloyd’s bank was in fact great friends with the Cadbury Brothers and was in charge of stockpiling their money!” – Cole Roberts 10MW

“Bournville was a great experience that has really helped grasp a stronger understanding of how the site functions and sustains a factory in a garden. Providing me with a viable source for my history GCSE. I really enjoyed seeing the history of the village and how it’s changed over time to the tourist attraction it is today. I feel as though a have learnt a lot from being able to see the site in person, for what I might of in the classroom. The talk that one of the staff gave us helped us as he gave us many missing gaps and felt strongly about the Quaker beliefs and Bournville. If I didn’t have this opportunity I don’t think I would have this great of an understanding.” – Lee Gorst 10MW

Dudley Youth Awards

The Dudley Youth Awards is a fantastic event which recognises the potential and incredible achievements of young people aged 11 to 19 (or up to 25 for those with a disability) from around our borough and the valuable contribution young people make. The awards evening is organised by Dudley Youth Council, with the support of Dudley Youth Service. The awards look to celebrate the valuable contribution young people make to their communities.

On the evening of the 16th March, Miss Read, Mrs Carpenter & Mr Rollason attended the awards to celebrate the fantastic achievement of 2 Crestwood students. Saman Batool 9KR and Dan Moriarty 10HH, were nominated for the Contribution to School and Further Education Award - an award for young people who go that extra mile in their own learning or helping others within the school or further education environment. More than 200 people turned out to the Furnace Theatre, part of Glasshouse College, Stourbridge to the awards ceremony which honoured the achievements of special young people in the borough. Out of numerous students, Saman and Dan were shortlisted for this award and both made it through to the final four. These are two very special students who are role models to their Crestwood peers - congratulations on your incredible nominations.

Megan’S STORYMegan has been volunteering at Wordsley Community Centre recently as part of her bronze DofE award. On Friday, the local MP and newspaper will be going to the Centre as they want to give Megan a gift to say thank you and feature her, Crestwood and DofE in the local press.

What a positive achievement. This is what DofE is all about - helping the community! Massive pat on the back to Megan. Here is the story that appeared in the Dudley News:

A DEDICATED Wordsley school girl has been praised and rewarded by her MP after decorating the toilets of Richardson Hall.

Megan Kings, of Crestwood School, spent several weekends painting and decorating the ladies toilets of the community centre as part of her Bronze Duke of Edinburgh Award.

The 14-year-old was presented with the award on behalf of Wordsley Community Centre after saving them hundreds of pounds.

She was presented with a tablet device by Dudley South MP Mike Wood at his Older People’s Information Fair on 16th March.

Mr Wood said: “This is a fantastic achievement. It is truly inspiring to see a young person go the extra mile to help their local community.

“We all wish Megan the very best of luck as she progresses with her Duke of Edinburgh Award.”

Mr Bowles, who joined the Crestwood School in 2010, said: “It’s been a fantastic journey for the school, we were elated to be rated good back in 2014, so to repeat that is a truly great feeling and something everyone connected to the school takes immense pleasure in. We are proud of our students and proud to serve our community. To have our work on student personal development, behaviour and welfare identified as ‘outstanding’ is really the icing on the cake”.

Chair of Governors, Bob Dimmock added: ‘This is a tremendous achievement and is one that the school community truly deserves. I am thrilled that the Inspector recognised the tireless hard work, commitment, dedication and diligent professionalism that occur every day across our school’.

Invictus Golf TripOn the 31st January and 7th February 2018 eleven Invictus students had the opportunity to experience professional golf coaching at the prestigious Enville Golf Club. The club and its members welcomed our students warmly.

Over the two sessions, our Invictus students managed to improve their golf swing and even got the chance to use a variety of clubs. It was clear that the students showed a real desire to improve and were committed in their approach.

The students even got chance to use video technology where the golf pro recorded their golf swings. We are immensely grateful that Enville Golf Club managed to provide this opportunity for our students.

Miss Hatton Director of Invictus sport commented, “I have been overwhelmed by the talent we have amongst our students and will be happy to support these students further”.

Sinead has worked independently this year to create a ceramic teapot based on the work of artist Beatriz Milhazes. She has demonstrated outstanding effort and aptitude in ceramic techniques, gaining new skills and applying them in her own creative way.

