International Night: Our PTSA and PALA groups collaborated to bring us a family International Night. The cafeteria

was decorated with flags, and tables with artifacts from different countries. Everyone enjoyed plenty of food and desserts from a variety of countries. Some of our families dressed in traditional clothes from their regions or countries. The evening concluded with a traditional dance from Bangladesh performed by Christina and Paula D’Costa, Julia Reid from South Korea, a song by Maria Bahmou and the breaking of a piñata donated by Cielo Rivera’s family. Thanks to all of the families who helped with the coordination, brought and shared artifacts and food, and attended the event. It was a very special evening for our families as we celebrated the different cultures here at White Oak Middle School.

Staff appreciation week: The entire White Oak Middle School staff was really grateful about the show of

appreciation by students and parents last week. They loved the thank you signs posted throughout the building, luncheon, and raffles. Thanks to all of the parents and students that contributed their time cooking and making posters as well as the ones that donated gifts for the raffles. Thank you on behalf of all of our staff!

Roald Dahl’s “Willy Wonka” was another successful production by our drama

club. Thanks Ms. West and Ms. P. Reynolds for their countless hours of dedication to ensure that the quality of the production as well as a great experience for our student participants. Parent support has been a key factor in the success of the production. Parents helped by selling concessions and tickets. A special thanks to Ms. Laura Wright for coordinating the fund raising activities as well as all around support from ordering t-shirts, getting donations,

making a CD, getting press for the program, and selling tickets. At the conclusion of the production parents organized a cast party full with a candy theme that was also yummy for our cast and crew members. The cast and crew enjoyed music, candy, and pizza as they celebrated their wonderful production. The cast met on May 11 to complete SSL hours for the evening and matinee performances and the elementary performances, as well as sign posters, and gave feedback for next year. Thanks again to all of the staff, students, and parents that contributed to the successful production of “Willy Wonka.”

Visitors’ procedures: All visitors please continue to check in the main office. All visitors will be escorted to locations

throughout the building. Please be prepared to provide identification upon arrival. We will begin using a new network-based electronic visitor management system in the next few weeks. Please see enclosed information for more details. It is our goal to continue providing a safe and welcoming school. Thanks in advance for your cooperation and support.

Tips for Staying Healthy – Sun Safety More than 400,000 cases of skin cancer are diagnosed each year in the United States alone, but many of these cases

could be prevented by the use of sunscreens.

Remember, when outdoors, the sun’s rays are the greatest from 11:00 am to 3:00 pm. Don’t forget to protect your skin with a sunscreen lotion #15 or higher.

When going swimming, use a waterproof sunscreen and reapply after exiting the water. Ultraviolet rays can penetrate water.

You can get sunburn on a cloudy day even if you feel cool, as the rays that cause sunburn come through the clouds.

Student Service Learning (SSL) Notes for June

- Give a Little Time . . . Make a Big Difference

STUDENTS DEVELOP A SENSE OF RESPONSIBILITY Summer is a great time to get involved in high quality service-learning. Search the website www.mcpsssl.org to find something that will

be meaningful for you.

During the summer months when school-based SSL coordinators are not in their buildings SSL questions and requests for preapproval may be referred to Pam Meador 301-279-3454.

Students may earn one (1) SSL hour for every hour of service during the summer months. (Maximum 8 hours in a 24-hour period).

All service for which SSL hours are granted must occur in a public place under the supervision of an adult representing a nonprofit, tax exempt organization.

Well-written reflections on MCPS Form 560-51 become part of a student’s permanent record. Taking time to write a good one is a good idea.

May and June 2010 Parent Academy Workshops: Parents can choose from workshops that include transitioning

to middle school or high school, using everyday routines to strengthen children’s reading skills, understanding ADHD, learning to use social media, and communicating effectively with school staff. Information and online registration is available on the Parent Academy website at www.mcpsparentacademy.org. Workshops are free of charge and led by MCPS staff members and representatives from community organizations. Interpreters and childcare are provided.

Reminders:

Check your child’s grades on Edline.

Daily Announcements are posted on Oaknet listserv and Edline.
