FAREWELL AND OTHER THINGS By Dr. Lozeau

When I came on board in July 2013, I was advised that the

district needed to move forward on Curriculum Alignment,

Special Needs Programs, Policies, Handbooks, and District

Office Operations.

Since that time we have made great strides in training staff

to work with selected programs, revising the directives from

which we work, and having regular district meetings to discuss

and decide the next step in making the district more effective

and efficient.

But, I now take this opportunity to move forward myself. I

plan to enter retirement and spend more time with family and

possibly doing some specific tasks within education to help

others. It is a change I considered 2 years ago and feel that

now is the time to make the move.

I was fortunate to meet many members of the community

and to be involved with members of the American Legion (a

committed and patriotic bunch of individuals… members and

auxiliary!) and being a Charter Member of the Wonewoc Area

Lions Club (WE SERVE!).

On that note (WE SERVE!), I will make a mention of the

students at Wonewoc-Center. Next year students will be

required to earn community service hours for graduation. That

is great when done with a positive attitude. And with these

students I believe that is not an issue. So far this year we have

seen the seniors selfishly donate to the St. Jude Hospital even

at their potential loss of a BIG trip, students helping at

activities & events, and students who get praise from people

outside of the Wonewoc-Center communities for their selfless

acts. An example: We had students attend a Brewers Game. A

parent from another community at the game had praise for our

students for several reasons: one of which was their handing a

7 year old “birthday boy” a ball that had been tossed into the

stands & that our students “snagged”. That is what I hope to

remember from the Wonewoc students. Their legacy of being

caring, involved, and fun students.

WONEWOC-CENTER KINDERGARTEN

GRADUATION By Mrs. Jacobson

On Friday, June 5, nineteen students graduated from

kindergarten. We had an interesting morning with a power

outage to the school and wondered if we would even be able to

have our celebration. However, the lights came back on at 9:00

and we were only a little bit late in starting.

Our program included a welcome from Dr. Sharon Ennis,

some fun songs, and presentation of diplomas and medallions

by Ms. Noll and Mrs. Jacobson. The student's favorite part of

the program was singing the song "Let It Go" from Frozen with

the lyrics changed to "We Will Go" talking about going to first

grade. We were unable to watch our slide

show of the year because of the computers not

being ready to go after the power outage.

However, Ms. Louis made copies for the

students to take home. After the program, we

enjoyed some cookies and punch in the

kindergarten room.

Congratulations to the kindergarten class

of 2015 and high school class of 2027!

EXEMPLARY VOCAL SOLOIST

By Mrs. Goodenough

Wonewoc-Center Senior, Logan F, was named as an exemplary vocal soloist at the State Solo and Ensemble Music Festival held at the UW Platteville. Logan sang The Rovin’ Gambler by John Jacob Niles. Outstanding soloists are named from each of the performance areas of vocal, instrumental, string and piano. Logan will receive special recognition for this honor from the Wisconsin School Music Association. Logan also received a first rating on his musical theater solo and a perfect score with fellow senior, Carly S on their vocal duet.

W-C FORENSICS

By Mrs. Goodenough

The W-C Forensics Team had a busy competitive

season. The first competition was at the Sub-District

Meet at New Lisbon on February 16. Students

performed their speeches and plays in three rounds.

They had to receive a score of 16 out of 25 points in

at least two of the rounds to advance to the District

Meet at the UW La Crosse in March. Seven W-C

students participated in this meet. Kinsey T

performed the solo acting piece, Fairy Tales and Liars.

Landan P performed the solo acting piece, Remotely

Related. Masan P and Lane W performed the play

acting piece, Disconnected. Kaylee S, Audrey S and

Lesa H performed a group interpretive reading

entitled Children. All of our students received the

needed points and advanced to the district round.

At the District Forensics Meet participants must

receive a score of at least 20 out of 25 in two of the

three rounds to advance to the State meet held in

April. Landan, Masan, Lane, Kaylee, Audrey and Lesa

earned the required points to move on.

The State Forensics Meet was held April 17 and 18

at the UW-Madison campus. Receiving the Critic’s

Choice Award and a gold medal with 25 out 25 points

were Masan P and Lane W. Receiving the All State

Award and a silver medal earning 24 out of 25 points

were Landan P, Kaylee S, Audrey S and Lesa H.

Mrs. Goodenough would like to thank the team for

all of their hard work and cooperation during this

season.

WONEWOC-CENTER HIGH SCHOOL STUDENTS HELP AFTER-SCHOOL

PROGRAM TO HAVE A SUCCESSFUL FIRST YEAR!

By Mrs. Gibbons

Throughout this school year, 18 high school

students helped with the after school program,

B.A.S.E.- Before and After School Education, providing

much needed assistance as the number of students in

the program grew exponentially reaching a daily high

of 92 students.

The high school helpers grew in their skills and

abilities as well. As they gained more experience and

became more confident, they were given more

responsibility. It was awesome to see these students

grow in their abilities and maturity. From helping to

plan, organize and lead activities to helping the

students with their homework, these helpers were

instrumental in carrying out the program on a daily

basis.

A flexible work schedule enabled the high school

students to work when they were not involved in extra-

curricular activities and sports so they were able to

work and earn money when it fit into their schedule.

