Hello Mrs. Vincent and Woodville Primary School! Thank you for accepting our request to join you for Term 4 this year. Please let us introduce ourselves to you and your teachers and students. We are the Woodlings and we have travelled from a far-off place in the Woodling Forest. We are very excited to spend time with you all at Woodville over the next eleven weeks. Our family consists of Mum, Dad, brother, sister and baby. We live in our house at the base of tall trees and like to move around. Our favorite things to do are learn and go on adventures to learn some more. From time to time during the term, we may have some visitors from the Woodling Forest join us on our adventures throughout Woodville Primary School. You will see us around Woodville on our travels during Term 4. We have a bright yellow bus that we move around in, so keep an eye out for that because it means that we will not be far away. We must ask that no one pick us up please! During term two at a different school, one student wanted to get a closer look at brother and picked him up but accidently broke poor brother’s leg! It was terribly painful for him and took quite some time to heal again. We will write about our learning and adventures each fortnight to keep you updated on our time here at Woodville. Look out for it in your newsletter! We hope that our stay at Woodville will inspire your students learning, to seek out the answers to questions, and their sense of adventure! Senior School – 5/6 Team News

Spelling Sensations!

It was an exciting night. For Akshi, it was her first time. For me, it was my fourth Wyndham Spelling Bee contest. I knew what was going to happen, but I was still very nervous. The year 5/6 student competitors were able to watch the year 3/4 student competition. Amazingly, the Year 3/4s were really good spellers! I know that when I was in Year 3, I wasn’t as confident as Akshi. She did really well and represented Woodville proudly. Then it was my turn, nobody got eliminated in the first round. The words were getting difficult, and slowly people started misspelling, including myself. It was still a very good night. Thank you to all teachers and parents that came to support us. -Ashmi Sarkar-

Youth Resource Centre Visit

On Monday 26th August, the Year 6 students visited The Youth Resource Centre in Hoppers Crossing. The Youth Services team provided information regarding programs, events and assistance available for young people aged 12 to 25 years of age and their families. Various services are located at four venues and various locations throughout Wyndham and can be found on their website https://www.wyndham.vic.gov.au/services/youth-

services/services-programs/youth-programs.

The Students were greeted with yummy snacks, had the opportunity to explore the ‘Chill Out’ room and had the chance to preview activities and ask questions.

Japanese Cultural Day for Prep to Grade on Wed 21st August

On Wednesday 21st August, we had our annual Japanese Cultural day for Prep to grade 2 students. Students explored the Japanese culture through hands on activities such as creating a Pikachu mask, Ninja Wheel, creating a Japanese good luck charm and making a Tap-tap sumo. We learnt about Kimono and designed our own Kimono. We enjoyed yummy Japanese Obento (lunch box). During the last hour we welcomed special guest performers – A.YA to Woodville - they are a musical duo who play traditional Japanese music with Shinobue (bamboo flute) and Taiko (Japanese drum).

1/2 Team News

Our Learning… . It has been back to work this fortnight for year one/two students following the excitement of literacy and numeracy week. In writing, we have been working on narratives using fun cards to give us ideas. We have been focusing on using Sizzling Starts to engage the reader. Delisha from 1B wrote: Mohit the King was making popcorn in the street for everyone. Then it popped all over the street. “Oh no! The popcorn has flooded everywhere!” screamed Mohit. He went into the street and cleaned the popcorn up. In Reading we have been looking at ‘Cause and Effect’ and ‘Compare and Contrast’. These themes help us read deeper into the stories we read and improve our comprehension skills. Ask your child about characters in their books and ask them how they are different and how are they the same. In Numeracy we have been studying number facts. We have been looking at the friends of ten (1+9, 2+8, etc.) doubles (4+4, 6+6, etc.) and near doubles (6+5, 3+4, etc.). These are very easy to practise at home and are essential for students to become fluent in. We have also been looking at the relationship between addition and subtraction and how one is the reverse of the other. Grade One students are looking forward to the Possum Magic excursion in week 10. Please ensure permission notes are returned as soon as possible to your child’s classroom teacher. Students are still encouraged to dress up in football clothes on this day, as it is also Footy Fun day!

Prep Team News

Throughout the past fortnight, our Prep students and teachers have been having some fun and engaging days at school.

During the Japanese Cultural Day, the students participated in different activities related to Japan, making Pikachu masks,

designing a kimono, playing Tap-tap sumo, making a ninja wheel and creating a good luck charm.

On Literacy & Numeracy Multi-age Day, the students got to dress up for the annual Literacy Week parade, as different

characters from a book. The students moved around in different classrooms and participated in a variety of literacy and

numeracy activities.
