Presidents in Conservation Indoor Activity-Safari KitTeddy Roosevelt started his love of the outdoors when he was very young. As a boy, he struggled with illnesses and asthma. Because of this, he spent a lot of time indoors and was homeschooled. This cultivated his love for animals. He later went on to become President of the United States and known as the “Conservation President.” Roosevelt believed that being a responsible naturalist included cataloging the things that might fade away. Roosevelt, his son, and a team of scientists went on a safari where he and his son personally collected over 500 animals that were preserved and sent to the Smithsonian’s Natural History Museum.

For this activity we will be making a safari vest, and pair of “binoculars” to help us think like Roosevelt and his team!

OUTDOOR Activity-Look around You

Conservation is the responsible use or regulation of a resource without wasting that resource. For this outdoor activity look around the area that you live for resources such as land, animals, water, etc. which have been set aside for conservation. Figure out who or what organization is responsible for setting it aside and who or what organization is managing it for conservation today. Things to do; find some ways that the person or organization has acted to conserve the resource. In a notebook, or portable electronic device, look at these resources and answer these questions:

What is the resource?

Who owns or is responsible for taking care of the resource?

How is the resource being used?

How is the resource being conserved?

What can you Do?

Seeing what others are doing in your community to help conservation from the activity above, what can you do to help any of those individuals or organizations? How can you start your own conservation project at home? It does not have to be a big project you can make a difference with even little acts of conservation!
