Inside this Issue: WIGGLE WAGGLE WALK FOR WOODS

Our Mission:

To serve, protect and shelter homeless companion animals;

To place animals in humane environments;

To promote responsible pet ownership, provide humane education

and reduce pet overpopulations;

To celebrate the human/animal bond.

Wiggle Waggle 2011 was a remarkable celebration of the human/animal bond. It was also an absurd display of how ridiculous a pirate

costume will make our dogs look! “The Pirates of Laguna Lake” hosted more than 500 local and out-of-town K9s, who participated in our one-mile dog walk (led by a pack of WHS Volunteers and adoptable dogs) and our very competitive K9 competitions. There was also a pet fair, with more than 65 local animal-related (or loving) businesses and nonprofit partners exhibiting.

Once again, our good friend Stephanie Summers from Operation Sheep Dog Herding stole the show with her amazing border collies (dressed as pirates) and sheep (dressed as wenches). There were also demonstrations by SLODOG-Flyball, Ken & Bethany K9 Obedience, and Gentle Touch Pet Training- Fun Nosework.

Wiggle Waggle 19 was presented by Lemos Feed & Pet Supply, Central Coast Pet ER, Rabobank, and Cloudstar. Our annual event was proudly sponsored by Thousand Hills Pet Resort, Pismo Beach Veterinary Clinic, The Kennels of Springdale, Mission Community Bank, Conoco Phillips, the Frances Chang Seeds of Love Foundation, Meathead Movers, Inc., SLO Brewers Guild, iii DESIGN, Collaboration Business Consulting, SLO

County Garbage Co., NewTimes, Coudray Serigraphics, Q104.5, KZOZ93.3, Coast 101.3, KVEC 920, Charter Media, and Vallarta’s Mexican Cantina.

Special thanks to Arturo Santiago for emceeing our event, Jeremy Carnevali for providing our audio, Grizzly Youth Academy, and the City of San Luis Obispo for their consistent feedback and support.

Wiggling and Waggling with hundreds of K9s every year is a daunting task, and we would not have had such an outstanding event if not for the tireless work of our committee members: Executive Chair Steve Kragenbrink, Event Chair Laura Slania, Arlene Sackman, Meaghan Maurer, Vicki Ramos, Diane Brown, Sharyn Sugarman and Susan Lee.

We are already plotting to take over Laguna Lake Park for Wiggle Waggle’s 20th anniversary on Saturday, October 13th, 2012. We hope to see you there!

From the Director’s DeskPart of our mission at Woods Humane Society is to celebrate the bond between humans and animals. I want to share with you part of a letter I recently received that beautifully describes this very special relationship.

Michelle adopted Oreo eight years ago while a student at Cal Poly. Oreo wasn’t an easy dog to live with at first. He presented Michelle with a series of challenges that would have discouraged many others, but she didn’t give up on him.

“As I write this letter today, just over 8 years after I adopted him. I realize that as much as we gave to Oreo we could never give him more than he gave to us. We could always count on Oreo’s love… His smiling face greeted us day and night; he stood beside us during some of the greatest joys and some of the darkest days, constantly watching over us, always loving us.

Even now as we take our family walks…Oreo walks slowly, stopping often …I sometimes wonder if this is his final lesson to us: slow down, savor the moment, savor the time we have together. And so we do!!

Thank you Woods for never giving up on all of those animals in need. Thank you for never giving up on Oreo! What an amazing lesson this shy, shelter dog taught us all: Never give up!! Never ever, give up!”

Thank you Michelle, for all that you have given to Oreo, and for sharing with us this moving account of the “human and animal bond.”

Sincerely, Cory KarpinExecutive Director

WHS Volunteers and shelter dogs work together in order to bring wagging tails and wet noses out for weekly visits at local retirement and assisted living facilities throughout SLO County. Longtime WHS volunteer, Kathy Miller, leads a team of dedicated K9 handlers in support of this amazing program which benefits both facility residents and provides shelter dogs a reprieve from the stressful kennel environment.