Next year, the program will continue to utilize high

school students with the addition of one or two School-

to-Work positions for 12th grade students. The STW

helpers will assist the program coordinator during

school hours prepping and organizing activities.

This program has been beneficial for all grade

levels, from students in the program to students

helping with the program. One high school helper was

quoted as saying, “After working with this program, I

have more respect for teachers and the work they do.”

A mutual respect was formed as the teachers and high

school students worked together to accomplish the shared mission of helping the students in the

program to learn, achieve and succeed.

EXCITEMENT AT W-C By Mrs. Jacobson

We have had lots of excitement

at Wonewoc-Center in May! Our

Moms/Dads and Donuts events

were enjoyed by all. Both events

started with a brief program of

songs with Mrs. Goodenough

and Mrs. Klemp followed by a

slide show by Ms. Louis. We

borrowed the theme from

University of Wisconsin’s

“Teach Me How to Bucky”

and made it into “Teach Me

How to Wolfy.” All of the

photos included had students

and some type of wolf in

them somehow. We also had

some great dance moves in

the video as well. At our

Moms event, students and moms/guests colored a ceramic

bobble head of themselves. Kindergarten, first and second

grades spent time playing games

outdoors with their guests at

Dads and Donuts. Grades 3-5

took a trip out to the OLA

(Outdoor Learning Area). Some

played games, went on hikes,

and fifth grade had the

opportunity to paddle around in

kayaks provided by Beyond Boundaries of Wonewoc.

Wonewoc-Center FFA &

Agriculture Department The Wonewoc-Center FFA has been

involved in community, chapter and state activities! On March 26, seven teams travelled to UW-Platteville to participate in Career Development Events in Dairy, Junior Dairy, Ag Mechanics, Agronomy, Wildlife, Livestock, and Dairy Products. Our students studied with experts at Mauston High School to prepare as well as attending various practices around the area prior to the competition. The Agronomy, Dairy and Livestock teams advanced to state! **Martina Graewin placed 8th individual at Platteville – Congratulations! **

Proficiency application results are in: Adam F received a Gold and will be attending State Convention in Madison in June to accept his award. Bailey M and

Chelsey K both received Silver awards and were chosen as Section three winners in their division. Kelsey R received a Bronze in the most competitive area in the state. Congratulations to all! In other news for FFA, we have postponed our annual Food

For America program to the fall of 2015 where Mr. & Mrs. Field have offered to host us – Thank you! We also did

our spring highway cleanup in April and held our annual awards banquet. We thank the community for supporting our recognition night with your donations. For a

recap of awards given please visit the school website and click on the FFA awards program.

Our chapter will also be well-represented at the State FFA Convention in June. Abby F will be competing once again in the Agri-Science Fair project, Adam F will be attending to receive his proficiency award, and Kelsey R will be attending to assemble the Wonewoc-Center star booth which we were nominated for this year! Kaylee S and Landan P have been chosen to participate in the State FFA Honors Band and FFA Honors Choir respectively at state convention while Ethan L and Tristan M will be serving as our chapter voting delegates on FFA and agricultural issues. Landan P will also be participating in the State Talent competition with a vocal solo – Good Luck to him! It is bound to be a busy three days and a great learning experience!

Summer is one of the busiest seasons for FFA We kick it off in June with State Convention followed by the Wisconsin Association of Agriculture Educators conference and the Elroy Fair. July is full with Supervised Agriculture Experience visits, Officer Retreat, and the Sauk County Fair. We end our summer with a bang with State Fair, the blood drive, Juneau County Fair and Farm Technology Days!

The Wonewoc-Center FFA Alumni has been busy already working concessions, awarding a scholarship, and serving walking tacos at the Wonewoc Old Fashioned Days celebration. Several alumni members have helped with CDE practices, driving students around to events

and fundraising! It’s been a great start. If you are interested in joining the alumni you could contact any of the officers: Mrs. Field, Mrs. Jones, Ms. Kopenhafer or Mr. Miller. Or feel free to attend the alumni potluck and meeting at Mrs. Jones home on Saturday, July 11 starting at Noon. (27022 Monitor Rd., Kendall, WI) There continues to be no dull moments in the agriculture classroom as well. The small animal class made their own board games centered around cats; cat breeds, nutrition, famous cats, life stages, anatomy, diseases and training. It was a great self-directed activity where students learned about problem solving and teamwork as well as the content.

The Wildlife class has been busy making fishing lures, creating weed identification booklets, and stocking trout streams. The Food Production students have been learning about food additives and dietary supplements, and of course creating recipes from these categories! The Middle School ag classes have been dabbling in just about any and every agriculture activity they can get their “hands-on.” Mrs. Miller’s landscape

class had a great opportunity this year for a learning experience. They were able to work with a new home that had no landscape designs in place. This allowed them to perform every aspect of landscaping from the homeowner interview and the on-site analysis, to the landscape design and drawing and finally the implementation of their plans. These students also performed some community service

projects early in the season with raking and leaf disposal as well as site assessments and suggestions. If there are any community members interested in having our landscaping class come out and

provide some services for you in the future school years, please feel free to contact Mrs. Miller to be added to our list.