Her sketchbook is a strength and portrays a visual journey from an initial idea to a final outcome. Alongside her peers, Sinead quietly accomplishes her aims with success and is a pleasure to have in the lessons.

Artist in Focus Samra Kauser 11PC and Sinead Leckey 9EL are this terms ‘Artist in Focus’. All students have worked extremely hard and made excellent progress over the Spring term.

Samra is a very talented Year 11 artist and has developed a very high standard of skill particularly when using oil paints. Samra enjoys working in 2D materials and her dedication to Art and Design during the last two years has ensured she is now a very accomplished artist. Samra hopes to complete A- levels and then go on to do a degree in science based subjects. Art and Design has given Samra fantastic observational skills and an understanding of how to see fine details. She is able to work through problems and find solutions whilst working to deadlines. These are life skills that have been developed through Art and Design and will help Samra to go on to be very successful after finishing her GCSE’s. Samra is an outstanding artist and we hope she will continue to paint for pleasure in the future. Samra is a well-deserved Artist in Focus!

6TH FORM ON TOUR Rebecca Dowen, our Year 13 student, spent her half term week in Berlin, all on her own attending full time language classes. She stayed with a total stranger (an elderly lady who spoke no English), caught a plane all on her own and made her way to the school every morning using public transport on her own. She was totally immersed into the language and culture as nobody there spoke any English to her during that time.

For any teenager you can imagine what a big step this is but she did really well and wanted to stay longer. Her German has come on leaps and bounds (she now has an English/Black Country accent mixed in with a Berlin dialect which sounds really cute!) which will hopefully help her with her exams but it has made a massive difference to her confidence and self-belief. Mrs Allardice and I are really proud of her and so is her mum who I had the pleasure of speaking to earlier in the week. Below you can read Rebecca’s own account of her trip.

Well done Rebecca!

Mrs Oestreich

I decided to go to Germany because I thought it would be a great opportunity to make my speaking skills in German a lot better and I also thought it would be great memories and something I will remember forever but also as I struggle with my confidence I thought maybe it would improve that a bit as well.

I decided to go to Berlin in Germany and I signed up for an A-Level revision course at a school called Deutsch-Institut and I also decided to stay with a host family for a week. I went in the February half term, on the day I went I was nervous but also excited. When I got to Germany I was welcomed by Angelika who I would be staying with for the week, she was very lovely and welcoming, and she made me pizza! The next day was probably the only day that I was really nervous as I had to use the public transport and I thought that I was going to get lost, but Angelika helped and took me to the bus that took me straight to the school. When I got to the school everyone was very welcoming and throughout the week it really helped with my speaking in German as it was an international school and most people I met didn’t speak English, so the only common language was German. I was put into a class with people who where at the same level as me and they were also wonderful too. At the end of the week a girl from Taiwan gave me a gift which was a gold coloured bookmark and I made other friends as well.

Throughout the week I saw beautiful sights like the Fernsehturm, the Brandenburg tor, Alexander Platz etc but on the way from the airport and to the airport I saw the other sights that I didn’t manage to see through the week. I was sad when the week was over because I enjoyed it so much. I wish I had the chance to stay longer but I was really glad to see my family. I would really recommend learning German as it opens your knowledge to another culture and I find it really interesting learning another language and learning about another culture. I would also like to thank Miss Oestreich for recommending the trip, for helping to organise it and giving me extra help with things like transport and also Mrs Allardice for helping me with what to say in certain situations in German and also for her support as well.

CRESTWOOD BOYS AT

BLACK COUNTRY ATHLETICS

2018 Primary School Dance Festival

Crestwood boys from Year 9 qualified for the prestigious Black Country Indoor Games. The boys fought off competition from local schools to earn the right to compete amongst 13 schools from across the county. Competition was based around track and field events that included speed, endurance, power and strengths tests, results where correlated to give an overall ranking. Crestwood boys finished 6th out of the entire Black Country group of schools, a fantastic achievement and well done to all involved who represented Crestwood in such a fantastic way.