We are proud to partner with the great folks of the Bayside Care Center, Bella Vista, Casa de Flores, The Manse on Marsh, Mission View, The Villages of SLO, Templeton EOC, and Ingleside Assisted Living in Atascadero. Most of these wonderful facilities also make monthly visitation trips out to say hello to their furry friends at the shelter.

The seniors at Bayside Care Center developed the Seniors Saving Seniors program, where residents bake homemade dog treats, sell them at the Avila Farmers Market, and donate the proceeds of their treats to sponsor the adoption fees for all of the “senior” (any animal 7+ years old) dogs and cats of WHS. Please visit www.baysidecarecenter.com and click on the Seniors Saving Seniors link to purchase dog treats and learn more.

INTRODUCING THE WOODS HUMANE ALLIANCE

CrITTer CAmP 2012We are happy to announce the return of Woods Humane Society’s annual Critter Camp Program. Every summer we open the doors of our shelter to 160 young people for week-long day camps focusing, in an enjoyable way, on animal-related issues such as direct animal handling, field trips to places like the Cal Poly Dairy and Charles Paddock Zoo, and fantastic demonstrations provided by our friends at Zoo to You, Marine Mammal Center, Pacific Wildlife Care, Debbie “The Bird Lady” Schmidt, Teah Anders and the West Coast Freestyle Group, Ken & Bethany K9 Obedience, and many more!

Critter Camp is geared specifically to youths aged 9-12, providing hands-on humane learning and experiences. The goal of Critter Camp is

to instill a passion for animals, build respect for local wildlife and ecology, and promote responsible pet ownership.

Critter Camp coordinates with San Luis Coastal USD’s summer schedule and will run for 10 consecutive weeks beginning in June. Application forms will be available online and at the shelter beginning April 1st. Registration opens on Monday, April 16th, and we strongly advise that you plan early, as space is limited and the sessions fill up quickly. (Applications are not accepted until April 16th.)

What better way to occupy the kids this summer than to send them off to spend time with the dogs and cats of Woods and all their furry critter friends?

WELCOME TO OUR NEW 2012 BOARD MEMBERS Simone Michel (with Leroy Garfunkel)After growing up in the U.S. and Switzerland, Simone returned to the Central Coast and made Paso Robles her home. She currently works as the Marketing Director for Vina Robles Winery. Being an animal lover all her life, Simone is blessed to have two wonderful Golden Retrievers. In her spare time she loves taking the dogs for runs in the vineyard where they can roam free.

Jimmy apRoberts (with Kayla)As a lifelong animal lover, Jimmy is excited to be a part of Woods. Jimmy owns a graphic design firm in San Luis Obispo and when he’s not busy creating logos and websites, he spends his time with his girlfriend, Casey, and Rottweiler, Kayla. Kayla loves to hike, run on the beach and meet new people.

Jon Ansolabehere (with Lily and Zeke)Jon joined Woods in October 2011 and is very excited to be part of such a great organization. Jon is an attorney with Carmel & Naccasha and lives in Atascadero with his wife Catherine. Jon and Catherine have family property in Creston where they like to let their two dogs, Lily and Zeke, roll in the dirt when not chasing a ball. Jon also has two cats at home including one from Woods.

Dan Lloyd (with Pancho and Cisco)A native Californian and local resident for 33 years, Dan has been instrumental in shaping the physical environment of SLO County. As a land use planner and project designer of numerous commercial and residential projects throughout the County, Dan has helped to create the character of much of what you see around you today. His best buddies, Pancho and Cisco, are often seen in Cayucos with Dan and his wife Mona, greeting everyone with their endless joy and enthusiasm.

Melanie Morgan Long, DVMDr. Melanie Morgan has been a veterinarian since 1988. Her career started at a 24-hr emergency, critical care practice in Fresno until she moved to the Central Coast in 1991. Since that time she has worked at several veterinary clinics in the South County and Santa Maria areas. In 2000 she opened her own veterinary practice, Primary Care Dog and Cat Hospital in Arroyo Grande. She resides in Arroyo Grande with her husband, Mark, five dogs and three cats. Dr. Morgan believes Woods Humane Society provides much needed care to the unwanted pets in our community. She appreciates the opportunity to be part of such a well-respected, compassionate organization and hopes that her perspective as a veterinarian will be beneficial.

