The Current Situation

Here in Canada the use of forest products have been fundamental to thecreation and growth of our country since colonial times. Our forests have been used to provide building materials and heat for all Canadians and are exported around the globe.

How to make use of this potential energy?

The answer is a GREC-BioCHP wood gasification generation facility with the latesttechnology. Our generation facility transforms wood into a pure wood gas which is harnessed in two ways. First, the pure wood gas is used to drive an engine forthe generation of electricity.

Second, the heat generated from our process, and recovery from the generation of electricity, is captured and directed into a heat recovery system that can be used for industrial processes or residential district heating.

During this long history forestry practices have evolved into a modern sustainable system. Our product is used today to provide both electricity and heat from sustainable forestry reducing our dependence on and use of traditional fossil fuels.

Our product has the added benefit of being able to mix lower value portions of the total forest biomass (not currently be used in other forest products industries) into our feedstock. Thus ensuring the best use of our precious natural resources.

Development of wood gas technology

Wood gasification goes back to Georges Christian Peter Imbert, who created afixed bed reactor back in the 1920s. Wood gasification saw wider use formotorized vehicles during the 1940’s fuel shortages.

After over 10 years of hard work, Erwin Schiefer has succeeded to develop a fixed-bed gasifier under the brand name "XYLOGAS" for the European market. The prototype has generated output of 220kW electrical and is still going strong after 48,000 hours of operation.

Our Technology Partner XYLOGAS®The dream commercial wood gas in recent years has been pursued by many worldwide research institutions, businesses, developers and hobbyists. However, almost all of the complex requirements of the wood gas production and cleaning have failed.

The 10+ years of development, and over €1.5 million invested, has paid off with thecreation of the world’s finest Combined Heating and Power system. No one else on the planet has demonstrated theconsistent operational use of 8,000 hours per year.

the HGKW in Bad Wildungen

In July 2010, XYLOGAS® mission to clean up the wood gas power plant (HGKW)Bad Wildungen was accepted. There are 2 lines with a capacity of 220kWel each. The first line went into operation in June 2011 and has passed the test.

The process chain starts with the storage and drying of wood chips in our purposebuilt warehouse. Feedstock is then transported by conveyor into our drying system. After the drying cycle it is conveyed directly to the wood gasification unit.

Process Overview

Here the wood through our thermo-chemical reaction process passes throughthree phases (Pyrolysis, Oxidation, Reduction) and is converted into pure woodgas.

A wash system and a filter provide a final cleaning before the pure wood gasenters the prime mover engine. The prime mover engine drives the generator andproduces electricity. The thermal energy generated is available for use onsite or can be fed into district heating networks.
