Introduction• The collaboration in health literacy promotion activities

between the Central Medical Library (Centralna medicinska knjižnica – CMK ) of the University of Ljubljana and 3 central public libraries started in 2010 as a pilot project.

• The pilot project purpose is establishing “Health Corners” in the participating public libraries. – Customers’ health information needs and librarians ‘ training

needs in public librares were identified by a questionnaire. – The answers obtained revealed that user friendly access to

quality consumer health information is needed. – These needs can be met successfully by a collection of trustful

consumer health resources and occasional help from librarians or health professionals trained in information searching and information delivery.

Health Literacy Promotion• Health Literacy has been defined by WHO as the cognitive and

social skills which determine the motivation and ability of individuals to gain access to, understand and use information in ways which promote and maintain good health.

• The importance of health literacy is now widely recognised:– 7th Global Conference on Health Promotion stressed that health

literacy addresses some important factors that determine health.– IFLA in 2010 organised the section Health Information for All-New

challenges-New solutions.– Evidence show s that the right information given to the right person

at the right time can have a significant impact on their well-being and health outcomes too.

• Health literacy promotion and accessing health information through libraries has many important advantages for both, patients and public.

Health Corners: pilot project in Slovenia • In Slovenia a project “Public libraries for public health in

2007” started with a pilot study which evaluated health related questions asked by library users

• In 2010 the collaboration between 3 public libraries and the CMK started: the aim was the establishment of “Health Corners” at public libraries with health information support.

• In April 2011 there was a meeting of representatives of 3 public libraries (Ljubljana, Maribor and Novo mesto) and the CMK. The plan for the establishment of Health Corners and the training programme was approved.

Pilot Project Goals

• Provide training for librarians and health professionals in searching health information and efficiently solving users’ needs.

• Build collections of consumers’ health resources.• Start a new information service – Health

Corners.• Provide support and regular training by the

Central Medical Library.

Public library users’ information needs • Six librarians from three central public libraries answered the

questionnaire• Results revealed the following information needs:

– Customers’ questions are mostly related to specific diseases and complementary therapies.

– Customers prefer personal communication – Requests are ussualy resolved by using libray print material and internet

resources – CMK consumer health resources haven’t been used – PubMed or other foreign databases – except sometimes EBSCO Host

haven’t been used– Librarians are not familiar enough with medical terminology. – It ussually takes 15 minutes to answer consumers’ quistions– Most frequently asked topics: disease management, nutrition,

wellness, pregnancy, first aid, complementary medicine.– Librarians made some suggestions for their traning

Public librarians and health professionals training

• CMK organised a training course: 8 librarians and 2 pharmacists took part

• TRAINING PROGRAMME: – Introduction to medical information– Patients’ rights– CMK collection of printed resources for consumer health– CMK collection of Internet resources and databases

• Slovene and English resources• Health information• Drug information• Searching skills

– Patient organizations and self-help groups

Conclusions• Librarians in public libraries come across several health

related questions and they wish to improve their knowledge in that area.

• The training made librarians more aware of their role and possibilities in health literacy promotion at citizens.

• Establishment of “Health Corners” in public libraries offers a new and more systematic approach to providing better health information service to the users.