Invictus Festival Performing Arts

27th March – Wolverhampton Grand Theatre

Crestwood, along with the other Invictus schools, had the privilege of performing at the Wolverhampton Grand Theatre in the Invictus Festival of Performing Arts on the 27th March. Each school showcased a selection of highlights from their school productions, and Crestwood were fortunate enough to be able to close the show, receiving a standing ovation from the judges, other schools and the general public with their rendition of ‘Bohemian Rhapsody’. As always, Crestwood’s exceptionally talented students did the school proud! Miss Canadine was part of the creative team conducting putting the whole evening together, while Mr Sweeney was in the orchestra.

Finally Crestwood are ecstatic to announce we won the awards for best cohesive performance and communal involvement. We were the only school to win 2 different overall category awards.

Internet Safety – A Guide for Parents The results from Dudley’s most recent ‘cybersurvey’ indicate that not all children and young people are taught to stay safe online by their parents or carers.

The research shows that parents are most likely to give online safety advice to eleven year olds, but after this age, their input falls away until fewer than half of fifteen year olds receive parental input, even though they are at the highest risk of experiencing online problems. The results also show that parents and carers deliver more online safety advice to daughters and considerably less to sons.

Being able to turn to a parent or carer when things go wrong is vital for keeping children and young people safe. And with this in mind we have pulled together the below advice from children and young people in Dudley to help you get started in talking to your children about staying safe online.

Advice to parents and carers from children and young people in Dudley:

• Show an interest – ask them what apps, games and websites they use and learn about the safety features on them (these are usually in the settings tab )

• Help them feel comfortable talking to you – make sure they know they can talk to you about anything – if you don’t know the answer you can research it online together

• Tell them to show you any messages they don’t like

• Tell them where else they can go if they don’t feel comfortable talking to you about stuff (another relative /school nurse / childline etc)

• Respect your children’s privacy – do not ‘snoop’ in their phone / websites

• If something bad happens to your child online, support them – don’t punish them by taking away their mobile / internet access – it’s not their fault

• Watch out for any changes in your child if you see any, share your concerns with the school to see if they have noticed anything

• ‘Clean’ your child’s friend lists with them to make sure they really know all of their friends and who they are talking to

• Tell them to keep passwords and personal details safe

• Get a good firewall and use parental blocks where appropriate (depending on their age and maturity)

• Don’t feel like you have to know everything and don’t feel silly if you don’t – look it up or ask somebody – your child will probably be able to tell you!

• Go to information sessions at school to learn the most up to date information

Current league table and achievements

The new Houses FIRE, EARTH, AIR and ICE were brought in September to really provide a competitive edge to students and their school life. The Houses provide an ethos of achievement and reward for all students in every year. All staff and students were given new Houses at the start of the year.

A real focus of the House system is the rewarding of House points and students achievements that go above and beyond. These House points go to the overall House cup competition awarded at the end of the year.

Students are rewarded half termly for their contributions to different aspects of school life such as House points awarded, attendance achievements, House competitions and subject awards.

Boys teams in Years 7, 8, 9 and 10 all represented their school with pride when participating at the ever growing rugby festivals hosted at some of the most prestigious rugby grounds in the area. In addition to this girls rugby is also developing in lesson time and a very able group of students have represented Crestwood at a girls rugby festival.

Our work with England RFU grows stronger as does the ability, skill and commitment of our students to what is a wonderful game that develops skills that are not just confined to ability on the field of play. In lessons all of our KS3 students are getting exposure to rugby with qualified RFU coaches alongside PE staff.

We now have over 25 students who through their experiences at Crestwood with rugby have gone on to join local teams and really see the benefits that rugby can bring to their lives. All of which will lead to rugby continuing to go from strength to strength at Crestwood.

The Hub continues to be busy before school, during break and at lunchtimes. The new Year 7 Team members have settled in and everyone works hard to ensure that students are able to use the computers, laptops and change their books. Special thanks to Oliver Smith, Year 7, for ensuring that the Hub statistics are up to date and to Jaymie-Leigh Wallace, Year 7 and Connor Wilson, Year 9, for levelling a large number of books and assisting with the Accelerated Reader programme.

Using the Accelerated Reader programme has given students the opportunity to make progress with their reading and comprehension skills. Two Year 7 students, Maison McFadden and Blake Hadley received book prizes and certificates, in recognition of their excellent progress.

