Issue #108 - Monday 17 September 2012

We would like to welcome our Year 7 students who have made a fantastic start to the year. Many of our new students came along to our SolFest Learning Activities event during the last two weeks of the holidays where they took part in a range of activities designed to help them get a feel for Academy life and the kind of subjects they will be learning over the coming years.

Students who came into the academy to work with the new year 7 students were rewarded with tickets to watch the Paralympic athletics. Theo Gilbert, Christopher Comiski, Benjamin Oluwole, Shaheedul Hoque, Ahsan Habib, Tilak Subedi and Habinur Rahman shared their experience and sports skills as part of the academy’s Solfest Summer School project. A big thank you to them!

Stewart Brown, head of PE, said: “The boys were fantastic during the fortnight, supporting the new students and teaching them sports skills. I was delighted to attend the Olympic Park with the boys and give them the reward they deserve.”

A summer to remember......and a welcome to our Year 7 students

Can you spot our own Community Champion, Mr Ali, in this photo along with the Mayor Boris Johnson, Baroness Thompson-Grey and Chris Waddle. Mr Ali was invited to an awards ceremony at the Olympic Park to celebrate his success as a Community Champion.

Y7TEAMWORK

On Friday, Year 7 students spent the day working together to solve a series of problems. Each team had to get active, plan carefully and think of ways to find good solutions to the puzzles and scenarios they were given. Good work Y7!

BGA students were coming out of a borough athletics event when they bumped into two TV celebrities. Do you recognise them?

The Enterprise club faced their biggest challenge at the end of last term when they took part in an event at Allen & Overy inspired by the Dragons' Den TV show.

The students worked in teams to pitch new products for the Enterprise club to develop and faced an intimidating panel of Dragons:  Mr Tim Polglase, a senior partner at A&O, Mr Anirudha Majumder from Deutsche Bank and Mr Mark Keary himself.

The students were not given an easy ride and received a rigorous grilling from the panel who picked apart their figures and product viability. No prisoners were taken and the atmosphere was tense, but Azara and Sadek emerged from the battle zone with the investment they were looking for - £230 to develop their range of greeting cards.

The students who took part are: Mahmudul Hoque, Sadek Miah, Theodore Barbey, Azara Tahiru, Elvis Magba, Shahed Hussain.