Six thousand. That’s how many loads of laundry we do at Woods Humane Society every year. Keeping bedding, toys and other soft goods clean is more than a luxury for our guests, it’s critical to maintaining a healthy shelter. Since moving into our new facility in 2005 we’ve managed with three small residential washers and dryers but knew that a much-needed upgrade was on the horizon. Thanks to the incredible generosity of the Hind Foundation, that upgrade is in the works! On January 22 we broke ground on an all-new laundry facility equipped with state-of-the-art industrial washers and dryers ideal for our high-volume laundry needs. Please join us in thanking the Hind Foundation for their support and for their commitment to providing every homeless animal with the quality of care they deserve.

Hind Foundation makes LongtimeNeed a reality

Thanks to your support, 2011 was another successful year at Woods Humane Society. The following are just a few of the many accomplishments made possible by the generosity of people like you.

In 2011, Woods Humane Society:

• Found loving forever homes for 340 cats, 174 kittens, 512 dogs and 83 puppies – 1,109 animals in all

• Our medical team performed more than 3,500 spay and neuter surgeries and surpassed the 12,000 mark since moving into our new home in 2005

• Continued our partnership with San Luis Obispo County Animal Services by providing low-cost spay and neuter surgeries for all of the adopted dogs and cats at the County Shelter

• Continued the “Spay it Forward/Neuter the Next” feline program, performing 1,000 $10 spay and neuter surgeries for residents of Atascadero and Paso Robles

• Made weekly visits to local retirement homes with our Woods dogs through our Pet Visitation Program

• Surpassed even our own expectations with our most successful promotion to date, placing 126 cats and kittens into loving new homes in just one month

• Hosted 160 local children, ages 9-12, in our summer Critter Camp

• Was voted Best Local Nonprofit Organization for the third year in a row by the New Times Readers Poll

Thank you for making 2011 one of the best years in our 57 year history. With your continued support we’ll do even more in 2012!

4th Annual Wine 4 PawsOnce again it’s time for our pet loving wine drinkers to come out and support your four legged friends while enjoying the Central Coast Wine Region! The FOURTH Annual Wine 4 Paws will be held at 70 participating wineries throughout the Central Coast on April 14 and 15. During this weekend, Wine 4 Paws wineries will share their proceeds with Woods Humane Society, either by donating a portion of their sales or all their Tasting Fees. Wine 4 Paws is held concurrently at the participating wineries, and with 70 wineries sharing in the event, you’ve got plenty to choose from.

Last year’s event raised $25,000, with almost $50,000 raised since the event began in 2009. Director Sarah Tomasetti said, “Once again we have seen Wine 4 Paws grow. We’ve met people from out of town – even out of state - who have made Wine 4 Paws an annual wine tasting visit to the Central Coast.” The event includes a free passport available to print from the Wine 4 Paws website, or grab one at any participating winery during the event. When you visit a winery and help generate a donation, you’ll get your passport stamped, and with 4 stamps your passport will be entered to win one of many raffle prizes.

So mark your calendar for April 14 & 15, grab your map, and enjoy the weekend! To see a full list of participating wineries and a get a free printable passport & map, go to www.wine4paws.com. Then head out to the wineries of your choice and mention Wine 4 Paws when you taste and buy wine during the weekend of April 14 – 15, and you’ll help Woods continue to provide the love and care their animals so desperately need.

Thanks to the generous support of a sold-out crowd at our 2011 “Tails” dinner and auction, the dogs at Woods now have seven expanded and newly resurfaced play yards to romp in. The new yards provide a safe space for the dogs to play, exercise and socialize all year-round as they await adoption and their new forever homes. Plenty of outdoor time is one of the many luxuries we provide our guests to reduce stress and promote a healthy and happy stay. Thanks to everyone who attended “Tails” or contributed to this special project!