Following the visit of author Steve Cole to Crestwood on 19th October 2017, we ran a competition to ‘Design an Advent Calendar around a Christmas theme,’ as suggested by Hub Team member Darmman Esmaili, Year 7. The Hub Team decided that the winner was… Brooke Hall, Year 8. Brooke received a certificate and a signed copy of Steve Cole’s book “Shoot to Kill,” during the end of term assembly. Well done Brooke!

It was fantastic to welcome Matt Windle, ‘The Poet with Punch,’ back to Crestwood School for World Book Day on 1st March 2018. Matt was brilliant, completing presentations to students in Years 7 and 8, in addition to two workshops. The Hub hosted a ‘meet and greet’ session during the lunch-break, which was extremely popular, with both Matt and the students having an enjoyable time. Matt signed numerous autographs and many students had their photographs taken with Matt too. Innumerable students were amazed with Matt’s poetry skills. Here is a comment from one of our Year 7 Hub Team members:

I think Matt Windle was awesome how Mrs Carpenter gave him a list of all the names in Year 7 and he just made up a poem using a name. Thanks for visiting us Matt. From Porscha Whittaker.

Winter has just ended,The ice has gone and melted,The leaves bear droplets of rain and condensation,Spring has begun to open its door.

The sun is shining,Rays are peeking,Out from between fluffy grey clouds,Rain is falling, rainbows forming,Beauty to be witnessed all around.

Birds are chirping,Chicks are cheeping,Lambs bounding along,Animals emerging from their hibernation,Spring has truly come.

Now bunnies are hopping, leaping, jumping,Springing through the field,Their long-ears and cotton-tails whipping in the wind.

Children’s laughter fills the air,Shouts of joy being yelled,As the gifts the Easter Bunny left the night before,Are chased, hunted, looked for,And found.

Our Sixth Form students decided to give other students the opportunity to have a ‘Blind Date with a Book.’ The Sixth Form Students wrapped books in plain paper and just wrote the genre and a few words on the front cover. Other students then had to guess what the book was about, before unwrapping it. The books were then ‘booked out’ to the students, in the normal way, for them to read and return as usual. Students were excited about unwrapping the books, without seeing the front cover or being able to read the blurb. Thanks to the Sixth Form students, for taking time to do this.

Yet again, we had a Hub Team member shortlisted for a Dudley Youth Award, in the Schools, Colleges and Further Education category. Daniel Moriarty, Year 10, one of our Senior Managers, was amongst the four young people shortlisted for the award. In addition to other things, he received recognition for his commitment to Crestwood School life, the Hub and the amount of his own time he gives up, for the benefit of our students. Well done Dan!

The Books4Home project, run by the Rotary Club, continues, so the Hub Team members will be visiting our Year 7 students during registration this term. The Year 7 students may select a book to take home and keep, thanks to the generosity of the Rotary Club.

Please, please return your late books!

Unfortunately, there are a large number of books, borrowed from the Hub and not returned. We have a ‘Book Amnesty’ running for the whole of this term, which means there will be NO FINES for any books returned, no matter how late they are! Please would everyone have a good look at home, in lockers etc. and return all Hub books to the Hub. If books keep going missing and the same books replaced, there are no funds available to buy newly published books. Thank you for your understanding and support.

The Hub team decided to run a competition to win a signed copy of one of Matt Windle’s CDs. Entrants had to write a poem about what Easter meant to them. There were some excellent poems. The winner, decided by the Hub Team, was… Madison Perry, Year 7 and here is her poem:

Baggeridge TripA group of Year 7 students were selected to participate in a day out to Baggeridge to complete the Challenge Academy high ropes course on Drop Down Day. The aim of the day was to develop confidence, boost social skills and encourage interaction between students. Everyone involved had an amazing day and some of them were extremely brave in completing both the beginner and advanced courses. Many students even dared to brave the fan drop which is a vertical drop that lowers each participant to the floor. Miss Barnbroook took one for the team of staff members and completed the death-defying jump herself!

Whilst we were out and about we visited the park at Himley, had a tasty lunch at the Café, then completed a sunny nature trail around the lake where we developed literacy skills by recording and describing the wildlife that we saw.

A fantastic time was had by all and a massive thank you goes out to the staff who took part!

Year 10 Work Experience WeekDuring 19th-23rd March, the whole of Year 10 went out of school on work experience. This opportunity gave students the chance to take on some interesting and challenging responsibilities. Work experience is a perfect way to sample the career options out there, and gently introduces students to the world of work.

You get to learn the do’s and don’ts, get work place savvy and learn to navigate your way through the jungle of office politics.

More able visit to Oxford University

Oriel is a welcoming academic community in the heart of Oxford, a place of study and learning for nearly 700 years. Home to world-class teaching, learning and research, they welcome students and staff from all over the world. On arriving, Students took part in a question and answer session to explain the differences between UK universities and the costs involved in university studies.

Tuesday 13th March

15 Year 10 students took part in an Invictus trip to Oriel College, Oxford. This was an exciting and exclusive opportunity to sample life in a top UK university, to talk about what it means to study at Oxford University and to tour the campus.

We took lunch in the Great hall. This was quite an imposing space, like something out of Harry Potter. Oriel students can eat here daily for around £4 a meal. This was quite an eye opener to Year 10 who were already planning out which meals they would eat there. Next we stopped off at the junior common room, where students can relax after a hard days studying. The boys liked the foosball and table tennis tables and were very eager to play. Students were also fortunate enough to take part in a lecture on the Classics and ancient Greek . Here they got the opportunity to be introduced to ancient Greek and took part in a quiz. This was great fun, especially as no one had studied ancient Greek before.

The afternoon activity was to take in another college. Half the group went to Christ Church College the other half went to Exeter College. Christ Church, one of the largest colleges of Oxford University, is strongly committed to teaching and research.

A large body of academics teach their students in tutorials, a system which enables undergraduates to work with experienced tutors in small groups. The building here were stunning and the Great Hall was the inspiration for the hall of the Harry Potter films. Exeter College is located adjoining the Bodleian Library. The College, the fourth oldest at the University, has occupied its current site on Turl Street since 1315, one year after it was founded. Today Exeter is home to a diverse community of fellows and students from across the world.

Having set out on the outing not knowing what to expect, the students came home buzzing about their future prospects.

The world is your oyster. It’s up to you to find the pearls.

CRESTWOOD’S BRUSH WITH THE LAWOn Saturday 10th March, 14 Crestwood students from Year 8 and Year 9 went on trial as part of the Magistrates’ Court Mock Trial Competition. This prestigious, national event has schools across the country battling it out in a real courtroom. In our case: Wolverhampton Crown Court.

The select group of students began their preparation in October studying the fictional case of Sam Fenton who stood accused of “being in possession of a bladed article in a public place without reasonable excuse”. Taking on the roles of lawyers, magistrates, witnesses and other court room officials the group spent many hours studying statements, writing speeches, learning lines and rehearsing their questions before the day itself.

The PROSECUTION team, headed by Dillon Nixon and Kaitlan Ward-Jones, gave Summerhill (a school with 10 years of experience in the competition) a tough time with some persuasive and convincing arguments.

Meanwhile, the DEFENCE team excelled against Wolverhampton Girls High’ School who, despite their eloquent and detailed answers, literally became dumbstruck by some clever and ferocious questioning from the Crestwood duo - Ameena Ahmed and Olivia George.

Although, Wolverhampton Girls’ High would go on to win the local heat overall, everyone in the Crestwood MCMT team deserves to be commended for their efforts. As first-timers to the competition, we certainly left our mark. Indeed, several teachers and magistrates in the courtroom complimented our team’s professionalism and competitive spirit.

Special shout out to Abi Meese and Charlie Hampson who also took on the roles of Court Reporter and Court Artist. These girls worked hard to submit an entry on the day as part of the local heat as well as investing extra time to then submit an entry nationally.

So, has the MCMT team been successful?

Guilty!

Golden TicketTo celebrate student’s success and excellent achievement we invited an upcoming singer in to sing to students who met our golden ticket criteria.

Over 200 students attended the special assembly where the singer sang and spoke to the students about aspirations and achievements.

It was an excellent occasion for the students and very inspiring.

We celebrated student’s achievements from last term with end of term assemblies for each year.

We celebrated student’s achievements in every subject, house competitions, house points and attendance.

We also awarded two students from each year with a Head of Year award and Head Teachers award for going above and beyond last term in all areas.

We also finished off our celebrations with a small in house assembly competition. Students from each house competed to pin the bunny ears and mouth onto the teacher selfies.

Well done to all students who won awards this term.
